Two years later...

3-2-1 happy new year! David feeds Maddie a shot of alcohol at midnight and then embraces and dips her back playfully as he covers her mouth with his in a sweet kiss. Spirits are high and she smiles and laughs as he brings her back to a standing position and they embrace in a hug.

David: (in her ear) Happy New Year Baby.

Maddie: (happy) Happy new year!

She hugs him a little tighter and then they part and move to embrace their friends around them at the NYE party - Patrice and Troy, Agnes and Bert, Richie and Chloe and others.

It's 1996 and Maddie and David, 6-year old Aidan and 5-year old Lily are all doing well...and Blue Moon is doing great. They've made so many headlines in the past couple years that there are more cases coming in than they can handle. These days, when Maddie says she doesn't want to take a case...well, David still usually talks her into it...but they don't have to because there are so many to choose from. David and Maddie are both back working full time in the office and Aidan and Lily are both at school. They also have a live in maid and nanny, Roberta, who they hired from the offices of Blue Moon.

After a couple weeks of rest and relaxation over the holidays, Maddie and David and the rest of the Blue Moon staff are back at work and busy as ever. It's Tuesday January 2nd and Maddie and David sit shoulder to shoulder in the back of a cab following another cab, which holds a guy involved in a case they're working on. David peeks over his sunglasses getting a better look at the car ahead of them.

David: where is this guy going...?

Maddie: they've been winding all over town for over an hour now, you don't think he knows he's being followed, do you?

David: I don't know. We've been keeping a pretty good distance.

Suddenly The other cab pulls over to the side of the road and lets the man out.

Maddie: (to cab driver) Pull over please...we'll get out here.

The man they're following darts down a narrow alley. David keeps his eye on him. He slips their driver some money.

David: Wait here, will ya?

Maddie starts to exit the car.

David: Maddie, you wait here too...this could be dangerous.

Maddie: I'm coming with you David.

David gives her an annoyed look as they rush down the street and carefully turn the corner to the alley. They see the man just disappear around another corner. David takes Maddie's arm.

David: let's go...

They move down the alley at a steady pace. As they come around the next corner they press their backs up against a wall to stay out of eyesight of the man as he dumps something in a trash dumpster...the man looks around, doesn't see anyone and then dashes into the back door of a nearby building.

Maddie and David follow...Maddie stops to explore the dumpster and retrieve the item, David runs after the guy, but he disappears like a ghost. David looks around a bit and heads back to where he left Maddie. He finds her near the dumpster holding a drawstring bag with two fingers. She holds it out to David.

David: he's gone… (takes the bag from Maddie.)

Maddie: Great. So, what do we do now?

David: Let's get this bag in for prints.

David and Maddie return to the office and hand the bag off to Bert Viola who runs it downtown to be printed. They meet in Maddie's office with another client who recently found out she and her twin were separated at birth and she needs Blue Moon's help in tracking her down. Maddie and David drive home together around 6:30pm and discuss the case.

Maddie: Wow…that poor woman, almost 30 years old and has an identical twin out there that she's never met.

David: I did some calling around after she left and it seems that company who put her up for adoption might have done the same to other sets of twins…even triplets.

Maddie: You mean, there might be more separated siblings out there?

David: It's very likely.

Maddie: Strange…

David: Strange but true…such is our life.

Maddie: You can say that again.

David: Strange but true…

Together: …such is our life.

Maddie: How did I know that was coming?

David: Guess you've sat next to me in this car a little too long Maddie…You're starting to read my thoughts…

Maddie gives him an ironic smile…

Maddie: Being inside David Addison's head…that would not only be strange, it'd be scary…

David: Oh, you don't know how much fun you're missing inside this noggin…

Maddie: I'll pass, thank you.

David: Well, it's yours to pick any time…

Maddie: Great…

David: Just think, you'll have hours to pick my brain when we're on the stakeout tomorrow night.

Maddie: What? Stake out duty…

David: Stake out duty…you and me Maddie, tomorrow night…they're pretty much our date nights lately…

Maddie: Can't you take Viola? I'm exhausted…

David: A date night with Viola? No…(pounds the steering wheel) No, no, no Maddie…don't make me take Viola…it's so boring…listening to him talk about Lunar modules or how he makes Agnes's night cream out of all natural products he finds around the house.

Maddie: Bert makes face cream?

