CHAPTER 16: DAVID'S TURN TO LIE
The scene opens as: David and Maddie have dinner with Walter and Terri.
David: (His arm around Walter) So Wally here picks up a split and I follow up with two strikes and the Harem Scarem Carpet Cleaners bowling team wins again!
David holds up Walter's arm in victory.
Walter: Ah, yeah, well, it really was just a bit of luck…
David: Luck! Luck? Don't be so modest…bowling takes skill my friend…don't underestimate yourself (slaps him on the back).
Walter: Well, I guess I have improved over the last few months.
David: I'll say…why, without you I'm willing to bet we wouldn't have enjoyed the first place prize of two pitchers of beers and them chicken wings.
Walter: It was quite satisfying…of course, two pitchers turned into...twe…
David: (interrupts.) Twi…twice as many…right…true, but between the four of us that's still only…what…
Walter: (covering)…two, three beers each….(looks at Terri) I was just happy to get home before sunrise, really.
Maddie and Terri nod knowing they are being fed a line of BS by David.
Maddie: Two or three beers before sunrise, David, is that all? If I remember correctly, you didn't make an appearance until 7 in the morning…
David: Yeah…well, that's only because it was Richie's birthday and he had to cash in on his free grand slam breakfast.
Maddie: (to Terri) His fourth child is on the way Terri and he's still out all night like he's in his twenties. Thank god Aidan takes after me…he likes to stay home…read, stay out of trouble…
David: …ok, sure, he might play it safe, but don't upset him, that kids got a set of lungs on him…and a right hook…woo, wee…(peers at Maddie) not sure where he gets that from…
Maddie: …well, not without probable cause David…his arguments seem perfectly sensible to me. Lily, on the other hand, can be unreasonable…
David: Sure, but Lily, she's got a sense of humor, I know she's got it in her to carry on the good 'ole Addison name 'o fun …
Maddie: She can pull an all-nighter, I'll give her that.
David: (checks his watch, 9:30pm.) Oh, no doubt she's just firing up the VCR as we speak.
Maddie grabs David's face...
Maddie: We know that one's yours…
She says teasingly and kisses David… they all smile and laugh.
Maddie: Well, enough of that o-so-sweet-Century City Bowling-League victory and our crazy kids…(Looks at Terri and Walter) So, how are Walter Jr. and Terri Jr. doing?
Terri touches Walters' shoulder.
Terri: Oh, they're great. They both won scholarships to the Stanford Science camp this summer, Terri won first prize in the math competition at school and Walter Jr. is working on an invention to keep food fresh for up to a week so that leftover can be distributed to homeless people…what he sees on the streets around L.A. really upsets him.
David: Aren't they 4 and 6?
Terri and Walter nod their heads happily. Maddie and David give each other a side-eye look and David changes the subject.
David: So…um, anyway, Maddie and I wanted to invite the two of you on a couples trip we have coming up to Palm Springs.
Maddie: Oh, right…right…yeah, it would be great if you two could come.
Terri: Well, that sounds like fun…when is it?
David: We're leaving next Friday.
Walter: (Makes a face.) Next Friday…hmmm, (Looks at Terri) that doesn't leave much time for planning.
Terri: Yea, that is a little short notice for us. The kids are on a schedule and we really like to stick to it. We find if unexpected things happen, it affects their sleep schedule, their eating schedule, their study schedule…their….
David: Bathroom schedule, right… Sure…sure…we get it, (Looks at Maddie again.) we keep our kids on some kind of schedule, I think…don't we Maddie?
Maddie: Schedule? Sure…they're in bed by 9pm, most nights…aren't they?
David: Sure…yeah, that's when we tell them anyway…(coughs.) Well, really? Are you sure…you can't join us? Maybe a little spontaneity?
Walter: (Takes Terri's hand.) Spontaneity? Well, the last time I was spontaneous…I, um…(gestures to Maddie and David) met some great people…but I prefer the beaten path…security…knowing…
Terri: Yes, I agree, there is so much comfort in knowing what is coming next in life. So, next time, give us a couple months' notice and we can plan for the trip, prepare the children, and join then, it'll be easier on all of us.
Maddie and David: Right…sure.
They look at each other and shrug.
Terri: So, where will your kids be during this couples trip?
David and Maddie look at each other.
Maddie: Well…we're not quite sure…we were waiting to see who was coming with us.
