"are you alright?" Kristoff asked as they made there way quickly back to the castle.
"Fine" Anna said though what the woman had said stung. Not what she said about her, she couldn't care less, but what she had said about Elsa. She knew that some people in the kingdom still thought of Elsa as dangerous and as a witch but hearing it in person still hurt and concerned her.
"You can't tell Elsa about what happened" She told Kristoff.
"Are you kidding? You almost got torn apart by a mob! You think your sister the queen shouldn't know about that?" Kristoff asked.
"Which is why she can't" Anna said turning and looking into his eyes.
"If you tell her and she sends the guards down there to punish them what do you think will happen?" Anna asked. Kristoff got a contemplative look on his face which meant he was thinking about what could happen. Despite apperances her boyfriend wasn't stupid.
"We're ok, there's no need to worry Elsa" Anna said giving Kristoff her sweetest smile.
"Ok" He said and she kissed him.
"How did you manage to disarm that woman like that?" He asked her.
"I learned how to fight from the guards, the rest was dumb luck" She lied.
"Hmm, makes sense" Kristoff said. They returned to the castle and entered the hall to find Elsa pacing.
"where have you been" She asked racing forward and wrapping Anna in a hug.
"I was only gone a few hours" Anna said hugging back.
"You still ran off without any kind of guard. Who knows what could have happened to you" Elsa said and Anna heard Kristoff stifle a cough.
"Can we eat, I'm starving?" Anna asked changing the subject.
"Alright" Elsa replied. They sat down and began eating but Anna didn't have much of an appetite. All her instincts told her the situation with Ulga wasn't over.
"Anna are you alright?" Elsa asked noticing Anna playing with her food.
"Fine" She said snapping out of her thoughts and digging into her food while pushing Ulga to the back of her mind.
"I'll deal with Ulga when I have too" She thought while Kristoff stared at her until the door burst open and Commander Olaf ran in
"You highness, we have an emergency" He said.
"What is it?" Elsa asked.
"A mob has gathered outside the palace" He reported and Anna's stomach clenched as Elsa swept past them and out the door.
"Elsa wait" Anna said running to catch up.
"Elsa this may not be a good idea" Anna said almost running to keep up with the womans long graceful strides.
"how can she be so fast without looking like she's moving fast, and in those stupid heels" Anna wondered.
"What, talking to my people?" Elsa asked as the entered the main hall.
"No, trying to talk to them when their angry" Anna said as they exited the main doors to see the mob gathered, a line of the palace guard barely holding them back.
"There she is! There's the witch!" Anna saw the woman Ulga shout at the head of the mob, which roared in agreement.
"Please, what has angered you?" Elsa demanded her normally soft voice cutting through the crowd.
"I demand restitution for you killing my boy!" Ulga shouted. Elsa stepped back as if she were struck.
"What?" She asked.
"My boy, my little Allen died in the cold of the curse you set on us!" She shouted and the crowd roared again.
"I, I don't" Elsa stammered as the temperature dropped and ice began to creep out from under the queens feet.
"See, the witch is casting her curse again!" Ulga shouted and Anna saw her reach behind her back. The world slowed as Anna stepped in front of her sister as the woman brought up the pistol and fired, and Anna felt the bullet hit her in the shoulder.
"ANNA!" Elsa shouted as the guards descended on the woman, causing the crowd to surge forward. Anna felt Kristoff almost lift her off her feet as they were ushered back into the castle as the doors were closed. Kristoff slipped a bit and Anna saw that a thick coat of ice was covering the floor.
"Elsa, you need to calm down" Anna said tilting forward and grasping her older sisters hands in her own, ignoring the burning in her shoulder.
"But that woman, what she said" Elsa said tears streaming down her cheeks.
"You didn't know, how could you, and even if you did, that doesn't giver her the right to riot like this, to plunge the kingdom into chaos like this" Anna said as she felt blood run down her shoulder and arm.
"Anna, you've been shot!" Kristoff said.
"I'm fine" Anna said as Elsa's eyes widened at seeing the blooming red spot on her blouse.
"We need a doctor!" Elsa cried as Kristoff actually picked her up.
"You guys, stop, it's nothing" Anna said trying to wiggle out of the mans grip as he carried her bridal style.
"Getting shot isn't nothing!" Kristoff said as they carried her to her room, a trail of ice in their wake.
"Elsa, calm down, I'm fine" Anna said.
"You are not fine you have a bullet in you!" Elsa said as they got to her room and Kristoff laid her down on her bed.
"Would you two stop!" She almost snapped as she tried to get up only to have Kristoff hold her down by her good shoulder.
"If you don't stop being stubborn I'll put my hand on the other shoulder" He said glaring down at her, worry and love in his eyes.
