A/N: Quick note for anyone who jumped to the latest chapter because of the old version of this story The Birds From America I would advise you to go back and reread the first eight chapters as the story has been entirely rewritten and in my opinion for the better.
Chapter 9: Scarchain
Alex sat on the bed examining his wounds, stitches, bruises, and bandages and to be frank he was getting fucked up. Minatsuki alone had given him several very long and deep wounds that would no doubt leave scars for the rest of his life. She however was unconscious with little more than a bruise on her face, A bruise he wasn't responsible for. His other fights so far haven't been much better. The scrap with Senji wasn't much of a contest and his rematch with the woman in red was entirely one sided, if Hunter and Ganta hadn't been there he very easily could have died. His win against Ostrich was hard fought and he didn't come out without a few new scars. In fact he now had gained more scars in a few days than he had over all ten years he could remember. He sighed and looked over to his shirt which was bloodstained and one rough wash away from being turned into some expensive rags.
"Hey are you ok man?" Yo asked walking over.
"You know what man, im gonna level with you." Alex said throwing his shirt on gritting his teeth the whole time. "I have never been this hurt before in my life, between your crazy ass sister, Crow, Ostrich, and the red bitch im closer to death then ever and let me tell you, It sucks." Yo sighed and rubbed the back of his head.
"Well im sorry to hear that, and I haven't forgotten about the Cast Points I just need to get my cards back." Alex smiled and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Hey man." He then looked at Yo with a dead serious face. "You have one day." Yo went stiff as Alex patted his shoulder and walked out the room.
.
Hades didn't have time to himself very often, His time was mostly spent carrying out the director's orders or making sure Tamaki didn't overstep his bounds as promoter. When he did have time to himself he usually read in his room, the book he was currently reading was one of the many classics Hagire had given him over the years as gifts or rewards. His reading was interrupted when he felt his blood begin to rush and his eyes started to glow. Tossing the book aside he ran over to his desk and pulled out a rectangular device with a screen on the top half. Turning on the device a map of Deadman Wonderland popped up as well as three dots one for him, one for the Wretched Egg, and one for Zeus. He was obviously in his room and Zeus was still being held so he then turned his attention to the Wretched Egg, Who was in the director's office.
"So that's what he meant by getting one last use out of his body." He relaxed and turned off the device and went back to his book trying to refind the page he was on. Then a realization hit him. "Wait, if he's moving on to Mockingbird then...Oh no..." He understood why it needed to happen but that in no way meant he liked it. After all Tamaki was a pawn in Hagires eyes but to Hades he was far more dangerous. And now Hades would have to pretend he worked for the mad man. "Phase two is going to take a long time isn't it?"
Hunter was just finishing up exploring and truth be told G-Block was kind of like a small vertical town. It had shops, restaurants, bars, and even a small spa. But none of that interested Hunter at the moment so he decided to do as Haru suggested and was taking the elevator to the bottom floor. He was about two floors from the bottom when the elevator stopped and opened to reveal Genkaku with Yo flung over his shoulder.
"Holy shit, Yo!" The Monk smiled and entered the elevator as it closed.
"Oh you know this guy?" Hunter tried to take a step back and he walked right into the wall as the monk turned around to select a floor then laughed. "Hey were going to the same spot, lucky me!" Hunter didn't know what to do, this man had obviously responsible for Yo's current condition but he also had Yo in his hands, If he attacked it could be a repeat of what happened with Ganta"Why you heading down here kid?" Hunter hesitated before answering.
"I'm... I'm looking for Nagi." Genkakus smile turned wolfish as the name left Hunters mouth, He then adjusted his guitar to the headstock was pointing at him.
"Owl, huh?" The headstock then split open as a barrel became visible. Genkaku then strummed the instrument causing it to fired a shot into his shoulder. Hunter was thrown back into the wall with this before falling to the ground holding his shoulder "If you're looking for him then your looking to join his little club ain't ya? Well don't worry I was actually heading there myself. Hell, I'll show you the way!" Hunter felt his hand grab at the back of his neck pulling him up and onto his feet as the elevator door opened. Genkaku the pushed him past a few doors before coming to a stop at one and opening it. Inside Hunter saw Ganta as well as two other people he had not seen before. the first was a woman with dark skin, golden eyes, and white hair. She wore a yellow overcoat, a pale tan crop top tied at her back with a green star on her left breast, a small bell around her neck, black pants, and sandals. The man was pale, had long curly dark brown hair, and brown eyes. He wore a green scarf around his neck, a white coat, black undershirt, another brown scarf around his waist, light gray pants, and geta-sandals. The room itself was a bar but not the small simple one he had found Haru in. This one was much larger with a fully stocked bar, tables along each wall and a pool table near the back of the room.
