Rumor Has It
IV/V
"Slow down, you idiot!"
"No! Get away from me you pervert!"
"Pervert!?"
Naruto didn't bother to look back at the incredulous look Minato was probably sporting. All he knew was that he needed to be as far away from the man as physically possible. Once he got to Konoha he'd fill out whatever paperwork to transfer to the fucking moon. Yes, yes, that all sounded good, he mentally nodded.
When he had regained consciousness it was literally a miracle Minato was nowhere to be found. Seeing the golden opportunity for what it was he'd stealthily and quickly gathered whatever small belongings he'd had and given his gratitude to the homeowners, albeit a bit rushed and unintelligible having sensed Minato's presence seconds away from him.
Now, while whizzing past miles of lanky conifer trees, the crisp morning air caressing and tingling his skin, Naruto was sure he'd never run so fast in his life before. Despite this, Minato was gaining distance faster than he'd anticipated.
His lungs were on fire, his heart beating wildly and unbridled against his ribcage, and his legs ached with every lurch and twist of his muscles. But he refused to stop, the memories of last night inundating his mind and successfully acting as the fuel that kept his body moving at its maximum.
Without thinking Naruto threw a cautious glance behind him and the response was immediate. His heart fluttered and then dropped all at once, blue eyes widening in awe as he saw the warm light creeping through the veil of vegetation from above and gleaming brilliantly off his flaxen mane, patches of skin radiant with an ethereal glow that made Naruto's fingers twitch.
He swallowed thickly, unknowingly allowing the sight to distract him for just a fraction of a second.
Minato's eyes narrowed, body tensing and moving gracefully through the air as he sprung rather impetuously at his sudden window of opportunity. Swiftly, almost unnoticeable to the untrained eye, his arm shifted.
Something glittered momentarily and it took Naruto all of two painstakingly slow seconds to understand where he'd fucked up. His hackles rose on their own accord, goosepimples sprung along his limbs, and a shrill ringing resounded in his ears.
A swish sounded too close to his left and he turned, catching his own terrified reflection on the shiny metal of the signature three-pronged kunai before it wizzed passed him.
Naruto felt more than saw the presence that appeared before him. He slammed into Minato's body with such force they both stumbled off the branch. Limbs entwined and locked and Naruto awaited the blunt contact with the earth that was sure to come.
But it never came.
There was a shift as they twisted through the air, their velocity dropped abruptly and they landed on the lush grass with a soft thump. Above them, the three-pronged kunai was lodged sturdily onto the bole of a tree; it's polished metal glinted almost dangerously in the streaming sunlight and Naruto couldn't help but try and zero in on the elegant kanji wrapped around its shaft.
The weight on top of him shifted momentarily.
"Naru-"
"Get off!"
Minato barely had time to get up before he was shoved, quite roughly, a good few feet away from his landing spot. Naruto was already angrily stomping off further into the woodlands, his shoulders hunched and the tips of his a bright red.
"Will you please just stop?" Minato called out, all the frustration from the minute he had woken up that morning finally expelling from his tensed nerves as he pushed forth from the ground with renewed vigor.
"Why?! So you can take advantage of me again?" Naruto threw back angrily, the familiar feel of electricity already running through his veins as it always seemed to when he was too close to…that man.
Kami, he didn't even want to think of his him as his father anymore.
His hackles rose again and he didn't hesitate in whirling around. A hand shot forth suddenly, grabbing his wrist in a bruising grip and pulling him forth almost flimsily. Never one to be out done Naruto whipped his other hand down and up, effectively releasing the hidden kunai he had strapped to his forearm and brought the sharp edge dangerously close to Minato's neck.
Minato's icy glare bored into Naruto's own unrelenting one.
They're breathing was harsh and ragged like being in close proximity to each other took a toll on both of them.
And with the roiling, red-hot heat that coiled and uncoiled restlessly in the pit of his being, Naruto couldn't help but wonder if Minato was feeling the same.
"I didn't take advantage of you…Naruto." Minato finally spoke, low enough that it was almost a whisper. One that flowed along with the cool breeze that shook the dancing tree limbs above them and tussled their untamed hair.
