Chapter 2: Welcome To Wonderland

Alex sat in the transport bus as it took him to his new home, Deadman Wonderland He and Hunter had been give the death penalty after a short trial that had been created to fuck them over. There had been DNA evidence, fingerprints, the works by that point Alex had given up and seriously began to reconsider the plea deal for life. Then the final nail in the coffin showed up, Marcus had survived. He was now wheelchair bound with a shattered back but he was still able to tell everyone in the courtroom that Alex had orchestrated the whole damn thing, setting up explosives, getting better firearms, and even enlisting the help of one Hunter Jefferson who in Marcus's version on events was a bloodthirsty psychopath who slaughtered three random teens for shits and giggles along with his best friend who had tried to stop him. By this point Hunter was in shock being helpless unable to do anything but watch as his life was torn away by lies and other fabrications and at the end they had decided to kill him for something he didn't do. His mother broke down at that point and only got worse when it was announced that Hunter was being sent to Japan thanks do a deal in the prison system. The reason for Alex's transfer was far more believable, he was an immigrant from Japan so now that he had committed an act of domestic terrorism he was getting sent back to serve his sentence. Hunter looked down the entire time not bothering to respond to some of the more rowdy of convicts who would nudge or mock him. Alex signed and looked around no really caught his eye until he saw a boy on the other side of the bus he was small, had black hair and looked even younger than Hunter. Alex made a mental note of him then went back to thinking. The bus stopped and the new prisoners walked off and were given their uniforms, dull green jumpsuits with black down the front and at the end of each limb. Then they were all given a small bag, fitted with collars, and put in a line against a wall. A woman with black hair wearing a blue military esc uniform holding a sword addressed them.

"Hello, my name is Makina and im the warden of this prison." She then looked to Alex and then the small boy and continued. "Before we go over the rules I've been made aware we have a couple minor celebrities joining us today. Five-five-eight-zero, nine-six-six-four, please step forward." Alex and the boy both did as they were told as Makina approached and sized them up before stepping closer to the boy looming over him. "Ganta Igarashi, you slaughtered your classmates for the fun of it and then broke down crying when they passed your sentence." Hunter looked at Ganta in shock, but he didn't react the way Hunter expected mass murderer would, no Ganta just shunk looking down almost like he wanted to just disappear, to die. Makina then stepped over to Alex. "Alexander Kato, the so called Demon of New York, in reality just another punk with a gun who got lucky." Alex stared her down not wanting to give her the satisfaction as she mocked him. "If either of you are expecting to get by on your reputations then you won't last long here, back in line." Alex and Ganta both stepped back as she started to go over the rules. Alex looked around most of the inmates didn't look like first timers really it looked like Hunter and Ganta were the only ones not used to being locked up. The wardens speech was interrupted as a blond young man crashed into Ganta with a cart of boxes knocking him over.

"Oh crap, are you ok man?" The blond rushed to Gantas aid helping him up. To Hunter it looked like an honest mistake, no harm no foul. Alex however was a bit more observant of the blond and saw his hand reach into the smaller boys bag. He glanced over to Makina who was glaring at the blond.

"Cart boy, return what you stole and I'll overlook this." The young man feigned ignorance and said.

"What? N-no im taking the cart to C-block. It's my job." Alex shook his head, he knew it was never a good idea to play stupid especially not when you've been caught red handed.

"Fine. Just don't say I didn't give you a chance." And with that she unsheathed her sword and in the same motion cut him across the chest. He screamed and fell to his back. Hunters eyes widened in shock at the display of brutality.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" He called out backing away. She didn't even turn to him instead looking down on the blond man and stepping on his head pressing her heel into his temple.

"Not sure, after all it's not me who deals with the consequences that would be you lot. So get used to it because im in charge of you from this day on." After that They were lead to their cells. Alex and Hunter ended up together in a cell next to Ganta who was alone. The silence set in soon after with Alex pacing back and forth and Hunter sitting on his bunk and staring off into space. His thoughts drifted to the trial, how Max's mom looked at him like he was some kind of monster, the way his mother cried when they decided his sentence, how his father had to hold her back when they sent him away, it was all so much to take in.

"It's Hunter right?" Hunter looked up at Alex who had stopped pacing and was now leaning against the adjacent wall.

"Oh y-yeah, you're Alex then?"

