Chapter 36: Don't Go Anywhere Alone
Surprise, surprise I didn't go back to sleep last night. And now I have become very paranoid, I have this feeling that there is someone looking at me all the time. Me and less sleep don't mixed well, considering I have been up since 2 a.m. and still standing and breathing straight i'll probably good till 11 a.m. or 12 p.m..
Right now I was making breakfast before school, today Edward was taking me again so my dad slept in happily with my mom. I turned over my omelette and sprinkled some cut tomatoes and peppers on it, and when it was done I slid it on my plate with a spatula.
After I ate I went back up stairs to finish getting dressed but when turned to walk out of my closet I felt a light breeze on the back of my neck. I froze into place because it felt like someone was breathing on me and by now my heart was beating rapidly. I quickly turned around and of course there was nothing there, then I looked around at the usual view of my room but nothing was out of place. I grabbed hold of my book bag and walked out of my room with an unsettling feeling.
"Just breathe, calm down." I told myself as I went downstairs. When I reached the end I felt someone was behind me again so I turned around, and again there was no one there. There was no sounds in the house, nothing but silence and my breathing. I jumped with a gasp when I heard someone knock on the front door. So I walked to it with a hurried pace and opened it.
Relief washed over me when I saw Edward's face.
"Hello Jess." He said with his usual crooked smile and my former troubles were pushed aside. I went to him and hugged him, it felt so nice to be with him especially when I was feeling like this.
"Hi Edward, I missed you." I said and he kissed my head.
"I missed you too." He said and then he leaned back and looked down at me, his dark eye brows drew together.
"What's wrong?" He asked and I shook my head.
"Does something have to be wrong for me to be happy to see you?" I said and he lifted an eyebrow at me. He shouldn't have to know about these things, i'm sure John will handle it.
"No, but you looked worried about something when you opened the door." He said and then he took my hands in his and brought his face closer to mine. "You can tell me you know, i'll try to help in any way I can." I smiled even more at him and touched his face.
"Everything is fine, but we should get going." I said and then I tried to pull away from him but he held me to him and stared deeply into my eyes which almost made me crumble.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
"Yes." I said and then there was a pregnant pause before he released me.
As the trees passed us in blurs on the way to school I thought about what John told me last night, the whole situation was shrouded in mystery. When we came at a red light in town I leaned back into my seat and turned to the window. There was a crosswalk in my view, and there beneath the crosswalks sign I saw a strange women by the the lights just standing there staring, she had pale skin and long black hair. Was she looking at me? I felt my heart constrict when she smiled, the same smile that reminded me of the women from the gift shop. Was this her? Was she following me?
I stared back at her with intent. Then the sign switched from 'Don't walk' to 'Walk', and she stepped into the rode and walked with an even stride. All the way she looked at me until she completely passed Edward's Volvo.
"Jessica?" Edward said and I looked at with with what I hoped was calm expression.
"Yes." I answered.
"Are you sure that you're okay?" He asked and I nodded my head.
"Yes, I really am fine. I just think that I might be coming down with something." I said.
"Are you sure that you don't want to go back home?" He asked with concern.
"I'm sure, i'm sure it's not that bad." I said.
"Okay...'' He said. I could tell that he wasn't going to let it go that easily though. The light turned green and I looked down when my phone danged, of course I hide it in my bag as I read it.
"Don't go anywhere alone." - From John it read.
"I'll try. And also I saw her again."- Jessica.
"Again! Don't worry I won't let anything happen to you." - John. I hoped so.
When we got to school Edward turned off the car and then he looked at me.
"Promise me if you start feeling the least bit worse please text me and i'll take you home." He said and then he grabbed my hand.
"I promise." I said and then he kissed me on my lips. Whoa... I could never get tired of the feeling I get when he does that. When he pulled back I smiled at him and he at me, how could someone make me feel like this?
"There's something else..." He started.
"Hm? What is it?" I asked and then a moment later he shook head.
"Never mind i'll ask you later at lunch that is if you don't want to go home right now?" He said.
"No i'm good. I guess I will see you at lunch." I said and then he raised and eye brow at me and took my hand. I knew what he was hinting at. "Unless... I feel worse, i'll let you know." I said and then he kissed my hand.
"Thank you." He said and I ducked my head and blushed.
My classes before lunch passed away irritatingly slow, I guess it was all the anxiety from present situation. I should really start working on my poker face again considering Edward pays extra attention to my mannerisms.
I walked into the lunch room and looked around for Edward then someone touched the lower part of my back which made me jump.
"Ah!" I said before I quickly turned around and saw that it was Edward. He smirked at me with his eye brows pulled together and I gave him a relieved smile.
"Hey Edward." I said breathing a little easier than before. Damn I need stop being so jumpy.
"Hey Jess..." He said as he squinted his eyes at me. I ducked my head and looked around the cafeteria, there were quite a few people looking at us.