David: You see? These are the mundane things I find out while sitting with Bert in a van for 8 hours…and I won't do it, Maddie…we agreed…we're partners, we work on cases together and we're doing this stakeout…together. Period. The end. Of. Story. Thank you.

Maddie: Stake out duty huh…Fine.

David: (Rubs her hand.) That's my girl.

Maddie: (thinks) Oh wait…tomorrow? Tomorrow? I totally forgot…Aidan's sleepover at school is tomorrow night and you're supposed to be one of the chaperones.

David: Ah! Great…well, I guess it's you and Bert on stakeout duty…

Maddie: Ah…Nooooo…I can't listen to Viola talk for 8 hours….(puts her hand in her face.)

David: (points at her) Ha! See!?

David and Maddie arrive home and the kids are all over them as soon as they walk in the door.

Aidan: Mom…Lily took all my colored pens and I have to do a project for school.

Lily: I didn't take them…they're mine!

David: All right guys…let us get in the door here.

Aidan: But Dad…

Lily: Dad…those pens are mine, remember, you bought them for me.

David: Inside guys, come on…

Aidan: But mom…

David: Leave your mom alone…we'll settle this later…

They stomp away towards the living room and Roberta comes around the corner and takes Maddie's coat and briefcase out of her hands.

Roberta: Let me get these for you, Mrs. Addison.

Maddie: Thanks, Roberta.

David: Oooh, something smells good – what are you cookin' up tonight B?

He puts his arm around her and they walk towards the kitchen. Maddie heads upstairs to change.

Roberta: (She loves David.) Well, I might be making one of your favorites, Chicken Pot Pie.

They enter the kitchen and she grabs a cold beer from the fridge, opens it and hands it to David.

David: Oooh, wow…wee…did I ever tell you're the best thing to happen to us?

Roberta giggles. Aidan enters the kitchen.

Aidan: Dad! I need to do my project!

David: Excuse me, Roberta…I need to solve the case of the mysterious missing markers…

Roberta: Dinner will be ready in 10 minutes.

CUT TO: 30 minutes later the Addison family are sitting around the table eating dinner.

David: (to Aidan) So, Ade, tell me about the activities planned at the sleepover tomorrow night.

Aidan: Well, we're gonna play games, eat pizza, watch a scary movie and make s'mores…

Maddie: Sounds like a regular night for you David.

He smiles and notices Maddie pushing around bits of salad around on her plate.

David: You've barely eaten anything Maddie. Have another helping of Roberta's delicious pot pie.

Maddie: Roberta's been feeding us too well...I've noticed some of my dresses are getting tight, I've gotta cut back.

David: (Chewing) You look great.

He takes her bowl and starts filling it. She stops him.

Maddie: No, really David, I'm not even hungry...

David: (loud and teasing) Madolyn Hayes...eat something...

Lily: (Gets off her chair and leans on David's arm) Her name's Maddie Addison...

David swoops her up and puts her in his lap.

David: I knew her in another life, I gotta right to call her anything I want to.

He tickles Lily, she laughs.

Maddie: I fear age is creeping in...I've heard it's harder to keep weight off in your 40s.

David: Come to the gym with me.

Maddie: Maybe we should take up a sport...play tennis or something.

David: Oooo, a tennis club...aren't we getting fancy.

Maddie: (shrugs) just an idea.

David: No...I like it...I just prefer more of a contact sport...I can think of some other ways to burn calories (winks at her.)

She smiles back at him. David turns his attention back to Lily who is slapping his cheek lightly with her hand.

Lily: can I sleep with you tonight Daddy...

David: no baby...

Lily: It's no fair, you have a sleep over with Aidan tomorrow...so why can't I tonight?

Aidan: It is fair, that's for school. If she sleeps in with you guys, I get to, too

David: Everybody's in their own beds...

Lily: When are you sleeping at my school dad?

David: Moms doing the sleepover for your class Lily.

Lily: (to Aidan) Ha! Ha ha ha. Moms sleeping at mine.

Aidan: so...I still get to sleep over with dad tomorrow and you don't...

Lily: (complains to David) it's not fair dad.

David: would you guys stop fighting...

Cut to: Friday night, David's at Aidan's school and Maddie works the stakeout with Bert for the first few hours to make sure everything's set up properly. They sit in a van marked "Pepe's Pizza Place," Maddie sits with headphones on looking out the back tinted window and Bert, wearing a pizza delivery outfit, fiddles with the equipment and babbles about boring topics.