"Yo, Hunter? Who are you? What did you do to them!?" Ganta yelled at the monk who laughed and replied.
"Hey there another new face! Well if you must know I was just wondering around when I found these poor lost souls in need of guidance." He then dropped Hunter and Yo before kicking Yo to the three, Hunter tried to crawl away but was then pushed down with a foot to his temple. "But then I smelled your stench, and I couldn't even focus long enough to save these two souls. So I decided to clean up all this filth." Ganta then prepared a blood bullet saying.
"Smell this, FREAK!" Hunter was being forced to face the others so when Ganta fired his bullet and gained a look of shook right after, Hunter was just as confused. "But how? M-my branch didn't..." Ganta was then cut off as Genkaku struck him with the guitar.
"Don't worry birdies, I'll play you a song that will blow you away." Just as he was about to strum his guitar a female figure wrapped in a red tattered cloak fell from an air vent over Genkaku and with one solid kick broke the instrument in half. The monk stood still in shock before falling to his knees over the shattered instrument giving Hunter enough space to crawl over to the figure who then loudly said.
"Super-move,Ultra Chaos, Endorphin Screw, Hadouken-style, Alpha-Wave Kick!" Everyone was shocked at this with the white haired woman asking.
"Who. The fuck. Is she?" The figure then tossed her cloak aside to reveal Shiro holding a pudding.
"Ace man is on the scene!"
Alex walked to his room holding a bag of shirts. he also was now wearing another new shirt identical to the old one. He entered his room and immediately saw Rokuro sitting on his bed with a bored expression.
"Took you long enough, I've been here since the match ended." Alex sighed and tossed the bag into a corner.
"So I guess it's time to fill me in?" Rokuro cracked his neck and stood.
"Yes and no. Follow me." He then walked right past Alex who followed him to the elevator. As it fell to the bottom floor Rokuro reached into his pockets and pulled out a gun. "A gift from Genkaku." It was a silver beretta with a wooden grip panel and several dots that seemed to be turned off lights. "There's a switch under the trigger guard, press it." Alex did so and blue glowing lights switched on. They gave him an uneasy feeling as he looked the weapon over to see each side had three. "That's called worm eater, It neutralizes branch of sin, you're gonna need it for this." Alex nodded and switched the worm eater off before pushing it under his waistband and covering it with the shirt. the pair then exited the elevator and went to the same bar Hunter had been taken too. there where now seven or eight people in the bar besides Yo, Hunter, Ganta, and the two who had already been there. Rokuro then leaned over to Alex and said. "The guy in the scarf is Nagi, the woman with him is Karako. Play along." He then stepped into the room. "So are we babysitting now?" He said looking right at Ganta who clearly took offence at the remark. Nagi then stepped forward looking at Alex.
"Rokuro, it's good to see you. But I didn't expect you to bring the Hawk himself." Rokuro then looked over to Alex with a fake smile and said.
"Yeah I found him wandering about and decided to try and recruit him. He seemed pretty eager to stick it to the people in charge and that was that." Nagi looked genuinely surprised at this and turned to Alex asking.
"Oh, is that right Hawk?" Alex having a pretty good guess at what was going on smiled and answered
"Yep, I ain't looking to just lie down and take all this shit. And Rokuro tells me you aren't either." Karako then wandered over and put an arm around Alex's shoulder bringing him into the room.
"Damn right man, honestly I was thinking of dragging you here myself. We need all the help we can get right now." Nagi nodded in agreeance and said.
"With you this make two new members in one day and hopefully with Ganta we can get three" Alex was confused at that and looked around asking.
"Wait two? Who's the other one." Nagi then motioned to Hunter who was sitting down next to an injured Yo talking to him.
"I believe you too already know one another." Karako then spoke.
"Hunter may be a bit inexperienced but he seems rather eager to fight. So i'd say he's good in my book." Alex didn't like this, if Tamaki was sending two Undertakers undercover into a resistance cell then he was clearly planning on taking them out. Most likely soon. Nagi then spoke up
"Please make yourself at home." Alex nodded and the three left him alone, Karako and Nagi went to talk with Ganta while Rokuro got to work on his computer. Alex then wandered over to Hunter and Yo and sat down.
"So you went and joined without telling me man? I'm hurt." Hunter jumped at Alex's sudden appearance but then laughed and said.
"Well it kinda happened out of the blue. I was looking around G-Block when this monk came out of nowhere with Yo all bloody and attacked me!" Alex scowled at this and asked.
