A/N: Thanks for the comments. The next 2 or 3 chapters will be a little more angsty than normal - but the final chapter of this story will be back to the more sedate fluff. With this one, and the next couple of chapters, the assumption is that the latest cross over never happened and everyone lives on their own worlds.
Guest - Thanks for the prompt, but I can't see myself writing any new stories in the near future.
"So are you looking forward to your birthday?" Lena asked as she and Elle walked back to Kara's house from the park. "What am I asking? Of course you are, you get cake and not even your dad can complain. So have you told your parents what you want yet?"
"No."
"How long are you going to toy with them?"
"I'm not toying with them." Elle argued. "It's better when it is a surprise. Besides they always get me good presents."
"Fair enough. What would you like from me? And trust me a surprise from me would not be better. You never want a surprise from a Luthor."
"Umm, Lego?"
"Lego? And what will you build?" Lena asked.
"A city."
"You don't like this one?"
"It could be better." Elle commented.
"Lego it is then." Lena said as they approached the front door.
"Thank you." Elle smiled.
As they walked into the house they saw Barry talking to Kara.
"Good you're back." Kara said approaching Elle.
"Are you leaving?" Elle asked looking upset.
"I have to go help Barry with something."
"Don't go." Elle pleaded.
"I have to. It's really important. But I promise I will be back for your birthday." She said hugging Elle. Pulling away she added. "I love you so much and I promise I will be back soon."
"I'll look after her." Barry added, his words not offering any comfort to Elle.

"We're back." Adam called as he walked through the front door with Wil and Krypto.
"Welcome home." Lena said.
"Hey." Adam said surprised to see her. "Everything okay?"
"Um, that is a subjective question."
"Elle?" Adam asked paling.
"Is fine. But a little upset. Kara had to go to Barry's world. She left this for you." She said handing Adam an envelope. "Elle isn't taking her departure very well. I'll look after Wil if you want to go talk to her."
"Thanks." He said handing the baby to Lena.
-00-
"Hey." Adam said entering Elle's room.
"Hey." Elle said not looking round from where she lay facing the wall.
"She wouldn't have gone if it wasn't important." Adam said as he sat on the side of the bed.
"Aren't we important?"
"You and Wil are the most important things in mom's life. Whatever the danger on Barry's world for your mom to go means it poses a danger to you. In the mean time I'm here and I'm not going anywhere." He said, his words causing Elle to sit up and hug him.
"Sometimes I hate that mom is Supergirl." She said.
"I know." Adam said hugging her tightly. "But mom loves you more than anything. So do I."
-00-
"Hey." Alex said entering the house.
"You heard?" Lena guessed.
"Kara sent a not very informative text." Alex explained. "How's Elle?"
"Upset. Adam is talking to her."
"Any idea what the emergency was?" Alex asked.
"No. But she looked pretty grim."
"For her to leave that fast it must have been bad." Alex said as she sat down. "Why didn't she ask for back up though?" She added sounding annoyed.
"I don't know. She left a note for Adam, there may be more details in it." Lena suggested.
"Maybe." Alex said frowning.
"Is there anything I can do to help in the mean time?" Lena asked.
"Adam may need help distracting Elle. Especially if Kara is gone for a while."
"I'll clear my schedule." Lena offered as the door opened and Adam and Elle walked in. Seeing Alex Elle immediately went to her and hugged her.
"Hey." Alex said returning the hug. "I know you are upset but I need to ask you a favour."
"What?" Elle asked pulling away.
"Do you know what tonight was meant to be?"
"Sisters' night."
"That's right. But seeing Kara isn't here I'm going to be flying solo. But seeing you are a sister you technically qualify. So do you want to come?"
"Really?" Elle asked.
"Really."
"Can Lena and Kelly come too? I mean they are also sisters."
"Sure." Alex replied.

Waking up a couple of days later Elle felt a burning in her eyes. Shutting them she tried to regain control. Desperately she tried to use the techniques J'onn and Kara had taught her and eventually felt the burning dull, although not disappear. Opening her eyes, she felt the burning begin to grow again and came up with a new idea. Sprinting downstairs she headed for the backdoor only for Adam to call from the kitchen.