Bert: so, as I was saying, shortly after Mt. St. Helen's erupted was the first time I traveled outside the city I was born...

Maddie: (thinking) ...and how do those two things correlate?

Viola: oh...I mean they don't...not in a real way, I just mark time in my life with major news events.

Maddie: (shakes her head and rolls her eyes.) I see...

Bert continues...Maddie flies her nails while listening for sounds of the suspect.

Sometime around 9pm Troy joins Bert to man the stakeout and Maddie heads home, exhausted.

Roberta is crocheting in her chair and Lily is rolling around in the floor in her PJs watching a show on TV, she climbs over the back of the couch to hug Maddie when she comes in.

Roberta: You ok Mrs. Addison? You look exhausted...

Maddie: I am exhausted Roberta...I'm heading straight to bed.

Looks at Lily

Maddie: and I'm taking you with me.

Lily wraps her arms around Maddie's neck, they say goodnight to Roberta and Maddie carries Lily up to her bed where they both fall asleep pretty quickly.

Sometime around 5am David and Aidan come in, they've been up all night...David puts Aidan to bed and heads into his room where he slides Lily over so he can lay next to Maddie. He curls up behind her and spoons. Maddie half wakes up. David mindlessly caresses her body, which is covered by her silky nighty.

Maddie: Hi.

David: Hi.

Maddie: how was it?

David: Great. I played space invaders most the night.

Maddie: Did Aidan have a good time?

David: He partied 'til he puked popcorn and red licorice.

Maddie: Sounds like a good time was had by all.

David: Mmmm. (Sleepy.) He caresses Maddie and something starts to dawn on him. She's more voluptuous in certain areas. He lifts his head and looks at her semi-sleeping form.

David: Maddie?

Maddie: (whispers) David...

David: When's the last time you had a period?

Maddie: (groggy) I don't know...a month ago?

David: (slides his hand over her lower belly...) a month ago...you sure?

Maddie: (thinks, waking slightly) Around thanksgiving? Two months ago…

Both thinking...

Maddie: ah. On Halloween! You said I could go as "Bloody Mary"...

David: No, that was...early October...when we talking about costumes...

Maddie: Mmmm. Ok, early October then. Why?

David: You think you might be…?

Maddie: Laughs. No.

David: you sure?

Maddie: Of course I'm sure. (Rolls over to look at him. He rubs his hand up and down her back and over her curvier ass) David, I'm 43...it's been years since we tried to have a baby...chances of me getting pregnant are very slim at this point.

David: Yeah...slim, but not impossible. You're exhausted all the time lately...(runs his hand over her boobs) and a little fuller in all the right places.

Maddie: It's age David...that's all.

David: Ok, if you say so.

Maddie: Trust me, I'd know if I were pregnant. I'd be sick as a dog.

David. Ok...

He caresses her a bit more as they fall asleep.

That weekend the Addison family mostly lays low, David cleans out the garage and Maddie sleeps a lot in-between meals and the kids as Roberta is off on the weekends. Sunday night they take the kids to their favorite pizza and play place, Fun and Fun. Maddie hates it there, but she likes watching the kids play and have fun, she snaps some pictures to keep her busy because ...David, on the other hand, flops into the ball pit...chases the kids through the tunnels and shoots hoops most of the night. When they get home they put the kids straight in the shower and to bed so they can have a little Sunday night rendezvous…something that is harder and harder to find time for these days…although their sex life is still great, and they are both satisfied…just not satisfied often enough.

The next week is busy at work and they accept two new cases. Tuesday night Maddie meets Patrice for their usual once a month tacos and margaritas. They talk about the kids and work and how their husbands drive them crazy sometimes…but Maddie cuts it short because she's still not feeling great, she can't finish her drink and isn't even really hungry. Usually on Taco Tuesday, Margarita night she is eager to get home to David and have some romance after getting a little tipsy, but tonight she just crawls in next to him and collapses. The next morning Maddie can barely buckle her dress; they drive into work together.

David: (Driving. Talking. Laughing.) …I can't believe Richie bought into that pyramid scheme…I mean, that guy really…has never learned a thing in his life…what is wrong with him?

Maddie: Oh no…how much money has he spent on this? Chloe must be beside herself.