"Yep, Man what're the odds they'd stick us together am I right?"

"Pretty low." Hunter said sounding nervous while trying to play it off with a laugh. Alex narrowed his eyes and said.

"Geez relax dude im not gonna bite your head off or anything."

"Im sorry it's just..." He looked down. "Im still adjusting to everything." Alex sighed and shook his head

"Do you want to end up someones footstool?"

"Wait what I don-"

"Or maybe someones bitch?" Alex interrupted. "because if you sit on your ass and pout all day thats whats gonna happen." A look of hurt appeared on Hunters face so Alex stopped for a moment before continuing. "Look you're new to this I get it, but the other people here? They aren't going to cut you a break just because you don't know what you're doing."

"So what do I do!?" Hunter snapped standing up to face Alex who smiled and said.

"First of all, this. Don't let people walk all over you." Hunter Smiled wiping away some leftover tears. "Second of all, this. Know when not to pick a fight." At this Hunter took a small step back.

"S-sorry."

"Don't be. Well we got nothing better to do so im gonna teach you everythin-" Alex was cut off as the sound of glass shattering and screaming came from the cell next to them. "The fuck?" He said before running over to the bars. "Hey what the hell is going on?" The sound of footprints could be heard as someone walked over to the bars and looked out. It was a Girl, she was an albino complete with bright red eyes, and snow white hair. She wore a white bodysuit with what looked to be red bullseyes on it. Seeing her caused Alex to see a vision of a smaller version of this girl, in his vision she wore a pink dress and looked up at him with a large toothy grin. As he saw this he also heard a melody of some sort, it reminded him of a nursery rhyme but he couldn't quite remember the words. Wait remember? How could he remember something he never heard before? His thought was interrupted as the vision spoke his name Alex. Aleeex.'

"Alex?" The girl had a look of confusion on her face that mimicked his own.

"How do you..." Her face then lit up like a small child's on christmas.

"YOU'RE BACK!" Alex's face still conveyed the same look of confusion.

"I...guess I am."

"YAY!" She exclaimed running back into the cell.

"Hey wait! who are yo-"

"Who are you talking to?" A female voice behind him asked.

"The guy next to us was attacked!" Hunter spoke up while Alex stood there staring at where she had been. He didn't understand, who was she? How did she know him? Why did he have that vision? And most importantly what did she mean when she said 'you're back'?

"There's no one in there except five-five-eight-zero."

"What!?" Alex nearly shouted.

"Yep, just him and some broken glass. Oh well it's time for construction duty anyway so that'll be cleaned by the time he's back." And with that all three were sent to do construction. Alex and Hunter stayed together but Alex seemed preoccupied and halfway through the day Alex looked to Hunter and said.

"Wait here, I gotta go find someone." So Hunter sat down and waited about five minutes before hearing a semi-familiar voice say.

"Hey there's no need to get pushy." Turning to the direction it came from he saw Alex nudging Ganta towards him.

"Hunter my boy this here-" He said wrapping his arm around Gantas neck. "Is Ganta Igarashi!" Ganta in turn waved in a shy manner.

"H-hello."

"Hey." Hunter said returning the gesture. "Im Hunter, and I guess you've met Alex." Ganta nodded still looking rather uneasy.

"Great" Alex began. "Now that introductions are out of the way I bet you're both wondering why I brought Ganta over right?"

"Yeah kind of." Hunter confirmed.

"That is one of the many questions I have asked myself today, yes." Ganta added still sounding rather down.

"Well while I was getting transported to our cell I heard a pretty juicy rumor about Ganta, that he tried to pin his crimes on-" Ganta cut him off saying.

"But I didn't ki-" Alex then returned the favor.

"Let me finish. So he tried to pin his crimes on a man in a red cloak a-" It was now Hunters turn to but in with.

"AND METAL ARMOR?"

"Yeah! How did you know?"

"Well" Alex said a bit louder. "We were attacked by the same person she ripped eleven people apart right in front of us."

"So that mean you two believe me?" Ganta said with a glimmer of hope in his eyes.

"I mean we don't have a reason not too." Hunter said. After that a small sob could be heard as Ganta rubbed his eyes trying to stop the tears.

"Th-thank you." He got out before more sobs broke up his speech. "Thank you so much!" Hunter put a hand on his shoulder and said.

