Chapter 4

The sound of thunder rumbling overhead woke Alana from her sleep.

"Mummy?" a small voice called out. A loud thunder clap reigned over head and two arms wrapped around Alana.

"No sweetheart, it's Lana." She replied, looking over at the blonde sleeping peacefully. "Go back to sleep," Sophie hid her face against Alana's stomach and closed her eyes. Her heart pounded rapidly against her chest. Alana took a deep breath trying to relax. Alana knew Donna is an amazing woman and she has deep feelings for her, but how could she do this to a sweet innocent girl. Sophie need a father not two gay mothers. Alana reached over and lightly placed a kiss on Donna's forehead. Alana carefully rolled Sophie over so she was resting against her mother.

"Uh," the blonde groaned sleepily.

"Sophie woke because of the storm," Alana replied.

"It's alright sweetheart." Donna cooed, pulling her daughter closer. Donna winked at Alana before closing her eyes. Alana faintly smiled back and snuggled back under the covers.

Alana tossed and turned for the next few hours, unable to fall back asleep. She covered her face with her hands. There was only one choice left to ensure Sophie has a normal childhood. Even if that meant breaking her own heart. Alana pushed back the sheets and silently crept downstairs.

Donna opened an eye as the sun shining brightly into the room. She lifted her head and noticed it was only Sophie and herself alone in the room. Half awake, Donna rose to her feet and got changed. Slowly walking down the stairs, she looked around and also found the rooms empty. 'Maybe she went back to her room,' Donna mused as she turned on the kettle. Donna settled on a kitchen bench stool and noticed an envelope with her name written neatly on the front. Reaching across, Donna pulled it closer towards her. With shaky hands, she opened the envelope and pulled the piece of paper out.

My dearest Donna,

Spending time with you and Sophie on this island has been the greatest time of my life. You are the most amazing woman I've ever met.

You value family above all else, which I admire the most about you. I like you, quite a bit actually; in fact I'd go as far as to say I'm in love with you. And that's the problem. I know this is going to be hard for you to understand, though I hope you will one day. It seems unfair on Sophie not to have a normal life. She needs a father, not another mother.

Society understands homosexual relationships but kids can be cruel. I wouldn't want Sophie to be the pinpoint of that teasing.

This is the hardest thing I've ever done. I don't expect you to be thrilled over my decision to leave, but I believe I am doing the right thing for you and Sophie.

I won't ever forget you or my time with you.

Your Lana,

Xx

Donna didn't hear the kettle screech to boiling point as re-read the letter again. The blonde only looked up when she heard the small feet on the stairs.

"Mummy?" her daughter, called quietly rubbing her eyes.

"Eggs for breakfast?" Donna asked, slipping the letter into her pocket. Donna quietly and quickly cooked the eggs, trying to act as normal as possible for her daughters sake.

"Where's Alana?" Sophie asked, looking around.

"She had a family emergency and had to leave quite early this morning," Donna said, hiding the truth.

"When will she be back?" the six year old questioned.

"I don't know sweetheart," Donna paused, bringing across the plate of scrambled eggs. "Eat up while it's still warm," she said before returning to the kitchen.
