This chapter might get confusing to some of you so please read what days this is happening. I will be going back and forth on the days. I know it sounds weird but it was the best way I thought of getting the picture in my head across. Please read carefully and leave me any questions you may have in the reviews. I will answer all of them promptly.
As soon as the kings had reached the island Marcus attacked Caius. Aro dismissed the guard who were more than happy to go far away from them.
"What is wrong with you!" Marcus yelled as he punched Caius straight into a tree and cut down the majestic oak in half.
"You knew how important this meeting was to me and you insult her!" Marcus said grabbing his fallen brother by the collar and throwing him again.
Caius stood up dusting himself off.
"I did not insult her. I insulted those mutts. You know she deserves better." Caius said as he leapt out of his brothers' next attack. He wasn't going to admit shit to him.
"I don't care who she loves as long as she is happy." Marcus said as he dove for Caius again.
"She deserves a mate from our kind." Caius said blocking Marcus's punch and throwing his brother by using his momentum against him. "If she were with one of our own she would choose an immortal life."
"But she isn't. She chose him and that is her decision to make, not yours!" Marcus said diving for his brother again.
Caius went to block him once more but Marcus knows his moves. He let him think he would succeed only to grab his ankle at the last moment and fling his into the ground. A loud crack could be heard throughout the island.
Aro intervened when he saw that Marcus wasn't finished with Caius.
"Brother please, you two can always discuss this back in Volterra but this is not the time. We do not want to bring any unwanted attention to ourselves." Aro said.
Marcus stared at his brother for another moment and then vanished. He didn't want to be near him anymore, if he did the Volturi would lose a king. Alec came back to his masters when Marcus ran off past him.
"Let him go Alec he needs time alone. He won't be far." Aro said when Alec looked to him for orders. He then dismissed him with a wave of his hand.
Aro walked to his brother and glared over him.
"You couldn't keep your mouth shut could you?" He said.
Caius looked up at Aro and with his last remaining strength he raised his hand and flipped him off.
(Sams house)
As soon as Bella and Jacob had arrived Paul grabbed Bella out of Jakes hold and hugged her tightly. He was so relieved to see them holding hands and smiling that he didn't care about the growls Jake was giving him for stealing her from his side.
"Give me back my girlfriend Lahote!" Jake growled out. His wolf didn't want more male scents on her.
Paul laughed and handed Bella back. "If I had a dollar for every time I heard that I would be a millionaire." Paul said.
"You would be dead is what you would be." Quil said as he rolled his eyes.
"Calm down Jake. You know he loves me like a sister." Bella said as she cuddled closer to Jake.
Jake simply grumbled and held Bella closer. He liked to smell her hair since it was mostly untainted by leech and Paul.
"Why don't we begin." Sam said as he sat in his usual chair. He wished this conversation would be easy.
Jake and Bella made themselves comfortable in the small armchair in the corner. They were going to be the center of attention anyways but it was still their preferred place.
"So, any thoughts Princess?" Paul said with a wide smirk. Oh yeah, he was going to like this new nickname for her.
(Monday June 4th)
Bella and the pack spent all of Monday afternoon talking (more like arguing) about what to do about Marcus and the rest of the leeches. The pack was divided about allowing him to stay. They didn't want to take the chance of the leech king slipping up and killing a human or having his presence attract more vampires to the area. No one wanted more kids to shift.
Bella couldn't really decide which side to take. She wanted to get to know Marcus better but she also could see the threat he posed to the people. She hadn't really had a moment to think about any of it thoroughly.
(Tuesday June 5th)
Marcus had become desperate by Tuesday afternoon after not hearing from Bella. He needed to know what his daughter was thinking and he didn't really know how to approach her. Caius was keeping his distance and Aro wasn't much help. The only thing that calmed him was the fact that Bella and he had begun to text each other. (Yes, you read correctly)
Bella was just as surprised as the pack with Marcus being able to work a cell phone. Marcus made sure to explain to her how Aro insisted everyone in the castle had a working knowledge of all modern technology. He may be thousands of years old but he isn't stupid.
Bella decided that she would tell Marcus a definitive decision by the end of the week on what would happen. She needed time to better process everything that had happened and some time apart would help.
(Thursday June 7th)
By Thursday Bella had begin to worry about the situation with the Cullen's. There were rumors flying around town and Carlisle was needed badly back at the hospital. Bella asked Marcus to Punish the Cullen's and return them by the end of the week. She knew there was nothing she could do to stop their punishment but she did at least want Carlisle back. There was a lumberyard accident on Wednesday that required the help of all available doctors and Carlisle was one of their best. Charlie asked her if she knew anything about their abrupt departure much to his own dislike of interrogating his daughter. People had a nasty way of spreading rumors on half truths or no truths at all.