"Everything okay?"
"Just going to play outside." Elle called back before sprinting into the garden and going to the most secluded spot where she stopped fighting her heat vision and instead looked at the ground and released it, causing a small hole to form. Eventually her heat vision stopped by itself and she sat down and relaxed. Convinced she was in control again she finally got up and went inside. As she walked past the kitchen Adam came out and asked.
"You okay?"
"Fine." Elle said.
"You know you can talk to me?" Adam pressed as he crouched down in front her. "So what's up?"
Before Elle could answer Wil started screaming.
"Stay here, I'll be back in a minute." Adam said standing.
Ignoring her father Elle returned to her room.

A few days later Adam called for Elle to come in from the backyard for lunch. Not getting a response he headed outside and found Elle lying unmoving on the ground.
Rushing to her side Adam called for her, becoming more and more alarmed when she didn't respond. When he reached her and still couldn't wake her he activated his watch and continued to try and wake Elle.
"Adam?" Alura asked landing at his side.
"It's Elle. She was out here unconscious." Adam said, his face full of guilt and concern.
"I'll take her to the DEO." Alura said scooping Elle up in her arms.
"We'll meet you there." Adam said before watching them fly off. As Adam stood he suddenly noticed the perfectly symmetrical holes that lined the ground and started to guess what had happened.
-00-
"Where is she?" Adam asked as he ran through the DEO holding Wil.
"Infirmary." J'onn said. "Let me take him." He offered holding out his arms.
"Thanks." Adam said handing over Wil. "Is she okay?"
"She is. Alex said she solar flared and that is why she collapsed. She's awake now and seems fine. Although we still don't know what caused the solar flare." He assured Adam.
"I have an idea about that." Adam said before hurrying to the infirmary.
-00-
"What were you thinking?" Adam demanded as he entered the infirmary where Alex was running a test on Elle. "Your powers aren't toys. Especially heat vision. It's dangerous."
"What are you talking about?" Alex asked confused.
"She has been using her heat vision to burn holes in the ground." Adam said. "That's why she solar flared." He explained before turning back to Elle. "How could you be so stupid? I thought you were better than this. What would mom say if she was here?"
"Well she isn't here is she." Elle argued.
"So what, this was attention seeking?" Adam asked before turning to Alex and asking. "Can you lock her up here?"
"Ummm-" Alex said.
"Maybe some time in a cell will make her thing about what she did." He said before storming out.
"Stay here." Alex instructed Elle before rushing after the irate father.
"Adam." Alex called hurrying after him. As she reached his side she said. "Don't you think that you were a little harsh with the cell threat?"
"She's my kid." Adam pointed out before calming himself and apologising. "I'm sorry. It's just when I saw her lying there, I thought she was dead."
"She's okay." Alex assured him.
"Is she really? I'm meant to be looking after her and had no idea she had been burning holes in the ground for days. What type of father am I?"
"You are a great dad." Alex said. "You can't watch watch Elle 24/7. Especially as you are already exhausted. Look, why don't you take Wil to Cat's and then get some sleep. I'll keep Elle here and run more tests. When you are felling better come back and talk to Elle."
"Okay." Adam sighed.
"I've got her. Get some rest." Alex said squeezing his arm before heading back to the infirmary.
-00-
"Are you putting me in a cell?" Elle asked when Alex re-entered the infirmary.
"Well your dad is pretty mad. But for now you are constrained to this room."
"Where's dad?"
"He's gone home."
"He left me here?" Elle asked looking hurt.
"I said I'd look after you." Alex said as an announcement came over the tannoy system.
"Agent Danvers report to the control room."
"I'll be back in a moment." Alex said. "Don't move." She added before hurrying off.
As she reached the control room she saw Supergirl, The Flash and Batwoman.
"Welcome back." Alex greeted. "From your friends being here I assume you didn't fix the problem?"
"No. We think he is here, or coming here." Kara explained. "If he does this planet is in huge danger."
"Okay, well before we discuss that we need to talk about something else." Alex said indicating Kara should follow her.
