My Life Would Suck Without You
Chapter 5
Janessa had never been so excited to finally be out of school. It was definitely a weird first day of school for her and she was just glad to be home. She walked into the kitchen to find a note on the fridge being held by a magnet. Walking over to the fridge, she read:
Dad and I went to the store to buy some groceries. Be back in a little bit.
Mom
She couldn't help but smile. It may have been a little note but Janessa was definitely thankful that even the littlest of notes could make her feel much better about her day. She loved her parents so much and she adored them. Even when they did choose to get on her nerves but she knew that they only wanted what was best for her. Grabbing an apple from the fruit basket on the kitchen counter, she decided to head to her room and finish up what homework she had left to do before carrying on with her chores. Turning on her TV, she decided to watch A Walk To Remember while doing homework on her bed. Pulling out her books, notebooks, and planner, she pulled the assignment that she wanted to work on first closer to her.
She began to work on her math assignment making the attempt to want to cross that off of her to-do list. It was to her one of the subjects that she could easily cross off of her list. Looking over her assignment, she was going to be dealing with a lot of trigonometry problems. Shaking her head, she walked back over to her desk to get her trigonometry cheat sheet before making her way back towards her bed. Sitting on her bed, she flipped her trigonometry book open to the page that she would be working on. Opening her notebook, she pulled a pencil out of her pencil case before she read her first problem.
Meanwhile, Tyler and Reid had decided to hang out at his home since they were pretty positive that there would be groceries in the house. So they were headed to his house after they had finished with swim practice. Stepping into the house, Tyler couldn't help but feel so happy to be home. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy living on campus it was merely just the fact that he hated being away from his parents and most especially now his sister. He hated to leave Janessa alone and by herself because for so long he had been used to protecting her. She was his little sister and she would always be. Shutting the front door, he noticed Janessa's shoes on the shoe rack. "Nessie's home." He told Reid.
"Most be doing homework, I assume?" Reid asked.
"Most likely. I wouldn't be surprised if she was honestly." He responded as they both headed towards the kitchen where they found the note his parents left, "Looks like there's actually no food here."
"Let's just get something at Nicky's then." Reid said.
"I guess that would be a good idea. Should we ask Nessie or the guys if they want to come with us?" Tyler asked.
"Yeah ask Nessie, she hasn't been out much since she's been back so it would be nice to catch up with her. And I'll text the guys while you get Nessie." Reid said as Tyler nodded.
Headed for his sister's room, Tyler hoped that she would be down to go. This past summer had been one of the worst summers for him with Janessa being gone for so long. He had grown accustomed to her being there with him 24/7 and to only have the guys around was really hard. There was only so much time that he could spend with the guys and when he needed someone else to talk to, Janessa would be there to cheer him up. But this year she couldn't be there since she had gone to California. Knocking on her bedroom door, he could hear familiar voices coming from the room and he knew what movie she was watching. "Come in!" He heard her yell as he opened the door.
"Hey, Reid and I are going to Nicky's to grab something to eat. Wanna come join us? Reid's calling the guys to join us too." He said as she shifted positions on the bed so that she could stand up.
"I don't know, Ty. I've got a lot of homework to do…" She began to say as Tyler cut her off.
"And you've got plenty of time to do it. You haven't even been hanging out with us. I know Reid misses hanging out with you and I'm sure Pogue does too. Even Caleb." Tyler said as she sighed.
"Okay fine. Give me like five minutes to change." She said as Tyler hugged her.
"We'll be downstairs." Tyler said as he headed back downstairs to meet Reid.
Nicky's
Caleb and Pogue sat at a table waiting for the rest of the group to arrive. They heard Reid's voice and turned their heads towards the direction his voice was coming from. They noticed Reid and Tyler walking ahead but someone following closely behind them. Pogue and Caleb both smiled when they realized it was Janessa joining them. The guys shook hands while Janessa greeted both Pogue and Caleb. She took her seat between Reid and Tyler before taking a look around their usual hangout. Reid looked over at Tyler and Janessa before asking, "What do you guys want to eat?"
"Get me some hamburger and fries." Tyler said as he gave Reid money.
"I think I'm okay." Janessa said as Reid and Tyler both gave her a look.
"She'll just share with me." Tyler said as Reid nodded his head before heading to the bar area to order their food.
Janessa glared at her brother as he patted her knee before the guys began to catch up with each other. Janessa listened to them talk about the things that they had done that summer. Reminiscing about what they had done and talking about the endless possibilities of where they should have gone but before they could continue Reid had made his way back with their food. While the guys were eating their food, Janessa made sure to pick fries from both Reid and Tyler so that they would get off her case a little bit about not eating. Every now and then she would take a bite of Tyler's burger but to be honest with Caleb being around it was really hard to even think about eating. She was beginning to feel super self-conscious about eating. So she excused herself from the group saying she needed to use the bathroom. Walking towards the door, she stepped outside to grab some fresh air instead.
"You okay, baby girl?" She heard someone ask as she threw her hand over her chest, "Jesus Pogue, you don't have to scare a girl like that."
"Sorry just wanted to make sure you were okay since you didn't exactly walk in the direction of the bathroom." He said as he leaned against the same wall she was leaning on.
"Did my brother and Reid see me?" She asked as she shook his head, "Okay good."
"What's going on, baby girl? You've been distant from the rest of the group since you've gotten back. Did someone say something to you?" He asked.
"No." She said as she stared at the sky.
"Then what's going on?" He asked watching her.
"I don't know, Pogue. Just being away this summer really like changed me I guess." She said as he shook his head at her.
"I think you do you know what's wrong. You know that you can trust me. I've always been here for you and I always will be." He said as she looked at him.
"I've just been really focused on school that's it." She whispered.
"And it's affecting your eating habits? Or spending time with us like old times?" He asked as he reached for her hand.
"I just want him to stop seeing me as his little sister. I hate being stuck in this position, Pogue. I've been stuck in this little sister spot since I was born. And trust me it's amazing to know that I've got four big brothers willing to take care of me but I just want him to want me the same way I want him. The same way I've wanted him since I was a little girl. But I can't because he even admitted that he only saw me as a little sister. That's all I'll ever be to him. Kira was right about that. It's probably the way I look. Since Sara's gotten here that's all he's cared about and I just feel like I'm becoming so self-conscious about myself." She said feeling her eyes water.