David: Agnes and Bert might be available…
Maddie: Mrs. D and Stan…although, they are getting older, I hate to wear them out.
Walter: Well, you know we are happy to take them any time. Walter and Terri Jr. love when Aidan and Lily are around, they get a real kick out of them…Terri, hun, what do you think?
Terri: Of course! You are like family to us…our home is your home. They are welcome any time.
Maddie: Well, thank you so much for the offer…we'll discuss our options.
CUT TO: Maddie and David in the car on the drive home.
David: Oh…wow…remember that talk we had about screwing up the kids? We're doomed Maddie.
Maddie: And you thought I was structured…
David: Walter and Terri Jr. are going to be some rocket scientists and our kids are going to be serving them drinks aboard their private jet…
Maddie: Oh…well…I don't think that'll be the case David…our kids do fine…remember, Aidan won that…spelling bee…
David: He spelled Apple…
Maddie: …and Lily….she…she was the first one to tie her shoes in kindergarten…
David: Great, a master at knot tying…
They laugh..
Maddie: Oh, come on, they're amazing…
David: Well, they do have our bone structure…
Maddie: They can talk to anyone…
David: They have quick wits…
Maddie: They banter great…
David: They found that stash of old coins that was buried in the field behind the house…
Look at each other and nod half-heartedly…
Together: We'll leave Blue Moon to them…
David takes Maddie's hand and nods towards her stomach.
David: I'm sure our new little dividends will be at the Stanford Summer camp by the time they're 3.
They chuckle and accelerate towards home.
CUT TO: The next morning at breakfast.
Aidan: But I don't want to go to Aunt Terri's and Uncle Walter's for the weekend…
Lily: Me either, they don't watch TV…
Aidan: And they don't let us swim without a life vest…
Lily: and they make us go to bed when it's still light outside…
Aidan: and they make us eat all our vegetables…
Lily: and they…
David: Ok, ok, enough…we get it, they're perfect.
Maddie: They just love you guys so much, they want you to be safe and healthy…
Lily and Aidan: They're boring!
David: This ain't no democracy, ok, mom and dad will decide where you're gonna stay.
Maddie: That's right…and it's either there or with Mrs. D and Stan…
Aidan and Lily: Nooo…nooo mom, they're too old…
David: …or with Uncle Bert and Aunt Agnes…
Aidan and Lily: Yeah! Yeah! Uncle Bert and Aunt Agnes…they let us do anything…
Lily: They teach us rhyming words and Uncle Bert sets up spy games…
Aidan: Yeah…and on Saturday they eat dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner.
David: Steak and potatoes for breakfast? Man, that's my kinda livin'.
Lily: Why can't we stay here with Ms. Roberta mom?
Maddie: Roberta isn't going to be here, she's going to visit her sister.
Aidan: Can't you guys just stay home…it's way more fun when you're here…
Maddie and David: (Smile at each other.) Awwww.
Tickles Aidan's neck; Aidan squirms.
David: Gotta way with words, just like his old Dad.
Aidan: …plus I like sleeping in my own bed.
Maddie and David shrug...
David: Another good reason, I like the first one better (Moves around to put his arm around Maddie)…but, no we can't stay here…mom and dad are leaving for the weekend, we need a little alone time before the babies are born.
Lily: Why do you need alone time?
David playfully kisses Maddie's neck and pats her butt and then starts clearing dishes.
Aidan: (Aidan hides his eyes after seeing his parents affection.) Oooo, you guys are weird.
David: Just figuring that out, huh?
Aidan: You're always kissing and touching.
David: (teases, leans his face close to Aidan's.) Yeah, well, that's why we gotta leave town, so I can kiss her without some kid telling us we're strange...
Winks at Maddie.
Aidan: come on, dad...
David: (Ruffles Aidan's hair.) We like each other, what's weird about that?
Aidan: I never see my friend's parents do that.
Lily: Please don't make more babies…
Maddie: You can't make more babies when you're already pregnant Lily.
David: Yeah, the butterflies are already delivering two eggs to us...we won't order more.
Maddie looks at him and rolls her eyes.
Lily: That's not true Daddy, mom already told me the truth about how you get a baby.
David: (Catches Maddie's eye.) The truths out there, huh?
Maddie nods and shrugs.
Aidan: Why do we need more babies?
