Chapter 14
"Hmm... yes... oh..." String of moans slipped through the parted lips, Arizona threw her head back and gasped. "It feels so good."
The woman between her thighs smiled, and then ran the tip of her tongue along the length of the drenched center before touching the erected bundle of nerve by the top lip.
"You're such a tease..." The blonde groaned, but not complaining. She had lost track of time that how long had her girlfriend been there caressing her sensitive skins with the gentle touch of the talented tongue and lips. It didn't matter. They had all the time in the world.
Brown eyes were closed and Callie was thoroughly enjoying her work of lapping away at Arizona happily, until she felt tender fingertips pressed into her face. The hands continued their journeys, sliding forward with the fingers interlocking behind the brunette's neck, cupping the tan cheeks by the palms, urging Callie's gaze upward.
Callie chest swelled with emotion when their eyes met. In the thrill of their love making, even though the blue eyes were dark as the winter night, they were warm and radiated with affectionateness. With a smile in her eyes, the brunette wrapped her lips around the clit and fluttered her tongue against it. The new sensation made the blonde heaved a ragged sigh and tightened her grip on her girlfriend's neck.
Long creamy legs quivered uncontrollably, Arizona tried to hold out but when Callie hummed in absolute contentment and pushed the tongue inside of her, the eye contact broke. The blonde's eyes rolled in the back of her head as the pleasure took over her body.
"Right there, right there..." The blonde whispered in rushed breaths, grinding down ever so slightly, her body writhing under the ministration of her girlfriend's skillful hands on her chest. As the tongue thrusting in and out of her picked up the tempo, adding the twist of her nipples, it reached her breaking point. It was not an earth shattering explosion but it was easily her favorite. It felt like the waves of a tide ebbing from the center of her body to her head, to her toes... Her body felt warm, and her heart felt loved.
Callie crawled up the bed leaving kisses on the still shuddering body in her wake, she took in the look of the woman that captured her heart with an amuse grin. The blonde was drawing in big, heaving breaths, her eyes were closed and the blonde hair was a mess... she was so damn sexy, and beautiful.
"Thanks for letting me kissed you under the mistletoe a year ago from today." Nipping at Arizona's lower lip and sighed in utter contentment, Callie pressed her forehead against the blonde's, her hands cupping the slightly flushed face gently, and stared deep into the slowly opening blue eyes. "Happy anniversary."
"Happy anniversary." Arizona smiled. "I love you."
It's pretty scary to know how quickly time flies. It had been a year since Callie and Arizona finally admitted their true feeling to each other. And it had been a year since the two had been together. Like every other couple, it wasn't all sun shine and rainbow of course, but they always found the ways to solve their differences. After all, love trumps everything.
"I love you too." Callie breathed out from her heart. Her roaming hand traveled to the blonde's hip and caressed the soft body lovingly. "Actually, I love you more."
"That's impossible." Snaking both arms around Callie's neck, the blonde tilted her head giving her girlfriend a flirtatious smile before pressing her lips against the brunette's.
Suddenly, a sharp knock came at the door following with someone shouting from the outside.
"Torres! Robbins!"
"Ignore it." Tightening her arms, Arizona murmured against the sweet lips. She slid her tongue along Callie's lower lip before pressing their lips together once again. A sexy moan coming from the back of her throat made the brunette forgetting about the world outside their little bubble.
However, the poundings coming from the door were getting louder and more hurried. Apparently the person outside was determined to get the couple answering the door.
"I should get that..." Callie grunted before peered her lips away, glaring at the direction of their door.
"Don't go." The pouting blonde cupped her girlfriend's cheek, pulling her attention back to what they were doing. "You said that we're not gonna leave this bed today."
"He'd break down the door if he wants to." Giving the blonde a quick peck, Callie jumped out of their bed reaching for a robe. "I promise you, I'll get rid of him real quick, and we won't leave this bed again. Just wait here, and don't start anything without me."
Walking out of their bedroom, Callie smoothed her sex hair with one hand and yanked the front door with the other. She barked at the person that pulled her away from her very sexy and very naked girlfriend.
"What do you want, Mark?!"