Naruto couldn't help the involuntary shudder that racked his spine.
Minato took a step forward and leaned in closer, lowering his head to allow his feather-soft lips to graze Naruto's ear.
"It's impossible to do that when you want it just as much as I do."
His will was faltering and the part of him he thought was forcefully buried deep was inundating in his system like overflowing channels. Minato's breath was stirring on a corporeal arousal, the radiating heat of his body washing over him and all Naruto could smell was his earthly scent and the faint muskiness from their previous activities.
"Stop this." Naruto hissed. Blue eyes blazing, he ripped his arm away from Minato's grip and turned on his heel to head in the direction where the distant smell of freshwater was tantalizing his dry mouth.
Seconds passed before he heard the quiet footsteps of his father (a shiver crawled up his spine) and they walked in silence, neither daring to break the impregnable silence that befell them.
The familiar shh-shh-shh-ing of a quaint, uphill river began to grow louder as they drew nearer and left the dense forestry behind them.
There was a slight tremble with his hands that wouldn't cease, Naruto noticed tensely, dropping to his knees rather abruptly beside the stream. He sunk them into the crystalline water and relished the way the cool liquid sluiced down his heated face.
He didn't know where Minato was and he didn't particularly care at the moment as he sat there, silently analyzing the worn-out expression on his face. I must have done some seriously messed up shit in my past life, he mused.
And so he dunked his head.
It was nice to focus on something that wasn't consequentially earth shattering. Fishes of all sizes scattered and then regained confidence and swam along his vision without a care in the world. Bubbles escaped his lips as he watched them lackadaisically.
Maybe…maybe if I just drown myself everything will go back to normal. It was a fleeting thought but it was enough to bring out his companion.
A deep chuckle rumbled in his mindscape. "I'd like to see you try!" Kurama barked uproariously.
There was a slight twitch of Naruto's eyebrow as he closed his eyes. The massive figure of the demon fox materialized before him, it's rows of sharp teeth gleaming with the curl of its mocking sneer.
"Then what the hell do you suggest I do, you overgrown squirrel!"
The sneer effectively vanished and was replaced by an annoyed countenance, crimson eyes glaring down at him with all the maliciousness the fox could muster.
"Don't compare me to a lowly rodent, you insolent brat! Don't think me so fond of you that I wouldn't eat you whole right now." Kurama growled, lowering its snout to press against the front of his puny human cage.
Naruto blinked, hands placed at his hips and looking as unfazed as ever.
A grin spread across his lips. He scratched the sides of Kurama's snout and lay atop his moist nose, hugging the fur as if the creature were just another pet.
"Aww is my wittle Kuwama lonely here? Who's a good boy!"
Kurama snapped his jaws, trying in vain to fling Naruto away from him a good several miles but the boy only held on tighter. Piercing blue eyes glared into his once the movements had ceased.
"Now, tell me what to do."
"I already told you what to do!"
Naruto blanched, "That's not an option!"
"Well it sure will be in a few days."
"Wha-"
A rough hand grabbed the back of his hair and pulled. He coughed and sputtered; gulping buckets of sweet oxygen he hadn't realized he needed while arguing with his demon.
But there was no time to gain composure when the same hand grabbed hold of his arm and threw him against a strong back.
"Hey-" he protested loudly, world spinning. There was a slice in the air millimeters from his ear and he tensed, finally sensing all the hostile chakra signatures surrounding them as seconds passed by.
"Keep your head down!" Minato shouted and Naruto recognized the rapid hand signs for the neck-breaking experience it would most likely to turn out to be if he didn't heed those words.
If time had a feeling, Naruto thought, it would feel like this. With his stomach lurching into his throat, he held tightly onto the stalwart frame of his father, an amalgamation of colors passing his vision with such a dizzying intensity it seemed as though time itself had been paused.
And then resumed all in the split of a second and Naruto was left with a pulsing in his eyes and a throbbing in his head.
