Chapter 103: The Void Master

The portal deposited us in a starry void, the ground beneath our feet composed of rocks boud together by mystical energy, and extendingfor some distance around us. There seemed to be no one here but us.

"So," sneered a voice from the void, "you've actually come this far. Unfortunate that you are so willing to march to your inevitable doom. Very well I'll do this myself!"

A section of the stars began moving, and I realized I recognized that shape. Broad wings, long, elegantly-curving horns, and sharp claws. It was a dragon, and an absolutely gargantuan one at that. As it wheeled around to face it I could see that its hide was patterned with enough stars to equal an entire galaxy, radiance pouring from its eyes, and a swirling mass of darkness hovering between its horns. I could feel the unfilitered, barely contained power of our foe, but steeled myself.

"You must be to one they call the Void Master," I replied.

"Indeed, young one. You have come a long way to challenge me," said the Void Master looking me over and the grinning, "I see an uncommon spirit in you. I would offer you a chance to be spared my wrath. Join me, become my herald. There are infinite worlds out there. Together, all will become our sole domain. We will be above any who seek to oppose us. No warriors, no creature, not even the Gods will be able to restain us!"

I clenched my claws into the stone beneath my feet, feeling the stone crack in my grasp. I looked on at the Void Master, and felt my fiery rage ready to boil over.

'No, this isn't the time for that,' I thought, 'I need a clear head, not blind fury'.

"An interesting offer, but you think I'd submit to one such as you!?" I growled back, "I haven't come all this way, worked so hard just to turn back on my path now. I… we will stop you here, protect all worlds from your madness!"

If the Void Master cared for my words He didn't show it, other than looking slightly disappointed.

"So be it," said the Void Master calmly, "then you shall die here".

It ws no longer time for words, now it was time to slay this ancient wyrm. Before our eyes, our foe seemed to split into four copies of itself, each one moving a different direction.

Narcrath channeled his magic, and nine motes of light appeared, orbiting his head, then one flew off toward one of the Void Master(s). The bolt of light brust against his hide, searing it a bit. Lydratir took aim and fired twice, the arrows seeming to fly to two different targets but both impacted and buried themselves in our foes hide. The Void Master(s) leveled off, and inhaled deeply, and unleashed a blast of star fire. We all braced against the force and managed to weather through it. The Void Master(s) then landed to catch his breath. Charles charged towards where the Void Master and his duplicates were, and attacked one of them. The one he targeted dissipated, leaving only three targets. He tried again, and a second of the duplactes vanished. Chalres tried a third time, and once more the duplicate was destroyed, leaving only one target. I moved up to face this enemy dragon in melee, tearing at him with claw and fang. Krisyra called upon her magic, and a brilliant beam of light lanced out at the Void Master. However, our foe seemed to resist the effects. Uxarix moved up to join us, and jabbed at the Void Master with his rapier, the blade flaring with radiance. His second strike seemed to stagger the Void Master for a moment, but it recovered. The air near Charles, Uxarix, and I seemed to distort, and we were nearly knocked off our feet at te Void Master teleported away from us.

Narcrath pointed a finger towards the Void Master's new position, and magical energy blasted it, though it seemed to resist the full effect. Narcrath launched another bolt of radiance, wounding the Void Master further. Lydratir fired again, two more arrows pierced our foes scales. The Void Master glared at us, and unleashed an aura of strange energy. For a moment, I felt a twinge of fear but I pushed past it. The Void Master then leapt towards Lydratir, snapping at him with his jaws. Lydratir was caught, and struck hard. He evaded the first swipe of our foe's claws, but was caught be the second swipe, wound him badly. Charles hurried over to assist Lydratir again our foe, his greatsword cutting deep into our foe's hide. I moved up to aid aid my allies as well, my claws piercing the Void Master's scales as well. His once pristine hide now covered with gashes and nebulae of his blood. The space around of foe warped again, and it teleported away, knocking Charles to the ground in the process. Krisyra refocused on the Void Master, and fired off another beam of light, blasting it again, and again it seemed to resist it. Uxarix moved to where the Void Master now was, and struck again. His rapier flared with radiant power, and seemed to repel our foe. I could see that the orb of darkness between his horns was rippling chaotically, looking unstable.

Narcrath brought his hands together, and magic began building up, becoming an orb of lightning. He sent it fly at the Void Master, and as it flew the orb expanded and the charge build even higher slamming into our foe and making in roar in agony as the lightning coursed through it's entire body. Just as the lightning finished its journey, a bolt of light collided with the Void Master, leaving our foe on his last legs. Lydratir drew back his bow, and fired one last time. The arrow flew true, and buried itself right between the Void Master's eyes.

The Void Master slumped, and started laughing and coughing as the darkness above him crackled with energy, and he slowly lifted his head to smirk at us.

"You… you think this is the end?" snarled the Void Master, "no… this in naught but the beginning. I cannot be destroyed so easily… you, though… you have no such luxury!"

This those final words, the Void Master exploded into raw energy, which then began to collapse into itself, taking the voidspace aroud us with it. I could feel the wind whipping at me as this place was destroyed. We needed to get out of here, now.

"Everyone, get close!" I shouted, "We've only got one chance at this!

My companions gathered close to me, and I focused on the stone Verrax had given me. It began to activate, the magic swirling around us. However, the waves of energy were already too close, and we were going to get hit. In the back of my mind, I heard a familiar voice.

"Listen well, Valignatirisk," said Ashardalon, "I have seen much in my life, and while I slept within this crystal, I thought upon why I was inspired to do this. I understand now. It was to meet you. You who have defied what has been thought for so long to be hard fact. You must survive to herald the change in the world. You are a worthy, worthy to be what I knew from the moment you first put on the necklace: my descendant. Now I know what is to be my fate. Farewell, Valignatirisk".

The necklace glowed brightly, and then shattered. Light poured out, forming into a spectral red dragon. He spared my one last glance.

"Yes, farewell, young one," said Ashardalon, "may the winds ever be in your favor".

A pulse of protective magic wrapped around us, and the stone sparked to life, pulling us away from the Voidspace. I held my companions close, seeing Lydratir fall unconscious from his wounds. The journey was rough, but before we knew it, we shot out of the portal and crashed to the ground. The last thing I saw before passing out was the sun high overhead.

A/N: And there we go! The void master is defeated, and our heroes returned to the material plane. Next time, the aftermath. See you then!