"Torres!" Mark exclaimed enthusiastically. Normally, seeing the disheveled form of his best friend, especially the messy hair, the man would give a dirty look, a couple of jeers or a smirk, but not this time. The grin hanging on his face was nothing but excitement, and he was waving something like a roll of crumpled up wrapping paper in his hand fiercely.
"What? What is this?" The annoyed brunette snatched the mysterious object from the man, darting a glare at him before opened it.
Mark bounced on his flexing feet and rubbed his hands together, with a smile that was almost ecstatic. And when Callie pulled out a pregnancy test strip and looked at him with questioning eyes, he shouted at the top of his lungs.
"Lexis is pregnant! I'm gonna be a dad!"
"Oh my god!" And now Callie was as excited as the father-to-be. She jumped up and down before pulled her friend in for a tight embrace. "Congratulations! You always wanted to have a kid."
"I do!" The tall man wrapped his arms around the brunette, his voice shock with emotion. "She didn't drink at the Christmas party last night, you know, saying that she had a stomach bug or something. And then this morning she puked her guts out and I offered to take her to the hospital. And she handed me the pregnancy test wrapped in gift paper!"
"It's a great Christmas present, Mark." Callie laughed and handed the said present back to the man.
"It is. And I can't ask for a better gift." Mark looked at the pregnancy test with a goofy smile. And he remembered why he was there. "Where is Robbins?"
"She's in..." The brunette gestured to the bedroom with her head turned slightly, and Mark already strode pass her into the apartment.
"Robbins!" The man yelled whilst walked toward the closed bedroom door, but stopped to a halt as the brunette grasped the back of his shirt forbidding him from taking another step forward. Callie loved this man, but there was no way for her to let him seeing the birth of his own child if he entered the bedroom where her girlfriend was wearing nothing but her birthday suit.
"What...?" Mark turned away chuckled at the brunette, trying to free his shirt from the grip. His ass was saved from being kicked by Callie as the bedroom door open before him.
"What's with all the noise?" Arizona managed to put on a loose shirt and a sweat pants before opened the door, in time to see the wrestling match between the two friends. "What are you two doing?"
"Mark has a good..." Callie jerked her head toward her friend, about to fill her girlfriend in, but the excited man beat her to it as he shouted again.
"Lexie is pregnant!" Mark waved the strip in his hand with a toothy grin.
"Congratulations, Mark!" The blonde gave a genuine smile, but hesitating to hug the man. She was happy for Mark, no doubt about that. Over the year, they had grown closer because of Callie. They were friendly, just not friendly enough for her to give him an intimate embrace when she had nothing else underneath her shirt.
"Thanks!" Too engrossed in his excitement, Mark was oblivious to the blonde's hesitation and took a step closer. "And Arizona, I need you."
Unconsciously, Arizona took a step back, looking pass the tall man to lock eyes with her girlfriend who was as confused as her. And her glance drifted to the wide opened front door when there was another person come to join their party.
"Mark, I told you not to bother them." A worry looking Lexie rushed into the apartment, scolding at her boyfriend before apologized to the couple. "I'm sorry, I came back from the bathroom and he was gone."
"It's okay, Lexie. He's just too excitement." Callie punched Mark's shoulder playfully. "And we're happy for you two. Congratulations, Lexie."
"Yeah, congratulations, Lexie." Arizona smiled to the young brunette, and she noticed the sickly look on the new comer's face. "But... are you alright? You look a little pale."
"I'm fine, it's just morning sickness, you know." Lexie placed a hand on her stomach, and her boyfriend wrapped a protective arm around her shoulder as she walked closer to the group.
"The first few months could be difficult." Smiling sympathetically, Arizona asked. "Do you know how far along are you?"
"That's why we need you, Arizona." Once again, Mark called the blonde by her first name. He only did that when he needed something from her. "Can you give Lexie an OB ultrasound?"
"Mark, how many times do I have to tell you that she's not an OB?" Callie called over her shoulder on the way to the kitchen, getting the coffee ready.
"Lucy Fields is the OB at the hospital, we can ask her..." Lexie tilted her head to Mark prompting. She really didn't want to bother the Peds surgeon.
"I know, but... Arizona found out the problem of Sloane's baby the last time. I trust her. This is my baby." Saying sweetly, Mark put his hand on Lexie's belly. "I want the best for my baby."