Minato, it seemed, was familiar with first experiences and just held onto his legs tightly, jumping into the forestry and practically flying along the boughs.
When Naruto finally came to, he squeezed Minato's shoulders, "Let me down."
Despite the cold and calculating look that had taken over the man's face, Naruto caught the hesitancy in the way that his lips lets the faintest of frowns grace his countenance. He nodded and stopped on the bole of a tree and let him down carefully.
"I put a good distance between us, a good five miles or so, but we should still keep moving quickly."
Naruto gave a curt nod in agreement and they set a pace after setting up a couple of traps.
The consuming silence didn't even last a minute before Naruto was shifting awkwardly in his skin.
"Erm, uh, thanks again…back there. I got distracted and…well, thanks." He mumbled, averting his gaze to the passing greenery beneath him, but not before chancing a cursory glance.
Electric blue eyes were already regarding him with such a deep-seated intensity that it caused him to choke and almost trip on a stray branch.
"Distracted, huh?" He heard Minato's voice rumble almost a hairsbreadth away from his ear but Naruto knew it was only his wild imagination because the other man hadn't come any closer. Goosepimples sprouted along his arm but he ignored the sensations to stare ahead determinedly.
"It won't happen again." Naruto spoke resolutely, pretending like it wasn't taking any effort at all to hide the shaking in his voice.
Minato simply smirked.
Neither spoke again until the threat was left nearly fifty acres behind them, their subpar ninja skills doing them no justice against Naruto's finely tuned traps. Their exit had been as timely as it was surreptitious and their stay probably hadn't gone unnoticed, hence the sudden appearance of lowly ninja-turned-bandits.
With dusk already settling in the sky, Minato finally broke the silence.
"We should set up camp."
Naruto's stomach complained loudly in that moment, effectively keeping him from disagreeing.
They settled at the entrance of a cave, checking inside for any animals before setting up a fire and setting up rabbit traps for food.
Naruto was skinning one when Minato appeared next to him, watching him in resolute silence, which caused the hairs in the back of Naruto's neck to stand up.
"So… you never told me what you thought of my Hiraishin." Minato finally offered, calmly sharpening the edges of his knives to pass the time. Naruto was already on the third rabbit.
A grin split across Naruto's face at the mention of his father's signature technique, the one that was so fiercely praised and as equally feared years after his death.
"It was awesome!" Naruto blurted. "I'd always heard about it and I've never been able to actually see it, let alone actually experience it!"
He was practically vibrating in his seat. Finishing up the fourth rabbit he turned his grin to his father.
"You handled the after effects well." Minato assented; tucking away his knives and helping Naruto bring their dinner to the fire.
"Yeah? Well, it didn't feel like it. It felt like I had a million frogs jumping around in my belly." The mere remembrance of such a dizzying experience had Naruto's face turning green.
Minato laughed.
And Naruto stared, admiring the way Minato's lips stretched across his face and his cheeks obtained a faint tint of red. It was such a rare sight that he found himself burning the image in his mind.
It took a moment to realize he was still staring, and the smoldering look that was slowly taking over Minato's face when he realized it too had Naruto backing away instinctively, cheeks blushing a furious red at having been caught.
However, Minato didn't advance on him. He remained seated, turning his gaze to watch the meat cook slowly against the fire.
"How long did it take you to perfect those jutsus?" The question left him before he could stop it, but then again, Naruto had never been good at containing his curiosity. Especially when it came to his parents.
Minato blinked in surprise. He looked up at the stars twinkling overhead, almost as if the answers were hidden there.
"Hiraishin was a technique created by the Second, Tobirama-sama. I've merely added a few tweaks here and there."
"And the Rasengan?" Naruto already knew the answer but it was nothing like hearing it from his own father.
A frown appeared on Minato's face, the flame casting dancing shadows along the sharp features of his face.
"That…is nowhere near being perfected, I'm afraid." He opened his palm, pure chakra gathering in a swirl to gather at the center and form a sphere of bright and powerful energy.
Just like when Jiraiya had first showed him, Naruto's body tingled pleasantly, excitement dancing along his skin as the power called to his own chakra.