David: Oh…well, get this…it was a $1000 buy-in, but he's made that money back and then some, that's the crazy part…it's actually working for him…he's so roped in, he's gonna start leading the meetings.

Maddie: (Facepalm) oh no…(laughs) Richie. Maybe we should join.

David: Oh, he'll be asking, trust me, I better warm pop and Stephanie too!

They laugh.

David pulls into their favorite take-out breakfast place.

David: Ok, whadda ya want…I'll run in.

Maddie: Ugg…nothing David, I couldn't eat a thing.

David: Really? This is still going on?

Maddie: Still going on…

He feels her head.

David: What do you think it is?

Maddie: It's nothing…it'll pass…it's just a mood…it's nothing.

David: Yeah…and were have I heard this before? I know when something's wrong with you…

Maddie: Maybe I will go see the doctor...I'm still just so exhausted and feel so bloated.

David: Yeah...that's what I've been saying...just go get yourself checked out. Have Agnes make you an appointment. (Takes her hand)

David: You want me to go with you?

Maddie: With me? (Thinks) no...no, I'm fine going on my own.

David: Ok...I'm just curious about the...results.

Maddie: The results? What results?

David: You know what results.

Maddie: Oh...that? You think I might be...

David: yeah...I think you might be...(Looks sideways at her) Don't you?

Maddie: I think you're going to be very disappointed David.

David: You do huh?

Maddie: Yeah...I do huh.

David: Ok...we'll see.

Maddie: Yes we will.

David: I don't get you...

Maddie: You're just figuring that out?

David: No...I mean, you think all this tiredness...and weight gain, even though you've barely been eating anything...is due to you being in your 40s...? Cause if this is you at 43 Maddie...I hate to see you at 53...63...83!

Maddie: Oh, wonderful, thank you...sorry I'm boring you, David.

David: Boring me...that's how you take that?

Maddie: Yes. That's how I take that.

David: I better quit while I'm ahead...(re-thinks) or behind.

Maddie: Way behind…

David: And yet another sign...mood swings.

Maddie: Quit speaking please.

David: Quit speaking...? Quit speaking? (Throws his hand up) Hey...go, don't go...feel better or don't...what do I care, it's not my problem.

Maddie: (Getting angry) Not your problem?

David: Not my problem...

Maddie: So, if I am what you think I am...it's not your problem...?

David: Well...no...that's not what...

Maddie: Thanks for the support, Addison...

David: Don't put words in my mouth Maddie...that would never be a problem...That would be great…hell, it'd be better than great…it'd be great great!

(Silence. He looks at her.)

David: (gives her a side look) wouldn't it be great great for you?

Maddie: (folds her arms.) well...of course. It's just, we've got two kids in school now and a business that has more cases than we can handle…starting over with another baby?

David: (softens) I'd love to have another baby.

Maddie: Well, yeah...right, sure...like you said..great great…but we...we tried for...what?

David: At least a year...

Maddie: Right...at least a year and nothing...so what would've changed?

David shrugs.

David: I don't know. All I know is it's a possibility.

Maddie: I just don't want you to be disappointed David.

Takes her small hand in his large one.

David: I'm not gonna be disappointed, just see what the doctor says, that's all. Either way, I just want you to feel better.

Maddie: I'll have Agnes call for an appointment.

David nods and accelerates towards the office.

They meet with a new client who is willing to pay a hefty reward to whoever can track down a very valuable diamond ring she lost when she threw it in the garbage and the trash was picked up, which mean sifting through piles of trash at the dump, they assign that case to Viola.

Two weeks later on a Thursday afternoon, David and Maddie leave the scene of a crime where the suspect confesses everything to them in a long monologue.

(In Car.)

Maddie: That was a really long story.

David: Yeah, who knew revenge could take so many twists n turns.

Maddie: (checks her watch) David, I've got that appointment with Dr. Camper today, you better just drive me to the clinic from here...

David: Got it. I'll just come with you then.

Maddie shrugs and nods in agreement.

Cut to: Doctor's office after the appointment.

Dr. Camper: (walks in looking at a chart after running a few tests.) You're expecting again Maddie...congratulations.

Maddie sits in absolute shock. David nudges her shoulder.

David: (Chuckles.) Told ya. (To Doctor.) All the signs were there doc…she just couldn't see them.

Maddie: Well…no…that's true. I couldn't. I guess there were some signs, but not at all like before…with my other pregnancy's, I was so sick with both.