"Okay, I'll set it up tomorrow." Touched by the man's tender gesture, and the praise coming from his mouth, the blonde answered the request with a nod. That made the father-to-be's face broke into a delighted smile. But he wanted more.
"Can we do that today?"
"Mark, it's their day off. We can wait for another day." Lexie frowned at her boyfriend. He should have known that Callie and Arizona had moved mountains, freeing their surgical schedules in order to get this day to them during the busy time of the year.
"But I can't wait." Mark whined like a 5 years old begging for ice-cream. He turned his puppy dog eyes to the blonde. "Arizona, please?"
"Fine, I'll stop by the hospital." Arizona rolled her eyes playfully. And she chuckled aloud when a complaint was shouting from their kitchen. "Just give me an hour."
"Thank you thank you thank you." The happy man stepped forward, grabbing the blonde's upper arms and gave her a sounding kiss on her cheek. It made Arizona laugh, and the woman just came up behind him growled.
"Hey grabby, watch out." Callie squinted at her best friend before passed a cup of coffee to her girlfriend. "You've got what you want, now leave us alone."
"Okay okay." Mark held his hands up and backed toward the front door. He just couldn't help himself from teasing his friend. "I don't understand why you're so grumpy. From the look of the fresh hickey on your collarbone, I'm sure you had..."
"Get out!" Quick like a cat, the brunette picked up a cushion from the couch and threw it at Mark. It hit his chest but didn't stop the roar of laughter coming from him.
"Arizona, see you in an hour." The man winked before closed the door, going back to his apartment with his pregnant girlfriend.
"Are you really going to go to the hospital?" Callie looked at her lover with a pretentious pout. They had plans for their anniversary, leaving the apartment this early in the morning wasn't one of them. "You're not supposed to go to work today."
"I'm not really going in for work, just to do him a favor. And he is your friend, you know he wouldn't leave us alone if I don't give Lexie an ultrasound, today." Taking a sip of the coffee, Arizona handed the cup back to the brunette before turned around back to the bedroom. She said whilst shedding the shirt on her body. "Come on, I'm gonna take a shower. You wanna stay there pouting or come join me?"
It didn't take more than a second of Callie to make up her mind, losing the robe on the way following to the bathroom.
After a steamy shower, the love birds walked at a leisurely pace toward the hospital with their hands locked together.
"You don't have to go with me if you don't want to, you know." Arizona smiled to the woman who was holding her hand. "It'll just take me half an hour and then I'll come home to you."
"I don't have to but I want to." Smiling back, Callie leaned forward kissing her girlfriend on the lips. "And I want to see Mark's face when he sees the ultrasound. I'm sure he's going to cry.
"It is great, isn't it?" The blonde nodded her head. She could totally see the usual macho man tear up hearing the heartbeat from the machine.
"Yes, it is. He wants to have kids for so long. And the fact that Lexie is going to be his baby mama, he's over the moon." Callie said animatedly. She was genuinely happy for her best friend.
The two continued their track in a comfortable silence until Arizona raised a question when they were nearby the emergency entrance of the hospital.
"And you're okay? Of Mark getting his dream comes true?"
"Why wouldn't I be okay?" Callie made a little grimace, didn't really understand the question.
"Because it is your dream too." The blonde cast a sideway glance, mumbling under her breath.
"Hey, we've talked about it." The brunette took a step forward, walking backward in order to look at Arizona in her eyes. "My dream has changed."
"I know. It just... seeing your friend being a parent..." Arizona shrugged a shoulder. She knew that Callie had changed her mind about babies, but she also knew that people who want children wouldn't just decide don't want them anymore. A trigger like this could stir the desire once again.
"I'm happy for Mark, but in the meantime I'm sorry for this kid. Mark is basically a big kid himself, can you imagine..." It would be a lie to say that knowing Mark's going to be a dad didn't tickle her heart, but Callie wasn't going to admit it to her girlfriend. So, she was trying to make light of it. Still walking backward, she wasn't aware of a cardboard box on the sidewalk and almost tripped over it.
"Be careful!" Luckily, their hands were still linked together. Arizona tugged her hand helping the brunette to regain her equilibrium.
