A splitting headache woke Cass from a deep slumber, and she stared at the ceiling for a couple minutes. Not remembering where she was, she slowly got up to look around. Her head pounded as she tried to take in what was around her. She was on a gurney in a lab.
"Oh, you're awake! Excellent," Daniel said excitedly. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I got hit by a truck."
"Not surprising… you have been asleep for over three days," Daniel said breezily as he looked at one of the specimens in a jar. "But I'm not a doctor, so… perhaps it is strange."
"What… three days?! We need to get going! Wait… where are we?"
"Umbrella's underground lab… remember what you said earlier about 'secret switch nonsense'?"
"Yeah."
"Your assumptions were correct. I found a secret elevator in one of the offices upstairs, which brought me here."
"So, what was all that gunfire I heard?" Cass murmured thoughtfully.
"Perhaps they found some of our stumbling friends?"
"Maybe. Did you find anything interesting while I was out?"
Daniel looked at her thoughtfully and replied, "Well… I was able to get into contact with some friends. They have sent a helicopter for us, and it should be here in a few hours."
Cass winced as she got off of the gurney, and Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"We can stay here. Umbrella designed this area to be safe. You should really rest."
"I made a promise to someone," Cass said resolutely as she stretched. "Plus, I think I heard movement on the floor above me in the administrative building."
"Probably not a good thing."
"Probably not, but I want to make sure it's not someone who needs help."
Daniel shook his head and said, "Fine… But we need to be quick. I don't want to run into the creature that attacked those men."
Cass thought back to that giant hand crushing a human head like it was a soda can. With a small shiver, she nodded her head in agreement. As they walked up the staircase, Daniel seemed to be more cautious than before. His carefree attitude faded away as they walked out of the building.
There were less infected people walking around now, but Cass wasn't sure if that made her more or less nervous. Where had they gone? Maybe they were attacked by the giant too. Cass took a deep breath before she one again used the dumpster to climb inside the window. The body of a woman laid on the floor. Carefully stepping over it, she moved to the room from before. The man was dead. She knew that from the slumped body on the floor.
Sounds from the floor above her caught her attention. Daniel placed a hand on her shoulder and motioned that he was going to check the upper floor. Cass nodded and walked to the man's desk. The fire extinguisher and flashlight were still there. The address book still sat in the drawer. She took it before she quietly opened the other drawers. A gun case was hidden under a pile of paperwork. Putting in the combination, she sighed with relief when it opened. She was still on edge, but she felt much better with a gun in her hand.
A gunshot rang out from above her. With a tinge of guilt, she shut and locked the door behind her. She quickly shoved the desk against the door before looking out the window. It was only the second floor, but she needed to be careful. Knocking made her turn around to the door.
"Hey!" Daniel said in a low voice. "Are you okay?"
With a quick lift, she got out the window. Hanging by the window's outer edge, she felt around with her feet for some kind of ledge. She found the window underneath her and dropped down onto its ledge. Dropping down again onto the ground, she looked around before racing into a nearby building. As the doors closed behind her, she heard a familiar shriek from one of the rooms.
One of the creatures from the dorm crawled out of the room. The ones from the dorm had seemed to be in various stages of mutation, and this one was much faster. A moan from a nearby room caught her attention, and she looked on in horror as the creature used its tongue to spear the infected person and drag him into a room. With careful footsteps, Cass slowly walked past the room where the creature was now feasting on a corpse.
After walking to the other side of the building, she quickly opened the door and shut it behind her before running into a different building. She could deal with the infected people roaming around but not whatever the hell that was. Listening for the any hissing sounds, she wandered from room to room. This seemed to be a computer lab. Several of the computers had a note taped to them with visitor passwords.
The door closed with a small creak. After locking the door, she checked around the room to make sure it was clear as well as it having an exit. There was another door that led to a stairwell. She locked that one too before logging into the computer. She was tired of surprises. After checking the news for more updates, she checked her email. Gats had responded numerous times. Each reply had gotten more and more frantic. Ben didn't know a French man named Daniel and sure as hell hadn't told anyone about Umbrella's lab on campus.
Cass had suspected as much. Daniel had just seemed too unperturbed, too prepared. No doubt he was working with Umbrella in some capacity, but Cass wondered why he hadn't just captured her yet. Maybe he was just waiting for backup… and they'd be there in a few hours. After updating Gats on where she was and where she'd been, she let her know that she'd be near the center of campus. If Gats managed to get her help, that would be the easiest spot for her to see help coming.
Loud footsteps echoed through the building. Cass stayed still and hoped they would pass by her. The door handle jiggled from outside, and Cass slowly walked backwards away from the door.
"Ah, Cass. Ma minette… where are you going? We were having such a good time. Don't worry. I have a friend who can help with this door."
The footsteps grew closer to the door as Cass slipped out of the other door, careful to shut it quietly behind her. Taking two steps at a time, she flew down the stairs and out a side door as she heard the door to her room smash open. An infected woman lunged at her as she stepped outside, but Cass managed to dodge her just in time. Running to another nearby building, she almost collided with someone.
"Cass?!" Kevin whispered before pulling her in for a hug. "I thought you were out of town."
"I got here just in time for the apocalypse… by the way, we need to run the opposite way right now!"
"Uh… actually we were fleeing that way," one of David's friends said, pointing at the door Cass just came through. "You don't want to go the other way."
The door behind Cass slammed open as the giant man in a trench coat walked through the door, and the door behind Kevin's group busted open to reveal a different giant man, who appeared to have a heart grafted onto his chest. Kevin grabbed Cass' hand, and they ran into the nearest room, slamming the door shut behind them.
Daniel's voice came from behind the door. Cass could only assume he was cursing in French as he did not sound happy. Kevin started to go back to the door, but Cass quickly explained, "He's with Umbrella. We need to get out of here."
Kevin nodded as his friends opened the window and climbed out. After getting outside, they heard the sounds of fighting from inside the building. As Cass turned the corner of the building, she saw a dead Umbrella member with an automatic rifle laying at his side. She picked it up and told the others, "I've emailed a friend that I'll be at the center of the campus. I don't know for sure if she got it or not, but it's our best bet at getting out of here alive… Kevin, take this. There's something I want to look for before I meet you there."
"What? No! I'm not just going to leave you."
"I'm going back to the lab. I heard tales of some kind of cure… I need to see if they're true."
"A cure?" Kevin's face brightened, and he pulled out a vial. "We already checked out the lab. This is the cure one of their scientists created. We've taken it already, but we've got one left."
Cass looked at the vial and said, "Then I should wait… It'll be easier to recreate if they have the actual cure."
Kevin looked like he wanted to argue, but the sounds of the monsters fighting inside the building made his friends start to run toward the center of the campus. With a sigh of frustration, Kevin grasped her hand and followed.