"Did he have long red hair and a guitar?"
"Yeah! Wait how did you know that?"
"I met the guy, he seemed alright at the time but if he did this to you and Yo then he's on my shit list." Alex then turned to Yo. "Speaking of you Yo, Do you have my money yet?" Yo rolled his eyes and reached into his pocket pulling out a card.
"Here you are. And if you're looking for more I actually have a favor to ask." Alex raised and eyebrow.
"Well let's hear it."
"Look I know you probably don't like her."
"Oh god this is about Minatsuki isn't it?" Alex groaned running a hand down his face.
"Yes, it is. Karako says I need actual medical attention which means i'm probably not going to be able to check up on her. I'm not asking you to be her friend or even be nice, just check on her, make sure she isn't hurt, and try not to kill her. Just until i'm back on my feet." Alex sighed and thought for a moment.
"How much?"
"However much is on these cards." He said pulling two more cards out of his pocket. "I don't know the exact amount but I know it's a lot."
"I mean, i'll do it but you know I hate her right? So why not literally anyone else?"
"Well honestly I don't know if Hunter could handle her, no offence." Hunter shook his head hearing this.
"Oh none taken, im with you on this."
"And to be honest i'm worried about what would happen to her if she tried something on Shiro." Alex sighed again. that was a reasonable concern, ever since Shiro had dropped kicked that robot Alex was more than a little afraid of her.
"Okay fine. But don't get mad if I cuss her out." He said taking the cards. Yo gave a genuine smile at that.
"Just try not to hurt her." Alex nodded and stood up before calling out.
"I've got the winner of this pool game." If he was going to be working with these people he may as well have fun doing it. Hunter in turn decided to talk with Nagi and sat next to him at the bar.
"Ah Hunter just the man I was about see." Hunter looked surprised at this.
"Wait you wanted to see me, why?" Nagi nodded at this.
"Well I was curious about how you heard of us."
"Haru told me to come find you if I wanted to make a difference, so I found you." Nagi looked surprised to hear this asking.
"Wait, Haru told you about me?" Now Hunter was confused.
"Yes, why?"
"Well he and I had a falling out a while ago, truth is I thought he didn't think very highly of me." Nagi then shook his head and said. "Ah but you didn't come over to be interrogated by me. What's on your mind?"
"Well um, if you don't mind me asking. Why do you need so many people, what are you planning?" Nagi turned to Hunter smiling.
"It's not just me, Karako and Rokuro also worked on this plan. But I digress, the plan itself is a full scale escape." Hunter was taken aback at this.
"That seems rather ambitious, don't you think?" Nagi shook his head again before saying.
"Not at all, in fact if I had my way we'd bring every single person with us." Their conversation was cut short when Karako yelled.
"That's fucking stupid and you know it Rokuro!" Catching everyone's attention
"No it's not, your odd of success are already well past sixty percent, ours is forty at best." Nagi then walked over and stepped in between the two.
"Guys what's going on?"
"Rokuro wants Alex to go with you and him to the elevator controls rather than help get the data outside of the prison." Alex then looked up from his bent over position over the pool table.
"Don't I get a say in this?" they both then turned at him saying.
"No!" Alex shrugged and went back to the game before Rokuro spoke.
"Look all i'm saying is you all have a pretty good chance at making it out already. while me and Nagi alone have less than fifty percent, and that much goes down to twenty at best if we run into an Undertaker." Ganta who had now wandered over had a confused look on his face and asked.
"Undertaker? Whats that?"
"You've already met their leader, the monk. They're picked from the worst of the worst of the prison population, people only in for the most heinous of crimes. In short their an army of anti-Deadmen."
"Anti-Deadmen? Oh that explains how he destroyed my branch earlier!" Hearing this everyone dropped what they were doing and gave Ganta their full attention. Alex in particular looked over at Rokuro who rolled his eyes and pulled up a video.
"If you're talking about the monk then you're gonna want to see this." The video showed Ganta's bullet being flat out dodged by Genkaku. Ganta was in shock as people started to tease asking if he was drunk or if he was embarrassed his shot was dodged so easily. Rokuro however decided to dig get under the kids skin and asked. "Really though can we trust the kid? Seeing this he's either delusional or some kind of pathological liar." Most people switched sides at that telling Rokuro to back off or at least go a little easier on him. But the damage was already done as Ganta said.
"You know what, screw this! im supposed to believe you all can pull off a jailbreak? You don't act serious enough to make breakfast!" He then picked up Yo and stormed over to the door. "Come on Shiro, let's get out of here!" He then walked out as Shiro followed before turning back and saying.
"You all better stop picking on Ganta!"