Maddie: We need more babies because we love you guys so much…we want to grow our family, give you another brother and sister.
Lily: (Feels her mom's belly.) Can I feel them kick mom?
Maddie: I don't know, let's see.
Maddie puts her hand over Lily's and they wait for the babies to kick.
Lily: I can't wait to hold the new babies…what about you Ade?
Aidan: I don't know, I just don't want to go to Uncle Walter and Aunt Terri's house next weekend.
Maddie: Well…I'll talk to Agnes tomorrow Aidan.
CUT TO: Monday morning at Blue Moon.
Agnes: Oooh, I'm sorry Ms. Hayes-Addison…but since everyone is taking a long weekend, Herbert and I are taking Nola and Zola to see the world's biggest ball of string, biggest block of cheese, biggest rock, biggest chair, biggest…
She goes on and Maddie just nods with a fake smile on her face waiting for her to stop naming all the biggest things they're going to see.
Maddie: Uh-uh…so, you're going to be gone.
Agnes: Yup.
Maddie: Got it. Ok, no problem…thank you anyway Agnes.
Agnes: Maybe next time! We always love having them.
Maddie smiles and nods. Maddie heads into her office and calls Terri to confirm the kids can stay with them.
CUT TO: The next Friday morning, David throws their suitcases in the back of the BMW, they both slip on their sunglasses and they are on their way to their weekend in Palm Springs with some other couple friends including Patrice and Troy, Richie and Chloe, Claire and Bill and a few other couples they hadn't met yet, including Troy's brother and his wife and Chloe's cousin and her boyfriend. The kids are with Terri and Walter and are promised a night at FUN & FUN if they behave and do everything they're told, though they're still not happy about. When Maddie and David get to the swanky resort they change into their swimsuits and hang out by the pool with everyone for a few hours soaking in some sun. But after that, they really don't spend much time with any of them because they basically spend the whole three days in their hotel suite satiating Maddie's pregnancy needs, which alternate between room service to satisfy food cravings and the many things David can do to her satisfy her in other ways. All of the couples take turns knocking and pounding on their door trying to get them to come out and join them, but Maddie and David are quite content in their room alone, sleeping, eating, making love and bantering the way they do. Sunday night, they join the couples for the last dinner and they all applaud their appearance. No one is too bothered because they've all had a great weekend and were busy catching up with their other friends, plus they know Maddie and David have been apart a lot lately and will soon have less time together…so they all just enjoy the last night and head back to the L.A. area early Monday.
CUT TO: Two days after they return from their trip, Maddie wakes up to hear David throwing up in the bathroom, she rushes to the door.
Maddie: (through the door.) David, what is going on…?
David: (Sounds weak.) I don't know…I think maybe we had so much sex in Palm Springs, that I'm pregnant now…
Maddie: (rolls her eyes.) Oh, David…
Sound of David throwing up. Aidan calls
Aidan: Mom…moooooommmmmmmm!
Maddie goes to tend to the kids. She gets them dressed and sends them downstairs to eat breakfast with Roberta. When she makes her way back to the bedroom, David is lying on the bed in the fetal position. Maddie feels his head.
Maddie: Oh David, your burning up.
David: Yeah, but I'm freezing cold…can you turn on the heater?
Maddie: David, it's 85 degrees outside.
She helps him under the covers.
Maddie: We've got a client meeting in an hour, I guess you'll have to miss it.
David: No…no, I'll be ok…just give me a minute.
Maddie hears Lily and Aidan fighting downstairs and goes to mediate. When she comes back upstairs David is sound asleep.
Maddie: Roberta, Mr. Addison isn't feeling well this morning, so he's going to stay in bed.
Roberta: Oh, no…what's wrong with him?
Maddie: He's been throwing up all morning and has a fever.
Lily: Can I go see Daddy, mom?
Maddie: No baby, he's sleeping.
Lily: I'll just go give him a kiss then.
Maddie: No Lily, he's sick, I don't want you near him right now…
Lily: (Whines) I want to see dad…why can't I?
Maddie: (To Roberta) Anyway, don't worry about him…I'll come home at noon to check on him, I just wanted to let you know he'll be home.
Roberta: Sure…thanks…and if there is anything he needs, just let me know.
Maddie: Thanks Roberta.
In the meantime, Lily is halfway up the stairs…
Maddie: (Calls) Lily!
