The awkwardest date ever

May's POV

We hurried back and found Brock, who didn't seem to be upset at all. He was busy flirting with some girl, who looked rather uncomfortable with the sudden displays of Brock's explosive attention.

"Well, that's not very surprising," Misty grumbled, "He was determined to find a girl after all."

I laughed. "Should we go rescue her?"

Misty cracked her knuckles. "I'm on it."

She marched forwards and in the middle of Brock's sentence, she smacked him over the head.

"Ouch! Misty, why'd you have to go and do that for?" Brock complained, rubbing the sore spot on his head.

"No flirting," Misty said.

The girl beside him giggled. "Looks like you already have a girl. I'll take my leave."

"Misty isn't Brock's!" Ash burst out angrily.

I jumped in surprise. I hadn't expected the sudden display of anger.

Misty and Brock both also seemed shocked and Drew had a knowing smirk on his face.

Ash grumbled and crossed his arms. "She doesn't belong to Brock."

"We know that Ash, don't get so angry," Misty said, "Look, you completely scared her now."

The girl had completely run off now, turn around a corner or something because none of us could see her.

Ash made more grumbles, seeming to be upset.

I looked to Drew. "Why is Ash so upset?"

Drew flicked his hair. "Well, from what I can see, he's jealous, but I've never been jealous so I wouldn't know."

"Really?" I asked in surprise, "You've never been jealous? Not even if someone took your strawberries?"

Drew went slightly pink and lost his composure for a moment before he flicked his hair again. "Strawberries are on a different level of existence May. I suppose you wouldn't know."

I leaned forwards. "There are different levels?"

I honestly had no idea what he was talking about. Harley and Solidad both had told me Drew got jealous easily. I guessed he was lying now, but I had to find something to trip him up with. Then I'd get the better of him.

Drew huffed. "I'm not going to tell it to you."

"Ash, come on Ash, don't be such a grump," Misty said, catching my attention as she poked the arms of the fuming boy.

Ash huffed and turned away. Was jealousy really that bad?

Misty poked him again. "Come on, you can't stay upset."

"I can," Ash mumbled.

"We'll get dinner," Misty said.

Ash perked ever so slightly.

"Yeah, and it'll be just us of course. No extras," Misty promised.

Ash perked further. "Just us? Like you and I, Misty?"

Misty blinked. "Oh I meant Brock, May and Drew too."

"Um, no that's ok," Brock said, "I'm going to head in for the night. You guys have fun on your date."

He hurried away, leaving us standing there. What were we supposed to do now?

"A date huh?" Drew asked, breaking the silence.

"Well, no!" I squeaked, "None of us are couples."

"Ah, but there are two guys and two girls," Drew pointed out, "I suppose it would make sense to pair up."

"Then I've got Misty!" Ash exclaimed, linking his arm with hers.

Misty blushed and raised her hand as if to hit him. She stopped though and sighed. "Oh whatever."

"I suppose for the sake of being a good sport, I shall take May then," Drew said.

My face felt like it was on fire. "Now you look here! I am not going on a date with this grasshead!" I jabbed him in the chest.

Drew caught my hand and gave a low chuckle. He leaned in close and my face felt like it was heating up for no apparent reason.

"Do it for Ash and Misty," He mumbled.

I could only give a small nod.

"Besides, then you can say you've been on a date with the great Drew," He said, flicking his hair.

And my face was back to being red from anger. I held my hand out. "Misty… Mallet please."

"Ohhhh boy, run Drew!" Ash said.

Drew's face paled further (I didn't know that could happen) and he darted away as the mallet was placed in my hand.

"Drew you get back here!" I yelled, chasing after him.

Misty's POV

Eventually I got May to settle down. Well, she wasn't too settled. She stilled seemed to be simmering with anger because Drew continued to smirk.

Ash was skipping by me, possibly the happiest I'd seen him all week.

I sighed, we were an odd group, that much was certain. None of us looked like this so called 'double date'.

What was Brock thinking when he decided to leave us alone? He could've very well made us a meal or easily joined us. I didn't understand the point of this.

"Where should we go?" Ash asked.

"Oh, it doesn't matter," I replied.

"Let's go in there then!" May exclaimed, pointing to what looked like a little family restaurant.

"Looks good," I said.

I couldn't help but smile at the little bell that chimed when we entered. It seemed to suit the store, which was mostly empty now. There was another couple in one of the corners that seemed so focused on each other, the bell didn't bother them at all. I wondered if they'd even heard.

The family who I assumed owned the restaurant consisted of a couple and one small child, who ran to greet us.

