She Was An Introvert

I am riding the bus to camp. A lot of kids are talking and chatting it up. I heard we were going to be across from a boy's camp. I do hope Chuck is there. I think he kind of likes me. It's nice when a boy likes you like that. I also hope his funny-looking friend with the big nose, Snoopy, is there, too. That kid is a lot of fun. Anyway, I think this trip to camp is going to be great. I can feel it.

A few minutes later…

There's this girl here at camp. I haven't gotten her name or anything. She's a dorky-looking kid, always with her nose in a book. And those glasses! I wonder how she sees with them. I think she could use a friend. She needs a friend. And if ANYONE is going to be a friend with her, the Peppermint Patty will be that friend!

Peppermint Patty walked up to the girl reading her book. She immediately said, "Hi, kid! How are ya?!"

"Uh, okay I guess," she said, softly.

"How come you're reading?" asked Patty. "There's plenty to do here at camp."

"I'm not really into camp activities like that," the girl said.

"Well at least try," said Patty. "At least once and see if you do like it."

"Well I guess it wouldn't hurt. What's your name by the way?"

"Glad you asked, kid. My name is Peppermint Patty! What's yours?"

"My name is Marceline Carlin."

"Marceline?! Do you have a nickname or something?"

"Well people call me 'Marcie' for short."

"Well that is what I'll do. You will be Marcie to me. It's nice to meet you, Marcie."

"It's a pleasure to meet you too, sir."

" 'SIR'?!" exclaimed Patty. "You know I'm a girl, right?"

"Of course, sir, I know."

"Then don't call me 'sir'. You don't call a girl 'sir'."

"You don't?"

"No. You call them 'ma'am' or 'Ms.', or if they're married, 'Mrs.'. But never 'sir'. 'Sir' is for men or boys."

"I get it, sir."

"Oh good grief!"