"She does know we are trying to find a creature hellbent on destroying this planet?" Kate asked Barry.
"I don't know. But Kara does so I'm sure she'll be back in a moment." He replied just as they heard Kara yelling.
"I didn't know Kara could do mad." Kate commented.
"Oh, Oliver has made her mad before, but not this mad." Barry said as Alex approached them again. "Wait, she isn't yelling at you?"
"No." Alex said.
"Hmm, sorry, I just, in my head always pictured her yelling at you like that." Barry explained.
"Who exactly is she yelling at?" Kate asked. "And do they need protection?"
"That would be Elle." Alex explained.
"What did she do?" Barry asked just as sirens started ringing.
"I assume that is a bad thing?" Kate asked as Alex turned to one of the panels.
"Winn?" She asked.
"We're in lock down." He explained.
"Why?"
"Alien intruder, one known to the system as being bad, very bad."
"Where?" Kara asked hurrying back into the control room.
"Level 5." Winn said pulling up imagery.
"That's him." Kate commented.
"We have to contain him." Kara said. "If he gets into the city thousands could die."
"Lockdown should hold." Winn said as J'onn entered the control room. Seeing the screen he asked. "That's what you have been fighting?"
"Yeah, we thought we were winning, but that's just what he wanted us to think." Kara said.
"You're lucky to be alive." J'onn commented.
"You know what that is?" Alex asked.
"Yes. A very dangerous species that can physically change."
"You mean a shapeshifter?" Winn asked.
"Much more than that. I can change my appearance, it can can change at the molecular level. For example if it discovers you are particularly sensitive to something like Kryptonite it can just change it's arm into Kryptonite."
"Been there." Kara said before looking at Alex. "We have to get Elle out of here."
"There's no way to override the lockdown." J'onn jumped in. "There are five species that if detected moving freely round the DEO trigger lockdown level eleven."
"I thought there were only eight levels?" Winn said.
"No. I had hoped we would never need to go above eight, but there are more. And this is one of the most dangerous species."
"So what do we do?" Winn asked.
"We don't know." Kate confessed.
"It has no weaknesses." Barry said. "If we starve him of oxygen he adapts to not needing it. We freeze him and he turns almost silicon and gets stronger."
"So how do we stop him?" Alex asked.
"There is a way, but I'll need time." J'onn said.
"We'll buy it for you." Kara said. "But first I need to get Elle somewhere safe."
"Containment chamber six?" Alex suggested.
"That might work." J'onn agreed as Kara disappeared.
"I'll start keeping our friend busy." Barry said zooming off.
"Alex, I'll need your help." J'onn said walking off.
"I'll help Kara?" Kate asked no one particular as she followed the direction Kara had gone in.
-00-
"What's happening?" Elle asked as Kara entered the infirmary.
"There is a very dangerous alien and it is not safe, especially while you don't have powers. We can't get out of the DEO so I am putting you somewhere safe." Kara said taking Elle's hand and leading her through the DEO.
"Kara." Barry gasped over the radio. "It got past me. Think it's looking for J'onn. I'll be back on the trail in a minute."
"Come on." Kara said tugging Elle harder moments before they came face to face with the alien.
"Run." Kara ordered Elle.
"But-" Elle protested.
"Go." Kara stated. "Now."
Knowing better than to argue Elle ran back towards the infirmary, as she did so she ran into Kate.
"Elle?" Batwoman guessed. When Elle nodded she went on. "I'm Kate, I'm a friend of your mom's."
Before Elle could respond they heard Kara scream and Elle immediately tried to run back towards her mother. As she entered the room she saw the monster surrounded by a blur that she assumed was Barry. More importantly she saw her mother lying on the ground, blood pouring from her stomach.
"Mom!" Elle screamed as she ran to Kara while Kate tried to hold her back.
When Kara saw them she looked at Kate and gasped through the pain. "Take her. Please. Get her out of here."
Noticing the portal device in Kara's hand Kate nodded and took the device. Having activated the portal she grabbed the screaming and reluctant Elle and dragged her through the portal.
