Charles knew exactly when the time was right...
Ever since his mother had given him the engagement ring for Molly Charles had been planning the perfect proposal. It had taken him a while, but eventually he had managed to get everything perfect. He was going to take Molly to the restaurant back in Bath where they had had their first date, it had been the place where he had realised that he was going to spend his life with her and it seemed fitting as the place where he would ask her to spend her life with him. He would propose to her there with champagne and chocolate cake. Then after she had hopefully said yes, they would go back to a hotel room and celebrate their love for each other.

Molly and Charles were in their bedroom together getting ready to go out for the night. Charles hadn't told Molly a thing about where they would be going and she was suspicious to say the least.
"It you don't tell me where we're going Charles, how am I going to know what to wear?" Molly whined as she stood in front of her large wardrobe wearing nothing but her underwear.
"You would go dressed like that if it was up to me!" Charles replied, getting up to walk into the en-suite bathroom. "But I don't think the other diners would like it very much!"
Molly rolled her eyes and continued to scrutinise her wardrobe. She was about to plead Charles again to tell her where they were going when her phone rang from her bedside table. She walked over and picked up her phone, when she saw Rebecca was the one calling her she furrowed her eyebrows in confusion and pressed the green answer button.
"Oh Molly thank goodness!" came the exasperated voice of Rebecca on the other end of the line "I've been trying desperately to get hold of Charles but he won't pick up! Sam's had an accident, he's been hit by a car after an idiot came flying out of nowhere, we're at the hospital now. The doctor's are in with him, he might have to have an operation." She choked out in a sob.
Molly gasped in shock, but knew she had to remain strong for her friend.
"OK Rebecca. You go back to Sammy, everything is going to be ok I promise. Charles and I will be with you very soon." Molly told her.
"Thank you Molly." Rebecca whispered before hanging up.
Molly took a deep breath to calm herself as Charles walked out the bathroom.
"Who was that?" he asked, sitting back on the bed to put his socks on.
"Sammy's had an accident, he's at the hospital now. Rebecca said he might gonna need surgery." Molly whispered trying to suppress her own tears. "I'm going to get dressed and then we're going to drive to the hospital. They both need us..." Molly said as the tears finally took hold of her and she began to sob.
Charles, who had gone white at the news jumped up and hugged her tightly.
"My boy's tough. He's going to be ok." He reassured her.
Molly nodded and hugged Charles tighter.

Half an hour after talking to Rebecca, Molly arrived at the hospital with Charles. Rebecca was waiting for them by the main entrance to the accident and emergency department. The minute she saw them she ran in their direction, what surprised Molly was that she immediately flung her arms around Charles when she reached them. Even though Molly and Rebecca were friends, there always remained an element of tension between Charles and Rebecca, but obviously she had decided to put it to one side for the sake of her son.
"I've never been so glad to see you." Rebecca cried into Charles' shoulder "It was so awful, I heard him scream and then I turned around a there he was, on the floor."
Charles patted his ex wife gently on the back.
"How is he?" he asked.
"When I got back after calling Molly the doctor had gone, the nurse said he would be back very soon so we'd better get back there now." Rebecca replied, indicating which way they needed to go.
When they arrived at Sam's little side room the doctor was just arriving back.
"Ah Mr and Mrs James!" the doctor said in greeting, "Perfect timing!"
Rebecca followed the doctor into the room. Molly hung back, her hesitation was noticed by Charles.
"You go in, he can only have two people at a time." Molly told him in response to his questioning look.
Charles frowned at her but went in after Rebecca, only to return a few moments later.
"You're fine to come in, I told them you were Sam's stepmum. Also the minute Sam heard you were outside he asked to see you. So in you come. " He held his hand out to her and they walked into the room together.
Sam was laying on the bed, laughing with one of the nurses. Apart from a few cuts and bruises on his face and the fact his leg was all packed up in a big orange boot, he looked absolutely fine.
"Molly!" Sam said when he saw her enter the room.
Molly smiled at the boy and walked over the room to give him a gentle hug.
"This young man has been incredibly lucky," the doctor told Charles, Rebecca and Molly "the break in his leg hadn't been displaced and therefore won't require surgery." He added smiling as the three adults breathed a sigh of relief "Once our nurses have his leg in plaster, I don't see why he can't go home."
Rebecca turned to the doctor to ask him more questions, whilst Charles and Molly talked to Sam.
"Can I have a red bandage on my leg?" Sam asked them.
"I'm sure you can have whatever colour you like, I'm just glad you're OK scamp!" Charles said ruffling his sons hair.
Rebecca re-joined the group after her conversation with the doctor.
"Mummy." Sam asked his mother "Can I go home with dad and Molly please? I want to make sure Luna knows I'm ok."
Rebecca laughed slightly at his logic but nodded her head in agreement.
"If that's OK with your dad and Molly," Rebecca replied turning to the people in question who nodded with a smile. "In that case I'm going to phone my friend, I'm definitely in need of a few drinks after tonight!" she said with a giggle.
Molly raised an eyebrow at her mention of a 'friend' and made a mental note to probe her about it later...

After what seemed like hours, Molly and Charles had finally left the hospital and taken Sam with them. After arriving back home, and sharing a take away much to Sam's delight, everyone was sat cuddled up on the sofa. Sam was fast asleep, knocked out from the painkillers he was on. He had his head resting on Molly's stomach and his leg that was in plaster was propped up on a cushion. Luna was sat purring away on his knee. Charles had his arm tightly around Molly, who in turn had her arm around Sam. Charles watched Molly closely, she was almost radiating love for him and his son and he knew at that exact moment what he had to do.
"This isn't exactly the way I had anticipated my night panning out..." Charles said, freeing his arm from Molly and sitting up straight. "We were meant to be going back to where we had our first date you know, that was the big surprise you see." He told her before continuing, "I was going to give you this over champagne and cake, but seeing you right now with my son in your arms, this feels right." He stood up and walked over to his jacket that had been discarded on the other sofa and pulled the black box containing his grandmother's engagement ring out of one of the pockets. He then walked back to where Molly was and got down on one knee in front of her.
"I genuinely don't have the words to tell you how much I love you. But I decided a long time ago that I was going to spend my life with you, you don't really get a say in the matter. You do however get to decide if you want to spend it being my wife." Charles said, opening the box to reveal a beautiful emerald cut diamond, set in platinum.
Molly's breath caught in her throat.
"I decided a long time ago that I was going to spend my life with you too. I would love to be your wife." She giggled through the tears that were streaming down her face.
Charles took the ring out of the box with a shaky hand and slid it onto Molly's finger. It was a perfect fit.
"This ring was my grandmother's" he murmured "my mum said it was destined to go to you, I think I agree with her."
"I'm not being funny," Molly said "As beautiful as this ring is, we can talk about it later. Right now I would like you to kiss me and then take your son upstairs before meeting me in our bed ."
Charles didn't need telling twice, he kissed Molly with as much passion as he could muster before carefully lifting up his son and carrying him upstairs to his bed. As promised, his brand new fiancée was waiting for him in their bed when he got there.
