Chapter Fourteen: Beyond Our Control

Kim had managed to push herself into a kneeling position when she saw the hornet monster aim a shimmering white gauntlet at Billy. Trini's Billy. No! Staggering to her feet, Kim started running towards the blue ranger. She had to protect him at all costs! It was her fault that Trini was dead, but she could protect the man Trini loved. Electronix fired the beam, and Kimberly reached Billy in time to push him out of the way.

"Kimberly! No!" Billy shouted. The blast of ice chilled her to the bone. She felt the ice encase her limbs, rapidly draining the life away. The cold covered her mouth and nose, preventing her from drawing in fresh air. This was it then. She'd die without getting her revenge on Tommy and Kat and that was okay. As long as Billy was safe that's all that mattered.

Her lungs started to burn as the need for oxygen became dire, yet she was calm. This is what she deserved for Trini's death. A golden light appeared before her eyes, and she knew this was it. If only her limbs were free then she could reach out to it. The light grew brighter and warmth filled Kimberly's body. There was a cracking sound and the ice surrounding her shattered. Kim stood unharmed as the light began to fade. Standing before her was the Mighty Morphin yellow ranger. Floating above her was the sabertooth tiger. Tears slipped down Kimberly's cheeks as she whispered, "Trini?" Without responding the yellow ranger dashed forward and a few slashes from her power daggers, Electronix went down in a hail of sparks and fire. She didn't stop there, sprinting through the mass of tyranndrones, cutting through them with no trouble. Elsa and Zeltrax quit battling the rangers, aware that this ranger was not to be messed with.

"You may have won this time Rangers, but this isn't the end!" Zeltrax threatened. He and Elsa dove through an invisportal, vanishing into their own dimension.

The yellow ranger walked back towards Kimberly.

"Trini?" Kim said again. Though her face was obscured by her helmet, the voice that escaped was unmistakable, "You've carried the guilt for my death for too long Kimberly." Heart breaking, Kim sobbed, "I'm so sorry Trini! It's my fault! You wouldn't have died if I hadn't begged you to come over!"

"That's not true Kimberly. It was my time to leave and nothing would've changed that." Trini said gently. As if facing a dangerous animal, the yellow ranger slowly removed her helmet. Long raven black hair tumbled free as Trini's face came into view. Unchanged by time, Kim reached out a hand hesitantly but stopped. Trini didn't hesitate to wrap her arms around Kim, pulling the older woman into a tight hug. She was corporeal and warm. Wrapping her arms around the yellow ranger, Kim sobbed into her shoulder.

"I've missed you Trini! I love you! You were always there for me!" Kim cried.

"I've missed you and I love you too, Kim. I only wish I'd been able to help you mend these bridges sooner. You've been alone too long. It's time to let go of your guilt, my friend." Trini said.

The other rangers had begun to gather around the pink and yellow rangers. Tommy, Billy, Jason, and Zack removed their own helmets so they could see Trini too. All four had tears in their eyes, stunned that she'd returned to them. When the best friends finally broke their hug Kim said tearfully, "You took the darkness away. Thank you Trini. I'll never forget you." Trini gave Kim that familiar soft smile as she nodded then turned to face her other friends.

"Zack," She said. Zack flung his arms around Trini, pulling her into a bear hug.

"It's been too long." He sniffled.

"I know. I never stopped watching over you though. I'm proud of the man you've become." Trini said.

"I love you Trini." Zack said emotionally.

"I love you too Zack." Trini said. Parting from the original black ranger, she moved on to Jason. They embraced easily as Jason whimpered against Trini.

"I'm sorry Trini. I failed you. When you asked me to bring Kim with me back to Angel Grove I did it to humor you, but I never tried to reconnect with her." Jason cried.

"You never failed me Jason. None of you have. Perhaps things should've been different, but there's nothing we can do to change it. What counts is that those bridges have been mended again." Trini soothed.

"I love you Trini." Jason said.

"I love you too Jason." Trini said. She moved on to Tommy next who engulfed her in a hug, clinging to her like a lifeline.

"It's good to see you again Trini! I love you, and I'm sorry we didn't get to spend more time together!" Tommy exclaimed.

"I love you too Tommy, and I know. I'd have liked more time on earth, but that's not how it worked out. Thank you for watching out for Kim." Trini said.

"I shouldn't have let her go." Tommy said grimly.

"I don't blame you and neither does Kimberly. That should be enough. Live your lives. Remember the past but don't dwell on it." Trini said wisely.

"You can count on it." Tommy promised. He gave her another quick squeeze before releasing her into Billy's waiting arms.

Whether it was age or the knowledge that she would soon leave again Billy did something very uncharacteristic. He pressed his lips to Trini's in a gentle kiss. Surprised at first, but pleased Trini smiled against his mouth. Her arms found their way around his neck, holding him to her. His tears mingled with her own. They broke their kiss to touch foreheads.

"I love you Trini! I love you so much!" Billy sobbed.

"I love you too! Oh Billy, I've missed you so much. I wanted to spend my life with you, but I'm happy to see that you've moved on." Trini confessed.

"I've never forgotten you Trini. I wanted to grow old with you. You know I'll never stop loving you." Billy said.

"I know my love. We'll see each other again. I'll always be with you." Trini promised. The couple kissed again before separating. Trini began to back away from Billy so she could see all five of her teammates. Kimberly had gone over to Tommy, wrapping an arm around his waist and he had an arm slung around her waist as well. She smiled to see that their love knew no bounds. The yellow ranger looked at each one of her friends, proud to have been part of such a wonderful team. As she began to fade Trini said, "I love you all. I'll always be watching and may the power always protect you."