"Uh, Edward can we have lunch in your car?" I asked and he nodded his head.
"Sure." He said and then we exited side by side. It was raining lightly outside which made it even colder than this morning. Edward opened the passenger door for me and I slid in my seat and he closed the door. I sighed glad to be away from everyone and leaned back and then Edward got in on his side. I didn't say anything yet so Edward looked at me after he turned on the heat.
"You promised me if you felt worse you would go home early." He said and turned and looked at him.
"No I feel fine now I...I just want to be alone with you." I said with a smile, which was kinda true. But he still looked at me like he didn't buy it.
"Alright... Since you've obviously decided not to eat any of the cafeteria food today where do you want to go for lunch?" He asked.
"Uh... I'm not sure I don't feel like eating." I said before I leaned the seat back then Edward sighed. "Are you hungry?" I asked him innocently and he chuckled.
"Not a the moment." He said looking down at me. "Jessica, are you sure you don't want to go home?" He asked me again. I placed my hand on top of his and slid my fingers in between his fingers and then smiled.
"Nope but I do want to spend alone time with my boyfriend." I said and he smirked.
"Oh so you're calling me your boyfriend now?" He asked and I nodded at him.
"Yes, unless you don't like it?" I asked. Edward looked down at our hands and turned his around to better hold mine and then he looked back to me.
"It'll do for now." He said with a smile. I wondered what he meant by that. He stroked my hand as we sat in his car and it was a good while before he spoke again.
"What are you thinking about?" He asked. I opened my eyes and looked at him from where I laid and I actually for the first time since last night felt at ease.
"You." I answered.
"What about me?" He asked leaning over me. The lack of sunlight in forks made shadows that helped define his face more and I took the time to trace every feature with my eyes starting from his eyes to his mouth. I studied the curve of his lips before I gently touched the bottom of them with my middle and pointer finger.
"Kissing you." I said and he leaned down and did just that. He pressed his lips against mine gently at first but after a while it became more passionate. I was getting so lost in this moment I slid my hand beneath his arm and on to his back to pull him closer, and then just for a second I opened my eyes and passed Edward's head I saw her right in front of the car. My eyes went wide and I pulled away from Edward instantly with a gasp, not even a moment later was he all the way in his seat.
"Did I hurt you!?" He asked, he looked angry. I looked away from him to back where I saw her at and then I shook my head.
"No, no...no I just...I'm just freaking out." I said. Don't hyperventilate, don't hyperventilate.
"Why? Jessica what's wrong? Please tell me." He said.
"I'm just tired...maybe i'll go home early after all." I said squeezing my eyes shut, it was after 11 a.m. and fatigue actually was beginning to set in.
"Alright let's go to the office." He said and we got out of his car and did just that. After Edward got me out of school he didn't ask anymore questions he took me straight home. Most of the way I had my eyes closed because I was afraid to see that women again. When Edward turned off his car I opened my eyes and looked at my yard, my parent's car was gone, I just remembered that my sister had to go to a doctor's appointment in Port Angeles...
"I forgot that there wasn't going to be anyone home..." I said and then I looked at Edward. His jaw was tight and his eyes were black, he didn't move he just stared straight a head.
"Jessica, I don't want to leave you alone. I know that something is wrong other than sleep deprivation, last time you were worse than this and you didn't freak out like this. I can't protect you if you don't tell me what's going on." He said and then he looked at me with frustration.
I realized how inconsiderate I was being towards him, not only was I making him worry about me with how ridiculous I was acting but there was also the fact that I wasn't telling him anything, not to mention we made out in a small closed off area. I was unintentionally pushing him which is something I never wanted to do again, but I can't let him know what's happening not only will it put him and his family on alert it was going to bring up some questions I was not prepared to answer.
"I'm sorry, I really am. I'm just not feeling well, and it just has me feeling anxious. Maybe having more energy than last time leaves more room for me to freak out, I know that I will be better after I get more sleep. I haven't been getting much lately and i'm surprised i'm as coherent as I am right now." I said and he seemed to buy it... I think.
"Do you want me to come up?" He asked. I looked into his dark eyes and as much as I wanted him to I couldn't let him, it'll be too painful for him.
"No i'm just going to sleep i'll bore you." I said with a smile.
"Alright." He said, how tense he was slightly seeped into his smooth speech.
"But maybe you can come back later?" I asked getting out and he looked at me with a smirk.
"Can't get enough of me?" He asked and I blushed profusely.
"No I guess I can't." I said biting my lip and he chuckled.
"I'll be back after the sun goes down, get some rest." He said.
"Okay, see you later." I said.
"See you Jess."
After our goodbye I walked to my front door and opened it then I walked inside and closed the door behind me before I leaned against it. I know I wasn't supposed to be alone but my anxiety got the best of me. I pulled out my phone to see if I had any text messages from John. No not even one. I squeezed my tired eyes together as I walked towards the living room and then I took off my coat to use as a blanket for when lay down on my couch. Of course I wasn't going to wait for everyone to get home in my room John said that most of the riffs were in there. After I closed my eyes I was fast asleep.
