Chapter 50: Reunited
"Cops!" Ernesto yelled through the warehouse. Without needing to say another word, Juaquin and Manny dropped the drugs in their hands and everyone started to move towards the back door. Chris hesitated as she was still staring Franco down. She felt someone grab her hand and pull her away. She looked up to see it was Alonzo dragging her towards the back door in an attempt to escape. There was a loud bang behind them as the door flew open and shouts of "NYPD" and "drop your weapons" filled the space. Another bang in front of them and the back door flew open and another SWAT team rushed in. They all stopped in their tracks as the warehouse filled with police surrounding them with guns trained on them, backing them up into the center of the warehouse. The same command was coming from all different directions.
"Hands up! Hands! Let me see your hands!"
Franco hadn't even attempted to run. He stood back, still in his corner with that stupid grin on his face. He put his hands up then walked over to where the rest of them were gathered, still holding their weapons and still very confused about how this was happening. Olivia steeped forward and took control of the situation. All the other officers in the building quieted and she gave them direct orders.
"Put your weapons down and get on the ground now" she said firmly. Chris locked eyes with her then looked around at the other cops, particularly the uniformed officers. In the back, behind Franco, she saw Schiller. She guessed then that Franco must've tipped him off about the raid. He never had any intention of letting things go smoothly. He was selfish, as always.
"He did this" Orlando said to Alonzo through gritted teeth. "I told you we couldn't trust that fool" he said angrily. He took the sling on his weapon from around his body and laid his rifle on the floor. Ernesto followed suit then they both got down on the ground. The rest of them followed their lead, slowly taking their guns from their waistbands and placing them on the ground before laying on the ground with their hands out. Franco, Alonzo and Christina were the last ones on their feet. Both of them were staring Franco down.
"You're gonna pay for this ese" Alonzo said glaring at Franco. Christina pulled her weapon from her waistband, put it on the ground and slid it across the floor to Olivia's feet then got down with everyone else.
"Come on man, give it up" Fin said with his weapon trained on Alonzo. He finally relented, gave up his weapon and got down on the ground.
"You too" Amaro said from behind Franco. "Put the gun down and get down on the floor". SWAT had already put flex cuffs on everyone except Christina, Alonzo, Franco. Two officers stepped forward with cuffs for Chris and Alonzo but when it seemed like Franco was about to become a problem Olivia gestured for them to wait. "Let's go, on the ground" Nick ordered again. He continued to stand there with this defiant look in his eyes.
"Franco what are doing?" Christina asked looking up at him. "Get down". She hoped he wasn't about to do what she was thinking.
"You…. you don't get to tell me what to do anymore" he said glaring at her. "I told you…. I'm not going to jail". He reached around his back and let his hand hover above his gun.
"Franco don't be stupid" she said in a biting tone.
"Franco listen to her man" Schiller said speaking up. "We can work this out". Franco laughed.
"Work what out?" he asked. "She knows what I did; what we did" he corrected. "We're not walking away from this and I'm not spending the rest of my life in protective custody. No. Hell no!". Nick saw him grip the butt of his weapon.
"Take your hand off that weapon" he instructed. Now every cop in there was on high alert.
"Franco, don't do this" Chris pleaded with him. "It doesn't have to end like this".
"Let him die" Orlando said nonchalantly. He received a swift kick in the leg from the SWAT officer standing near him accompanied with an order to shut his mouth.
"Franco…"Chris said, starting to ask him again to surrender. But he didn't let her finish.
"This ends on my terms". He started to pull the gun from his waistband when one shot rang out through the warehouse and his knees buckled. Nick moved in, removed the gun from his waistband and started to cuff him.
"You're not getting off that easy" he said in Franco's ear.
"Ah! Take it easy man" Franco yelled in pain as Nick pulled his arm behind his back. The new wound in his shoulder bled through his shirt and blood dripped down to the floor.
"Get the medics" Olivia said to an officer standing near the door. He nodded then stepped outside, returning a few minutes later with two medics in tow. They checked on Franco while the officers got the prisoners on their feet and started loading them into the wagon for transport. Fin and Carisi put Reyes in the back of their car to ride to the precinct with them.
"Well that didn't go as planned" Carisi said getting settled into the passenger seat. Fin opened the driver's side door, got in the car and started the engine.
"What the hell is Schiller doing here?" Chris asked angrily. "Did you guys tell him about this?"
"Hell no" Fin said looking over his shoulder at her. Now Chris knew for sure.
"Franco" she said through gritted teeth. "I could kill him".
