Chapter 25
The demon looked down on the sleeping blonde girl. Smirking, he gently grabbed Zelda's arm and shook it. Blue eyes fluttered open and then a small scream emanated from her as she saw who had woke her. "Good morning, my dearest Hylia." He purred.
Quickly gathering her wits about her, Zelda scurried backwards out of his reach. As he glowered and reached for her, she slammed a foot into his face. The kick caught the pale figure off guard and he crumpled forward, a hand to his face, sputtering curses at her. Using this distraction, she burst from the tent, running to where she had seen Impa begin her watch. "IMPA?!" she screamed, looking frantically about. Finally she spotted the sheikah lying on the ground and next to her was a figure obscured by the shadows. Zelda slowed her pace but daren't stop, not with the demon behind her whom was most likely giving chase now. The stranger turned towards her, the moonlight illuminating his features so she could see…
"Link?! Oh my god Link!" she ran faster towards him and slammed into him, burying her face in his chest crying tears of fear and joy. She wrapped her arms around him and squeezed, reassurance flooding her as his arms went around her as well "You're alive! I thought… it doesn't matter, we need to go! Ghirahim's here!" She made to push away and grab his hand but his arms remained locked about her. "Link? Come on, we have to run!" Instead of complying, he tightened his grip on her. Confused she glanced up at his face and felt herself go cold. In place of her mark was a black diamond. No emotion was on the hero's face, except one, pure hatred. "No." she whispered shocked. She felt herself go weak with despair, gazing into those eyes, feeling as if time stopped.
"Excellent work, Skychild." The demon stated, ignoring the blood dripping down his face.
The goddess looked from Ghirahim to Link, "Link please" she whispered, staring into his eyes those beautiful blue eyes she loved so much…that showed the exact opposite emotion towards her "Its me. Its Zelda. Your Zelda. Your best friend and…Please Link we need to get away from him and help you. Whatever it is that monster has told you to make you change your heart isn't true. I…I love you Link."
A scoff emanated from the pale man who just stood there watching "How touching."
Ignoring him Zelda continued "Link" she touched his face, fingers brushing the mark, shuddering at the feeling it radiated "this isn't you. Don't go down this path. You are nothing like that…that thing!" Silence met her words as Link continued to say nothing. "Please, there's still a chance for you, you can still be my hero."
At this Link finally spoke "No."
"Wha-why?!" Zelda screamed at him in desperation, tears filling her eyes once more.
"I'm no hero…and…you lie…you never loved me…you left me with him to torture me and…"
"I HAD TO! I had to protect EVERYONE Link! I could not let the whole world fall just because of one man! IT didn't matter if" she gasped as she started crying hard now "if he was the most important thing to me or if I was practically dying inside knowing what you were going through with no chance of being able to save you. I wanted to Link, you HAVE to believe that." She stared into his eyes, willing him to believe her and unable to say anymore as her throat closed up with fear and sadness.
"Hmmm, strange…I could be mistaken, do elucidate me if I am, but is it not said that if one truly loves another being, that they will through any lengths to be with them, to save them? As I recall, fair maiden, this is exactly how our dear hero came to be in this situation. Following you to what came to be his defeat…by me." Ghirahim chuckled and shrugged "And yet, you profess the same feelings but did not do anything for him when you knew he was captured." He cocked a pale eyebrow "Is that not true, Link?"
Zelda stiffened as if struck when after an eternity of silence Link nodded in affirmation. Knees going weak she sagged in his, what was once comforting but now foreign, embrace.
Sauntering over, Ghirahim bowed and then proffered the girl his gloved hand "As it is, Lady Hylia, I'm afraid you have lost and must come with us. My master is in need of revival and you can come quietly or we can proceed with a merry chase but the end result will be the same."
Swallowing, she took the hand and rose to her feet, bowing her head as to not meet his dark gaze.
The Demon Lord glanced at Link "Pick up the dog and follow us, Skychild." When he was satisfied that his servant was complying he started to lead the girl towards the sacred grounds where he could finally, FINALLY, resurrect and be reunited with his master. He almost let out a burst of laughter but…not yet, not yet. The moment was not quite right, there could still be complications. Glancing at Hylia he raised an eyebrow when he saw she was staring at him.
"You lied to me about Link." She hissed.
A grin went across his face as he shook his head "No, lady, I did not. I told you that ' the hero you knew was no longer' which was and still is undeniably true" chuckling " as well as the pleasure being the thing that ultimately broke him."