"It's no problem we know how you feel."

"BOO!" At the sudden intrusion all three teens yelled out in shock as the Albino girl went into a laughing fit. "Y-you should see your faces HAHAHAHA, Shiro got you guys good!"

"OKAY THAT WAS NOT FUNNY!" Hunter said looking a little mad. Shiro all but ignored him as she turned to Alex.

"Hey Alex! Wanna help me kill Ganta?" Alex once again gave Shiro a puzzled look.

"And why would I do that? Actually now that I think about it why would you do that?"

"Because he's our friend! And friends help friends!"

"And how would that help him?" Shiro laughed at that his question before saying.

"Because he wants to die silly."

"What?" Poor Ganta yelled trying to comprehend what was happening. "Look I don't know what's going on with you but Friends don't try to kill each other!"

"So you didn't do it?" At this Ganta once again started to cry until he Yelled out.

"OF COURSE NOT, I WOULD NEVER INTENTIONALLY HURT THE PEOPLE I CARE ABOUT!" After his outburst even more tears fell out until a helmet flew into his head making him fall to the ground.

"Well well well look what we have here." Said a man with greasy slicked back hair. Behind him was a rather large man with a beard and a small man with a ponytail "It's the psycho who killed all those kids in Nagano." Stepping in front of the others Alex glared at the man and said.

"Why don't you leave the kid alone asshole?"

"And you! The uhhh Demon Of Empire or whatever."

"Yeah that's me. Now you here to start shit cause if you wanna throw down with a demon then come on im right here!" Before either man could throw a punch however Shiro walked right up to the leader and pushed him onto his ass.

"Leave Alex and Ganta alone you meanies!" As she shouted this the bearded man swung at her, however she was easily faster and dodged even getting in a good kick to his face afterwards. But then the first man had gotten up and hit her in the back of the head knocking her out. Ganta then jumped in trying to punch the man but was easily thrown to the ground. Alex then suckerpunched him in the jaw before sending a knee into his gut. But while his back as turned the man with the ponytail pulled out a knife and cut Alex down his back.

"FUCK!" He screamed falling to his knees feeling his wound. meanwhile Hunter was frozen with fear only able to watch just as the fight went down. "You're gonna pay for that." Alex growled starting to form claws. Just then however a loud bang is heard and every looks up to see debris falling the three assailants run off as Alex stood, he then looked over to Ganta and Shiro who were still on the ground and then to Hunter who still stood frozen. Alex's blood surged out from his back as tendrils launched at the three others pulling everyone to him. He then spread his arms out and formed a blood barrier between them and the debris. When the debris finally hit Alex's blood barrier started to crack under the weight. Pulling his arms into his chest he then pushed them out and with a triumphant yell the blood quickly expanded sending the debris flying. He stood there panting as Hunter and Ganta watched in awe. "You ain't killing me that easily asshole." Alex said to no one in particular before falling face first into the dirt. No longer frozen Hunter ran to his side.

"Shit man are you ok? Alex? ALEX!"

"Oh, he's just sleepy." Shiro said sitting up and rubbing her eyes.

"We need to get him to the infirmary." Hunter said trying to lift the older teen. Shiro just laughed again.

"I told you he's fine. Man you seem really worried, are you too friends." Hunter thought for a second before saying.

"Yeah, we are." Shiros smiled and held out her hand which Hunter now saw she had brown mittens on.

"Nice to meet ya, Any friend of Alex's is a friend of Shiro's!" Hunter looked puzzled but latched on to her hand. She then shook it fast and hard causing Hunter to stumble. "Well if you really think he needs to go to the place I can take him there."

"Oh really? do you need hel-" Before he could finish Shiro effortlessly picked him up and slung him over her shoulder. "I guess not..." Shiro then waved and walked off with Alex on her shoulder.

Major story Changes: In the original the trial itself was mostly glossed over, in the original Alex and Hunter did not tell Ganta about their own experiences because In the original they were not attacked by the wretched egg so there was no connection to the two events.

Alex: In the original Alex did not have a Vision the first time he saw Shiro, Alex did not Save anyone in the original he just saved himself.

Hunter: in the original Hunter was a bit more hostile to Alex, Hunter awakened his branch of sin here in a scene that was basically a rip off of Gantas awakening.
