My Life Would Suck Without You
Chapter 4

"Janessa Simms. This is Samantha Gray, Reid Garwin, and my brother Tyler Simms." Janessa told Chase as she pointed to each person.

Chase looked between Janessa and Tyler trying to figure out the relation between the two. They looked absolutely nothing alike at all. There was only one possibility that they could be related to each other. He figured that Janessa had to be adopted or maybe Tyler was the one who was adopted. He would have to ask about that later on. "It's nice to meet you guys." He said to them as they all nodded.

Caleb looked over at the group. He noticed someone he had never seen before sitting next to Janessa. He wondered who he was. Maybe he was a new student like Sarah. The more he thought about it the more he realized that the person had to be a new student. There was no way that he wouldn't have known who that person was. He was definitely a transfer student or a new student at that. Looking at Pogue, Caleb asked, "Do you know who that guy is?"

"I've never seen him before. I think he's new." Pogue responded also looking at the new guy.

Before Caleb could say anything to Pogue, their Professor walked into the room. Throughout the whole class period, he kept a close eye on Janessa and the new guy. Janessa shared her textbook with the new guy and she seemed to be answering all the questions that he had for her. Once class had ended, Caleb was eager to figure out who the new guy was. Quickly packing up his belongings, he made his way towards the rest of the gang. Samantha and Janessa were walking in front of Reid and Tyler. Both groups having their own conversations, while Janessa turned to Samantha to give her a quick hug before saying, "See you in Math class. Have fun with Pogue in Chemistry."

"Thanks! Have fun on your break!" Samantha said as she and Pogue headed off to their next class.

"See you guys later. I'm gonna go do homework in the library." Janessa stated.

"On the first day? Nessie, you're turning into a nerd." Reid joked.

"I've always been a nerd thank you very much. And at least one of us gets our homework done." She retorted as Tyler and Caleb laughed.

"Come on, dude. Let's get to class. Meet us for lunch, Nessie." Tyler said.

"We better see you there at lunch, baby girl." Reid said as the duo walked away.

Janessa headed for the library not realizing that Caleb had been following her. Entering the library, she jumped when she heard him say, "You really are gonna study?" Turning to look at him, she caught her breath before replying, "Jesus Caleb, don't do that. And yes I do plan on studying or more so doing homework. Don't you have class?"

"Actually I have a break period right now." Caleb said.

"And you decided to spend it in the library? Little unusual for you isn't it?" She asked as she walked towards a table in the far back part of the library.

"Well I wanted to talk to you about something." Caleb said following her.

"Ummm okay. What's up?" She asked as they both took a seat.

"That guy you were talking to in class who is he?" He asked as she pulled her books out.

"His name is Chase Collins. Why do you care?" She asked grabbing her planner.

"Cause I've never seen him around before." He replied.

"He's a new student." Janessa said looking at him.

"Interesting. So why Spenser Academy?" He questioned.

"I don't know, Caleb maybe for a good education. What's with all the questions about him?" She asked.

"I'm just curious." He responded.

"If you say so." She said as she began to write done things for her to accomplish.

"Can I ask you something else?" He asked as Janessa looked up from her planner.

"Hmm?" She replied.

"What do you think of Sarah?" He asked.

Janessa looked down at her planner before muttering, "She seems nice. Why are you asking?"

"You think it's weird if I ask her out on a date since we just met?" He asked.

Janessa looked at him in shock. Of course it was weird for him to ask Sarah out. He knew nothing about her yet he wanted to take her out on a date. Was he stupid? But Janessa doubted that. This was Caleb she had to remind herself. Perfect child, makes no mistakes at all. Always follows and does what he's told to do. He would never make a mistake like this. He always knew what to do. "Caleb, you seriously cannot be asking that questions right now." She said.

"Why not? I just want your opinion on if it's a good thing to do." He said.

"For crying out loud Caleb, you just met the girl what yesterday and now you wanna ask her out on a date?" Janessa questioned a little irritated with him.

"Hey I was just asking. No need to get defensive." Caleb said.

"I'm not being defensive. Why do you even care for my opinion? I'm not your mom nor am I your sister." She said as Caleb looked at her.

He had always considered her his little sister since the day that she had been brought into their family. She had always been there for him when he needed advice and she was never one to really give her opinion until she knew that it was needed. She was a great listener and that's why Caleb liked talking to her. But because his parents chose not to have any other kids, he often times wondered what it would be like to have younger siblings. But he had gotten that when he had met Pogue, Reid, and Tyler. The one thing that he really wanted to experience though was having a younger sister. It was easy to get along with boys but he wanted to understand the feeling of having to be a protective older brother. And though that would always be Tyler's role in Janessa's life, it didn't mean that neither Caleb nor Reid or Pogue could also be protective of her as well.

"I care for your opinion because I see you as my little sister, Nessie. And your opinion means a lot to me." He told her as he watched her face soften a little.

"Look Caleb, it's your life. You do what you want to do. If you want to ask her out then ask her out. I can't tell you what to do with your life." She told him opening up her textbook.

"You're right. Forget I asked." Caleb said not wanting to bother her anymore.

Getting up from his seat, he left Janessa alone to do her work. Once he was out of sight, she let out a sigh of relief. She hadn't meant to sound irritated or angry with him, she merely didn't want to give him any impressions that she had feelings for him. With what he had just said about caring for her opinion because he saw her as a little sister, she knew that any sort of idea that anything could happen between them would never happen. She knew that she shouldn't have expected anything to happen but she hoped that her time away from them would have at least made him miss her more or at least changed his feelings towards her. Shaking her head, she looked back down at her textbook and began to read the chapter they were intstructed to read in the syllabus.

Lunch…

Later on in the afternoon, the whole group had met each other in the cafeteria. Well it was everyone but Janessa. Tyler looked over at Reid in concern before saying, "Maybe she's running late."

"I'd like to hope she's running late." Reid told him as Caleb came to sit at the table.

"Have you seen Nessie, Caleb?" Pogue asked as he and Samantha looked at him.

"Not since our free period. Why what's going on?" Caleb asked.

"Nothing we were just wondering where she was since she isn't here right now." Tyler said.

Janessa stood outside of the cafeteria doors debating between wanting to run away or going inside. She had always been used to skipping lunch since her freshmen year at Spencer Academy. She didn't know why it started or how it started. Actually she did know why she did it. It was because of Kira. Kira had taunted Janessa and made fun of her. Telling her that Caleb would never like a girl like her because she didn't look like Caleb's type at all. Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open and looked around for her brother and the rest of the boys. Walking over to their table, she sat beside her brother as he looked at her before saying, "What took you so long?"

"Sorry, I left something in my locker so I went to get it." She lied as she looked down at her lap.

Tyler gave his sister a weird look before pushing his plate of food that he had saved for her in front of her. She looked down at the food and felt all of their eyes staring at her. Picking up the extra fork that Tyler had placed on the tray, she picked at the vegetables before slowly taking a bite into them. Tyler gave her a light nudge to encourage her to keep eating. Within a few minutes, the plate was almost completely empty with only a few pieces of chicken left on the plate. "Come on only a few more pieces, Nessie." He told her as she shook her head, "All right."

Janessa looked down at her plate and noticed Caleb staring at her as if he was about to say something to her. Looking away from him, she prayed that the bell would ring so that she could just get out of this awkward place. And thankfully just as she was thinking that, the bell signaled the end of lunch. Janessa got up quickly before rushing out of the cafeteria room and hurried to her next class.
