Abigail's POV
With a ringing phone being the first thing I woke up to, my patience dwindled from zero to negative thirteen. I threw off my covers and rubbed my eyes, wincing at the sunlight streaming through the windows. The sunlight seemed to be mocking me, and I scowled at it while I straightened up. I staggered over to the table where my books lay scattered and my phone was buzzing. I caught sight of the caller ID and sighed as I answered. "What do you want, Kace?" I mumbled. "Abigail, I'm already at school! Hurry up!" said Kace. "If you're late, it's going to be on your head, not mine." "Geez. Alright, alright. I'll be there in a few," I replied and hung up. Yawning, I started to rummage around my room to gather my things.
I snatched my bag and looped the straps over one arm while I dragged my bike outside. Taking a running start, I hopped onto my bike and pedaled quickly toward the direction of my school. Within a few minutes, the sight of Goode HS came into view, the large building and the front gates with the sign clearly displaying the name of the school. I hopped off my bike, looped a lock around one of the stands, securing it, and looked around to see Kace looking at his watch and tapping his foot impatiently. When I walked over, he sighed with exasperation. "Without me, you would be nowhere," he said, irritably. "Really? Then why don't you count the many times that I saved your skin from-" I retorted back, but a resounding explosion came from behind the school and silencing me and everyone still standing around.
Everyone started to back away slowly from the school while Kace and I edged closer. I heard Katelyn, a typical snobby prep, whispering, "Kace! Come back to me! Stay out of trouble!" I reached for the side of my boot and unsheathed a small knife while Kace morphed a tiny miniature object into a sword. There were whispering in the back, but we both ignored it, edging closer and closer. There was a weird chattering noise and I decided to check it out. Treading carefully and silently around the fallen branches and leaves, I peeked around the corner to see what the source of the noise was. There were skeletons holding shotguns and rifles, and I glanced back at Kace.
There are around twenty skeletons armed. I whispered into his mind, answering his unsaid question. Well, let's go and kill them. He responded. I nodded and we slowly edged our way around the corner again. Kace peeked around, but his brow furrowed. He jabbed me in the ribs, and I hissed, trying to keep from cursing. What? He spoke aloud. "There's no point in that. They're gone." I looked around the corner as Kace stepped out of my way, his eyes darting around. He was right. The group of skeletons from earlier were nowhere to be seen. "So then where did they go…" I muttered to myself when the answer dawned on me. At the same time, so did screams of terror from the front of the school. "What the-" Kace said, whirling around. He started sprinting back the way we came, and I was right behind him. Our footsteps crunched loudly on top of the fallen leaves, but the screams of the students were far louder, becoming increasingly terrified.
