Mac Taylor typed furiously on his computer keyboard. He had been trying to complete some of his paperwork ever since Danny called and told him that he and Emma had arrived in Rosewood. Danny had informed him that he had sent some DNA samples to their own lab to be tested.

As soon as those samples arrived at the lab Mac assigned Stella to do the tests. He didn't want people to say he was using his influence for personal gain. Stella Bonasera, one of Mac's oldest co-workers and most experienced CSI member, immediately started working on the tests. She did the tests three times before giving Mac her answer about Emma's identity.

Mac had driven her up the walls with his impatience for the results. He eventually decided to leave New York and head to Rosewood, but Stella, who had been on a lunch break, stopped him. She reminded him that he was in charge of the crime lab and that Danny had already been assigned to helping Emma if needed.

Eventually, by the end of the day, Mac informed Stella he was indeed going to Rosewood for the weekend and that he would be back to work on Monday. Stella sighed and nodded her head, defeated. She promised to call Mac and inform him about the tests results as soon as she had them.

Lindsay Monroe had left the crime lab early to pick up Emma's daughter from preschool. Abby was used to her mom being away on business trips often so she was used to spending time at Lindsay's apartment. Stella and Don Flack promised to drop by and take the small girl to the zoo over the weekend and to help Lindsay in case she needed anything. Mac had almost reached Rosewood when he got the first call from Stella, followed by one from Jesse.

-"Mac, I have the tests results. Jesse was right. Emma's real name is Hanna Marin, who was kidnapped along with her friends five years ago. She must have been running from her kidnapper the day Danny hit her with his car." Mac gripped the steering wheel harder. He remembered seeing the pictures Jesse and Danny had taken at the accident scene. At the time, they had been certain Emma would not pull through and that she would die. It had been an ugly scene.

Danny once told Mac he would never be able to forget the way Emma looked that first night. Her entire body was covered in wires and tubes. She had a major surgery that day and she would undergo two more if she survived that night. Those crucial hours when her heart stopped twice had been the longest hours Danny had ever experienced. The entire team worked on finding out who Emma was and finding her family, but they came up empty.

-"Stella, talk to Don and Lindsay. I want one of you to stay with Abby at all times. The psycho that kidnapped Emma might try it again or worse. He could try to kidnap Abby as vengeance."

-"You think that whoever this person is would try something like that? When there's so many people looking for him or her?" Stella felt a little confused, but she understood Mac's decision and she backed him up completely.

-"All I know is that this person kidnapped four girls that were in police custody and that Emma got amnesia while running away from someone, probably her kidnapper. My guess is that they will try to force her back in their game. And I'm not gonna let that happen." .

-"Ok, I'll talk to the rest of our team and I'll make sure one of us is always guarding Abby. Mac? Be careful and tell Emma we all love her, ok?" Mac never had the chance to answer Stella because his phone started ringing again, this time with a call from Jesse.

-"Stella I have to go. Jesse is calling me. I'll talk to you later." As soon as Mac answered his call he noticed something was wrong. Jesse's voice held a distinct hint of worry and fear in it. "Jesse, what's wrong?"

-"Emma's identity has been confirmed. Mac, I think her kidnapper is trying to contact her. A very suspicious package arrived addressed to Hanna Marin earlier. I had it tested for possible explosives. Emma asked me to call you and put you up to speed with the news while she opened it."

Jesse made her way back to her office, noticing that Emma wasn't there anymore. "Mac hold on a second. Cavanaugh, where's Emma?" Jesse watched Toby motion that Emma had walked out of the room. She then noticed the note waiting on her desk. "Jesus, Mac, the kidnapper is threatening to go after Abby."

-"Jesse? I'll be there shortly. I'm in Rosewood. I'll talk to you in a few minutes." Mac ended the call and sped to the police department. Making his way to the reception desk, he flashed the officer there his ID and then asked where he could find Emma. He soon got his answer when he heard his daughter yelling.

-"Seriously? You are the incompetent police officer who failed to find me or any of the other missing girls. In fact, as far as I know, you are also the one who arrested me for a murder that never even happened. And now you want to try and help? Really? Well guess what. You can do so by getting out of my sight fast before I do the reasonable thing and sue this entire police department."

