Chapter 31: Gendered
I greeted the new healer who was named Carves the Crystal. I introduced myself as Lives in the Stares and she got very excited. I also introduced Landon as my Brother saying my partner hadn't wanted to leave work but that he was very excited.
"Oh what does your partner do?" Healer Crystal asked.
"Construction." I said absently running my hands over my belly, "He actually is helping to build houses, we just moved into a new community up here in Utah."
"Oh you just moved up here? Where were you living before?" She asked showing us to the room.
"We just moved from Arizona." I said, "The heat was a little too much for me."
She nodded and once I got onto the table she started to ask me questions. Questions about my pregnancy, my body and about how I was feeling.
I did feel a little odd taking about some things in front of Landon but when we started talking about more intimate topics he excused himself to use the restroom.
When he came back he left again so the healer could do a somewhat invasive physical exam. But he came back when she did the ultrasound.
"Everything from the exam looks good." She informed him as he walked in and she put the jelly on my stomach.
"Good." He mumbled coming to sit next to me then he whispered "If only Ian were here. This is awkward."
I patted his hand and whispered back "It's ok."
Healer Crystal spread the jelly around with the monitor thing that she used to see with, she pushed a little to get better pictures. "Mhm" she muttered taking pictures for a while, "oh there it is." She said excitedly.
I looked away from the screen.
"Since her partner couldn't be here she doesn't want to know. They're having a gender reveal party so they both find out at the same time." Landon explained.
"Oh. I see." She said. "Well then I'll put this picture in a separate envelope for you." Then she went on, "My friend Soaks in the Sun did the same thing while her partner was off on business. She waited and waited till he got back and then her family presented her with a cake that hid the gender pink or blue."
"Which one was it?" I asked.
"It was a little girl. She's almost one year old now." The healer said. "It's ok for you to look Lives in the Stars."
I did and there on the screen was my baby, wither boy or girl there was only one question I needed answered, "Does everything look ok?" I asked concerned.
The healer looked at me and smiled, "everything is just fine. The baby is in perfect health."
I exhaled, relieved.
She took a towel and gave it to me to wipe off the jelly and she wiped off the monitor thing with another.
"Now, Lives in the Stars, since you just moved here do you have a healer who you want to deliver your baby?"
I hadn't expected this question. It was so obvious to me that Doc would be delivering the baby that I hadn't thought about it. I thought quickly and spoke carefully. "I do have a healer in mind. I have been speaking with him about my pregnancy for the last few months but he hasn't moved up into the community yet. I don't think he even has the equipment you all have here. Though I trust him, he's delivered children before."
Landon was tense at my side as the healer answered.
She sat thoughtful, "Well he's probably not bringing equipment from his last assignment up here. He could always order some equipment. If you'd like I can give you a phone number to call to place an order."
I nodded, "That would be great, and I'll pass it along to him. Is there a website too so he can check out what is available?"
She nodded, "Yes. I'll write that down for you as well." Then she got up and left the room.
I took this opportunity to take some heal inside and out, seal, no pain and smooth. For the men who kept getting hurt. It was never anything serious but it would be nice to have nonetheless.
When the healer came back she gave me a manila envelope. "This" she said handing it to me "has the pictures of your baby as well as the envelope with the gender of the baby. And it has the information you requested."
"Thank you healer." I said holding the envelope close.
"You're very welcome. I suggest you come back in about a month and continue to take the prenatal spray. Would you like a second one in case you run out?"
I nodded. "I think that would be a good idea."
Instead of reaching into one of the cabinets as I feared she would do, she opened a drawer and handed me another one that was labeled 'Pregnancy'.
"I really appreciate this." I said offering my hand to shake hers.
She shook it, "The pleasure was all mine Lives in the Stars. And you can make another appointment with the receptionist. Have a pleasant day." She said opening the door and Landon and I walked out together.
Once in the car with my return appointment and my envelope I decided to open it. I looked at the first few pictures.
This was really a life I had in me. It looked from the pictures like a science experiment in a ball. It was curved and you could see its head, arms and legs.