Lily: I'm going to give dad a kiss goodbye…
Maddie: Lily, get down here this instant! He's sleeping…
Lily: Why!? No…I'll be quiet…
Maddie: Lily…don't make me tell you again…if you enter that room you are going to be in big trouble.
Lily continues up.
Maddie: (Standing at the bottom of the stairs.) If you make me chase you up those stairs in my condition Lily…
Lily and Maddie go ten rounds until Lily ends up opening the door, but not going inside and Maddie has to physically go upstairs and bring her down.
Maddie: Roberta, I'll take the kids to school today…I think Lily and I need to have a little chat.
Lily throws a fit all the way to school and Maddie ends up having to talk to her in the car until she is calm enough to go in, which makes Maddie late for her client meeting.
CUT TO: Blue Moon; when Maddie arrives the client is already waiting for her in her office.
Maddie: Mr. Green, thank you so much for waiting, I've had a bit of a hectic morning.
Mr. Green stands to greet Maddie and they shake hands; Maddie gestures for him to sit and moves behind her desk.
Mr. Green: No problem Mrs. Hayes-Addison, I've had a few of those myself…(looks around.) Shall we wait for your partner?
Maddie: Oh…no, no…I'm sorry, he's out sick today.
Mr. Green: Oh, I'm sorry to hear, all right, I'll get right to it then.
Maddie picks up a pencil.
Maddie: Please, go right ahead.
Mr. Green: My wife is deathly ill.
Maddie's face grows serious.
Mr. Green: We've been dealing with her illness for a couple of months now. Seen doctors in three different states, tried alternative treatments, even tried the power of prayer…nothing has seemed to work and, until now, modern medicine hasn't been able to help her.
Maddie: Until now?
Mr. Green: We've recently found a cure.
Maddie: (Sits back) Well, that's great!
Mr. Green: Only problem is, we can't afford it.
Maddie: I see…so, how can we help? Shouldn't you be seeing a bank about a loan or asking a friend or family member to lend you the money?
Mr. Green: I'd never be able to get this kind of loan and I don't know anyone who could loan me the amount of money I need.
Maddie: I'm not sure I understand. Where is this cure and how much are we talking here?
Mr. Green: Ms. Hayes-Add….
Maddie: Call me Mrs. Addison…please….
Mr. Green: Mrs. Addison, the man who had developed the serum as a cure for her disease wants three million dollars for it.
Maddie: Three million dollars!?
Mr. Green: Highway robbery Mrs. Addison…but this man feels he has a right to charge anything he wants for his invention.
Maddie: Yes, but, this is someone's life we're talking about…doesn't he feel any responsibility?
Mr. Green: Apparently not. His take on it is…how much is one's life worth to them? What are they willing to pay for it?
Maddie: Well, that's very sad. But, I still don't see how we can help.
Mr. Green: I want you to investigate the man…I want you to infiltrate his laboratory and discover his formula for the cure. I have a man who will recreate it for me at a fraction of the price. I've got to get this cure for my wife Mrs. Addison.
Maddie: I understand Mr. Green…and I sympathize with you…but there are such things as patents and propriety, we can't just go in and steal this man's formula…even if it is life and death.
Mr. Green: A friend of mine used your service in the past…they said you were willing to go above and beyond…I need someone like that right now…I need your agency to help me.
Maddie: But Mr. Green…this is not what we do…we're not in the business of infiltrating industry and stealing ideas.
Mr. Green: I'm a desperate man Mrs. Addison, and desperate people do desperate things…how far would you go to save your loved ones (gestures to her pregnant belly)…your husband?
Maddie's face flashes a pained expression. Mr. Green stands. Maddie stands.
Maddie: I'm sorry Mr. Green, about everything.
Mr. Green: I want you to think about it. Talk to your partner…maybe you can find some way…you've got quite a good reputation, I'd feel confident in your agency's hands, please, let me know by tomorrow. I'll see myself out.
Mr. Green exits Maddie's office and Maddie slumps down into her chair aggravated, thinking about how much she feels for Mr. Green and his wife, but they can't take this case…can they? She didn't see a way! This is when she needs David around because somehow he always had another take on everything…he could always see a way to accept the case and make the best out of it. But without him here, she was at a loss…they weren't thieves, they weren't going to break and enter into the laboratory to find answers! And the owner of the formula surely wasn't going to listen to them if he can look in the face of a dying woman and choose fortune over saving a life. No, this was definitely one case she would have to turn down…she thinks…but if David is feeling better at lunch she'll run it by him just to be sure.
