Arya had used a small bird to fly through the halls to find Cersei. Through a window she saw Taron and Aulix too, fighting the few remaining Gold Cloaks. Her target was in the Throne Room. Returning to her own mind, she circled around, so that she would come into the Throne room from the kitchens. If Cersei went towards the Holdfast, she'd be able to follow easily. Although revealing herself wouldn't happen until her friend's engaged in battle with the Mountain. Arya was ready to fight.
Aulix was using two swords, both coated in what he'd made in the basement of the house destroyed by wildfire. Like the blind elder had said, the potion contradicted itself and would help undo the essence of what kept the Mountain living. The intent was to slow him down. Fighting with two swords at the same time required a lot of concentration, but Aulix was a master at this style. The fighting would be slower, but could cause deep and powerful cuts. The advantage was that a skilled swordsman could defend and counterattack almost instantly. Only someone who had gone through intense conditioning, with strong hands and refined co-ordination, coupled with superb balance and footwork, could use two swords in combat like this and be effective.
The swords that Aulix used, Gendry had sharpened at Saltpans. Gendry had noticed that they were lightweight and expertly balanced, which made them perfect for the two sword technique. They wouldn't be very effective against heavy armour, like the breast plate of a knight. But chainmail and the joints in the legs, which allowed them to move under the armour, could be penetrated. To cut, he would have to add torque to the blade, while carving deep. For anyone else, they would tire after a few swings. Aulix was the exception; he had both upper body strength without sacrificing his flexibility and agility. Sticking to the plan, he would go after legs and arms. If you cut out the Mountain's legs, he became nothing more than a hill. He didn't have to worry about the Mountain having fast attacks, but the power behind that one sword, could kill him in one blow.
Taron's preference for fighting was quick movements, darting in and out. His blades were covered in the same goop that Aulix had. One was an ax that could extend to a polearm, spiked knuckle-punchers, daggers and two throwing disks, that were worn around his right arm. The Mountain's armour didn't fit his size exactly. There was a small gap between helmet armour and the metal vest. Another opportunity was the underside of arms. But the best option were the feet and shins, which were mostly covered in just leather.
Both Taron and Aulix were skilled fighters, who kept their cool, staying relaxed. It was second nature for them to gauge their surroundings and employ effective strategies in a fight. It wasn't the first time they went against a man bigger and stronger than them. Whether it was a street fight or with weapons, they both knew that tiring out their opponent, gave them the advantage. When someone got tired, they could leave their guard open and all it took was one good shot to end the fight.
As they approached the Mountain, neither said a word. They heard Cersei tell him to kill them, she'd be in the Throne room. He stood in the garden, with entry to the Throne room at his back, blocking any way past him. Anyone else would be scared just looking at the size of him, let alone the death hungry eyes.
Gregor laughed. "You two won't live long, you're just too skinny sticks. I'll break you in half!"
Still they didn't utter a word. It would irritate their opponent, causing him to begin the fight. Learning his timing, would help them get close to him, without running into the sword or a big first. Since they were outside, it gave them room to fight him from either side. Optimally they wanted to move him out into the open garden, so to circle him during the fight.
"I'll bash in your brains and then fuck your corpses!" Gregor bellowed.
Both expected the worst, since this Knight had no honour and he'd fight dirty any chance he got. The only way to move him, was make the Mountain chase them, to the area where fighting would be to their advantage. However the Knight was a skilled fighter and wouldn't fall for their tricks easily. But anger could cause anyone to make mistakes.
Taron said to Aulix, "this thing talks too much. Big words for a dumb piece of shit."
Aulix grinned, "he's Cersei's dog, what did you expect. Remember his brother is a hound."
Taron spat at the dirt in front of Gregor. "At least the Hound is a good fighter."
Gregor snarled, "I almost killed him when we were kids, he's a coward!"
"He can wield a sword better than you."
The Mountain took a step forward as he swung his sword at Taron. The fight had begun. Their plan was to wear down the Mountain, by dodging his strikes, instead of blocking them. Even a man who'd come back from the dead, without the help of the Lord of Light, would loose stamina over a period of time. This Aulix and Taron, both knew. Aulix could block and counter attack instantly, but when blocking the Knight's sword, it would require a lot of energy to absorb the blow.
A fist came at Taron and he dodged under and away, swinging the ax and making contact with the arm guard. The sound of metal on metal was loud, but not deafening since they were all outside.
"A dent, won't kill me!" Taunted the Mountain, throwing a kick at Taron too.
An arrow was best to puncture armour, but they didn't have one. Taron extended the polearm of the ax. It allowed him to make jabs, while staying out of the danger zone of the sword. He deflected a blow from it and realized just how freakish this monster's strength truly was. If they could get some of the goop into this re-animated man, it would begin to slow him down, by reversing the process. The only way to ensure The Mountain remained dead this time, would be decapitation and then burning head and body to ashes.
