CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
Kelly sat on her couch after Money in the Bank, shocked to no end about everything that had just gone on in front of her. Her phone rang next to her, and numbly, automatically, she picked it up and put it to her ear.
"Hello?"
"Babe, did you see what just happened?"
Kelly smiled weakly, but it just couldn't make her happy, as she turned off her TV and tried to focus on her conversation with CM Punk. "Yeah, I saw."
"You were watching?"
"Of course I was. I ordered the show." Kelly laughed just as weakly as she had smiled, and then tried to refocus. "Hey, um… have you heard anything about Eve?"
Punk was giddy. "No, I haven't. Not really, anyway. She should be fine, she got taken off right after they got her into the ambulance. Come on, aren't you excited?"
"I know. I saw that, too. And, of course I'm excited. You were great out there. I'm just worried about Eve… you know how worried I was when she was just out for a few weeks. Now she's out for… however long she's going to be gone. And she got seriously hurt out there." Kelly's eyes were tearing up. "I can't be happy right now."
It was obvious in his voice that he wasn't quite as upset as she was, but he tried to be, anyway. "I'm sorry… I wish I could hold you."
"Maybe you can."
"What?"
"I'll talk to you tomorrow. I've got something to do."
"Babe, what are you-" Kelly hung up on him before he could finish.
That night, Maria leaned up against the balcony railing outside of their penthouse suite, looking out over Chicago. It's a beautiful city, she thought. Great people. The crowds are always good… why do I feel so bad? What we did to Eve isn't wrong. It's normal for people like us.
But who are people like us? Eve didn't do anything to deserve it, but I didn't try to stop Victoria… then again, Victoria's a powerhouse all of the time, I've only had to fight her when she was being a psycho once… that was awful… I can't imagine it with all of my teammates against me, too. How do the girls in the Diva's Army do it?
Maria let out a sigh and looked up at the stars, shining as brightly as they could through the city lights. She smiled, trying to count as many as she could to keep her mind off of everything.
"I just wish I could feel better about this…" she muttered, before hearing the balcony doors open.
"Maria. There you are-we've been looking for you. Thor's all ready, the popcorn's popped, we're just waiting on you. Come on, let's go." Lita turned around from where she'd been in the doorway to lead Maria back through the suite, and she let out a sigh, breathing in her last breath of Chicago air for the night before walking in and shutting the doors behind her.
I hope Eve's okay.
Eve felt herself come to consciousness before she opened her eyes, and tried to take in her room with them closed. She could feel the warmth of the window's open curtains on her right arm, and the cold on the back of her head from the cold compress, though they'd been pumping her full of drugs to keep the pain away, and keep down the swelling.
Outside, she could hear the nurses walking up and down the hallway, chatting, and could hear families. The door was closed, she thought, but it was always able to be heard. At least, it had been last night when she'd woken up being pushed through the hallway. The difference now was she could hear crying, clear, and loud.
Her eyelids fluttered open, and to her left, she spotted someone she didn't expect to see at her bedside. "Kelly?"
The blonde looked up to her best friend, eyes red and puffy from crying all night long-the moment she'd been allowed in to visit, she'd come in. "Eve… I'm so sorry, this is all my fault…" The tears continued to run as she stood up and threw her arms around her best friend, who hugged her back stiffly. "If I hadn't quit the Diva's Army that night, it would have been me facing DEAR out there, not you. I would've taken those hits, it would have been me laying in the bed there. You'd have been safe in the general manager's office. Damn me." She stood up and kicked her purse, where it had been on the floor, so that it skidded across the floor.
"Kelly… this isn't your fault…" Eve held out her hand to try to grab Kelly's. "I wouldn't wish that attack on anyone, especially not one of my best friends in the entire world. Last night, Kelly… Last night was the worst night of my life."
"I wish I could take it away from you, Eve… I don't care how much it hurt, how much I would have cried. I don't even care if I could never wrestle again… I'm so sorry, Eve."
"Stop saying that you're sorry…" Eve grabbed Kelly's hand, finally, and pulled her back as hard as she could manage to. "Please stop it. You know I love you, we're like family."
"I'll make this up to you, Eve… I promise. I swear it. I swear to you right now, that one day, I'll make everything that happened to you last night up to you. One day, Eve." Kelly squeezed Eve's hand and hugged her again, the tears still flowing.
"Kelly, please don't do anything stupid…"
"I'm a bimbo, Eve. Everything I do is stupid. Love you." Kelly smiled weakly through her tears and grabbed her purse to walk back out. "I'll visit again. I promise."
The RAW that was put out the night after the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, Alicia Fox had been asked to give the update on Eve, where Alicia was going to announce her condition. It was going to be an entire segment dedicated to Eve, but minutes before she was going to go on, Alicia told them she couldn't do it. Instead, they replaced her spot with something she didn't know about until the door to the Diva's locker room opened and everyone saw who was there.
"Do my eyes deceive me? Are you all organized on your own? I didn't have to beat you into it?"
"Beth!" Alicia gasped, jumping to her feet and running across to hug her old friend tightly. The other girls followed, including Natalya.
"It's nice to see you all, too… I missed you guys, every last one of you. Even the annoying ones, and I won't say your name specifically, AJ. I don't want to hurt your feelings." Beth winked at the dynamite girl, who laughed and nudged Kaitlyn.
"What are you doing here?"
"Let's just say I have some things to tell the WWE Universe. I'm just so proud of all of you." Beth smiled. "I mean… you've all stood up to DEAR, multiple times. I love all of you so much for that."
"Beth, you're gonna make Kaitlyn cry." AJ frowned, and everyone giggled while she dabbed her eyes. "I'm an emotional girl, alright?"
"We know, AJ. We know."
Later that night, her theme song graced an arena for the first time in over two months. The crowd went wild at the sight and sound of their Diva's Champion entering, and she waved, all smiles as she walked down to the ring. The Diva's Championship butterfly belt itself over her shoulder glittered and glinted beneath the lights, and she took a microphone once she got into the ring. The crowd chanted and continued just going on in general, until Beth finally interrupted them.
"On the 2nd of May... 78 days ago... I was attacked, live on RAW, by seven girls, who are now eight. Who are now called DEAR." The crowd booed, and Beth shrugged, smiling weakly as she waited for the silence. When she got it, she continued. "I was beaten in this ring so badly by women who still have not had the guts to tell me who they were, and I was given a concussion that was so bad, I was taken out of competition for the time being. Now, listen... I'd love to get my hands on the women who have screwed up my life for the past 78 days, and I would love to take them down, one by one, single-handedly, the way that I know I could if I got a chance." The crowd cheered then, and she laughed.
When they finally settled down again, Beth became more serious. "However great that would be... the doctors told me then, and they tell me now, that the concussion is so bad that they don't know when I'll be medically cleared to wrestle again. If I ever get cleared to wrestle again." Beth moved the title from her shoulder, kissing the butterfly belt and then holding it out in front of her, looking at it in her hand as she spoke. "Because I can't defend my title, I don't deserve to have it... and that's why I'm stepping down as the Diva's Champion."
The belt hit the mat and immediately, Beth shook her head, tears coming to her eyes and beginning to fall. "Thank you. Thank all of you, so much." She said through her tears, not into a microphone, before blowing a kiss and exiting the arena.