Making his way to the direction where the sounds were coming from, he saw Jesse frowning at Emma's interlocutor. Reacting quickly, Mac decided to defuse the situation before his daughter's temper really got the best of her.

-"Ok, that's quite enough. What do you say we take a walk until you've calmed down and let everyone in this police station do their jobs?" A strong male voice sounded from the doorway, silencing Emma. She turned her head to see who it was and sighed in relief when she saw Detective Mac Taylor standing there. I

-"Dad. Hey. What are you doing here?" Emma headed to him and gave him a hug, letting herself be comforted by him. She took a moment, trying to calm herself. She felt like smashing something. The entire day had been a rollercoaster and now her child was threatened as well.

-"Jesse and Stella kept me updated. Come on. Let's go for a walk. We could talk about what' going on, starting with how you're holding up." Mac wrapped an arm around Emma's shoulders and escorted her outside the building while everyone else watched them interact with each other.

-"Detective Tanner? A word if I may?" Jesse could barely contain her rage. She entered an interrogation room and waited for Tanner to close the door before exploding. "I don't know what sort of game you're playing here, detective, but this is my investigation. If I ever catch you talking to that girl without informing me first about it I'll make sure you get reassigned to do desk duties for the rest of you career. This is my investigation and we do things my way. If you have any concerns about the way things are done you discuss them with me. You have any questions for that girl? You tell me about it and then I'll make sure she answers them."

-"And who do you think you are to tell me what to do? Do you think that just because you were assigned to lead this case you are more qualified for it? I spent years looking for those girls and uncovering their lies and I know more about what has been going on with this case then you do. Trust me, this is not an easy case to solve."

-"Look, I don't care that you have been working on this case longer! Your incompetence during this entire situation is the sole reason you were demoted and I was put in charge of this case! And for the record you should be praying that Emma doesn't sue your ass for arresting her for a murder that never happened in the first place. You arrested that girl and her friends and then they got kidnapped. And even then you went after their friends instead of trying to find them. Now I promise if you step over me one more time you'll be out of this police force faster than you ex-partner got kicked out."

The two women stared at each other. Eventually, Tanner conceded her defeat and left the interrogation room. Jesse sighed and rubbed her temples. All she could think of was how much she needed a good glass of wine, a movie, and a night of decent sex. Sadly she would get none of those things unless she managed to get to the bottom of her case.

Hanna took Mac to the bench outside the police station. She then filled in the blanks with as many details as she could without revealing herself as not having amnesia anymore. Mac listened to her quietly, trying to assert the situation.

-"You still haven't told me. How are you holding up?" Mac's eyes studied his daughter's, waiting for her answer. Hanna sighed, deciding to be as honest as possible to him.

-"It's like being stuck inside a whirlpool of emotions. I spent years trying to understand why no one was looking for me or if I had a family. Now I know the answers to those questions and they are nothing I ever would've thought of. I don't know where I'm standing or who I'm supposed to be right now. It's like I don't know if I'm Emma or Hanna or both. And then add the fact that my former kidnapper is out there threatening to go after my child if I don't comply with his requests? I'm ready to check into a mental hospital right about now."

Mac nodded his head, his arm going down Hanna's back and rubbing it in a comforting way. They remained there quietly for a few minutes before Hanna spotted her mom's car arriving at the police station. Standing up from the bench she motioned for Mac to follow her inside the police station. Ashley was followed inside by Veronica Hastings, who was clearly doing everything she could to calm the other woman down.

Making her way inside the building, Hanna realized she would soon have to talk to Caleb and reveal the fact that her memories were returning. She just hoped she would actually have more answers about her actual escape before she did that. Once they entered the room, Caleb headed their way and stopped, confused when he saw Mac.

-"Detective Taylor? What are you doing here?" An equally confused Mac stared at Caleb for a second before he connected the dots as to who Caleb was.

-"Caleb Rivers was it? I'm here to support Emma throughout this entire mess. Please excuse me for a second while I talk to Detective Angell." Mac kissed Hanna's forehead while Ashley Main headed her way.

-"Mac Taylor is the closest thing I had to a father in the past five years. How is it that you know him?" Hanna turned her head to face Caleb.

-"Let's just say it's complicated..."