The girl tugged on Ash's hand. "Come on mister, this way! You get to sit on this table."

I shrugged at the other two and followed to a four seater table. It was a simple set up and the vase in the middle held a single peony.

"You get to sit with Peony today. I picked her this morning just for this table," The girl said.

"Oh how pretty," May said picking it up to smell it.

"Well, how does it smell?" Drew asked, seating himself beside her and giving a smirk.

"Well, I don't know. I'm not a flower expert." May huffed and shoved the flower to his face. "You smell it, Mr. Rose!"

Drew's face immediately started to go pink. "Mr. Rose! Really? May, I thought we dropped that."

I leaned on my palms. "Mr. Rose huh?"

Drew blushed further. "We don't talk about it."

"Oh no, please do," I said, "we want to talk about it."

"It's because all the roses!" May exclaimed, "He's like Mr. Rose."

Drew had just about reached the limit of the amount of blood that could possibly rise to his cheeks. I had to wonder why this was getting him so worked up? After all, he was the one who tossed the roses in the first place.

Luckily for Drew though, the young woman came to the table with some glasses and poured some water. She placed some simple pamphlet like menus in the middle of the table. "I'll give you a few minutes to decide."

I went to take one of the pamphlets and my pinkie ended up brushing against Ash's thumb as he grabbed one too. My hand jerked away by instinct and my face felt red all over.

"Oh, Sorry Mist," he said, grin on his face large as ever.

"It's ok," I said, snatching the menu and holding it in front of my face to hide myself.

"Ah Ash! I had that one!"

I dared to peek over the menu to see Ash and May had their hands on the same one. Drew was peering over his own menu, much like mine, at the two trainers. Right now though, they seemed more like children.

"No way May, I had this one," Ashe said stubbornly.

"Guys," I said, "you're fighting over a menu. There's another right there."

"It's pointless Misty," Drew said, "this is war to them."

Ash growled slightly and May made a similar noise back at him. Both were staring each other in the eye.

The menu torn and May went squealing backwards, only stopped by a fast reaction from Drew to catch her.

Ash wasn't so lucky and fell on the floor. He yelped sharply, hitting the back of his head.

"That's what you get for being childish," I said down to him as he rolled off to stand back up.

"Drew! You can let me go now!"

I glanced at May, who was by now very pink in the face.

He leaned in teasingly close. "Oh I don't know May, I'm sure you quite enjoy this."

She gave a gasp and grabbed the single remaining menu to smack at Drew.

Drew laughed and uprighted her.

Ash seated himself and whined, crossing his arms. "Thanks May, now I don't have one."

He reached quickly, as if to take hers, but she held it out of reach.

"Just share Misty's," May said.

I was about to splutter out a protest, but Ash perked and leaned over. His face pressed close to mine, not quite touching, but enough so I could sense his presence. His brow furrowed, trying to make a decision.

I could imagine if our breaths were coloured, they might perform a colourful dance of swirls in the air as they would mix behind the menu.

My face felt hot as he leaned forwards to narrow his eyes at an option and I felt the very edge strands of his hair tickle my cheek.

My heart pounded and I wondered if it would explode.

Drew and May's arguing had become background noise. In my head, it may as well have been just us there, hiding behind the same menu. I was almost brave enough in the moment to lean and press the side of my face against him.

Almost.

The moment ended and I shoved the menu away, gasping for a breath I didn't know I'd started holding.

"You can have it," I squeaked, "I already know what I want."

I didn't, but at least I could remember one thing on that menu and for the sake of my pride I would order just that.

"Oh, why thanks Mist," He said, shooting me a heart-warming grin.

I stood up quickly, already starting to head to where a sign pointed towards the restroom. "May, bathroom. Please."

Me: it's a little short, but it'll be ok.

Ash: OH MY GOSH YOU'RE BACK!? Food please?

Misty: YOU'RE BACK! I can't believe you left us!

Me: Sorry? aha... I had a lotta things going on... HEYYYYY! I didn't leave for that long. It's been only a week since I last wrote something

Misty: Not this story! You left us!

Brock: AND ME UST WAITING THERE!

Me: ehe... ehe... Well... Oops?

Well it's been so long I actually forgot what I was originally planning. SO I'm just gonna make it up as I go now. I think I'm feeling better. So I'm actually going to honestly try to get this done. Though I dunno how I could make this forced double date any more awkward

Oh well! Some encouragement may help me get through the next chapter :P I'm only 200 words into the next and struggling to know how I wanna write this
