Jennifer Baratta - The final few chapters should have less of a wait.
"You look like crap." Alex said when she saw Adam.
"Thanks." He said before coughing. "I'm going to get some sleep. Then I can shake this off before tomorrow."
"I don't think that will happen." Alex said. "If you have what has gone round the DEO, it'll take you several days."
"But he's driving me to Midvale tomorrow." Elle said.
"I don't think he is." Alex said.
"You could fly me." Elle pointed out to Kara.
"I could." Kara said.
"But not that practical with luggage." Adam pointed out, coughing one more.
"Why don't I drive her up?" Alex offered.
"You are volunteering to spend time with Eliza without your shield?" Adam asked. "Or is Elle your new shield?"
"I'm just offering to help. If you don't want my help that's fine."
"Are you sure you're okay with it?" Kara asked. "I mean don't you have plans with Maggie?"
"No plans." Alex said. "I'm happy to take her."
"Thank you." Elle said hugging her. "Will we take your bike?"
"No." Adam immediately said.
"Sorry kiddo. J'onn's car it is. But at least that way you can take as many toys as you want." Alex said. "But why don't I stay here tonight and then we can leave really early tomorrow."
"Is Maggie okay with that?" Adam coughed.
"It's fine." Alex said.
"You're the best." Elle smiled.
"I'll go grab my stuff, I'll see you later." Alex said before looking at Adam and saying. "Get some rest."

"You sure you are okay with this?" Kara asked the next morning as she and Alex loaded J'onn's car.
"It's fine." Alex assured her.
"I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Have to go to the DEO to collect Wil rather than have him brought to you?" Alex suggested.
"That's not funny." Kara said as Elle emerged and said.
"Ready."
"No you're not." Kara said.
"Yes I am." Elle argued.
"No you're not. You've not given me my goodbye hug." Kara argued causing Elle to wrap her arms round her.
"Promise me you'll be good." Kara said.
"I promise." Elle said as Adam came out of the house looking like death.
"I'm going to miss you so much." Kara went on.
"I'll miss you too." Elle said before moving to Adam and hugging him goodbye.
"Me too." Adam said before Elle ran to the car.
"When did we agree to Krypto going?" Kara asked Adam as the dog jumped in the car with Elle.
"He's his own dog." Adam pointed out before coughing.

"Grandma." Elle called as she ran from the car and hugged Eliza.
"Sweetie." Eliza said hugging her as Alex slowly walked towards them, Krypto at her side. When Elle let go of Eliza, Eliza wrapped her arms round Alex.
"How are you?"
"I'm fine." Alex said before releasing her mother and looking at Elle. "Don't you have a car to unload?"
"You going already?" Eliza asked.
"Can't you stay for a while?" Elle questioned.
"Actually, I'm pretty tired, do you mind if I stay tonight?" Alex asked.
"Of course not." Eliza replied. "Why don't I go make some coffee and let you two get settled?" When Krypto barked she added. "Sorry, you three."