"You wouldn't dare" Anna said, only to have him put his other masstive strong hand on her wounded shoulder and pushing down making her cry out as pain shot through her.
"what are you doing!" Elsa demanded angrily.
"Showing my girlfriend I'm not kidding" He said as the pain blinded her.
"OK OK!" She cried and gasped in relief when he took his hand away.
"You weren't kidding" She said as the door opened up and the doctor came walking in.
"Doctor Yohan thank goddness" Elsa said as the older man walked in, his white coat on, his salt and pepper hair neatly combed and his greying beared neatly trimmed.
"I heared the princess was shot in that terrible riot" He said walking up to Anna's bed side
"It's just a little bullet" Anna said.
"Your highness, being shot is no small matter!" The docter said putting his bag down and opening it taking out his implements.
"You won't have to take the arm will you?" Olaf asked having rushed in after the doctor ripping his own arm off in terror.
"Of course not" Anna said, and not thinking grabbed the knife and alchohol the doctor had put on her bedisde table. She ripped the arm of her blouse to expose her wound and uncorking the bottle with her teeth poured it into the wound hissing as pain seared through the wound. As the four of them watched she cut an incision along the hole and taking the forcips from the doctors frozen hand plunged them into the wound and fighting through the pain gripped the musket and pulled it out dropping both of them on the table.
"Ok, sew me up, or do I have to do that too?" Anna demanded of the doctor. Numbley the man pulled out a needle and thread as both Kristoff and Elsa watched looking green and Olaf's mouth hung open the room having completely frosted over. She sat quietly as the doctor sewed the wound shut.
"Try to keep from moving around too much for a few days so you don't tear the stitches." He explained to her softly.
"I'll try doc but I'm not excatly known for sitting still" She said and he snorted.
"Good thing you heal faster than any patient I've ever known" He said putting a bandage over the wound.
"I'll be back to change it tommorow" He said.
"Just leave it I can do it myself" Anna said rolling her eyes.
"I know you're as independent as they come, but I will be the one to change your dressings thank you very much" He said in the no non-sense attitude she remembered whenver he looked at her bruises or cuts when she was younger (both from her play and training).
"Fine" Anna said as he packed up and left, bowing to her sister on the way out.
"Well, now that that's over" Anna said getting up.
"Whoa" Kristoff said pushing her back down, with Anna trying very hard not to punch him.
"You need to rest" Elsa said.
"Elsa I'm fine" Anna said.
"Ann you've been shot!" Elsa snapped, ice bursting out from underneath her. Anna looked at her trembling sister with tears leaking out her eyes along with the ice and guilt crashed down on her.
"Stupid, being shot and wounded is nothig to you, but not to her" Anna realized.
"Elsa, I'm sorry" Anna said pushing Kristoff aside gently and opening her arms. Elsa flew into her completely forgetting abour her wounded shoulder, and Anna ignored the jolt of pain from her shoulder as Elsa sobbed quietly..
"I was so scared that I would lose you" Elsa said, and Anna tightened her grip in her sister while beating down irration.
"Does she really think I'm that fragile?" Anna thought.
"I gotta say, I knew you were tough, but digging a bullet out of your own shoulder, that's a whole nother level" Kristoff said with nothing but admiration and no little amount of awe in his voice, and Anna found herself blushing.
"Oh your shoulder" Elsa realised pushing back slightly.
"It's fine." Anna said rotating her shoulder slightly, wincing a little.
"Stop that" Elsa said putting her hand on Anna's still bare shoulder only covered by the bandage, her hand ice cold.
"Now that feels good" Anna said sighing and putting her hand on her sisters to hold it their.
"I don't know how you can be so brave?" Elsa asked. Anna blinked at her, not knowing what to say.
"Or tough" Kristoff said.
"Why, becasue I'm a "princess?" Anna asked.
"Well, umm?" Kristoff tried to respond as Anna leapt off the bed.
"Anna get back in bed!" Elsa said as she went behind her change screen.
"I'm fine. If I stay in bed I'll go nuts" Anna said.
"I promise I'll take it easy, but you have things to do, like see if that mob burned down the town" Anna said putting on a spare dress and wincing at her torn blouse before hanging it over the screen.
"Now come on" Anna said walking out of the room, the others havng no choice but to follow. Anna led them to Elsa's study and fell back pushing her sister slightly forward as Kai and Captain Olaf came walking up.
"What is the situaton?" Elsa asked, donning her mask as Queen.
"The riot was supressed and dispersed, and the guards have detained the woman responsible for instigating it." Olaf reported.
"The woman who's son died in the freeze" Elsa said and Anna put her hand in her sisters to comfort her and keep her powers from freezing the room.
"Yes" Kai said.