After Mr. Green, Maddie has another client. A woman, Lila, who is estranged from her daughter and wants Blue Moon's help in tracking her daughter down to hopefully reconcile; Maddie accepts the case and works for about an hour doing leg work to begin tracking down the daughter. By 11:30, Maddie's exhausted…all these cases were hitting too close to home as usual. She lets Agnes know she is going home for an early lunch to check on David and to call her there if anything comes up.
CUT TO: Home.
Maddie: Hi Roberta!
Roberta: Hi Mrs. Addison.
Maddie: Has David been down at all?
Roberta: No…I haven't seen him at all, but I was out running errands for a while…I put your dry cleaning in the front closet by the way.
Maddie: Oh, great…thanks.
Maddie heads upstairs to check on David. He's under three blankets, but he's shivering. Maddie shakes him awake.
David: (Wakes up slowly.) …but I thought it was a snow day, mom?
Maddie: (Feels his forehead.) David…it's Maddie…you're hot.
David: (Feebly) Thanks, honey…I think you're sexy too…but this isn't really the time…
Maddie: No David…your fever, it's higher than this morning. I'm going to get you some ibuprofen…when's the last time you threw up?
David: Probably Richie's bachelor party…they made them drinks pretty strong…
Maddie: Today David…this morning…have you thrown up again since this morning…?
David: Oh…just once…and I'm sorry…I tried like hell to get to the bathroom, but made a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in your closet…
Maddie's face cringes and looks towards her closet.
David: (ruffles his hair.) I owe you a new pair of pumps…and maybe a dress or two.
David lays on the bed with his eyes closed looking helpless. Maddie touches his cheek.
Maddie: (Sympathetically.) Oh, baby. Alright, let me get you something for the fever and see if you can keep some food down.
Over the next couple hours, Roberta helps Maddie clean everything up and they make a new pile for the dry cleaners and throw out the soiled shoes. Maddie tends to David, making him feel better and more comfortable. Once he's had some medicine and broth and is back asleep Maddie returns to work. She isn't able to talk to David about Mr. Green's case because he's too out of it but she makes some great progress on Lila's case. By late afternoon she'd tracked down the woman's daughter, Samantha and even drives out to Pasadena to meet with her. She learns that Lila is a woman who had many issues with alcohol, drugs, and men when Samantha was a child and she was pretty much pushed out of her mother's home by 16 and since that time she has done her best to stay untraceable…she is not even sure how Blue Moon tracked her down. However, she is happy to learn that her mother is sober and wants to make amends and it's something she's willing to work towards. Maddie stops at a pay phone on her way home and calls Lila to update her on the situation.
CUT TO: Home.
When Maddie gets home just after 7pm she finds Roberta cleaning up from dinner. Lily has every barbie doll and accessory out and spread around the floor and Aidan is shouting at a hunched over-pale-white-David who shouldn't be out of bed.
David: (To Maddie) Oh, great, there you are. This kid is trying to blame me for his homework not being done.
Maddie: Aidan, what is going on?
Aidan: Mom, I told Dad last week I needed it for my project…
Together
David: I never heard a thing about it…
Maddie: Needed what...?
Aidan: Dad, I told you when you picked me up last week…
She steps in between them…
Maddie: David, what are you doing out of bed? Aidan, why are you talking to your father like this…can't you see he's sick?
Together:
Aidan: Dad knew last week that I needed poster paper for my project mom, but he didn't get it.
David: It's 7 o'clock at night, and he doesn't have the poster board for his project…that is due…tomorrow…
Maddie: Ok…alright…Aidan…it's your project, it's your responsibility…you knew yesterday, we didn't have it, right?
Aidan: But mom…
Aidan goes on and Maddie puts one hand around David's waist and one hand on his cheeks and head.
Maddie: You're still pretty hot…
David: (still annoyed at Aidan.) Yeah, I don't feel well…I just got up to deal with this kid…
Maddie: (Chuckles.) No, saucy comeback Addison? You are sick…
David: (scratches his head with one finger and holds his stomach.) Yea, I'm sorry…I've got to go back up and lie down…can you handle this?