"Who would put a box next to the hospital entrance? The loading dock is on the other side..." Callie looked down at the box and then looked around, trying to find the irresponsible bearer who left it there. And her eyes went wide when a quavering wail coming from the box.
"What...?" Quickly opening the box, Arizona gasped and locked eyes with the brunette. "There's a baby in here!"
"Okay, let's get the show started." Arizona announced as she walked in the exam room, where Lexie was already on the OB table with Mark sitting by her side.
"It took you long enough." Mark mumbled sullenly. Arizona was supposed to meet them about half and hour ago, for the anxious man, it felt like a life time.
"Mark!" Lexie chided her boyfriend instantly. She was as excited and eager to see their baby for the first time, but she didn't forget that Arizona was doing them a favor on her holiday. "Thank you for doing this today, Arizona."
"You are welcomed, Lexie." The blonde smiled to the young woman on the table, ignoring the rude remarks from Mark as she walked to the cabinet for her gear. "For the record, I was here a while ago. Callie and I found a foundling outside the hospital when we walked in. We were talking to the police."
"Oh my god, that's terrible." Lexie frowned, instinctively covered her stomach with a hand. "How can a mother abandon their own baby?"
"Yeah, that's what I always say, not everyone's capable of being a parent." Arizona signed whilst sitting down on a stool next to the exam table. She plastered on a smile before looking at the couple. "However, I'm sure you two are gonna be an excellent parents. Are you ready to meet your baby?"
"More than ready." Mark was practically bouncing on the chair. He clasped his hand with Lexie's while Arizona applied the gel, and then moved the wand around Lexie's belly.
"There's your baby." The Peds surgeon turned the monitor toward her friends with a grin. And she pointed to a particular part. "There is the yolk sac. Looks good."
"And how far along our pregnancy is? When is the due date?" Mark's bright eyes twinkled as he caught the image on the monitor. "I don't see a heartbeat. Where is the heartbeat?"
"You have a lot of questions. I'm glad that I'm not gonna be your OB." Arizona joked lightly. The man's excitement was understandable though. "It seems that you're around 7 weeks. And for the heartbeat..."
Slim finger pressed a button, and a steady rhythm came through the speaker.
"Oh my god..." Mark and Lexie exclaimed simultaneously. The young mother's eyes were filled with tear of joy. And she broke into a beaming smile when she looked into the red, tear-rimmed eyes of the father of her child.
"That's our baby." Lexie breathed out in a whisper, as if she was afraid to startle their baby.
"Yeah, we're having a baby." Mark kissed the love of his life on the lips gently, and then pressed their foreheads together with eyes close, letting the sensation of happiness engulfing them.
Arizona watched her friends with a smile. She and Mark didn't see eye to eye in a lot of things, and she made no secret of finding the man arrogant and annoying. However, thanked to Callie, she got to know him better, knowing that under the irritating smirk, there was a big heart that cared about his friends, and capable of love. She couldn't be happier for him finally got to be with his true love, and a child that he had always long for.
"I'm gonna leave you to this." After double checked the reading of the baby and printed out a picture for the couple, the blonde stood up from the stool. "As I said, everything looks good, but don't forget to make an appointment with Fields for the follow up."
"Thank you, Arizona." Mark said before the doctor slipped out of the door. His face expanded in a smile of gratitude. "Thanks for doing this."
"You're welcomed, Mark." Smiling back in return, Arizona closed the door behind her.
The blonde leaned back against the door and took a deep breath. She was no stranger of seeing the joy on the parents' faces. They would smile, or shake with sobs, or even scream knowing that their little ones were doing alright. Somehow, seeing this on someone she knew, witnessing the gratification of the beginning of a life had stirred something deep in her heart that she had never expected.
She knew this baby was going to be the luckiest baby in the world. It was a union of two people that loved each other dearly, and they'd love this baby to the bone.
And her mind drifted to the unfortunate baby that she found earlier. Lexie was right, how can a mother abandon their own baby?
Arriving at the Peds floor, Arizona looked for the baby that she knew should be settled in there, but there was no sight of the new arrival. She was about to ask the nurse but then she saw her girlfriend walking out of the elevation with the said baby in her arms, and Cristina next to her.
