Chapter 77:
Rainy Days
...
...
Rain...
It was an uncommon weather within the Dark Land, but it was still very much appreciated. So when a sudden shower of rain started pouring down one day around mid afternoon, most people had ventured outside to enjoy it. Unfortunately for them, it only lasted for about an hour before the clouds parted away and sunlight peaked through them.
SPLASH!
Junior jumped into a relatively large puddle in the courtyard. Splashing around with him were Lemmy and Larry. The three were competing to see who can make the biggest splash.
"Was it just raining?" Luigi asked as he stepped inside the courtyard. The ground was wet and the air felt much cooler than normal.
"Yup, and you missed it." Junior said as he jumped in a nearby puddle, splashing Luigi in the process.
The plumber covered himself to avoid getting too wet. "I didn't know if it could rain here with all the lava around,"
"Dark Land rarely sees rain, and when we do get it, it usually last for a few hours." Ludwig appeared beside him. "That's why we have come up with ways to provide more seasonal rain."
"Really?" Luigi asked curiously. "Like what?"
"Well, Magikoopa who specialize in weather magic. However, they're not very common and usually work around cities. Cloud Farms are our primary source for rain."
"Cloud farms? You mean you actually have domestic clouds?"
"Well, yeah...how else does Lakitus get their clouds?"
"I don't know...a Cloud Shop?" He guessed.
"And where do you think the Cloud Shop get their clouds?"
"...Good point,"
"Lakitu Clouds are completely domestic; however, Weather Clouds are still a bit wild and not meant to be ride on. In fact, there are some right now,"
Luigi followed the direction Ludwig was pointing at. Narrowing his eyes a bit, he was about to spot some movement among the clouds. In the sky, there were two Lakitus ridding their clouds. With them, were several other clouds, larger than their own and grey in color. The two Lakitus were trying to herd them all above the town, as the normal clouds started blocking up the sun again.
"They probably what caused the rain shower earlier," Ludwig said. "They should be moving on; if they're still hanging around then we must be schedule for more rain."
"I gotta admit, it's pretty cool how you're about to raise your own clouds and control your own weather."
Ludwig shrugged "More or less; with rain appearing only several times a year, we had to figure out some way to bring in more water."
Luigi nodded. "That makes sense,"
SPLASH!
"Larry" Ludwig hissed. The lighter blue Koopa paused and turned to him.
"What? You're standing next to a water puddle; you're going to get wet," He said.
Ludwig growled before a smirk appeared on his lips. "Fine,"
He jumped and splashed both him and Lemmy. "There, happy?"
"Not quite," Larry said.
He shared a glance at Lemmy who nodded in agreement. The two jump and splash Ludwig at the same time. The older Koopa wiped the water from his brow and growled as the two laughed.
They stopped when Junior came over and got them all wet, laughing at their misfortune. As the four played around in the puddles, Luigi took this time to leave. As much as he would love to join them (not really), he had some place to be.

...
Mrs. Kitava sips her drink from her seat next to the open window. The rain had stopped a short while ago but judging from the clouds, she suspects it to pick up again later in the day. The cool, misty air felt good against her tan skin. It was even better to enjoy it in the comfort of her home.
It was only been a day since she got out of the hospital. Kendall has been keeping a close eye on her, hovering around like a mother bird with her newly hatched chicks. Her efforts were greatly appreciated; however, it was getting annoying pretty fast.
She sighed; the festival was a good four days away and there was still much to do around shop. She rather be cleaning with the others than to sit here and rest, unfortunately she has to follow doctor's orders.
She sips from her cup again and glances outside. There were some children outside, laughing and splashing in wet puddles that had formed. She smiles softly; she remembering how her own grandchildren played as such.
She sighed and continued to stare out the window. An odd figure drew her attention. Her interest increases as she watches that figure stop in front of her home.