"It's been two years and the end is nowhere in sight." The ball shrunk and the chakra dispelled in every direction, disrupting the fire and almost putting it out, but the logs crackled against the heat and the flame rose up again.
Naruto looked absolutely giddy.
"There were so many questions I had for you when I found out who you were." He confessed openly, playing on the words a bit but not the meaning behind them.
"Our initial meeting didn't go as I had hoped, however." A nervous chuckle left him, his hand coming up to scratch the back of his neck nervously.
Minato seemed to perk up at the mention of their first meeting. "What do you mean 'found out who I was'?" he inquired.
Naruto grinned and stared at the fire, the brightness of it making his eyes glitter as he thought back.
"Before Jiraiya took me into the village he mentioned that I looked almost like an exact replica of his student. It was a long trip there so he told me quite a bit about you."
Minato's usually sharp and guarded features seemed to soften that even Naruto felt the warmness in his body, knowing just how much Jiraiya's guidance and unconditional love could stretch. A sinister grin spread across his face. He also knew a bit more…
"He also mentioned that you loooved reading his Icha-Icha books…"
He'd never actually seen Minato get red, but one thing was for sure, it contrasted horribly with his flaxen hair.
"I had no idea Minato-san was such a pervert." Naruto teased, completely ignoring the happening of recent events.
"You idiot! I only proof-read them!" Minato cried indignantly while standing up.
Naruto rose with him and waved his hands, "Maa maa, its alright to admit it, Minato. No judgment here."
The other took a step forward. "You just called me a pervert!" he shrilled. Naruto blinked. "Oh…that's right. Woops." He shrugged dismissively but found himself biting down a yelp when he found Minato's face inches from his own.
"What else did that man tell you?" blue eyes squinted accusatorily and Naruto took a couple of steps back.
"N-Nothing much."
Minato looked like a wolf hunting his meek prey as he strode closer, eyes glinting in the night.
Blaming his panic, Naruto weaved through familiar hand signs before he had the chance to stop himself.
"Bunshin no jutsu! Orioke no jutsu!"
Despite it being a surprise technique to throw the opponent off-guard, Naruto stood rooted to his spot as his father simply looked at the bodacious blond in front of him, wholly uninterested and it had such a resemblance to the time Naruto had done the same thing to Sasuke that he almost choked at the memory.
The older man even took it out the same way, with a fist to the head. Not knowing what to say or how to explain himself, Naruto said the first thing that came to mind.
"Okay so you're a pervert with standards."
Later, while they settled in for the night, Naruto found himself staring up at the sky teary-eyed and nursing a lump on his head, a permanent moue stuck on his face.
"Quit crying. I didn't hit you that hard."
"I blacked-out for five minutes!" he shot up from his position and instantly regretted it. "Itaiiii!" he curled back in on himself.
"You were being an idiot."
"I hate you." He sniffled, turning his back to the fire but not before throwing one last glare at the smirking face of his father.
They both fell asleep with smiles on their faces, no matter how slight.
…
…
…
Sarutobi blinked incredulously at the two men before who were standing a bit more closely together than when he last saw them, albeit somewhat hesitantly.
"You're back early!" he noted, skimming through their mission report.
"Hai, Sandaime-sama." Minato bowed and Sarutobi eyed his almost relaxed posture.
"It was nothing, Oji-sama!" Naruto swiped his thumb under the bridge of his nose, offering his signature cheeky grin. Sarutobi couldn't help but smile and wave them off.
"Get some rest you two. I'm sure your dying for a bowl of ramen, Naruto." He nodded furiously, all but ripping the door from its hinges as he ran to the only place that hadn't changed one bit.
"Two pork ramen please, Teuchi-san!" he yelled before even entering the stand. Not even a moment later a steaming bowl of his favorite noodles was settled in front of him.
"You two are one in the same." Teuchi sighed and Naruto raised an eyebrow in question as he split his chopsticks apart. Teuchi inclined his head to the left and Naruto turned, eyes settling on his mother slurping up her second bowl of ramen.
