A/N: Hello! First of all, a HUUUUUUUGE THANK YOU to The Amazing Cat for basically being the only reason that I'm updating (I promise I'll be better about it from now on, I just had to get going again). Second of all, apologies for taking so long to update. It's kinda short, but the next chapter is in progress. Enjoy!
He and Ferb were in the garage after a good, but long first day of school. Phineas was sitting in a chair near the workbench while Ferb was drawing up blueprints for his tricked out wheelchair.
"The weirdest thing happened today," Phineas said. "In robotics, the teacher was explaining this… thing with the wires… and I thought I knew the answer, like it was on the tip of my tongue the whole time, but nope, didn't know it. Weird huh?" Ferb nodded.
"We all forget things now and again," Ferb said. "What do you think of the teacher?"
They talked amiably until Ferb was done with the sketches then they started putting it together. Ferb handed Phineas some things to start attaching then moved on to the next bit.
Phineas took his tools in hand and was able to do the first two steps just from muscle memory until he stopped and realized he had no idea what he was doing.
"Uh, Ferb?" he asked sounding quite nervous. "What do I do next?" Ferb glanced over at his brother and saw him stuck on one of the easiest jobs there was.
Ferb, starting to feel a bit uneasy himself, walked him the through the next couple of steps.
"Got it?" he asked. Phineas nodded.
"Hand me the next piece."
Ferb did so and was about to get back to his own work when he saw Phineas staring at the rig, brow creased in concentration.
"Phineas?" he asked. "What's wrong?"
"I…" he stopped. "I don't know what I'm doing. None of this makes sense Ferb, none of it." He turned to look at his brother, fear evident in his eyes. "Didn't the doctors say there was the possibility of brain damage?"
:::::
It was a quiet afternoon in the hospital. The high ceiling and big windows gave it a nice open feeling. A tv chattered somewhere across the room. A nurse came through a door.
"Phineas Flynn?" the nurse called. "Your scans are ready." Phineas, Ferb, and Lawrence followed the nurse down a hallway and into a room where the doctor was waiting.
"So what seems to be the problem Doc?" their father asked.
"Well, the results are surprisingly good," the doctor said, pulling the MRI scans up on the screen. "This part here is the motor cortex," he said, pointing to a region in the middle of the brain. "It deals with learned skills such as reading, talking, and in your case, engineering. As far as the scans show, this was the only part that was damaged, and even then only slightly. Quite honestly, it's amazing that you didn't lose any other procedural skills."
"But will I be able to get them back?" Phineas asked urgently.
"Probably not in the way you're thinking," the doctor said, "but yes. It won't come back all at once and suddenly you'll be able to do it again; you'll have to relearn it."
Ferb glanced at his brother to see how he was taking it and saw Phineas nodding, disappointed, but with determination in his eyes.
"I can do that. We can do that, right Ferb?" He asked looking to his brother for support. Ferb placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Definitely."
::::
The second day of school was much like the first and it didn't take long for them to get into a routine. Ferb tried out for the soccer team, Isabella wanted to run for student body officer, Baljeet was part of the academic decathlon team, and Buford's wrestling season had started. With how much work they all had, the group of friends didn't see each other as much as they used to.
Phineas was busy too. In every free moment that he had, he was studying, practicing, trying to relearn the skills he had lost. And it was hard. It wasn't coming easy to him like he had hoped it would. Ferb tutored him when he had time, but between school, sports, and family, it was hard.
Ferb glanced at the clock in their room. 11:15. Whoops. He hadn't meant to stay up that late. Putting his book down, he reached over to turn on the light when he realized that Phineas wasn't in his bed. Looking around, he found his brother passed out over some robotics homework at their desk. He climbed out of bed and nudged his brother awake.
"Phineas?"
"Five more minutes…" he mumbled.
"Phineas. Let's get you into bed."
"Hrm…." he groaned, but allowed his brother to help him up and over to his bed.
"Thanks. G'night…" he mumbled before completely falling asleep. Ferb smirked.
"Night."
A/N: Gah, I know it's short, but better than nothing, right? (right?) In any case, hope you liked it!
TheAmazingCat: You truly are amazing! Thanks for checking in to see if I was gonna update soon. I hope you have an amazing day!
Guest: Clarence is their dad, but I got the name wrong! His name is actually Lawrence.
(Other) Guest: Thank you! Hope you enjoyed it! Like I said, more soon.
Dreadwing216: Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! And while there wasn't Phinebella in this chapter, there will definitely be some in the next one!
Thanks everybody! You're all wonderful people! Stay tuned!