Maddie: (kisses the side of his head.) I've never seen you this sick David…maybe you should go to the doctor.
David: I just want get back in bed, I'll be better in the morning.
David makes his way upstairs, throwing a two-fingered kiss to Lily along the way.
Lily: Love you daddy.
David: Clean all of that up Lily.
Lily: I will.
Maddie: (Takes her car keys back out of her purse.) Ok, Aidan…let's go get your poster board.
Aidan: Dad knew mom…
Maddie: Enough…not another word…not another syllable.
Aidan follows Maddie out to the car and they run out to get what he needs for his project. By the time they get back and Aidan does his project, Lily cleans up her barbies and everyone gets showered, changed and in bed, it is 11pm. Maddie is exhausted. David wakes up slightly as she climbs in bed.
David: Maddie... (He wraps an arm around her.)
Maddie: Hi. How are you feeling?
David: Not so good. Are you sure you wanna sleep in here tonight? I don't want you catching whatever I got…
Maddie: I'm pretty sure I've already been exposed to whatever you got.
David rubs his hand over her pregnant belly.
David: I'm sorry, bad timing. How are you feeling…how are my bambinos?
Maddie runs her hands over her 6-month pregnant belly.
Maddie: I feel fine, it was just a long day.
David: Tell me about it.
Maddie: Well, actually, there is a case I'd like to discuss with you…
David: Ok, shoot…
Maddie starts to explain about the case, but she's not far into the story when she hears David snoring. She pulls up the blanket around him and falls asleep. Then, at 3:30am she is awakened to the sound of David getting sick in the bathroom again, but this time it's even worse cause he's got nothing in his stomach so it's just the horrible sound of him dry-heaving over and over. Maddie rushes to the bathroom, David is hugging the toilet looking miserable.
Maddie: David, I'm taking you to the emergency room.
David: (Feeble) No…Maddie, I don't have the strength to leave this spot…just kill me, put me out of my misery…
Maddie: No…no, you need to see a doctor, get dressed.
Maddie knocks on Roberta's door and lets her know she and David are going to the hospital because he's still sick. Roberta assures her she'll take care of anything around there until they get back. Maddie grabs some supplies and helps David finish pulling on his sweatpants and a t-shirt since he's moving in slow motion, and then down the stairs and into the car. They wait in the emergency room for over 2 hours while David pukes into a plastic bag. When they finally get to see the doctor they run some tests and find that David has Bacterial gastroenteritis and needs antibiotics.
When they get home it's after 7am and Roberta is just getting the kids breakfast. They come running to the door.
Lily and Aidan: Mom…dad…dad…mom…are you ok Dad? What happened? Where did you go?
David leans down and gives them both a hug and kiss.
David: I love you guys.
Aidan and Lily: Love you dad.
Maddie: Lily, why don't you help your dad upstairs. I'll be up soon to check on you, David.
David gives her the "OK" sign and heads upstairs, Lily holds his hand and helps him climb stair by stair. Maddie enters the kitchen where Roberta is making her eggs.
Roberta: I'm fixing you something to eat Mrs. Addison and then you should go get some sleep.
Maddie: (Butters toast) Unfortunately I have to go into work this morning, we've got back-to-back meetings.
Roberta: Can't everything just wait until Monday?
Maddie: Not really Roberta, I wish it could, but we've got so much going on if David and I are out of the office things really get backed up. I've got to hold down the fort right now.
Robert: Well, just make sure you don't overdo it…you're getting along in your pregnancy now.
Maddie: I know, it's a lot, but I feel fine…really I do.
Roberta hands her a plate of scrambled eggs and Maddie touches her arm.
Maddie: Thank you for being so concerned and for all your help around here.
Roberta: Of course! I'm happy to help, I love it here, you guys are great.
Maddie: Well, we love having you here, and I know things are going to get even more hectic when the babies arrive, but we do hope you'll stay…we will be adjusting your pay with any extra duties, you need to take on.
Roberta: Oh, plan on being here, you can count on me.
Maddie smiles and nods and eats her breakfast. Lily enters.
Lily: Dad's asleep mom.
Maddie: Ok, thanks for helping out Lily-bug.
CUT TO: Maddie heads into Blue Moon and works all morning and afternoon seeing clients whose cases they are working on. She receives updates from Viola and Agnes regarding ongoing cases and cases they are closing out. She also balances the books before she leaves for the weekend at 2pm, when she drags her weary bones home, she finds David feeling better now that his anti-biotics have kicked in.
