Chapter 2

Seth's POV

The drive to the Cullen's seemed to take hours. Sam refused to break any law, and he refused to speed at any time, much to my annoyance. I would occasionally growl as he obediently slowed to a stop at a yellow light, but would quickly quiet down at his threat to order me on another patrol. After my perceived several hours, the Cullen's house came into view. Before Sam could even fully park, I was out the door and running inside. Bella and Edward came to greet me, but I ignored them as I continued deeper into the house, following the strange scent from earlier. It led me to a closed door with Jake guarding at the front. He nodded at me I stood beside him.

"She's going to be fine Seth. Some fractured ribs and it looks like a broken ankle. Severe bruising on the throat, but Carlisle thinks it's nothing beyond that. His biggest concern is her head. The leech, he." Jake began shaking a bit before eventually taking a deep breath to calm himself down. I could already feel my own anger begin to get the best of me as Sam walked forward and placed a firm hand on my shoulder. He nodded at Jake to continue. "The leech must have tried knocking her out. She was hit multiple times across the head. By that gash on her head, we can assume she'll have a concussion. The severity, we don't know," he finished.

I growled but stopped when both Jake and Sam gave me a stern glance. We waited patiently for Carlisle to finish his work, and about half a hour later were called inside the room. I began to make my way forward when Sam pulled my arm back. "You lose control, you go outside. She has been through too much," he said sternly. I nodded and quickly walked in, taking a big whiff of her scent. She looked much better now that Carlisle had bandaged her head, ribs, and ankles and cleaned her up. I couldn't help but stare at her, and I felt myself trying to imagine what her eyes looked like. For some reason, I knew they had to be the most beautiful eyes in Forks, or better, the world.

Jake hit my shoulder to snap me out of my thoughts, which had drowned out Carlisle's speech. "As I was saying, I am concerned she may not be human, completely," he said. Sam and Jake's eyebrows knitted in confusion as I stood in shock, moving closer to the girl almost protectively. "What do you mean? She can't be a wolf, or a vampire. What else is there?" Sam asked with a tired sigh. Carlisle nodded, understanding Sam's concern. "I have heard legends, although I have never seen them. If they were real, I thought they would have been extinct, but something tells me that perhaps she was separated and found her way here," he said before grabbing some hydrogen peroxide.

I watched carefully as Carlisle poured the peroxide onto her arm. It didn't take long for her to briefly turn into water before growing a tail. Her clothes had disappeared, leaving her in just a scaly top to cover her breasts. We all stared at her shock before he dried away the peroxide and she turned back into water again before returning to normal. "That isn't possible," Jake said in shock. "Wolves aren't possible," Sam replied with a tired sigh. "There isn't much we can do until she wakes up and we can get answers," he said as Carlisle nodded in agreement.

"I hate to ask this," he said with a slight frown. "But, her smell. I'm assuming it is because of her, well, species, but her blood. It's a strange mix we don't get with humans. It is very addicting to vampires, almost like how Bella was to Edward," he explained slowly, making me growl. "I know it's a lot to ask, but Jasper is still getting used to the diet, and we do have visiting vampires here and there to see Nessie. Perhaps it is best if she stays with the pack. I will visit when needed to check on her," Carlisle finished.

Sam observed my protective stance over the girl and nodded in agreement. "She can stay with Emily and I. We have an extra room. I will call you as soon as she wakes up," he said before awkwardly shaking Carlisle's hand. There were still some remaining tensions between the Cullens and the other pack members, but I appreciated Sam's effort. Jake went to pick her up but I pushed him out of the way and carefully held her in my arms. Jake looked at me confused but decided not to comment. "Thank you, Carlisle," I said before walking straight to the car. I was too concerned with the injured mermaid in my arms to make conversation with even Esme. I gently stroked her hair in the back seat as Sam and Jake climbed in. Neither spoke to me or asked, and to be honest, I don't think I could answer why I had such a newfound protectiveness for her.

We drove in silence toward's Emily and Sam's house. A light drizzle had begun on our way out, and I looked at her concerned, knowing what could happen if she got wet. Sam drove up to the house, allowing me to carry her inside without exposing her to the rain. Most of the guys were already over watching a game in the living room as Emily cooked in the kitchen. They all quieted down when I walked inside. "Will she be alright?" Embry asked and I nodded. Emily came out with a smile, probably expecting Sam, but quickly gasped as she saw the girl in my arms. "I can explain it all later, or rather Sam can, but she really needs a place to rest."

Emily nodded in understanding. "The guest room is free. And for god's sake, Seth, get some rest. You look like hell," she said sternly. I rolled my eyes and carried her upstairs before gently tucking her into the bed. The room, ironically, was ocean-themed, with sea green walls and seashells scattered about. I stared at her for a few moment's before internally cursing at myself. I knew I should stop, but it was so hard to look away. Shaking my head, I quickly left the room to head downstairs for dinner.