"Your highness, if I may, while what happened was...unfortunate, you are still the queen of this land, divinely ordained. Even if this woman has an understandable grievance you are above reproach or punishment for any damage or deaths that were the result of your actions. This woman on the other hand was a poor spinster from the lower quarter who raised a mob to threaten you and your sister, the last two of your line" Olaf said.
"We are not going to execute this woman for being angry at what happened to her child" Anna said knowing where this was going.
"No, we are going to execute her for treason, rebellion and seeking to overthrow the monarchy" Olaf replied. Anna narrowed her eyes and really looked at the man, and along with his grey hair she saw a hardness to him she didn't remember three years ago.
"I need to consider this" Elsa said and not letting go of Anna's hand almost drug her inside her study, Kristoff and Olaf (the snowman) following. Elsa shut her door and put her hands against it, frost creeping up the door. Anna stepped forward and wrapped her sister in a hug from behind.
"What do I do?" Elsa asked.
"Go and talk to her. Let Ulga see you as a person, not just the Queen or the witch." Anna said as the ice retreated.
"Will you come with me?" Elsa asked.
"You don't even have to ask" Anna said as Elsa turned to face her. It took an hour to prepare, mostly for Elsa to gather her courage, but they found themselves being led to the castle dungeons where she was placed instead of the county jail or nostrond due to her crimes.
"At least one good thing about having the gates closed was that this place was never used" Elsa said.
"Yeah, they had nostrond for that" Anna thought. She didn't know how much Elsa knew about nostrond or what other abuses the orecalcus had caused and truthfully, she was afraid to find out. While Elsa was Queen, Anna couldn't stand the thought of her pure sister knowing about the darker sides of their home. That should be Anna's job. Anna shook away the thought as they were brought to a cell where the woman Ulga was seated, her back against the wall. She looked up when she heared them approaching, and stood slowly.
"Woman, the Queen has deigned to grace you with an audience" Olaf said with a sneer.
"An audience? before my execution?" Ulga said, hatred glittering in her eyes.
"No, of course not" Elsa said.
"I merely wish to apologize for what happened to your son. I can't imagine your loss" Elsa said kindly, and the womans face went stony before she crashed into the doors of the cage, reaching for Elsa with on clawed hand causing Elsa to leap back in shock with ice crawling up the far wall.
"You rich entitled monster, you can't imagine how I feel. You have everything! all I had was my son and you stole him from me you witch!" She howled clawing at the queen who had stumbled back, ice creeping out along the floor.
"Silence woman!" Olag shouted.
"What if we gave enough money to let you go anywhere you want and start a new life?" Anna asked and the woman glared at her.
"I know that would be poor compensation for what you lost, but we could give you a chance at a new life away from here" Anna reasoned and the womans face turned uglier.
"You think money and exile to some other land can change what you took from me!" She demanded.
"I'll kill you! You hear me. No matter what it takes, or how long I will devote my life to pulling you off your throne, tying you to a stake and seeing you burn. You hear me you witch, you will burn!" Ulga shouted and turning Elsa fled.
"Your majesty!" Captain Olaf shouted and ran after her.
"WITCH! WITCH!" Olga howled after her as Anna looked on, and opening her senses saw the red glare of the womans madness, of how dangerous she was. Anna had seen that in the way she rallied the poor against them in the mob earlier. While her training and goal as an assassin was to protect the common people from those elite who would hurt them, she also had a duty to her sister who she knew was a great and fair ruler. Taking a deep breath she made her decision and turned to Captian Olaf.
"Keep her here. I have arrangments to make." Anna said and turning walked back up to the castle and found Kai standing outside her sisters room.
"Kai, I need your help" Anna said.
"But the Queen" Kai said.
"Needs her space" Anna said, even though every instinct told her to go in and comfort her sister.
"Sorry Elsa, but you need to work this out yourself, at least for now" Anna thought as she turned with Kai following.
"I need you to make some travel arrangments" Anna said.
"Your highness?" Kai asked.
"The woman in the dungeon, I want her shipped out to England and a stipend set up to keep her in the best Asylum London has" Anna said.
"That is...rather genrous" Kai said.
"Hardly, but it's better than locking her up in Nostrond forever" Anna said sitting down in Elsa's chair in her study.
"I'll bring the paperwork" Kai said. It took a few hours but Anna read over and signed the paperworkd to have Ulga transported to England and instituionalized. The process turned her stomach, being able to control the womans life like this. It was almost like something a templar would do, but it was the best option she could think of short of killing her which Anna wasn't willing to do, for many reasons. She signed the last paper and Kai went to see the orders carried out as Anna leaned her head back, closing her eyes.
"I hope I'm doing the right thing" She thought.