"Is Elle asleep?" Alex asked later that evening as Eliza walked out onto the porch.
"It took awhile, but yes."
"Well she was really excited about coming to visit." Alex smiled.
"Nice to hear." Eliza said before asking. "So why are you really here?"
"To drop Elle off."
"The only time you ever come back here without Kara is when something is wrong." Eliza pointed out.
"They needed a driver." Alex shrugged.
"And the truth." Eliza pressed.
"How do you always do that?" Alex asked.
"Do what?"
"Know that I am hiding something."
"I'm your mother." Eliza said. "So what's wrong?"
"I think it is over." Alex said sadly.
"What is?"
"Maggie and I."
"You've had a fight?"
"Not exactly. Just a realisation. Maggie came back because she thought she wanted a family, but she doesn't."
"But you do." Eliza said.
"I think we both thought we could change, but we can't."
"You can't help wanting different things." Eliza said.
"I know. But it still hurts."
"I know." Eliza said drawing her into her arms.
"What if I let I go, but still don't have a family? Then I'll have lost everything for nothing."
"Alex, you and Maggie ended last time because you wanted kids. That hasn't changed and it never will. The only reason you got back together is because you both thought Maggie changed what she wanted. But the truth is neither of you can change what you really want."
"Wanting something doesn't mean it will happen."
"True, but we will all help you anyway we can." Eliza said.
"I know." Alex said.
"Do you? I mean you haven't even told Kara about this have you?"
"No. She has enough on. And ultimately I had to figure out what I wanted."
"Which is why you are here?"
"I thought a change of scenery might help me know for sure. But maybe I was just running away from an empty apartment."
"Empty apartment? Where's Maggie?"
"She left a couple of weeks ago, she said we both needed space to think."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"I needed time." Alex said as a breeze hit them before a gently thud sounded.
"Kara? What are you doing here?" Eliza asked as Kara landed on the porch.
"Elle called. She said Alex needed me." Kara said looking at her heartbroken sister. "What's happened?"
"I'm okay. You didn't need to come." Alex said feeling guilty that Kara had come to Midvale.
"Yes I did." Kara said suddenly looking over to the door.
"What's wrong?" Eliza asked.
"It's Elle." Kara explained before calling. "You can come out."
As Elle reached the group Kara lifted her into her arms and hugged her.
"Am I in trouble?" Elle asked.
"For calling me? No. Never. For staying up past your bedtime? Yes. You are in so much trouble."
"Why don't I make some hot chocolate?" Eliza asked standing.
"With marshmallows?" Elle asked hopefully.
"Sure." Eliza smiled. "But only if you help me." She said knowing Kara wanted to talk to Alex alone.
"Okay." Elle said wriggling out of Kara's arms and following her grandmother into the house.
"What's going on?" Kara asked as she sat next to her sister.
"Didn't Elle already tell you?"
"Yes. But you haven't." Kara said pulling Alex in for a hug. "It's really over?"
"Yeah." Alex said drawing comfort from the embrace.

"Coffee?" Eliza offered as Alex and Kara entered the kitchen the next morning.
"Sure." Alex said.
"Where's Elle?" Eliza questioned.
"Fast asleep." Kara replied as she sat next to Alex.
"Well she did have a late night." Eliza pointed out. She then looked at Alex and asked. "How are you this morning?"
"I'm okay." Alex said.
"I'm meant to be the one who is bad at lying." Kara pointed out as Elle ran into the room.
"Mom?" She asked.
"What's wrong?" Kara asked.
"I thought you'd gone."
"Not without saying goodbye." Kara said hugging her. "Do you want me to stay?"
"No. I just wanted to say goodbye." Elle replied before releasing Kara and moving over to Alex and hugging her. As she did so she asked.
"How long are you staying for?"
"I need to get back to work, so I'll head off after breakfast." Alex replied.
"I'll go with you." Kara said.
"You don't need to." Alex replied. "It'll be quicker for you to fly."
"I know. But I want to go with you."
"Fine, but you're not driving." Alex said.
"Why?" Kara asked.
"Because Elle wants us both to get to National City alive." Alex replied.
"My driving is not that bad." Kara protested.
"Not what dad says." Elle commented.
"What exactly does dad say?" Kara asked looking at her daughter.
"You should ask him." She replied.
"You are spending too much time with Cat and Lena." Kara complained as Elle side stepped the question.

"I'll see you next weekend." Kara said hugging Elle as they all stood on the driveway. "But call whenever you want."
"I will." Elle said.
"I'm going to miss you." Kara went on not releasing her.
"You can fly here in under five minutes." Elle reminded her.
"I think she wants you to tell her you'll miss her too." Alex said.
"I'll miss you too." Elle said as Kara finally released her. Once released Elle hugged Alex goodbye before watching the two get in the car.
"So it's just us." Eliza said as she stood with Elle waving her daughters off. "What do you want to do?"
"Beach." Elle said happily.
-00-
"Please tell me you didn't make Elle listen to this." Kara said as she went through the playlists.
"Elle chose the music." Alex said as she continued to drive.
"That wasn't a denial." Kara pointed out before asking. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you were drained. You needed to focus on your family."
"You are my family." Kara reminded her.
"You know what I mean. Wil still isn't sleeping, the bad guys aren't getting any less and you needed to focus on yourself." Alex said. "Besides I just needed time to think."
"Well now you need time with me, so you are staying with us for awhile."
"Kar-"
"I'm serious and I am not backing down. You are staying with us." Kara said as she found a song that she liked. "Now this is a song." She commented.
"Yes it is." Alex agreed.
