Chapter 4

Sleep

Jane went to bed that night with the stories her mother had spoken to her only hours prior, colourful memories unfolding before her eyes as she recalled the fairy tales she was once told about fairies, and Neverland with the leading character of Peter Pan.

The teenager never did realise her mother had lead such a different life during her youth, she just didn't realise her mother was once referred to as "Wendy" and had a life before becoming well.. "Mother"

Gazing up at the flickering candle on her night stand, Jane wondered if there really was a world within the stars and she wondered if her mother really did travel to this strange land in the galaxy or was it simply just make belief?

She shook her head and scoffed as she recalled those silly tales, the whimsical memoirs and the girlish poetry her mother used to write. Jane didn't have time to fill her head with such nonsense nor live in a world of make belief - the war was happening and London was shadowed with fear. Children were being taken from the city to live with distant relatives in the country, the air was thick with smog and families were torn apart there was no space for such fantasy!

Although a meer child living in a time where the generation of children had to grow up quickly - this never did stop Jane gazing up at the sky wondering if Peter really did exist even though - of course - she felt incredibly silly doing so - she thought that perhaps she just grew up too fast and never had the chance to meet Peter Pan because of the war.

The thought of colourful wings, shimmering but mysterious waters, fairies, dangerous pirates, and dancing lights in the night floated around Jane's mind, and for a moment - just a moment she thought she heard the sweet sound of tinkling bells outside her window before sleep began to take over.

Jane fell asleep that night with a small smile on her lips as her mind danced with the most wonderful dreams.