Maddie: (Enters bedroom.) Hi, how's the patient?
David: (Sitting up, flipping through the channels on TV.) Just waiting for my nurse to give me a sponge bath… (Smirks.)
Maddie: (Approaches and feels his head.) There's that banter I've been missing. Well, your temperature is down.
Wraps his hand around her and rests it on her behind.
David: I know how you can make me feel all feverish again.
Maddie: Amazing…two doses of antibiotics and you're back to your old crude self…
David: (Smiles.) The miracles of modern science, huh?
Maddie pets his head and scruffy beard.
Maddie: You really should take a shower, David, you look awful.
David: Yea, I was thinking the same thing, my teeth feel like they're wearing socks.
Maddie: Alright, let's get you cleaned up…I'll start the shower.
Maddie gets the shower hot and steamy and helps a still-weak David in and leaves him to brush, lather, scrub and rinse. While he showers, Maddie changes the bed sheets and heads downstairs to heat up more broth and make him toast. When he's done with his shower, David puts on the fresh clothes Maddie left out for him and climbs into the fresh sheets. After he's done eating she sits on the bed with him and they chat.
David: Thanks for taking such good care of me Mad…I feel like a new man after that shower and a little food.
Maddie: (touches his ear and scratches his clean, scruffy beard.) You're welcome…I'm just glad you're on the upswing.
David: So, tell me about work.
Maddie goes on to tell him about some of the cases including Mr. Green's case and tells him all the reason's she's going to call Mr. Green now and tell him they can't take the case.
David: Ho, ho, hold on just a minute partner…we're not turning down this case…this is a great case…we can't just sit back and let this woman die…ours is not to reason why or why not? Ours is to find solutions…put me on the phone with Mr. Green…get Viola to…
Maddie relaxes and smiles inside as she listens to David reason with the how and why of the case - while she gives counter arguments as to why she doesn't see any way to get the formula to the antidote legally or make the man come to his senses and they go ten rounds, but of course, they take the case.
CUT TO: 2 Weeks later at home.
Maddie is downstairs getting the kids settled on the couch with a movie, Roberta is watching them for the evening because Maddie and David are going to the L.A. Investigators Ball. Maddie is dressed to the nines in a silver sequenced maternity dress, her hair done up and heavier make-up than usual on her face. David comes down the stairs dressed in a tux, freshly shaved, hair ruffled, face looking healthier than ever, body looking long, lean and muscular in all the right places.
Lily and Aidan: Woooo, Dad…wow, you look so handsome.
David: Thank you kids…(Puts his arm around a stunning Maddie; cocky) and you're welcome for us sharing this magnificent gene-pool.
They roll their eyes cause they've heard it all before.
David: Well, doesn't your mother look gorgeous?
Maddie and David catch eyes and smolder.
Aidan and Lily: Yeah, we already told her dad.
David: (Points at them) Be good tonight.
Aidan: We are, we're just going to watch Forrest Gump again.
David ruffles both of their heads of hair just as the limo honks for them outside.
Cut to: Maddie and David dancing at the ball…looking gorgeous, attracting attention.
Merve, a fellow investigator, dances by with his wife.
Merve: (Teasing.) Look at the Addison's, making us all look bad on the dance floor again…
Addison: (Teasing back) It's not just on the dance floor…have you compared your number of solved cases to ours for the past year, Merve?
Lynn and Dan, another couple dance by.
Lynn: Looking great Maddie, when are you due?
Maddie: (Smiles.) July…thank you!
David: (cocky.) Yes, that's right…we're adding more beautiful offspring to the world…you don't have to thank us now…
They chuckle and dance on…
Maddie: (Nudges him) Easy David…
Looks into her eyes and dances her in a circle gently.
David: What, it's true…look at you…how beautiful you are…me, I'm just a poor slob…it's you they get their good looks from…
Maddie smiles.
Maddie: Save some of this…we'll use it to spray on the lawn next summer…
David laughs, puts his cheek close to Maddie's and they dance.
David: Won't be long now…
Maddie: Nope, three months.
David: You ready for this?
Maddie: No…is anyone, ever?
The dance ends and David and Maddie make their way over to their table to enjoy dinner and a rare evening out.
TO BE CONTINUED.
