When Mr. Wyatt asked him, "Do you want to go into the family business, Sam?" his younger self could only stand there and stare at him, perplexed.

"No one's ever asked me that before," he finally replied with a frown.

It hadn't seemed to matter whether he wanted to go into the family business or not back then. Dad hadn't cared if he wanted to go to college, get married, settle down in one place, become a lawyer or a doctor or raise a family. The thing that killed Mom was all that mattered to Dad.

That and ridding the world of every monster under the sun.

Now? Now Sam knew it did matter. It mattered a whole lot. It tore Dad apart to take away our choices, he realized as he sat against the wheel of the school bus. He didn't want to make us hunters.

No, he needed to make them hunters. It was his Dad's way of ensuring no other kids ended up going through what they did. No other families would end up torn apart. No other family would be left wondering what happened or why.

Did he want to go into the family business?

No.

Did he need to go into the family business?

Yes.

Because people like Dirk McGregor only found some sorta peace after Dean burned the remains tethering him to this existence.

And that made his lack of choice worth it in the end.

A/N: Hello, all! I hope this finds you well!
