Night Wind

Memories, Part One
"I don't like doing this, Danny, but you leave me no choice," Maddie said, tying the final knot. "I'll be up later this morning to wake you up in time for school."
"Joy," he muttered, turning his back to her. His heads were tie to his headboard, leaving him some freedom of movement. "How is this any different from the abuse we witnessed at Nathan's house?"
"You're not being abused, Danny. You are ghost, and therefore, have no emotions."
"Excuse me?!"
"Night, sweetie," she said, turning off the light, and closing the door.
Danny huffed, and tugged on his bonds again. The huntress knew her knots. His thoughts roamed back to when he was newborn, when Night Wind had just gone, and Lunaris had not yet ascended.
"Something bothering you, Eveningstar?" Lunaris asked, passing his an acorn cap. The two of them were building a fairy tea party set in the garden.
"I watered the trees like Night Wind taught me," Eveningstar told her.
"And?"
"A second tree is growing!"
"Have you sensed anything yet?"
"Sensed what?"
"The second of your kind, my little phantom," she said, kissing the top of his head.
He looked puzzled. "Where am I? Who am I?"
"I am Lunaris, the Queen of the Night Stars, and we are Night Wind. You are Phantom, my little phantom. You have no name."
"So that's what happened," Eveningstar murmured to himself. "I remember now."
The call of the Second was buzzing in his mind for days now. He wandered into the Hall, and bowed before the Night Queen upon her throne.
"Permission to speak, my little phantom," she told him.
"I sense one like unto me. He calls from the realm beyond ours. I must go to him," Phantom spoke. "Queen of the Night Stars, please let me go Above."
"Daylight is death to us, Phantom," she warned. "Do you not remember the Ancients' Curse?"
He trembled. "But what if...?"
"No buts, my little phantom. If you wish to leave the Night Wind to search for the Second, then go, but you must not leave our world."
"Yes, my lady," he said, bowing low to her.
"And Phantom..."
He turned back to her.
"Remember what I said about the signs."
I will remember.
"Good."
Phantom sighed, and stared up at the ceiling. Another memory surfaced, as he shifted to be more comfortable.
He was following the buzzing sound, knowing he was getting closer, when something struck him in the back. Firing up an ectoblast, he whipped around to find-nothing?
Puzzled, he let the ectoblast dissipitate, then resumed his path of flight, when something shook the air around him, and knocked him several feet away. Startled, he looked around, but still saw nothing.
"Sorry about that," a kid's voice said. "Didn't mean to startle ya. Name's Youngblood."
Phantom looked around for the the source of the voice, and stratched his head in confusion.
"Oh, yeah, sorry forgot," the voice said, before something sticky and gooey hit him in the face.
Phantom removed the mud from his eyes, and just stared at his gloved hand. Lunaris had insisted on the wardrobe change months prior-black trousers, white boots and belt, black long-sleeved shirt with white stripes on the sleeves. The color scheme set him apart from the other Night Wind, and while uncomfortable, it was easy to maintain.
He looked up in time to dodg another fistful of mud aimed at his head. Instead of forming an ectoblast, he bent down and scooped up a fistful of mud and aimed it right back at his attacker.
"Bulls-eye, baby!" the green-skinned boy next to him laughed, wiping the mud of his face.
"I would say he can see you now, Youngblood," a skeletal avian creature dryly commented.
"Can ya?"
Phantom nodded.
"Hi, I'm Youngblood," the boy said. "Not many people can see me, but the 'kid at heart'. What is your name?"
I am called Phantom. I have no name.
"How come you're moving your fingers?" Youngblood asked. "Can't you talk?"
Forbidden, Phantom signed, shaking his head.
"Oh, sorry about that," Youngblood said sadly. Then his face brightened. "Hey, there's a portal to the human world not far from here."
Phantom looked at him confused.
"A portal is a doorway," explained the parrot. "The one in question leads to the human world, but portals can lead to anywhen in history, not just the present time period. Bad idea if you ask me."
"No one's asking," Youngblood muttered.
Phantom's mouth twitched slightly.
Phantom tried to phase through the glowing rope around, and gasped as it shocked him harder than before. He slumped down on the mattress, and looked over at the alarm clock. 4 AM.
It would be dawn soon.