The kings spoke of what to do and decided that Caius and Aro would return to Volterra to deal with the Cullen's. Marcus would stay behind with Alec, Demetri, Santiago and three other lower guard members. Marcus did however ask Aro to punish them extra harder for him in his absence. Aro and Caius left for Volterra that day as soon as the sun went down. They flew in a private jet with some of their guard while the rest took the long way.
Sam was happy to have so many leeches leave. He just wished they had all left instead of leaving a few behind.
(Friday June 8th)
An entire week away from Marcus made things clearer for Bella. She could see how this little development complicated and freed her life at the same time. She just wished she knew what to do, her mind wouldn't stop over thinking for her.
She did however receive a big surprise when she returned home from school that afternoon. There was a FedEx box waiting for her from Volterra. She took the package inside with her and opened it on the counter. She was not prepared for what was inside. Caius had sent her an 'I am sorry' present. It was a beautiful small gold crown. It wasn't gaudy or flashy like you would expect a crown to be. It was made out of dozens of intricate leaves on a vine that wrapped around the head with small diamonds nestled between them like hidden berries. In the front there was a single large teardrop shaped diamond dangling. Bella didn't know what to do with it. She was touched by the gesture but unsure where to hide it from Charlie. At the bottom of the box there was a note from Caius. He apologized for his actions and wished to make it up to her by giving her one of his most prized possessions. At the bottom he wrote "Ti amo Principessa." (I love you princess)
Jake was pissed off when he came to her house after school. He hated the leech king showering her with something so extravagant. He was also jealous he couldn't d that for her. It was just his luck for another vampire to appear who could give her the world, literally. Bella reassured him that it was Caius way of apologizing and that she valued sentimental gifts more than anything, like the wolf charm he gave her.
(Thursday June 7th)
Marcus decided to acquire better accommodations while he would be staying in Washington waiting for an answer. He rented a house in the outskirts of Seattle that better suited his needs. Staying in the woods was filthy at best and with the constant rain it only made things worse. He made sure to send Bella the address in case she needed to reach him or visit him. (He hoped)
He had the guard change their attire as well as to better blend in with their neighbors. Alec was the only one who didn't like it since he still looked like a child and dressing his age was something he hated. Demetri on the other hand loved it.
The homes were very far apart but a relaxed environment helped him. All he could do to stay sane was texting or talking to his daughter every day and going through all of the information he gathered on her. Her hospital visits alone could keep him occupied for days. He checked to make sure she wasn't being abused as well. He discovered on his own that his daughter was just very accident prone.
He read up on her mother and father as well. He wanted to make sure they were good people. Marcus wasn't impressed by Renee but he was impressed by Charlie. He was happy to know that a man of authority could protect her.
Marcus just waited out the hours until Bella would tell him what was going to happen. He needed to know where their relationship stood after Caius stomped all over it.
(Friday June 8th late at night)
Aro made sure that only the guards with the discipline to control their thoughts were present with Caius and himself when they brought the Cullen's up for punishment.
Caius wasn't happy about letting them live but he was happy to take out his anger on the people who hurt his niece.
Alice and Jasper were punished first. Aro knew how to hurt them the most so he had Alice and Jasper face each other as Felix tore them apart slowly. Jasper kept himself together by sheer luck. Alice was the only incentive he had, plus they starved him so he knew he was too weak to fight.
Aro told them that once they put themselves back together then they could leave.
When Jasper wondered why they were being allowed to live Aro told them cryptically that Bella pleaded for mercy for them but not herself. Alice wanted to weep for losing her sister to a stupid mistake. She should have stayed.
Aro told them that the second part of their punishment was to be banished to Russia and not be allowed to live or interact with humans for 200 years. Aro wanted them isolated and far away from contact with all humans as to prevent another incident such as this from happening again. He would also check on them regularly to make sure they hadn't broken any rules, if they had they would be put to death.
It hurt Alice but she agreed since it meant she could live. Jasper agreed as well since they had escaped death thanks to Bella. His guilt only grew with that knowledge.
Esme and Carlisle were a different story. Aro once again told them they too would be on 'probation' as well for 200 years but to a different place. Esme and Carlisle would be confined to Italy after Carlisle finished out the year in Forks helping the town. Carlisle was curious as to why he would be allowed to return. Aro didn't give him an answer to his thought. He did however tell him that he and Esme would be regularly 'screened' for the next 200 years. Carlisle understood that this was a light punishment. He just wished Esme wouldn't have to go through the pain of being dismembered and reassembled.
Caius dismembered the couple himself and happily enjoyed the sounds of their pain, especially Carlisle's. Aro had their bodies collected and taken to another room where they could reassemble themselves. He wasn't going to let them go until they were clear on his other rules. Carlisle and Esme would be the only two vampires outside of the Volturi to know the secret of Marcus and Bella.
