A/N: Hello! Thank you again for all the follows, favorites, and reviews and please keep it up!
I also just realized this is the last chapter...
I hope it meets your expectations! And gives you lots of feels.
So on Monday Ferb got his mom to drop him off at the hospital. Phineas' bandages were finally gone, but he still had the IV and oxygen tubes and he was paler than normal. Ferb had to admit, it was strange to see his brother be still for so long. Normally, Phineas couldn't sit still for more than a few minutes unless it was really important. Ferb shrugged philosophically. He was about to do something he never thought he could. But for something important, for Phineas he could.
"Hi Phineas. You look better today. I'm glad your burns are finally healing, but you'll probably have some scars. I think you might find them cool though. Anyway, how's your back feeling? Does it hurt? Or can you not feel anything? The doctors say you'll have partial paralysis when you wake up, but I bet we can fix that. I just hope your head's ok; I mean, without that, life is a lot harder. I made some blueprints last night and I thought I would go over them with you. First, there's this..."
And so it continued. Throughout the entire visit, Ferb spoke about anything that came to his mind.
"Mom's out front, so I have to go Phineas. Stay alive until I come back. See ya."
Once in the car, Ferb slumped in his seat and let out a tremendous sigh. He was exhausted. He had never spoken that much... ever. But he was going to do it again tomorrow. His mom looked at him with worry written all over her face.
"Are you feeling alright Ferb?" Her son nodded.
"Just tired."
And so it continued. Every day that Ferb went to the hospital and just talked to Phineas. He had a surprisingly large amount of stuff to talk about; how their parents' business was going, what their friends were up to, Candace and Jeremy's dates, and the list went on. None of it really seemed to have any effect, so Ferb decided to up the ante. He brought in a white board and started talking through complex engineering problems, asking Phineas for advice about how to fix a certain problem a machine was having. Of course he received no reply, but it helped Ferb anyway. He brought in and designed blueprints, taping them around the room and even building a few small demos. The doctors were always curious and would peer in, to see what new invention Ferb had. And when it was time to go home, Ferb simply pressed a button and everything magically folded up into a three inch cube.
"Good night Phineas. Stay alive until I come back." And he would leave.
Three months this went on. School would be starting soon and Ferb was dreading the possibility of having to start junior high alone. Not to mention...
"Happy Birthday Phineas," Ferb said as he entered the room. His friends soon followed, bringing with them flowers and balloons, plus a small cake for them to share.
"Dude. You gotta wake up for your birthday," Buford said.
"Yes, the party won't be the same without you Phineas," Baljeet tried.
"Come on boys! Cheer up. He'll wake up when he's ready, but for now, we have cake," Isabella said, trying to stay chipper. They sang happy birthday to their unconscious friend and ate the cake in mildly awkward silence. Surprisingly, Ferb was the one to start the conversation, asking about what patches Isabella had been earning. They laughed and talked and enjoyed themselves until finally their parents came to pick them up.
"So long Ferb!" Baljeet called.
"See ya!" said Buford. Isabella gave Phineas a peck on the cheek and gave Ferb a hug.
"I had a great time Ferb. You're amazing for doing all of this." Once everyone was gone, he collapsed in the chair next to Phineas. The clock on the wall read three o'clock, telling him his mother wouldn't be here for at least another hour. He sighed.
"Are you in there Phineas?" he asked. "Because if you are, I need you to listen very closely.
"It's been three months. This is killing me inside Phineas. I'm fine with talking, it's not that. It's that it doesn't seem like it's helping. You don't respond to anything. I-I feel so lonely here. It doesn't matter if I'm surrounded by friends and family; I just can't shake this feeling. I feel like giving up," he admitted quietly. "School starts soon. You know what will happen. I'll look fine on the outside, collected, reserved, but it will be tearing me up on the inside. I honestly don't know if I'll be able to make it without you." Against his will, tears started to form and then spilled down his cheeks.
"Please Phineas," he begged. "I miss you. I love you. I need you to wake up. Please." He placed his head in his hands and just cried, and let the sorrow fight against the spark of hope that was somehow still alive.
"Ferb?"
His head shot up and the spark of hope flared. Phineas stared back at him and tried to sit up.
"Ferb! Where are our Zombie Apocalypse Plans?" he asked frantically. Ferb blinked in confusion.
"Calm down Phineas. There's no zombie apocalypse going on."
"Well then what is happening! Natural disaster, another Gnomeagedon, a meteor?"
"N-nothing like that at all is happening. Why do you ask?"
"Because you're crying. And if you're crying something terrible must have happened." Ferb was touched, but couldn't help the giggle, and then the full blown laugh from escaping. It was a relieved sort of laugh, full of joy and a weight being brushed away.
"Phineas, you were in a coma," explained Ferb when he had finally calmed down.
"Well that would explain why we're at the hospital. What happened?" Ferb quickly explained the accident and the possible repercussions.
"That would explain why I can't feel my legs," Phineas said nonchalantly, but Ferb knew him well enough to tell he wanted to freak out, and not much freaked his brother out.
"My head feels fine though," the red haired boy said, attempting to look on the bright side. "I don't remember anything after realizing I had connected the wrong wires on the machine, but that's normal I suppose."
"Do you remember anything from being in the coma?"
"Sorta. I vaguely remember hearing some voices… Did Isabella kiss me?" he asked, rubbing his cheek. Ferb smirked and nodded as he watched his brother blush.
"How much were you here? Because I remember hearing your voice a lot." Ferb nodded.
"I kept trying to come up with a way to make you wake up, but nothing seemed any good. Then Candace suggested I try something smaller. I came by everyday and just talked. Thought it might help," he finished with a shrug.
"Wow. Thanks bro. I remember there were some times when the voices seemed far away and I was tired and thought about… letting go. But then your voice was there and I kept reminding myself I couldn't and you told me to stay alive, and I think that helped." He smiled a little after that emotional reveal and then continued. "Um, I also remember you guys singing happy birthday I think. Then you were talking, but I can sorta remember the words." He looked at his brother knowing that they didn't need to be repeated. The two brothers leaned over and embraced.
"I'll always be there for you Ferb. I'll always wake up. I'll always be there when you need me." Ferb squeezed his brother.
"Thank you Phineas. And I'll always be there for you as well."
"I think you've already proven that," he said as he pulled away. Ferb smiled, then glanced at his phone.
"I suppose I should call mom and let her know you're awake."
"Yeah, and maybe the doctors would like to know too." They laughed and Ferb dialed the number. As he waited he said,
"It's good to have you back Phineas." The red haired boy smiled.
"It's good to be back."
A/N: Tada! Ok, so this is the end of what I have written; I could stop it here. Ooooorrrrr... I could continue and write about Phineas' rehab and all that stuff. Thoughts? Ideas? Let me know! And thank you so much for reading!