Dr.: The symptoms can vary from pregnancy to pregnancy…perfectly normal. Plus, your body's been through it a couple of times now…you're older…lots of things can affect how your body reacts to all these changes and hormones.

Maddie: (sinking in. slowly getting excited.) Wow…pregnant? But we tried so hard before, I'd given up.

Dr.: Sometimes even in medical science we can't predict how and when these things happen, nature is a tricky thing. Judging by your measurements I'd say you're about 2 ½ - 3 months along, but we'll do a sonogram next week.

Maddie: (looks at David. Smiles.) Wow…David..a baby! (jumps up and hugs him.)

David: Babino numero tres. (He's all smiles and hugs Maddie tightly.)

Maddie: (smolders.) or bambina.

David: I'll take either!

Maddie: Si.

Cut to: Home later that night as the family eats dinner.

Roberta: Mrs. Addison, Lily's class sleepover is tomorrow night, shall I pack something for you?

Lily: Yeah, parents have to come at 4, tomorrow mom.

David and Maddie look at each.

David: You know what Lily-bug, daddy's gonna do the sleepover with you.

Lily: Why?

David: Mom's been real tired lately and she needs her rest.

Lily: But I want mom to come…

Maddie: Sorry Lily…I'll come next time, promise. Tomorrow just isn't good for mommy.

David: (to Lily) You and me kid.

David tries to high-five her, but she pushes his hand away.

Lily: (Cries.) I want mom to come…I don't want you Daddy…all my friend's moms are coming…waaaaa.

Roberta begins to clear dishes off the table and takes them into the kitchen as Lily throws a bigger fit. David picks up Lily and heads upstairs so she can cry in her room.

David: (Calls back to Maddie) and just think…soon, we'll have another one of these inflexible little creatures to deal with…maybe one who wants to spend time with dear old dad.

Maddie: Yeah…what are we thinking.

They smile at each other from across the room.

CUT TO: Maddie and David in bed that night. They inspect her stomach.

David: There's a baby bump there all right.

Maddie: Wow…I can't believe I'm already three months along…kinda nice to be a third of the way done, I've always known pretty much from day one before.

David talks to the baby bump as he rubs Maddie's growing belly.

David: Hi little peanut…we can't wait to meet you, mommy and daddy are over the moon.

Maddie: When do you think we got pregnant?

David: 2 ½ months? Where were we, what were we doing in October?

Maddie: I don't know, the holidays are a blur at this point.

David: (snaps his fingers.) Maybe the night of…

Together.

Burt and Agnes's anniversary party…

David: (finishes the thought.)… the weekend after Halloween.

Maddie: Wow, it's really been a slow couple of months if we can both pinpoint it that quickly.

David: Well, we haven't exactly been burning up the sheets lately…but I do remember that night was pretty hot.

Maddie: Well…a little wine, a hotel room, no kids. That definitely helps.

David: And look what it got us…

Together: more kids!

They laugh.

David: Well, this is such a great surprise. How exciting.

He and Maddie embrace and kiss.

Cut To: The next week, Maddie's sonogram.

Dr. Camper: So, I can confirm that you are 12 weeks today Maddie.

David and Maddie catch eyes and smile knowing they're right about when they conceived. The doctor applies gel so they can have a look at the baby on the machine. The doctor flips a switch and the screen comes up; the doctor rubs the wand around and they get images and hear sound.

Dr. Camper: Wow…what do we have here…?

David: Yeah…wow…so amazing, huh hun? (he takes Maddie's hand.) The picture is so much clearer than when you had Ade and Lil.

Maddie nods her head in agreement but can see the Dr. has something else on his mind.

Maddie: Everything ok Dr. Camper?

Dr. Camper: Yeah…yeah, everything's fine.

David rubs Maddie's arm because he can see she is a little anxious. He looks toward the Doctor.

David: All normal Doc?

Dr. Camper: Maddie, David…

The heart beats on the screen grow louder…

Dr. Camper: There are two babies in here.

David: (knowing he couldn't have heard correctly.) Come again doc?

Dr. Camper: He freezes the screen and uses his pointer to highlight two sacs holding babies on the screen.

Maddie: Two? Doctor? No…it's impossible.

Dr. Camper: It's not impossible Maddie…in fact...it's true! You're having twins!

TO BE CONTINUED…
