-"Caleb, I ..." Hanna stopped when she heard her mom coming down the stairs. A silent agreement passed between her and Caleb. They would talk about it in private, keeping things a secret for a while longer.
-"I arranged for you to sleep in your old room. Maybe it will cause some of your memories to come back. Ted and I are retiring for the night. Let us know if you need anything. Goodnight. Don't stay up much longer, okay? Caleb, I trust you remember your way to the guestroom?"
They both nodded their heads, waiting for Ashley to leave the kitchen. She did so only after giving Hanna an awkward hug and kiss on the cheek. Once she went upstairs Hanna turned her head back to Caleb. "I never considered how hard things must have been for her while I was missing. Caleb, how did I end up in jail? What happened? I have only some of my memories back and most of them relate to you."
-"It's a long and complicated story. I'll fill you in on what I know. Come. Let's have a seat somewhere where we can talk." Caleb took her hand and opened the basement door. They both went down the stairs and stopped once they reached the bottom. "Uh, this place looks different from how I remember it." Caleb cleared his throat while Hanna laughed.
-"You're complaining? Welcome to my world." Hanna turned her head, looking around. "We had a pipe leak after you moved to... Ravenswood? Yes, after you moved to Ravenswood. Unfortunately, the couch couldn't be used anymore after that, so we threw it away."
-"Damn. I was fond of that couch." Caleb grinned at her. They both smiled for another moment before sobering up. "What do you remember about A?" Caleb made sure to keep an eye on the door, making sure no one came down looking for them.
-"Not much. I remember getting blackmailed so that I would get back the money my mom took from the bank." Hanna stopped and looked at Caleb, unsure if she should continue. "Or telling Isobel about my parents hooking up and destroying my father's wedding day. God, that was so messy. It gets really blurry after that. What happened and who was involved?"
-"I see. Well Mona was the one that made you go through those things. She wanted to get revenge on you girls for the way that Alison treated her before she went missing. Eventually, you guys managed to learn the truth about her being A at the end of junior year. She ended up being locked away at Radley for the things she did."
-"Wait, Mona did those things? My best friend during sophomore year? She's the one that ran me ..."
-"Ran over you with her car? Yes. That would be her, mad-house Mona. In between her and Ali you had really tough luck with finding good friends. But Spencer and the girls compensated that."
-"What happened after she was caught?" Hanna took a seat on the stairs, looking at Caleb. He put his hand on her shoulder, rubbing it. He sighed, knowing that the next part of the story would be about really ugly stuff.
-"While Mona was in Radley the current A befriended her and then stole the game from her. And by game I mean the concept of putting you guys go through Hell. The game started again, if you will, during senior year. And it's a lot to take in."
-"Tell me everything." Hanna looked at him, determination burning in her eyes. "I want to know everything about the monster who is threatening to go after my child. I want to know who I'm dealing with."
-"Ok. When senior year started, A dug up Alison's grave and stole the body. Well he stole the body of the person we all thought was Alison. They then framed Emily and you guys for it. One of Ali's friends then moved to town. She used to date Jason. Her name was CeCe Drake. She left town after she killed Wilden and has been on the run ever since. She and Ali are quite a pair to match."
-"Wilden? Wilden. My mom was framed for his murder, right? And then she was saved by Travis confessing the truth about what he saw at the lake the night it happened. What else happened?" Caleb cleared his throat before continuing.
-"A started playing mind tricks with Spencer. She ended up at Radley because she had thought that she found Toby's body in the forest. And then once that all was cleared, the mind games continued, causing Spencer to have a drug addiction. A manipulated things, making her believe she had killed the girl buried inside Ali's tomb. Sometime after I left town for Ravenswood, to deal with my own family matters, Ali turned out to be alive and she came back home."
-"I was wondering why you made those references about Ali still being alive. Is she still in Rosewood?" Hanna stopped as she remembered small things about Alison. None of them made her want to still be a part of Ali's life.
-"She returned home, yes. At the time you guys thought A had died so you brought her back home. But A was still alive and the game continued, more vicious than ever. Toby's house blew up and then A made things look as if Alison had killed Mona. A put us all go through a huge mess, which resulted in Alison being convicted for Mona's murder and the four of you arrested as accessories for her murder. That's when A kidnapped you."
-"I see. Did anything else happen? Has A done anything at all to hurt you?" Caleb shifted on his feet and looked at her, his cheeks reddening. He knew that answering her question would mean she would explode.
-"Well, when Mona was A, she put a lot of incriminating files on my computer and I was nearly arrested for it but you and Spencer were able to delete the files before the police saw them. The new A ran my mom off the road and nearly killed her. Not too long before you were arrested, A locked me inside a kiln that was turned on. Ezra and I were also pelted with arrows but we were able to hide from them and didn't get hurt too bad. We are not 100 percent sure it was A that did it, but I think it is safe bet to say they did."
-"You got locked up in a kiln? What the hell were you doing there in the first place? And why didn't you tell me about this before? Because I remember enough to know you never freaking mentioned it." Caleb smiled at her. She was slowly getting back to her old self.
-"I was trying to get rid of a knife. At the time, I believed that A was using it as means to frame me for murder. My fingerprints were on that knife. And I saw no reason to tell you about this and get you all worked up over something that happened... Ouch, Hanna, what the hell?"
She had slapped his chest when she heard his words. Hanna stood up and fumed at him. "Something that happened? Seriously? What happened to not keeping secrets from each other? Do you have any idea how much it would've destroyed me if you were hurt because of this?"
Hanna's voice broke. She felt herself get hit by a whirlpool of emotions and feelings. Caleb sighed and hugged her petite frame. She closed her eyes and cried on his shoulders, letting go of all the feelings from the past few hours. Caleb's hand raised her chin, wiping her tears away before he leaned his head and kissed her. Hanna's hand went to his hair, bringing him closer to her body. Everything felt so natural and normal, despite all the time that had passed.
-"Caleb. You can't tell anyone about me starting to get my memories back." Hanna eventually released herself from his arms reluctantly. Caleb stared at her, perplexed by her unexpected request. It took him a moment to understand where she was coming from. "This person has been one step ahead of all of us every single time. I know this is a lot to take in but I think the only way that we can stop A once and for all is for me to continue pretending that I have no memories yet."
-"You want to set a trap for A? That's dangerous, Han. The last person to try that was Mona. And she's been his prisoner for well over five years now. I can't let you do that. There's too much at stake."
-"Caleb. I know there's a lot at stake. But A is threatening not just me. He's threatening to go after Abby as well. And I'm not going to sit back and let him play with my child's life. I can't. I won't." Caleb's eyes closed. He sighed once he opened them eventually.
-"Fine, you win. On one condition. I want to know everything there is to know about Abby. Tell me about our daughter." The pair made their way back up the stairs and stopped when they saw Mac sitting at the kitchen table, working on his laptop.
-"Dad? Why are you still up?" Hanna exchanged a small glance with Caleb while Mac focused on working on his laptop.
-"I'm going through the police records related to your kidnapper. What have you two been up to until now? You were missing for like an hour." Mac finally raised his head from the laptop and smiled at them.
-"Caleb told me about A. And I was just about to talk to him about Abby." That sentence caught Mac's attention. He turned his head to Caleb, making the young man shift on his feet nervously. He hadn't felt so awkward about anything since Ashley had found out he was living in the basement. And Mac Taylor was someone who Caleb respected deeply.
-"I have every reason to believe that she's my child." Silence fell inside the kitchen while Mac nodded his head. Hanna took Caleb's hand lightly, taking him over to the kitchen island. They took a seat there with Hanna getting ready to tell Caleb stuff about her life in New York.