"Where have you been?" Arizona asked softly, seeing the baby nuzzling into to Callie's neck, little hand gripped tightly on the brunette's top. His eyes were swollen with barely dry tear stains. "What happen?"
"We went for the scans. Oscar was scared and refused to lay on the gurney. He asked for a cuddle." Callie cooed to the baby soothingly. "Were you, Oscar?"
"Oscar? They found his parents?" Arizona's eyebrows rose. It was quick.
"No, but we can't keep calling him baby, or the foundling." The brunette nodded toward the resident standing by the nurse station. "So Cristina gave him a name."
"Yeah, Oscar the Grouch. You found him in a trash can. Oscar fits." Cristina shrugged nonchalantly while passing a tablet to the Peds surgeon.
"It was not a trash can, Yang." Arizona gave the resident a disapproval glance before reading the scans.
"Same difference." Cristina smirked, apparently pleased by her own wit.
"What do we know?" Bouncing the baby on her hips, Callie asked while her girlfriend focused on the chart.
"He's about 6 months old. Low SATs, high BP, failure to thrive..." The surgeon shook her head swiping through the scans. "I don't know how long he was out there under this weather. I should have the nurse get him a bottle of formula first."
"Not so fast. I may have to put him understand for a cardiac cath. I've paged Altman for a consult." Cristina quickly swiped the screen, showing the blonde a scan of the baby's chest. And Arizona's brows knitted together.
"Something's wrong?" The frown on the blonde's face indicted that it was not good. Subconsciously, Callie held the baby closer.
"He had a median sternotomy, and a couple of chest tubes." Sighing deeply, Arizona looked up at the baby with sympathy. And a smile touched the corners of her lips when she saw a penguin waddling down the hallway toward them. "How are you feeling today, Teddy?"
"Feels like I'm about to pop any minute now." Teddy panted slightly as she stopped in front of the group, a hand caressing her nine months pregnancy belly tenderly. And she noticed the baby that Callie was holding. "This is the baby that you found by the dumpster?"
"It wasn't by the dumpster." The blonde rolled her eyes and landed them on the smirking Cristina. "He was in a cardboard box by the emergency entrance."
"Same difference." The resident shrugged her shoulder again.
"Hi little guy, why are you crying, huh?" Oblivious to the banter between the attending and the resident, the pregnant surgeon was more interested in the baby boy. "You have the most beautiful blue eyes, do you know that? Do you?"
"Dr. Altman..." Cristina made a grimace at the baby-talk. Clearing her throat, she asked for her boss's attention. "He has a median sternotomy. I think I'd had a cardiac cath to confirm he has had a coarctation of his aorta."
"Do you have a coarctation of your aorta? Do you?" Still coaxing at the baby, Teddy gave a satisfying laugh when Oscar finally broke into a small grin. "I'll do the cardiac cath."
"Dr. Altman, I thought..." The resident protested slightly. The heavily pregnant attending had assigned most of the surgeries to her those days, she thought that she'd be handling this one as well.
"You don't like children. I'm just taking you out of your misery." Teddy said to her resident. It was not that she didn't trust Cristina's capable hands, just the overflowing maternal love within made her wanting to take care of this little boy herself. She took the tablet from her colleague. "You're on you day off, right? Can you page Karev for me?"
"I..." Arizona looked over her girlfriend and the baby in her arms. She had the same mind as Teddy, and Callie could easily read that. Getting a nod from the brunette, the Peds attending offered. "I can assist."
"Good, book an OR and I'll meet you there. I have to go to the restroom first. And you know I'm gonna need more time to get to there." The Cardio attending waved goodbye to her friends, giving the baby an air kiss before waddled to the nearby restroom.
"You don't mind?" Arizona stepped closer to her girlfriend, who was smiling to her. "I know you want to spend the day for just the two of us."
"I do want that, but don't worry about it." Tenderly, Callie brushed a strain of blonde hair behind Arizona's ear. "We're going to have a lot more anniversaries in the future."
"Okay, I'm gonna prep him for the procedure. Come on, baby." The blonde clapped her hands before reaching for Oscar. The baby was hesitated. Eventually, he leaned forward into the friendly looking woman's waiting arms.