"Take a number" Carisi said only slightly joking. The van pulled away and Fin followed behind them. They made it to the precinct and filled the holding cells with their prisoners while waiting to start what was going to be a long day and night of processing. The men went into one cell and Rosita and Chris went into another cell with the three women from Felipe's crew. They took the left side while Chris and Rosita stayed to the right.
"You okay?" Chris asked looking at Rosita. She silently nodded her head. She could tell she was trying hard not to cry. Beneath her tough exterior Rosita was a really sweet, sensitive woman. Chris knew she wouldn't do well in prison. She was hoping to do whatever she could to help her out on the charges. "It's gonna be ok" she assured her.
"Awww" they heard from across the cell. "Does the little baby need her blanket". Chris didn't know any of their names and she wasn't interested in learning them. She most definitely wasn't interested in taking any of their crap.
"You don't wanna start with me" she said firmly.
"Oh are you her mommy?" she said getting laughs from her friends. "Or her nanny?"
"Oh honey, you don't wanna know who I am. Trust me".
"Is that a threat?" she asked getting up from the bench.
"I don't make threats". Chris didn't make any efforts to move from where she was sitting even though this girl was obviously looking for a fight. She started walking towards Chris when stepped in.
"Ay" he said loudly. She stopped in her tracks. "Sit ya ass down. Don't make me come in there". She turned around and went back to her seat.
"Saved by daddy dearest" she said leaning back against the wall and crossing her arms over her chest.
"Yes, you were" Chris said with a smirk.
"Reyes, Moreno" Amaro said unlocking the cell, "you're up". They both got up and walked out together. Carisi took Rosita to interrogation one and Chris went with Nick to interrogation two and left her alone. A minute later the door opened and Amanda walked in. They just stood there and stared at each other for a moment. Chris was the first to move, unable to contain herself any longer. She'd been so preoccupied all day with everything happening with the raid and then keeping up appearances in the holding cell that she hadn't really thought of Amanda. But the moment she laid eyes on her every ounce of how much she'd missed her came rushing over her at once. She wrapped her up in her arms and held on with all her strength. Amanda returned her embraced and buried her face in Chris' neck. She inhaled her scent and completely relaxed into her. Christina pulled away and got another look at her. She brought her hands up to either side of her face and brought their lips together for their first kiss in entirely too long. They finally separated when they needed to breath.
"I missed you so much" Chris said softly.
"I missed you too. I was so worried" Amanda sighed.
"I know. I'm sorry but it's over now" she assured her. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere". They shared another kiss when there was a knock on the door. Fin stuck his head in and told them Barba was ready to start with the negotiations. They went to Benson's office to discuss what deals everyone would be offered. Chris had to decide if she wanted to maintain her cover until all the deals were ironed out and all the players were off to prison or if she wanted to out herself as an undercover and help out in the negotiations. There was a knock and Carisi came into the office.
"We got a problem" he announced. "Franco's mouthing off in the holding cell".
"I thought he was still at the hospital" Barba said confused.
"They treated and released him" he said filling them in. "Uniforms brought him in about ten minutes ago".
"And what's he saying?" Chris asked already having an idea of what he was saying.
"He's telling the crew that you're a cop and that you sold them out".
"Well" she said with a sigh, "I guess I don't need to decide anymore". She was now more annoyed than ever with Franco and she couldn't wait to be rid of him. "Carisi can you put him in interrogation one?" He looked to Olivia who gave him a subtle nod.
"One scumbag to interrogation one, coming right up" he said as he walked back out of the office.
"I'll deal with him and then I wanna talk to Alonzo, ok?" Chris asked even though she was telling more than asking permission. "Alonzo's the key to getting higher up the food chain" she said looking to Barba. "I know he'll do whatever you ask him to if it means his family is taken care of. Jauquin, Laila, Rosita, maybe a few others" she said naming the important people, "he'll cooperate if it means you'll cut them a break on the charges".
"As long as he gives us everyone, I'm sure the DA would be more than willing to lower the charges for the others" Barba said confidently. Carisi stuck his in the office and said Franco was waiting in interrogation.
"Alright, let's get this done" Olivia said moving towards the door. She was ready for all interactions with Brooklyn Narcotics to be done. No loose ends. She didn't want to her or her detectives to have to deal with them again. They all filed out of her office to go watch the interrogation. Olivia and Barba went inside with Christina while Nick, Amanda, Fin and Carisi watched through the window.
"You've really outdone yourself this time" Chris said taking a seat across the table from him.
"So have you" he said, his voice laced with distain. "You were supposed to have my back but you didn't. You stabbed me in it instead".