Glaring at him she growled "You're a monster."
He pursed his lips "Demon Lord" he corrected "made by His own hand but through your own inaction as well."
"what?"
A wry smile flicked across his lips "Search your goddess' memories, dear maiden, I'm sure things will become transparent."
Still glaring at the Demon Lord she retreated inside herself to try and recollect the needed memory. It was difficult as the images she saw were both hers and not hers and as a result were in a way locked from access. Eventually though she recalled it and stopped walking bringing them both up short and allowing Link to close the distance between. She stared at the ground for a while before she brought it up to meet with the demon's.
Link started as he saw the blue color of her eyes was now gold as the sun, and stood statuelike as he watched their interaction.
Ghirahim met Hylia's gaze evenly "I take it you remember now, Goddess."
Golden eyes gazed at him with both pity and longing "You know I tried what I could to free you, you know that. I would've given anything to have you returned…but I had to put my subject's and their lives first. Besides" she whispered "YOU agreed to his bargain as much as I did."
"Hmm, perhaps, but I was, regretfully, under the assumption that there would've been some effort on your part to retrieve me from my imprisonment. As we can see, I was most…disillusioned." He bent his head, bringing his lips close to hers and whispering"And it appears that history was doomed to repeat itself" he gestured in Link's general direction.
"I cant change the past, Ghirahim, but, if you let me, I can make a difference now." She tilted her head up, their lips almost touching. The tension palpable enough to be cut with a knife if one wished.
The pale man's face broke with a smile and he started laughing harshly as he lifted his head away and started walking again, forcefully yanking on her arm causing her to stumble to her knees before she regained her feet "I'm sure you could Hylia, I'm sure you could, however, I am in dire need to revive my REAL master and lover. Unfortunate as it is to you now, it causes me no small amount of joy that you've bound yourself in such a weak form that is so easily handled."
The group had reached the clearing of the sealed grounds and the descent towards the bottom was started in silence. Tears were clearly falling down Zelda's cheeks again, the stream seeming to never stop. Her thoughts awhirl at first but then calming down as she realized, if sacrificing this body was what it took to buy more time, then that's what would happen. The demons would rule a while, for part of her soul would be required to resurrect The Demon King to his true form. But the rest… Hylia lifted her golden gaze skywards, sensing above the clouds an essence she could borrow until it was time to be reborn.
Ghirahim stopped, using his free hand he gestured to a place a few feet from the marking "Skychild, place the shiekah there and keep watch on her; doubtful as it is that the poison would have diluted by now I'm not taking chances."
The goddess snatched her hand from Ghirahim's grip, surprising him, and walked towards her fallen warrior. Bending down, barely glancing at either male, she came eye to eye with Impa and took her hand. While Impa could do nothing to acknowledge her or her prescence, Hylia knew that she understood. "I'm sorry" she whispered her eye color fading from golden to azure.
"Touching." Ghirahim sighed and extended his arm, noticing how Zelda was shaking as she took it, he couldn't help but smile as he led her next to the stone pillar. "If you would please lay on your back here, m'lady." He knelt next to her and began to focus, chanting rhythmically and intricately weaving patterns over her still form, not noticing her gaze into the sky. Gradually she began to glow as her spirit was pulled out into its pure form.
She focused as hard as she could, struggling against the invisible bonds that were attempting to drag all of her into the dark form waiting below. Screaming with the pain of it, she ripped her soul in two, allowing some to be swallowed by the beast with the rest soaring into the sky out of reach.
Link backed up a pace as the ground beneath him began to shake as the marking burned a deep vibrant red before the earth rent open as a massive scaled beast forced its way out, causing the pale demon to begin triumphantly laughing. His mouth dropped open as the monster engulfed the goddess' essence before it began to glow as well. Morphing into what was most obviously the Demon King. He fell to his knees and inclined his head, staring at the ground.
"Well done, Ghirahim. I am most pleased with you. You may have one desire granted."
Ghirahim's smile widened and he bowed towards his master "Demon of demons, besides the promise of serving you for eternity, all I ask is to keep my own slave, the fallen hero Link."
The blonde felt the intense gaze settle on him and he started to shiver in fear from his kneeling position, yet he still brought his own eyes up to meet Demise's.
An evil smile curled the corners of the black mouth "Fitting, very well, Ghirahim you may do with him what you wish."
"Thank you master."
As the demons, their slave, and their captive departed the grounds, overhead a solitary red loftwing circled above the clearing a final time before disappearing into the sky.
