Finally the concert. What do you think?
When Jake arrives at the recording booth, he hears Mia singing her newest song from what he can tell and somehow the lyrics speak to him and he gets an idea. He knocks on the windows lightly and when Mia spots him he opens the mic: "Wanna perform this as a duet tonight?"
The party is in full swing. Mia is performing great and Peyton is really proud of her. In just a minute she has to go up on stage and introduce Jake. She hadn't the chance to talk to him the whole day. If she didn't know any better she would think he was avoiding her. She thinks back to Lucas and her fantasy life tother and it was funny they both said if they had gotten married back then they both probably would have ended up having affairs. It was in a way their own macabre way of putting their romantic relationship to rest and solidify their friendship. She smiles and pushes off of the counter when Mia suddenly goes off script: "And now ladies and gentlemen I have one more song prepared for you. A duet with tonight's main act. He kindly offered to sing with me, so please welcome on the stage my friend Jake."
Peyton stops dead in her tracks. She is confused and then the first accords fly to her ear and she needs to lean against the wall.
Won't be so easy
This time to hurt me
You can try
And this time oh baby
There are no tears left here to dry
If you think you can wound me like before
If you think you can do that anymore
Won't get too far
No!
You can't break a broken heart
She can't help but feel like crap when she hears Jake sing those lines. This is how Haley finds her. "When did this happen? This is great. But who will release the song?" Peyton tries to wipe away the single tear that ran across her face before turning to her friend. "I don't know. Mia wrote it, so I'd opt for her to release it. It worked well as a duet and a lead into Jakes show." "But I am guessing you didn't cry because of Mia right now since you just said you had no idea they worked on this together." "Haley, don't. Okay, just don't. I need to concentrate and see what the crowd likes from this set." The brunette holds up her hands and says softly: "I won't but if you need to talk, I am over there with the others. They will all love him and his songs. Don't worry." Haley squeezes Peyton's hand one more time for reassurance and then leaves her friend back to her own devices. When she arrives back at her table she notices all of their friends staring in the direction of Peyton and not really paying attention to the stage. She knows "Someday" will be the last song for Jake but has a feeling that the other lyrics will also resonate with Peyton a lot more after this first shock. Could it be that her friend rediscovered her feelings over the last few weeks playing a couple for the paparazzi? When the first lyrics start to flow over to her table she says: "Enough staring guys. We are here to support Jake!" and demonstratively turns towards the stage. The room is swinging and she knows it was the best way to start off the set with "Galway Girl". The Irish undertones of the song made it interesting for the crowd and they wanted more. And to top it off Brooke leans over. "Thank god that man was not a celibate for the last couple of years." That makes them laugh and the guys look at them like they are crazy. If Haley was totally honest with herself she felt the same but was not sure if that was a good thing. After another upbeat number, she knew Jake would switch back to the more laid back songs.
I'm gonna pick up the pieces
And build a Lego house
When things go wrong we can knock it down
My three words have two meanings
There's one thing on my mind, it's all for you
With the start of Lego House, she knows she has to get backstage to get ready for the grand finale. Not even Nathan knows this is going to happen. Knowing which song she will sing with Jake she makes the split-second decision to grab his hand and drag her husband with her to the green room.
Nathan looks at his wife slightly confused. "What is going on Hales? Is there something wrong?" "Not exactly but I am going on stage myself tonight to close the night. It was going to be a surprise but the duet I will be singing with Jake is "When the stars go blue" so I wanted to let you know beforehand." Haley stopped talking when she saw Nathan smile at her. It was now her turn to be confused. "It's okay. Peyton actually called me and I have a surprise for you." He dugs around in his front pocket and pulls out a blue velvet box. Out of said box, he pulls a beautiful necklace with a blue star-shaped pendant. Haley is speechless and just lets him put the necklace on her. When they face each other again she only has time to give him a quick kiss and whisper: "Thank you." in his ear before she has to hurry and get her mic.
On her way to the stage, she passes Peyton again and by now the blonde has tears streaming down her face since Jake is closing with Someday. She smiles at her friend and when she sees Brooke coming over she nods at the other brunette. They all know how much that song effects Peyton but this crying mess was still surprising.
The crowd cheers and Hayley knows Jakes album will be a huge success. Now if only the private lives of all her friends would be so much less complicated.
Brooke envelops her best friend in a bear hug and pulls her outside for a moment. When Peyton tries to protest she tells her "We need to fix your make up before you go and talk to anyone in there. You look like a panda P. Sawyer and that is unacceptable." A small laugh escapes Peyton's lips and then she lets Brooke work her magic. "What kind of magic bag do you have there? You can't possibly have everything you need in there!" "Don't worry Blondie. You are going to be the first user of my new make-up line and this little box here is called Emo Cheerleader and has everything in it I will need to fix you."
Brooke is finished quickly and they return to their friends at the end of the duet. Haley will sing two songs and Peyton is curious as to how Nathan will react since she will start with "Halo" and that was the song she didn't warn him about. Still, this song holds a special place in their relationship, as Haley informed her.
She watches Nathan closely when the music starts but he is only watching his wife and he looks proud. After the set is finished he waits for Haley at the stage steps and kisses her while swinging her around. Peyton can't help but wish for a relationship as drama free as the James-Scott marriage is right now. But for now she is single and if the song choices tonight were any indication there is also zero chance for her and Jake ever again.
She goes to the bar to grab a drink and then retreats to her office.
Did you like the song choices for Jake?