"You sold drugs. You killed people. You ordered the murder of another cop" she said listing his transgressions. "Your biggest mistake was bringing me in thinking that I would go along with it. I didn't stab you in your back. You put that knife there yourself. And then" she scoffed, "you thought you'd take the easy way out and kill yourself" she said referring to his stunt with the gun in the warehouse. "Did you really think it would end that way?"
"Does it really matter?" She shrugged.
"I guess not. Not anymore". She looked at him and saw a completely different man than the one she'd met years ago. He was small and defeated. She shook her head in disbelief that it'd taken her this long to see him this way. "You're a coward. You always were, weren't you? I'm just seeing it clearly for the very first time" she said disappointed that he wasn't the man she thought he was. "I really did want to help you, Franco" she said honestly. "Not anymore. You're gonna have to live with everything you've done". But after some thought about whether he'd really live with it or kill himself like he wanted the officers to do for him in the warehouse she added, "or not. It's up to you. Whether you cooperate and help yourself or you don't and go to prison for the rest of your life, it's all up to you. Don't count on anything from me. I'm done with you". With that she got up from the table and left the interrogation room. Benson and Barba stayed to try to get information out of Franco but he didn't seem at all interested in cooperating even though cooperating meant time off whatever charges he negotiated with the DA's office. They left the room and continued on to Alonzo. If Franco wasn't interested in helping himself, they weren't going to waste any more time on him.
"So it's true then?" Alonzo asked as she walked in the interrogation room. "You're a cop?"
"I am" she said simply, pulling the chair from under the table and taking a seat.
"You came to take me down?" she shook her head.
"My job was never about you" she corrected. "My purpose was to find out what happened to Elena. You became important to helping me find that out" she explained.
"A means to an end".
"Yes" she said simply.
"So what now? I give up some people, you cut me a deal?" he asked, already knowing how this would go. "Not interested".
"Are you interested in a deal for your brother, your sister, Rosita, Monte; all the ones you call family?" she asked. "Because the ADA" she said pointing over her shoulder at Barba, "is willing to cut them a break…. if you cooperate". He only needed to think about it for a moment.
"What do you want to know?" he asked, cuing Barba to step in. It was as easy as Christina said it would be. He gave up the names of other players in the area and his suppliers in order to get a deal for his family. Once their lawyers arrived, deals were ironed out and all the prisoners in holding were sent to central booking to be processed for arraignment. Deals ranged from probation to prison sentences no longer than ten years based on involvement in the operation. Those who refused a deal would receive a trial date. Schiller and Hawes followed Franco's lead, refusing to cooperate. They lawyered up and were held in protective custody. Chris gave her full statement, debriefed with Brooklyn Narcotics and then was given an appointment to see the department psych before she could return to duty. It was nearing two o'clock in the morning when they were finally able to leave the precinct and head home. Since it was so late, they decided to on going to Amanda's apartment. Amanda drove while Chris rode silently in the passenger seat. She tried to push the thoughts of everything that had happened out of her head. The drugs, the guns, Elena, and the man she'd been forced to kill; she tried to forget it all. Futile as her effort was, she kept trying.
Amanda pulled in front of her apartment building and parked, shutting off the engine. They sat quietly for a few minutes before Christina finally opened her door and got out of the car. Amanda followed her lead, giving her enough silence and space to decompress. When they got into the apartment, Christina was greeted by Frannie, who was incredibly happy to see her. She petted her for a minute, allowing her to lick her hands and face, then proceeded to the bedroom where she undressed before going in the bathroom to shower. Amanda sat on the bed for a minutes, debating what to do. Then, with a shrug, she undressed and went into the bathroom. Steam was already filling the bathroom, creating a film on the mirror. Amanda left the door cracked to let some air filter in. She went over and slid the shower door open, stepping in before closing the door behind her. Christina just stood there under the water, letting it pour down over her from head to toe. She felt Amanda's arms creep around her waist; her lips gently caressing her shoulder blade. It didn't take much before their lips met and their hands began roaming over each other's bodies. They'd sorely missed being together this way. When the water started to run cold, they exited the shower and moved to the bed, making up for lost time. Christina fell asleep first. Amanda laid there silently, watching her chest rise and fall. For the longest time, she'd wanted someone to come home to; someone she couldn't imagine being without. She'd wanted someone to have adventures with, make memories and build a life. She'd never imagined that that someone would be another woman. But laying there now, watching the woman she loved sleeping peacefully next to her, she couldn't imagine it ever being anyone else. Now that she was back, she never wanted her to leave again.