That night after I gave the gender envelope to Mal, Ian and I sat there and looked at our baby.
Ian couldn't stop staring at the pictures.
"I've always wanted a family." He tells me after a while, "I just had to lose that idea after the souls came." He smiled, just smiling at the picture, "who knew that the souls coming would bring me my soul-mate."
I giggled. Soul-mate. That was funny to me how he'd put that together. Maybe I was a little tired. I laid my head against his shoulder, "Yes. I'm so much happier here with you than anywhere else in the galaxy."
Mel and I were in the kitchen the next day. She told me I wasn't allowed to go over to the area she was in but she talked to me the whole time.
"I can't wait to go baby shopping." Mel said. "And it takes a load off our backs not having to steal it. Baby stuff use to be REALLY expensive."
I thought about it, being responsible for a baby. I thought about what I'd have to do as mother.
Feeding, changing, waking up with, rocking and holding a baby.
A feeling I wasn't sure of creeped into my chest and my eyes started to tear up while my stomach started to get upset.
I rushed for the nearest empty sink and threw up into it.
"Wanda?" Mel said cautiously, "you ok?"
I didn't answer her till my stomach had emptied.
"I'm fine" I gasped out. I thanked my lucky stars that I'd had the foresight to tie my hair back.
"Is it more morning sickness? Or was it my cooking?"
I washed the stuff down the drain not wanting to throw up again and grabbed a water bottle out of one of the 3 fridges. "No. It's not morning sickness I was just thinking about becoming a mother." I tried to place the tightness in my chest and then I found the work for how I was feeling. "I'm terrified Mel."
It was fear, not for me but for the child I would be in charge of. I was scared I wouldn't do it right, that somehow I would find a way to mess everything up.
Mel wiped off her hands and came over to me and rubbed my back as I was still bending over the sink. "I get it." She said "I get why you'd be scared. This is another one of those firsts for you."
"I seem to be having those all the time now." I mumbled
"Look Wanda." She said softly, "Remember when you were on a raid in my body and you saw the soul couple with the human baby?"
I did remember that. I remember seeing the woman being so happy and the man being happy and them loving their little human child.
"Yes" I say softly
"Now put you and Ian in there, don't worry about who is and who isn't a soul. Put you and Ian into those parents places."
I did. I imagined pushing a little baby on a child appropriate swing and Ian making funny faces at the baby while it squealed with happiness. My chest started to lighten up and I turned to her. "Thanks Mel."
She smiled and hugged me, "You're not alone in this Wanda. Ian is here to help you and Jared and I am here for you."
I smiled and hugged her back. I was happy that I wasn't alone but I was still worried for the child.
My worries were still on my mind when it was time for a late lunch. The men came in smiling and dripping in sweat with red necks from the sun.
I tried my best to look happy and hopeful, associating with everyone and trying to be myself.
When Mel and Brandon walked out of the kitchen with a cake beautifully decorated. "Attention everyone!" She called to everyone.
The room went silent.
"A lot has happened in the last year or so." Mel began, "I was taken, Wanda came, I was returned and we got to keep the best soul out there." She paused and then smiled at Burns, "No offense."
He chuckled, "None taken."
"But our current situation is a totally new thing. Wanda is having a baby. A soul is having a human child with a human." She let that sink in. "Now yesterday Wanda got an ultrasound and got the gender of her baby which she passed to me to reveal it for the first time so both her and Ian could have the experience together."
My body started to shake and I could feel the excitement pumping thru my veins.
"I baked this cake and the color of the cake will tell you what the gender of your baby is." Mel said looking at me and Ian. "Blue is boy and Red is girl, cause I couldn't make pink."
Brandon placed the cake on the table in front of me; Ian and everyone waited with anxious smiles.
Ian grabbed a knife that Mel had offered and then he looked at me, "Ready?" He asked smiling at me.
I took a deep breath and nodded, "Yes Ian. I'm ready."
Ian nodded and plunged the knife into the cake. I held my breath what was I having? A boy or a girl?