"Aaaaa, that was delicious!" she exclaimed, rubbing her stomach in soothing circles. Feeling eyes on her she turned her head and immediately her eyes brightened.
"Naruto-chan!" her smile was contagious because he found his own was threatening to split his face in half.
"Naruto I said wait up-"
And just like that his smile fell.
Minato settled himself on Naruto's other side, almost expectantly, until he realized they weren't the only two on the stools.
"Ahh, Kushina-san." Minato nodded in her direction, his posture stiff. Naruto could only watch as his mother mirrored the same stance.
Just then, another presence sat in the empty space between his mother and himself.
All I wanted was a bowl of ramen, he whimpered pathetically and he chose to ignore the rumble of laughter that echoed in his mind.
"Fugaku." Naruto greeted, a bit more timidly than what was passible but it was almost impossible to not feel the deathly aura emanating on the other side of him. The Uchiha simply raised an eyebrow, sparing the other blond a glance before turning his attention on the sole reason he was even gracing this stand with his presence.
"Training." he grunted simply.
Before Naruto could even think about responding, Minato settled a hand on his shoulder, meeting Fugaku's eyes dead-on.
"He's busy." He grit out and Fugaku settled his trademark glare on him.
"I don't recall asking you." His tone was just as biting.
Naruto was shrinking in on himself by the second. Teuchi had wisely taken a smoke-break and Kushina was staring oddly at the two men who were on the verge of battling.
"Haha, just wait until you go back and tell that Uchiha-brat that his dad has a boner for you!"
"Shut up!"
It mattered nothing that he'd said that out loud, the two men arguing only paused for a moment before-
"You heard him, get lost Uchiha."
The scowl of Fugaku's face deepened further.
"He was talking to you, Namikaze."
Out of the corner of his eye Naruto saw a wisp of crimson hair glitter in the sunlight as it swiftly made its escape. With a heavy heart, he left his own ramen behind and followed.
"Kushina-chan, wait up!" he called and she stopped mid-step, a sheepish smile adorning her beautiful face.
"Sorry, Naruto. Things got a little too heated in there."
That was certainly one way to put it, Naruto mused. He shrugged and made to continue her walk.
"I see you and Minato are getting along better now." She giggled softly, her royal blue eyes glancing at him all-knowingly. He made a face and her giggle turned into an outright laugh.
"You'll get used to him. It sure took me awhile when before we got together." she spoke airily, like it was just another day and Naruto almost tripped.
"Wait wait wait, Minato and I aren't-"
"Oh Naruto, you don't have to hide it anymore! I'm happy for you guys! Minato's liked you since he met you! No hard feelings here. I just want him to be happy." Her melancholy smile broke his heart, but the panic that set in his heart was distracting him.
"Wait, you guys were already together?" Naruto tried desperately not to screech but he was sure he looked crazed with the way some of the villagers were glancing at him surreptitiously.
Kushina gave a slight frown, "Did Minato not tell you?" she asked with a tilt of her head. His heart was racing a mile a minute, thoughts of doom and an incoming apocalyptic phenomenon giving way to his thoughts.
He had missed his chance…
"No…he didn't."
Minato had made a conscious decision to separate from his future mother. Had gone through all the steps in his mind and decided that it was best to go his separate way and pursue none other than a man. A man that was supposed to be his future son.
"Don't worry about it, Naruto! I guess Minato thought it wasn't something you should know just yet."
They had stopped walking and Kushina was growing more worried by the minute when Naruto kept silent, his appearance slowly growing a curious rubicund.
"Naruto?" she questioned softly, placing a gentle hand on his cheek. "Are you alright?"
He turned to her then, eyes frightened and the color he was gaining quickly drained from his face, leaving behind a sickly pallid complexion.
"Naruto!"
"I'm so fucked." Naruto whispered and he saw nothing else but blackness after he hit the ground.

A/N: So, if you guys hadn't noticed this story turned from three parts, to four parts, and now, to five parts. Next chapter will be the last one. I might consider making a sequel but it really just depends on the feedback you guys give.
