My daughter laid peacefully on my stomach. She was cooing as i played with her little fingers. Usagi had left to go pick up izuru and aiko and i was left alone with chiyo. As of right now, these moments with chiyo washed away any doubts and insecurities that i had before. For the first time in awhile i was purely happy, but i knew that today could bring bad news. I knew that this happiness wasn't going to last but a few more minutes.
The eye doctor was coming today, and we were finally going to find out what was wrong with chiyo's eyes.
I sighed loudly and patted chiyo's head.
"Looks like today's the day little bunny. New and exciting things around every corner, right? First your taken off of the machine, next thing you know, a doctor is prodding at your eyes. But you know, it isn't all bad. Soon enough, papa and daddy will get to bring you home."
Chiyo cooed again and started to crawl up to my chest. Her mouth was dragging along my torso as if she was looking for something.
I sighed.
"Chiyo are you ignoring me? Just interested in food i see. Here, let me help you."
I brought chiyo to my chest and let her latch on. She stayed there contently as i rubbed her back.
I usually don't breastfeed, even though my body is capable of it. It just seems so weird to do so. But something about chiyo makes it feel like a natural thing. Perhaps feeding her like this makes me feel more of a connection with her? I guess it is a little better than pumping...at the moment. After all, she doesn't have teeth. At the very least i can keep her close to me because of this, so i guess i can put up with it.
I smiled and watched her feed. She was so happy right now and i was in bliss.
I looked up to the clock. It was already 2:30PM. Usagi was probably on his way back to the hospital with the kids, if not already here.
I looked to the door. I listened for the sound of little feet followed by heavy steps. I could hear the nurses scurry around and the proud steps of doctors, but not the identifying sound of my family coming to greet me. Maybe they're still on their way?
Then i heard them coming down the hall. Four little feet running fast and two heavy steps behind them. I sat up and cradled chiyo in my arms so she could continue eating. Izuru came running in with aiko in tow.
"Hey boys, how was school?"
The boys crawled up on the bed and hugged me tight before sitting cross-legged on the end of the bed. Usagi came in and took a seat next to me. He saw that chiyo was eating and smiled at me.
"This is a first misaki. Your actually letting her breastfeed?"
I blushed at the comment.
" she really wanted to,That's all."
Usagi gave a knowing smile and i looked back to the boys.
"so , tell me what happened at school today?"
"Daddy! So today, mrs. kiko let us paint and me and aiko played tag outside!"
I smiled. Aiko cut in.
"A girl in our class got in trouble for ruining me and izurus paintings. She had to sit in the naughty chair for 10 whole minutes! Serves her right!"
This concerned me.
"She ruined your paintings? Why?"
Izuru and aiko looked to each other. They looked kind of sad.
"She says that she hates us, cuz were weird. That izuru having two papas is gross. But she doesn't even have a dad so how would she know? She's just a bully, right izuru?"
Izuru nodded his head vigorously.
"She's mean…"
I frowned.
"She isn't harming you is she?"
Izuru and aiko shook their heads.
"No daddy. She's scared of aiko cuz he will get her in trouble if she does anything bad to us."
I smiled at aiko.
"Thank you aiko, your taking good care of izuru aren't you?"
Aiko nodded.
"Of course. I love him."
I giggled and nodded.
"I know."
Things went quiet for a moment before a knock sounded at my door.
"Mr. usami, its from ophthalmology, may i come in?"
"Yes, please do."
The doctor walked in. he seemed a little surprised to see my whole family in the room. He cleared his throat and greeted everyone.
"Hello, my name is dr. mizuki and i'll be performing ms. chiyo's eye exam."
Usagi nodded and the doctor looked to me and chiyo.
"Is she breastfeeding at the moment ?"
I nodded my head.
"Yes she is, is that going to interfere with the exam?"
The doctor shook his head.
"No, this is perfect. She's relaxed right now. As long as i have your permission to look up close, this exam should go smoothly."
This was a little embarrassing, but if it was for chiyo i would do anything. I looked to usagi. He didn't look thrilled that this doctor was going to get up close and personal with his lover and daughter, but behind that unwilling gaze, i saw understanding that this had to be done.
I nodded to the doctor.
"That's fine. Are you willing to start with the left eye? I can flip her to the other side after."
The doctor nodded.
"Of course."
As chiyo continued to feed, the doctor started touching her eye. Her eye twitched and he wrote something down before running his finger along the crease of her eyelids. He then attempted to opened her eyes. There was obvious tension between the lids and her eyes did not open. The doctor hummed and wrote something down. The doctor the pinched her top lid with his gloved fingers and pulled outward. He almost laid his head on my chest trying to look under the lid. He wrote something down and looked to me.
" both eyes haven't opened correct?"
I nodded.
"Let me see the other one please."
I flipped chiyo to my other breast so she could latch on to the other. Plain shot threw my chest as she did do. This one had probably been built up. I took a breath and nodded to the doctor.
The doctor did the same exam to the other eye, wrote something down and looked to me. Something in his eye said that something wasn't right. I knew right then that chiyo not opening her eyes yet was something abnormal. I gulped in suspense.
The doctor sighed.
"It's as i thought. Both eyes have the same problem."
"And what is that?"
"Both eyes have a flap of skin connecting her eyelids together. Its a problem that can easily be taken care of, however i won't know the extent of her ability to see until after the surgery. I believe there is a operation opening tonight at seven, are you willing to take this opening?"
My brain was running miles right now.
"How long will it take?"
The doctor smiled.
"This kind of procedure should only take 30 minutes to an hour at most. She will be back in your arms before you know it."
Usually someone would take there time and think about this kind of a decision. Maybe even consult with their significant other, but in this moment, despite all the thoughts in my head, one thought appeared the most.
"If it will help her, then i'll do it."
The doctor nodded.
"Then it's a deal. I'll set up the appointment."
With that the doctor left. I looked down to chiyo and smiled.
"Anything for you baby girl."