Curious, she put her cup down on the table and stood up from her chair as she made her way downstairs. Kendall was already there to greet the figure when she got there. Upon seeing him, she quickly realized the figure to be Luigi.
"Well hello, Luigi," Kendall greeted the green man as he enters inside.
"Hello, Mrs. Kendall; how are things with Mrs. Kitava?" He asked.
"Very well, thank you for asking. Although, I don't think Kitava likes me hovering over her so much. She always preferred to do things on her own, you know?"
"I'm sure she still appreciated everything that you've done for her."
"I guess you're right," She said in wonder.
"Mail Call!"
Both Luigi and Kendall look up in the air to see a white cloud descending upon them. It was soon revealed to be the local postal Lakitu.
Lakitus and Parakoopas were the two primary delivery carriers around the Dark Lands. The Parakoopas flight abilities and the Lakitus' clouds allowed them to cover greater distances than compared to those traveling on land.
This Lakitu was a female, dressed in a rain coat and hat with the postal logo printed on it. She bids them both a "good day" as she hands Kendall the mail.
"Why, Lakarrie… you're usually quite speedy when it comes to delivering mail; why so late?" Kendall asked.
"Well," The postal Lakitu began. "A fellow employee started feeling sick during her route so I had to take over for her."
"Oh, I see; well, I hope you're not working too hard."
"It's no problem. I am, after all, the fastest mail carrier in town." She boosted. "I'll have all these delivered in another 1.35 hours."
"Well, if anyone can do it, I'm sure it will be you."
As Kendall talked with mail carrier Lakarrie, Luigi stepped further inside the store. He hung his coat by the door to dry out for a bit. He turned around and quickly spotted Kitava standing by the stairway.
He smiled and saluted to her in greeting. It's only been about 24 hours since he last saw her yesterday. Under the request of the Doctor, he promised to check in on Kitava daily to ensure she was doing well after that incident.
...
"Mr. Luigi, a moment please?"
The green man paused and turned around. It was starting to get late and after making sure Kitava was going to be alright, he started to make his way back home when the doctor called him out.
"What does it Doctor?"He asked her as she stood in front of him.
"If you don't mind me asking," She asked. "How long have you known Mrs. Kitava?"
"Not long, only a few weeks. Why?"
"I have a request to ask of you… Well, actually more like a favor."
A curious brow was raised. "Okay…what is it?"
"I was wondering if you could regularly check in on Kitava, at least for a week or so."
"What…Me?" He blinked. "But… what about Mrs. Kendall? I'm sure she'll be more than happy to look after her. Or perhaps, a family member?"
"Mrs. Kendall is nice; however, I prefer not to put too much on her plate as is. As for family members, Mrs. Kitava is no longer in contact with them."
"How come?"
"I'm not sure, but from what I have gathered she hadn't seen them in over ten years. This is why I was hoping to turn on for this."
"I see…" Luigi thought. "Well, I…"
'No,' Mr. L interrupted him.
"I…Uhm…"
'Noo~,'
"Uhm…Can I have a moment?"
The Doctor nodded. "Of course… please, take your time to consider,"
The Doctor left the plumber in the hall to consider on her offer. Luigi walked towards a seat and sat down.
"L," He spoke softly.
'You can't do it,'
Luigi raised a brow. "And why not?"
'Because, you don't have the time,'
"Well, says who?"
'Says Wendy, Kamek, Kammy, Wendy, the Piranha Plants, Wendy and whatever else you spend your time on,'
"You said Wendy three times…"
'The wife tends to take a lot of time,'
"Ok, I get it, I am busy" He mumbled as a nurse walk by.
'More like you're always occupied with one thing or another,'
"Still…Mrs. Kitava doesn't have anyone else. And I do consider her a friend if any,"
'So…'
"So... I'll have to figure out some way around it but I can afford some time to visit her.
'Are you sure?'
"Yes, I'm sure. Besides, it's only for a week or so,"
'If you say so,'
...
