-"He dated y... He used to date my daughter before she went missing. He has always loved Hanna and he's one of the few people who never gave up looking for the girls." Ashley felt as if she was living in a distorted reality. It was beyond cruel or strange to talk about her daughter to a woman who could very well be said daughter.
-"Were you against him dating her? Against him dating Hanna?" Emma studied the woman carefully, waiting for her answer even though she pretty much suspected the answer to that question. Pain and anger had filled Ashley's voice when she had seen Caleb standing in the doorway, but there was also a hidden note of caring there as well. But as to who was causing those emotions Emma wasn't certain.
-"I guess you could say that it's complicated. I didn't approve of them dating when I first met Caleb. But Hanna didn't budge and over time I was given the chance to see that he loved my daughter more than anyone else besides me ever did. Sure, they had their moments when they would argue and break up, but I've never seen Hanna happier than when she was around him."
-"Mrs. Marin? What happened to your daughter? How did she disappear?" Emma turned her head slightly to look through the window into the police station. She noticed that one of the women that had been there when she arrived was talking to Jesse and Caleb. She seemed to be pissed off about something.
-"Mona, one of her friends, was allegedly murdered and another one was arrested for the murder. Hanna and the other three missing girls were arrested and prosecuted as accomplices. The police wanted to separate the four of them from Alison, the main girl accused, so they moved them to another facility. On the way there, the van was in some sort of accident and the girls disappeared. The security guards told us that someone caused the accident and kidnapped the girls. Shortly after the girls' disappearance it was discovered that Mona was still alive. Whoever kidnapped the girls had kidnapped Mona as well. The girls were framed."
-"Wait. So you're saying that Hanna was framed for murder and kidnapped on the way to jail? Who would do something like that? And why?" Emma felt confused about the new turn of events. And if the kidnapping story was true how did she end up in New York? Who was she running away from?
Their conversation was interrupted, however, as Danny knocked on the door and popped his head inside the room. He watched the two of them before addressing Emma.
-"I sent the DNA samples to be tested at the local forensics lab and I also sent some samples to our lab back in New York. Jesse figured it would be best if our police department worked together with Rosewood's to solve this case. So I'm about to head over to Jesse's apartment and get some rest. Are you coming or do you want to stay?"
-"I think I'll go to that coffee shop further down the street and eat something. I can't remember the lasttimeI did so. And if I collapse on the ground from not feeding myself, dad's gonna kill me. I'll see you later Danny."
Ashley excused herself while the pair talked and walked out of the room. She headed towards Caleb and Veronica Hastings, who were quietly discussing the new turn of events. Caleb grimaced when he saw the look on Ashley's face, clearly stating that the rumors were true. Hanna had amnesia. Caleb's expression softened as he opened his arms and hugged Ashley Marin. The two weren't on the best of terms right now, but he would always try to support her and aid her if possible.
-"I told her about her arrest and the kidnapping. She doesn't remember anything. I figured you may want to talk to her as well." Ashley released herself from Caleb's arms and headed over to where Ted was waiting for her. They quietly walked away from the police station, leaving Veronica and Caleb behind.
-"Caleb. Be careful how you handle this. If that girl is not Hanna and you tell her anything that you shouldn't you may get her into unnecessary trouble. I know you want to see this mess finally be resolved. We all do, but just be careful." Veronica Hastings was no longer the combative woman she had been years ago. Having one of her children arrested for murder and then disappearing because of an unknown foe, she had lost all will to live.
Caleb nodded his head before making his way to the office where Emma was. As he entered the room he noticed she had grabbed her jacket and purse and that she was preparing to leave. She stopped when she got near the door, looking at him expectantly.
-"Leaving so soon? You only just got here and you're pretty much the talk of the entire police department." Caleb stared back at her, wondering what the young woman felt like right now. How did she cope with this entire mess?
-"Actually, I was about to head out and grab something to eat not that it's any of your business Mr...?" Her eyes sparkled with annoyance and Caleb grinned at her. She had the same look in her eyes that he remembered Hanna having when he would step on her toes and not give her something that she wanted.
-"Caleb Rivers. But you should just call me Caleb. Mind if I join you for a coffee? I was supposed to go to the Brew later today anyways." Caleb stepped aside and smiled at Emma. She bit her lower lip, looking into his eyes. They seemed so familiar.
-"Very well. I'll just go and inform my friend of where I'm going. Wait for me?" Emma stopped when she said those words. It felt like she had said them to someone long ago. Shaking her head slightly Emma made her way to Jesse and let her friend know she was going to grab a bite. Caleb waited for her silently at the door, looking at ease being inside the police station.
-"Are you a cop?" Her question surprised him. Caleb watched her through the corner of his eye and chuckled. She looked at him, intrigued by his reaction. Caleb grabbed her arm and led her down the stairs, outside the police station, and towards the Brew.
-"I'm not a cop. But I spent quite a lot of time in that police station so I'm comfortable going in there now." Caleb's answer sounded elusive and Emma wondered what the man did for a living. She entered the Brew, the sweet smell of pastries filling her nostrils. Heading towards the counter, she was oblivious to the silence that had fallen inside the coffee shop. After carefully deciding what she wanted, Emma prepared to place her order.
-"Hanna?" A man in his mid-thirties stared at her from the cash register while Caleb followed her there. He was pale as he waited for her answer. Emma furrowed her eyebrows at him, trying to figure out if she knew him or not.
-"Ezra. Hey, sorry I didn't come by sooner. I was at the police station with Toby and Veronica. This is Emma. Emma this is Ezra Fitz, one of my former English teachers and the owner of this coffee shop." Emma extended her hand to Ezra and shook it. Ezra took a glance at Caleb that said they would discuss things later and after serving them with their orders he went to the back of the coffee shop.
-"Wow, there must be something wrong with my face if everyone runs away after saying like ten words to me." Emma took a seat at a small table and took a bite of her sandwich. Caleb, who had opted for some fries, grimaced.
-"Seeing you appear like that was a shock to him. Ezra was dating one of Hanna's friends before they went missing. And he probably feels confused as to what's going on."
-"I understand." Emma watched his fries for a moment and pondered if she should risk ordering a portion for herself. It would mean more workout hours to burn off the calories. "Do you mind if I grab some of your fries? I feel a craving for them, but I would never be able to eat a whole portion by myself."
-"Go for it." Caleb hadn't eaten any of his fries yet. He was testing to see how things would go between him and Emma, if she would have Hanna's small quirks of eating his food if uncomfortable or not. Her asking about it had thrown him off. He had not expected it.
-"So Caleb, tell me more about yourself. I mean about Hanna. I mean... Fuck, you get what I mean." Caleb laughed while she babbled about asking him those questions. An easy silence fell between them before Caleb started talking.
