Caleb avoided answering Hanna's question while Ashley Marin reached them. She pulled Hanna in a hug, tears coming down her face. This time, however, Hanna returned the hug after a few moments of hesitation. Veronica Hastings and Toby made their way to them while Jesse called a meeting with every available officer in Rosewood.
-"OK, listen up everybody. As you all know, five years ago, five teenage girls from Rosewood were kidnapped by a mysterious figure that called themselves A. We now have confirmation that Hanna Marin has managed to escape that person and that the rest of the girls: Mona Vandervaal, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, and Emily Fields appear to be still alive. It is our job to find those girls and bring them back home. Starting now, this case is our number one priority and I expect everyone to put in all of their efforts into bringing those girls back to their families and arresting their kidnapper. That will be all. Thank you." .
Everyone in the room stared at either Jesse or at Hanna. Jesse and Mac made their way to Hanna. She released herself from her mother's embrace and faced Mac, forcing Ashley to do so as well. Veronica, Toby, and Caleb stood there waiting awkwardly, wondering what would happen next.
-"Dad, this is Ashley Marin, my birth mother. Mrs. Marin, this is Detective Mac Taylor, the man who adopted me as his own child a couple of years ago. And this is Veronica Hastings, one of the mothers of my missing friends." Mac greeted the two women. When Hanna introduced him to them, Ashley felt a small pang of pain when she realized how much love and respect Hanna's voice held for Mac. It was something the old Hanna never had the chance to offer to Tom.
-"It is a pleasure to meet you, detective. Hanna, listen, I was thinking that maybe it would be best for you to come home with me? Who knows? Maybe being in your old bedroom could trigger some of your memories. Detective Taylor, you are most welcome to spend the night in one of our guest bedrooms. Caleb, you will join us as well, I presume?"
-"I don't know what to say about this. I'm not so sure it's a good idea. Dad, what do you think?" Hanna turned her head from Mac to Ashley and then back to Mac. She then took a glimpse at Caleb, who just shook his head.
-"I think you should just do it. I know from my own personal experience that the Marin women are very hard to say no to." Caleb's voice was amused while Hanna shot him an annoyed look. Mac watched the exchange between them before nodding his head slightly.
-"Emma?"
-"Hanna?" Both Mac and Ashley spoke simultaneously making Hanna shift her head between them. They both stopped talking when they realized how confusing everything sounded. Clearing her throat, she eventually answered them.
-"I think it's best that everyone called me Hanna from now on, Dad. That is my real name after all and I think things will be less confusing if everyone used only one of my two names." Jesse and Mac nodded their heads in agreement. They were used to seeing unusual stuff like this due to their cases back in New York.
-"In that case, you should go get some rest and I'll see you here in the morning. I'll let Danny know what's going on and where to find you." Jesse grimaced. She knew time was the one resource they didn't really have. Not with the ultimatum A had given Em...Hanna. But pressuring her friend into trying to remember her past could also cause even more damage.
Hanna hugged Jesse and then the group headed out towards the exit. Toby stayed behind and watched them leave the premises before turning his head to Jesse. "I wouldn't worry as much about her. She has always been the strongest of the lot. Her back story with A is by far the most complex. Believe me, if she didn't break before she won't do it now when she has so many people to support her."
-"Were the two of you close? I noticed you are on great terms with Rivers. And he has quite a reputation to precede him. What's the story there?" Jesse headed to the coffeemaker and poured two coffees. She gave one to Toby and made a small gesture, inviting him to her office.
-"Well, I dated her best friend and she was dating mine. For a long time those girls were the only people in this town to show me and Caleb kindness and respect. They didn't open up easily and trust people often, but when they did they would stand by your side no matter what. Caleb and Hanna went through a lot of crap together and on their own, but if there's one thing I know for sure it's that they loved each other."
-"I've read Rivers' file. He hacked into the police system when the girls went missing. How is it that he wasn't arrested and is now working with the force? I would expect he would have left Rosewood for good. He has a lot of talent and potential. Why is he still here?"
-"Hanna. Caleb lived with only one purpose, finding her and bringing her back home. All of us could have walked away and not look back when this mess happened, but for better or worse we chose whose side we wanted to be on. So we stayed and devoted all of our efforts to tracking our friends and loved ones and bringing them back home."
-"I see." Jesse made a mental note about the new information Toby provided her. She realized that having all of the former love interests for the girls working with the police might be the best way to finding them and their kidnapper.
Hanna stepped out of Mac's car and stared at her house. She stopped on the pavement leading to it and studied it, taking in the subtle changes. She eventually made her way inside, following Ashley while Caleb parked his car on the driveway. Veronica had headed off to her own home, waiting for new updates on the case.
Opening the door, Hanna held back a sob. Her mom had virtually preserved the house, keeping everything untouched. Hanna entered the house, taking small steps towards the kitchen. Her eyes fell over the picture of her and Caleb sitting on the counter. Ashley let her move around the house while Ted came downstairs to check on his wife and their guests.
He took Mac's bags and moved them into a spare bedroom while Mac silently followed him up the stairs. Caleb followed Hanna inside the kitchen and watched her as she absentmindedly caressed the picture of themselves sitting on the kitchen counter.
-"You ok?" Hanna shook her head and sat down on one of the barstools. Taking a look around, Hanna glanced at the stairs when she heard Caleb speak. Her mind went back to a night long ago when she had seen Jason DiLaurentis come down those stairs, buttoning his shirt. Suppressing a shiver, Hanna nodded her head.
-"I think I will be. Caleb? From what Jesse told me, when I was arrested as an accomplice to murder, another girl was tried and sentenced to jail as the main person involved in said murder. Where is she now? Or better yet, who is that person?"
Caleb's eyes darkened as he heard Hanna's question. Truth be told, it was one of the few questions he had hoped to avoid answering in the near future. Over the years, Caleb's first impression about Alison DiLaurentis hadn't changed. She was trouble and bad news to everyone who was unfortunate enough to get close to her.
"Honestly, I'd rather if the two of you never crossed paths again. She was the main reason this chaos started and the bigger the distance between the two of you the better." Caleb's voice was hoarse. "So? How much do you remember about your past? Your small gestures ever since we walked inside this house betrayed you." Caleb spoke in a quiet tone, making Hanna freeze in her spot. She spun around, facing him quietly, unsure how to answer his question.