Kitava raised an eyebrow when the plumber saluted to her in greeting. She knew that the green man was visiting for her wellbeing but decided not to say (or sign) anything against it. His visits weren't very long; an hour or two at most. Plus he helps around with the cleaning which was very much needed right now. She watched as he approached her and tries to speak with her.
"/How are you?/" He asked her in sign language.
Kitava smiled to herself. It seems like Luigi was trying to learn some sign language. This was good; communication between them will be easier and they won't need to rely on Kendall to translate.
/I'm fine, and you?/ She reply back slowly so he can see what she was doing. It takes years to learn sign language and become a fluent signer. She doesn't really see herself having a proper 'conversation' with him in the future; however, he could at the very least learn some of the basics.
Luigi paused for a second in thought. Slowly, he tried to reply.
"/I'm... alright, thank you/"
Kitava chuckled. His signing was... rusty, but that was expected for a beginner. Nevertheless, he still did pretty well; he just needed practice and some proper guidance.
Luigi was really glad Mrs. Kendall was kind enough to supply him with the book she used to learn sign language. That way he could talk to Kitava about simple things without the need of a translator.
She waved him over to come closer which he did. She signaled him to keep his eyes on her before she repeated what he just signed. At first he was confused before he realize what she was doing – she was correcting his mistake.
Some words have multiple phases that may have similar or different meaning so it was tricky trying to remember how and which one to use properly. In this case, he had his hand balled together in a fist when he signed the word 'alright'; it was supposed to be flat. He repeated what he signed, this time correcting his mistake. Kitava smiled and nodded in approval.

...
Luigi's visit lasted for a little over two hours before he announced his leave. By the time he made it back to the castle, the rain had picked up again, bringing in a light shower.
"Well, at least I don't need to worry about watering the plants,"
'Among other things,'
"Still, the cool air is nice change compared to dry, humidity,"
'You're complaining about it before,'
"True… I guess I got use to it."
"Are you talking to yourself?"
The green man paused and turned towards the side. He was passing through the courtyard again. Junior and others were long gone but now Wendy was there, sitting on a bench not far away from him.
"M-Maybe…"
The pink Koopa raised a curious brow before chuckling to her. "You're weird,"
'Well, that's not untrue,'
Luigi didn't response to that statement; mainly because they were right. He did have a voice talking inside his head after all. So instead, he voiced his concern.
"Shouldn't you get out of the rain? You'll catch a cold."
Wendy smirked. "It'll take a lot more than a little rain shower to get me sick," She closed her eyes and leaned back on the bench. "And like you say, it's nice out here,"
She pats the open space next to her "Come…join me,"
Luigi tilts his head slightly. "I'll get wet,"
"Yes, you will,"
Shrugging nonchalantly, he walks across the courtyard to where Wendy was and sat down next to her. Her eyes were closed and she seemed rather relaxed. Deciding to do the same, he leaned back against the bench and extended his head back towards the sky.
The sky was dark, with large pillows of gravel-gray clouds slowly moving pass the castle. There weren't any sign of the yellow coloring of the sun, so it'll be a while before the downpour clears up. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath and let out a sigh, his body instantly starting to relax.
Rain poured down on him in small, thin streams; sliding down his face, over his chin, and down his neck before finally being absorbed into his shirt. It dripped from the tips of his hair and mustache, and slowly began to soak his clothes. He sat there for a while, already captivate to the feel of the rain gently cascading down from the sky. He welcomed it with open arms, simply enjoying the sensations it brought him.
"So...did you went to see that old koopa again?"
"Hmm?" Wendy's voice broke him out of whatever trance he was in. He opened his eyes halfway and glanced to his side. It took him a slow moment for him to realize that she was looking at him, leaning mostly on her side. It took him another moment before he could answer her question. "Oh, yeah, I did,"
"How is she?"