"Damn your breath is disgusting. Is it pig shit that you eat?" Taron sneezed.
"I'll eat your corpse, soon enough boy!"
"First he said he'd fuck us, now he wants to eat us…. He's the Mountain That Rides men!"
Aulix said nothing, as Taron goaded Gregor Clegane. A few more steps and he'd join the fight. Taron went low and slashed at Gregor's legs, connecting on the right and causing first blood. Aulix smiled, the goop would start to do it's job. That last comment had unleashed their target's uncontrollable anger. This is what they'd been waiting for.
Blades flashed, as the two swords wielded by Aulix, thrust first high and then low. It was fast and got the attention of Gregor. The swings of his sword were wider and then Taron threw a disk and cut through the leather boot, shearing off the left foot's big toe. It distracted the Mountain but didn't stop him. Roaring in rage, he used his sword like a hammer and tried to chop down on Taron. Aulix went for his legs, just below the knee. Contact was made, but not deep enough to take out the legs completely. He'd have to slash at them a few times. They could see that the Knight's movements seemed heavier, he was getting tired or the goop was starting to work.
"Black blood, you must be rotting from the inside!"
Aulix laughed, "that explains the toxic smell."
Taron lost a dagger and now was down to one disk and just the ax. The polearm took a blow from the sword and broke off.
The right blade cut through the chainmail on the Mountain's arm and the left made a deep gash. The Knight's left arm became useless, so the sword was held by the right only. This caused less power to come through the slashing motion of the sword. Aulix was able to move in close, going low and chopped through the shins, once again just below Gregor's knees. Black blood squirted forth, but the fighting wasn't over. On stubs, The Mountain gave a thrust that the sword left his hand and practically was thrown. Taron was impaled through his stomach and fell to the ground dying.
Rage surged in Aulix and his roar was even louder than what Gregor had done earlier. He cuts off the Mountain's head, kicking it away from the body. He heard Arya's scream, as she saw Taron dying.
"You have a job to do. Go finish your list!" Aulix commanded, his tone of voice was like a slap in the face.
Arya left her friends, focusing on getting Cersei. She knew deep down, Aulix wouldn't let Taron die.
Taron was gasping for breath, trying to tell Aulix how much he loved him.
"Today you will not die my friend. Your path hasn't ended yet." Aulix kissed Taron on the lips, then pulled the sword from his belly.
While Taron struggled to stay conscious, he heard High Valyrian words, but they were not the same as those from the priests of the Lord of Light. Just before his eyes dropped shut, Taron saw Aulix cut his hand and press it to the hole left by the sword.
"Ivestragī ñuha ānogar sagon zȳhon ānogar. Ivestragī ñuha ābrar ondoso zȳhon ābrar. Ivestragī ñuha soul sagon zȳhon soul. Nyke beg ao naejot deliver zirȳla hen sȳndror, arlī ezīmagon se ōños. Nyke beg ao naejot rual zȳhon ābrar, ēva zȳhon drēje morghon."
Aulix opened a vile, that held green liquid, but Taron couldn't swallow it. So he put it in his mouth first and then forced it into Taron's and down the throat. Massaging Taron's chest, he waited and was rewarded with his friend suddenly gasping for breath.
"How… I was dead… Who are you?"
"You weren't dead yet, just standing at the door of the dead. I am who I always am, just as you are you." Aulix answered, but then added, "I've got to patch you up. Then we'll burn that piece of shit and get out of here."
"Arya?"
"She's finishing her list. We've got no time to chat."
Quickly bandaging Taron's wound, the other looked on, as Aulix emptied a vial, lit a flame and burned both body and head of Gregor Clegane. Not even the Night King could bring him back from the dead now.
"He'll burn in hell for eternity and beyond," Taron coughed.
"Can you get on my back? I'll carry you out."
They struggled, but Taron was able to piggy-back on Aulix. They had planned on climbing down the handholds of the rock, where the Red Keep sat on, but they couldn't leave like that now. Luckily, not guard nor rioters paid any attention, as the two went through the main gate and into the streets. Hiding by a water trough, Aulix brought a Gold Cloak's horse to him. It still had the guard on it's back, but a quick flick of the two swords and Aulix killed him easily. He made the horse bow down, to get Taron in the saddle, then as it stood, he got on right behind.
"If you feel like falling, do it backwards, I've got you."
Taron leaned back. "I love you."
Even though he had passed out, this time it wasn't life threatening. They rode out of King's Landing, leaping over the rubble by the gate. Nymeria met them, but Aulix told her to wait for Arya. Urging the horse into a gallop, they moved down Rosby Road to the meeting point.