"Be strong, Oscar." Callie ruffled the baby's short blonde hair before Arizona took him away. And she would see the big blue eyes were quickly filled with tears and his bottom lip quivered. Callie was the one familiar face that he had knew in this strange place in the last hour, being taken away from her, he got scared again.
Before taking the few steps rushing to his side, the brunette saw her girlfriend put on her biggest magic dimpled smile.
"Don't worry, Oscar. I'll good take care of you, okay?"
"Hey Torres, they told me that I can find you in here." Mark craned his head into the gallery, glad to find the one that he was looked for among the few residents that were observing the surgery in the OR under them.
"Who?" Callie raised her eyebrows.
"Yang and Big Grey." The man sat down next to his friend. He eyed the small body on the operation table. "So that's the baby you found."
"Yeah. Can you believe it? He was just inside a box by the entrance." The brunette forked her fingers through her hair and sighed. "Oh hey, how about your baby?"
"Blondie didn't tell you? Everything's okay." Mark fished out the ultrasound picture from his pocket. "You wanna meet your god child?"
"I'm gonna be the god mother?" A smile dangled on Callie's lips as she took hold of the picture. And Mark broke into a snigger, like it was even a question.
"Of course you are."
"I wanna say the baby looks like you, but..." Snuggling her cheek against her best friend's shoulder, Callie held up the picture and squinted at it, but it was hard to see anything clear in that blurred image.
"Don't worry, you're gonna get an update picture every month." The man laughed out and took back the picture. To be honest, he couldn't figure out much from it as well. "So, when are you and blondie going to reproduce?"
"You know that we have decided not to have children." Callie gave her friend a sidelong glance. It wasn't the first time that Mark brought this up, and she gave the same answer every time.
"No, she called the shot and you ran with it." Not letting up, Mark waved the picture in his hand. "Tell me you don't want one of these."
"It was a mutual decision, Mark." The brunette sat up, putting her focus back to the procedure that her girlfriend was currently working on. "Teddy's son is going to be Arizona's god son, and now yours..."
"It's not the same thing." Mark cut her off, saying matter-of-factly. "Derek and Big Grey adopted Zola that makes me her uncle Mark, I love that little girl and Lexie adores her niece, but it's not the same as having your own child."
"Well, you and I see things differently then." Callie pursed her lips and loomed emotionless.
"Seriously? You don't feel any temptation at all?" The plastic surgeon looked at the brunette with some curiously. And Callie didn't need to turn her head to know the blue eyes were fixed on her.
"Nope." Her voice was even. Somehow, a hint of annoyance could be detected between her brows.
"Come on, it's me." Mark pushed again, but not solely for wanting to irritate his friend. He did care about her. And he thought that maybe Callie was given up too much for this relationship. "You can tell me how you truly feel, you know."
"Listen to me, Mark. I'm happy for you guys of course, but I don't feel the itch." Shifting in her seat, Callie looked deep into Mark's blue eyes with a little fire in her own. She really needed the man to hear her words. "I'm happy with Arizona. I'm happy with where we are now. I don't need a baby to be happy."
"If you say so. Well, more love for my little Sloan." The man smirked and held up his hands in surrender. Knowing his fierce Latino friend, she was seconds away from biting his head off. And Callie gave her a hard glare before turned back to the operation before them.
"I'm going to reopen. Prep a balloon catheter. Somebody tried to fix his coarctation but did a hack job. Look, it's closing up already." Teddy's instruction to the nurse could be heard through the speaker. Mark asked Callie with a furrow between his eyebrows.
"Any news about the mysterious baby?"
"No record in this hospital. The police are working on it, I guess. And I've call the social service, they haven't called back yet." The brunette answered absentmindedly, looking worriedly at the monitor.
"This is just crazy. I don't understand why anyone could just leave their baby on the street. It's December for god sakes." Mark heaved a deep, heartfelt sigh. "At least Sloane had the decency to put her baby up for adoption."
"People like the idea of having children, but not everyone is up for the responsibility. Arizona was right." Callie said, remembering her conversation with Arizona half year ago.
"It's just sad, being abandoned before Christmas." The man sighed again. And he asked, "How old is he?"
