Dearest Gail,

If you are reading this letter, it means I've died, and the Army has released this to you, at my request.

I want to tell you how sorry I am about the way things ended between us. There's still much I'm not at liberty to tell you about why I left. Perhaps by the time you read this, you will know the truth. This much I can say ~ I was given an opportunity to serve my country, one I couldn't walk away from. If you knew the importance of the work I'm taking part in, perhaps you would find it in your heart to forgive me.

I don't know what the future holds - the world seems to be flying headlong into war, and who knows where fate will take us in the months ahead. Perhaps we will meet again. I hope so. I hope on that day I'll find that life has given you everything you deserve… happiness, success, and a good man who will love you as you deserve.

God bless you,
Steven