"Fine," He replies, closing his eyes again. "A little restless since she can't do anything at the moment, but fine,"
There was a short silence between them. Luigi opened one eye to glance at the Koopa next to him. "What?"
Wendy shifted a bit and rest her head on her right arm. "Don't you think it's a little strange for you to visit an elderly who isn't related to you and you know almost nothing about them?"
The green man closed his eye to think about it in silent. "Yeah, it does seem a little bizarre. But then again..." He smirked, a glimmer of mischievous in his eyes. "I am weird after all, aren't I?"
Wendy raised a small brow before smirking as well. "Yes, you are,"
She stood up from the bench and stretched. "Alright, I've been outside long enough. You should probably shower before you catch a cold,"
Luigi nodded in agreement before standing as well. The two headed for their room. Once they were inside, Luigi started removing his wet coat while Wendy shut the door behind her.
"Okay, who gets to shower first?" He asked, turning his body towards her.
He only had a mere second of surprise before he suddenly tackled. He grunted when he hit the ground and felt a familiar weight on top of him. Fortunately for him, he knew very well what to do.
Wendy smirked as she tackles Luigi to the ground. Unfortunately for her, her surprise attack only lasted for at least two to three seconds before the tables were turned on her…literally. She blinked a few times before realizing she was the one on the ground and her once victim was grinning on top of her.
"You'll have to move faster than that," The green man smirked.
"Oh yeah?" She pouts before smirking herself. "Well, I'm not done yet,"
She wrapped her legs around the plumber's waist and forced him back down harshly. Luigi groans when he hit the ground and felt her moving on top of him.
'Come on,' Mr. L said. 'You can't let her win that easily'
'I won't,' Luigi growled '...at least, not with this.'
Wendy only manages to get up halfway when he yanked her down, causing half her body to fall on top of him. Luigi used his body weight to flip them over again. He quickly seized her wrists as he tries to restrain her.
"You're... gonna have to try... harder than that," He grunted as he struggles to pin her down. It wasn't easy; Wendy was physically stronger than him, something he really wasn't ashamed to admit. In fact, it wasn't all too surprising that she managed to flip their position again.
But Luigi was strong as well; he had to be otherwise all those months he spent training would have been for nothing. With some more effort than Wendy, he manages to regain his position over her.
Their tussle dragged on for a while and Luigi felt water sliding down his brow. Whether it was rainwater or sweat, he couldn't tell nor did he cared. All he did care about was maintaining his (temporary) dominate position for as long as possible.
Wendy growled in frustration but that didn't stop the amusing grin forming on her pink lips. She enjoys wrestling with Luigi. First time they did this was to settle a little argument they had a while back, which she win by the way. Now it was more for their own entertainment.
She especially likes to watch the plumber as he tries to dominate her, wrestling or not. She wasn't sure if he was aware of this or not, but whenever he was really focus on the task at hand, his bright blue eyes turn into a grayish-blue, almost silver in color. It was interesting yet captivating.
Deciding she had taken the 'bottom' position long enough, she rolled them over for what may be the twentieth time. Almost just as fast, she find herself right back on the bottom. Shell – sometimes she forget how strong he has gotten.
Their little match continues for a few minutes longer. After that, Luigi decided that he had enough. He let Wendy topped over him and pinned him down completely.
"Ok," He pants. "I give,"
Panting as well, Wendy grinned in triumph. The green man had fought fiercely but in the end, he had lost. The score was now 4 to 1, not that she was counting.
She released the man's wrists and sat up, taking the time to catch her breath as well. She eyed the man in between her thighs; radiating warm heat underneath her. Luigi didn't move; he simply lay there, panting openly with a steady rise and fall of his chest. He looked up at her, eyelids slightly lowered with the exertion of fighting.
After catching her wind, Wendy leaned forward and kissed him passionately. Luigi relaxed into it and kiss her back. After a moment, they parted.
"That was fun," She said. "...but we should really get in the shower now,"
Luigi can only nod in agreement.