"He should be around 6 months old. Beautiful blond hair, big blue eyes..." Callie took her eyes off of the OR, and her gaze fixated on the Mark's face suddenly.
"What?" The Plastic surgeon frowned.
"He looks a little like you, especially the blue eyes." Trying hard to suppress a smirk, the brunette found a way to get back to the man who ruined her morning, and tried to piss her off minutes ago. "Eight... plus nine... it was around the time Sloane came to here, Lexie dumped you and you started to sleep around..."
"Don't..." Mark's blue eyes widened, holding up a finger daring the brunette to continue.
"Would that be from one of your random hook ups? I mean, that's possible." Putting on a serious face, Callie nodded her head as if she was struck by the sudden realization. "And she left your son in this hospital to reunion with you before Christmas. It makes sense."
"No! It doesn't!" Mark's was a little pale and a little restless because there was a chance that it could be true. "And don't you ever say that in front of Lexie! She'd kill me..."
The man was about to scream, and was interrupted by a phone going off.
"Save by the bell." Callie held up her phone and sang. She shot up from the chair seeing who was calling. "It's the social service. I have to take this."
Arizona sensed the movement upstairs and watched her girlfriend left the gallery. And she was startled when Teddy cursed under her breath.
"Dammit!"
"What? You have a contraction?" Blue eyes widened, staring at the lead surgeon across the table.
"No. See his mitral valve?" Teddy nodded her head indicating the assist surgeon to look into the open chest. "The valve leaflets were thickened and shortened. It's the parachute mitral valve."
"Shone's complex?" The blonde gasped.
"That answers why his parents abandoned him." The Cardio sighed through her mask, and locked eyes with her friend. "The kid had one heart surgery, and he needs at least two more. Someone though he was more trouble than he's worth."
"Poor kid..." Arizona turned her gaze to the face of the unconscious baby, with a look of deep significance.
Later after the surgery, Callie found her girlfriend in the PICU, sitting next to a crib. Walking closer, she could see that it was Oscar in there, hooking up with multiple wires.
"How is he doing?" Standing by the other side of the crib, she asked her girlfriend in whisper.
"SATs are better." Arizona gave a small smile before glanced at the monitor. The surgery was a success. Oscar was still under anesthesia, giving the little body the necessary time to rest.
"Teddy said that she was able to fix the valve, but he'd need a few more follow up surgeries." Callie said to the blonde, in a tone of sadness.
"Yeah, Shone's complex." Blue eyes shifted to the sleeping baby and became glazed with a glassy layer of tears. Her heart ached for the poor child. No children should be suffering this. "His parents gave up on him because they couldn't afford a sick kid."
"We have talked to the social worker. She knows the condition and is going to find a way to settle him." Brushing Oscar's chubby face with the back of her hand, Callie said with sympathy in her voice. "But she said with the pre-existing condition like this, it would be hard to find him a foster home, let alone getting someone to adopt him."
"The surgeries would be very expensive." Arizona blew out a long, frustrated sigh. "Our health system sucks."
"I think that's why his parents put him outside the hospital, hoping that someone would find him and bring him inside." The brunette walked around the crib, putting a comforting hand on her obviously upset girlfriend. "At least they have thought about it before abandoned him."
"I can't imagine how desperate they were to leave their own child." Resting her chin on the railing of the crib, the blonde spited out the words with contempt. "Have I said that our health system sucks?"
"You did." Callie let out a sarcastic chuckle. She couldn't agree more. And she caught the clock on the wall and reminded the blonde. "Our dinner reservation is in an hour."
Nodding her head in acknowledgment of what that meant, Arizona looked around the PICU. There were few more tiny humans been hospitalized in the same room, and they all had their parents surrounding them, caring for them.
"Callie, I know it's Christmas Eve and it's our anniversary, but..." The blonde tilted her head to look into the brown eyes. "He would be woken up soon. Can we stay a little longer? I don't want him to be alone."
"Of course we can." Kissing the top of the blonde head, and then Callie pulled a chair to sit next to her girlfriend. True to be told, she didn't want to leave either.
The two sat there in a comfortable silence. Callie held Arizona's hand in hers while the blonde's other hand was gently caressing the little boy's golden hair.