~ 2:30 p.m. ~
I awoke to the sound of a door bell ringing throughout the house and got up off the couch as soon as my groggy body would let me. Then I wiped the sleep from my eyes as well I could before I opened the door. To my surprise it wasn't anybody I knew but a little crying girl with brunette big tails and short overalls, I immediately became concerned.
"Are you okay!? What's the matter?" I asked her.
"I lost my dog in the woods, please miss help me find him!" She cried.
"Uh, what's your name?" I asked kneeling down to her and she sniffed.
"Amanda." She said with tears still rolling down her face.
"Well Amanda I think we should go get your parents, and they can help look for your dog." I said reasonably but she her head and cried louder.
"No! It will take too long, my dog just ran in the woods right behind your house! I know if we run now we can catch him, if we don't i'll never see him again!" She cried.
"Now you don't know that." I said but she just shook her head again.
"Our other dog Buster got out and was eaten by coyotes!" She said crying. Oh god. I looked around hoping to see some adults who might be her parents but no one was outside their homes, it was as if the whole neighbor hood went into hiding.
"I really think that we should go and get your parents." I said and she backed away from me with her hands on her eyes.
"You don't care about my doggy! That's fine i'll go look for him myself!" She said and then she took off and ran around to the back of my house.
"Hey wait!" I said and I took off after her. She was running so fast she already ran past where the back lawn stopped and the trees for the woods started, you would think catching a little kid would be easy but than again they have energy to spare. I ran around the trees trying my best to keep up with her but my body was still tired, I needed more rest.
"Amanda stop!" I yelled after her.
"Don't tell me what to do!" She yelled. Not long after she said that she disappeared behind a group of very large trees.
"Amanda please come back!" I yelled.
I stopped running after I passed the group of trees she disappeared behind. I looked all around me to see if there was any sight of her but no there wasn't anything but trees and other green plants. I walked back around the trees and felt unsettled as I heard nothing but the crunch of the uneven dirt beneath my shoes. And then it became deathly quiet until it started to rain again and only the patter of it against the still life of the woods was the only thing that could be heard. How did this even happen to me? I ran out with no jacket, no cell phone, and no one knew where I or that little girl was.
"Amanda! Amanda! I don't want to get eaten by coyotes..." I said remembering what Amanda said about her dog Buster.
I held my arms as I began to shiver uncontrollably from the cold and the rain. My hair as well as my clothes were completely soaked through. I kept walking trying to see if I could see anything different, anything that could give me a clue as to where I was and where I should head. What direction did I even come from?
"Jessica!" I heard someone call from behind me so I turned around. It was Amanda and it looked like she found her dog.
"Amanda are you alright?" I asked jogging over to her, she and her dog were dripping wet.
"Yeah I found Rex!" She said happily and the black Labrador wagged his tail.
"That's good, you wouldn't by any chance know the way home would you?" I asked as I looked around us.
"Yes." She said.
"Of course you wouldn't- wait really?" I asked and she smiled and nodded. " Well lead the way." I said.
"I could but I won't." She said and I gave her a confused look.
"Why not i'm sure that both our parents are gonna be worried sick about us." I said to her, was she running away from home or something?
"Yeah... but I went through all this trouble getting you out here alone." She said with a sinister smile and my eyes widened in surprise.
"What..?"
"You heard what I said Jessica." She said, and then it hit me that I never even told her my name in the first place.
"Amanda how do you know my name?" I asked tentatively.
"My name is not Amanda it's, it's Lorelei." She said and then she stated to glow in a familiar light that engulfed her entire body and she grew almost three more feet taller. Out of the light appeared a face that I have been seeing to often for my liking, the women with the long black hair, whose name was apparently Lorelei.
"I told you young girls should be careful remember?" She said with a glower, all traces of the little girl were gone. The women glared at me with her light blue eyes but the dog next to her eyes were far more frightening. The dog's eyes glowed white and silver as he ducked his head in defense and growled menacingly, and before my eyes he was growing larger and larger and looked wilder.
At this point my heart was beating rapidly in my chest with fear gripping me, it was not only the rain and temperature that made me shake anymore it was a mixture of that and sheer terror. I started to back away as much as I could without turning around and running because my eyes were focused on the women who has been stalking me and a large dog with very large teeth.
"I mean following a stranger into the woods to help them find their missing dog, how gullible can you be? He definitely couldn't have liked you for your brains." She laughed, who was 'he'? "Anyway Rex would like to say thank you for helping little Amanda find him, right Rex?"She sneered and the dog gave a frightening bark. "Well go get her!" She said after she gave him a pat on his side. Rex went low and then he lunged himself right at me. Gashing teeth and claws were coming to rip through me and I let loose a ear piercing scream.
Someone, anyone, help me.