Emmett and Rosalie were a difficult decision to make. Aro had discussed this issue with Marcus and Caius at length before they left. Marcus knew that Emmett still loved Bella and wished to reconnect with her. Bella had also confided in Marcus how much she had loved him and how his abandonment hurt her more because of it. Rosalie was openly mean to Bella and Aro could also see that it was out of jealousy and pettiness. Emmett was going to be punished almost as severely as Edward but Aro decided that his punishment would be worst if it was mental since those scars would never truly heal.
When Rosalie and Emmett came into the throne room Aro read them once again and what he found only cemented his decision. Emmett still loved her and wanted to undo his mistakes while Rosalie wished they had turned her or killed her.
Aro told them about their exile. They would live out the next 200 years of isolation with Alice and Jasper in Russia. Misery loves company after all.
Aro had Emmett subdued by Felix and two other guards while Jane used her power on Rosalie once more. Emmett then watched as Aro himself dismembered his wife. Aro had a guard gather Rosalie's body and take it out of the room. Emmett sobbed for his wife. He didn't know why they were both still alive or why they were being separated.
"Tell me Emmett. Why didn't you return for Bella when the family separated?" Aro asked as he slowly made his way to Emmett.
"I wanted to but Rosalie kept telling me to wait. She thought that Edward would eventually cave and return for her." Emmett said. He hated to have never told her he was sorry.
"Well, he didn't. If he had then she wouldn't have had to face us the way she did." Aro said. He was going to torture his mind for his betrayal and he was going to enjoy it.
"Is she dead?" Emmett asked with lingering hope in his voice. He so desperately wished she was safe and alive somewhere with the pack far far away.
"Need you truly ask?" Aro replied.
Emmett broke down and sobbed as his heart broke. He should have protected her. He was losing a sister all over again. He shouldn't have listened to the family. Aro was pleased with the level of devotion the boy still held to his niece. Pity he would use it against him.
"Remarkable. Here you stand with your heart breaking for a mortal when this could have been avoided if you had simply turned her as our laws state." Aro said circling him. "You could have avoided her pain, her tears. She mourned your loss as she wept alone in her room haunted by your memory." He yelled by the end. Emmett couldn't take it. Images of Bella crying in pain swarmed in his mind like a vile poison dissolves in liquid infecting it completely.
"The wolves tried to protect her but they were no match to us. She bargained for their lives with her own." Aro said coldly into Emmett's ear. He was slumped on the floor being held partially up by his arms.
"Please stop." Emmett pleaded.
"That's what she said." Aro said happily. It only cut Emmett deeper.
"For what it's worth she did truly love you. And in the end she proved it by choosing to die." Aro said.
Emmett looked at him confused.
"Let me clarify." Aro said noting the confusion in his eyes. "Since she came willingly with us in order to spare the wolves we gave her a choice. Turn and watch you and your family be executed for your crimes or die in order to allow you all to live." Aro said maliciously.
"NOOOO!" Emmett yelled as he was released and fell to the floor. He was racked with guilt. He couldn't prove his devotion to her but she had to him even after all the pain he had caused her. His mere existence was torture if every moment he was alive meant she was dead.
"You would have chosen to die for her?" Aro asked.
"Yes." Emmett sobbed. "I would have gladly given my life for hers." He said as he wept. His tears burned his eyes as they were absorbed back into his body. He wished for the simple release of tears to mourn Bella. But he would take the pain of his venom stinging his eyes. He deserved worse.
Aro watched in fascination at the reduced weeping pile of the giant fighter at his feet. The guard was obviously surprised by his devotion. The mere thought of her not existing reduced him to nothing. Aro thought there was redemption for this vampire yet.
"Let me help you feel a fraction of her pain." Aro said.
Then Felix dove for his head and separated it from his body. He held it up so he could witness his own dismemberment.
It didn't matter to Emmett. He would take the pain gladly. Anything to ease his guilt.
(Saturday June 9th a few hours before dawn)
Aro had ensured that at least Alice and Jasper had left with an escort to Russia. He didn't want them to even see the others. Just in case. Esme, Carlisle, Rosalie and Emmett were far away enough from Edward to not be heard in his mind.
Edward was terrified at the faith of his family, at least when they were down in the dungeon together suffering they knew they were all alive. Now he had gone hours without hearing or 'seeing' them at all.
Jane came to collect him herself and inflicted her power on him as soon as he was within reach. She took her time taking him to the throne room of course. Her masters wouldn't mind. In fact, they would prefer it.
Edward was released from Jane's power only to find himself held by four different guards on each limb. He couldn't move an inch not that he wanted to. He deserved everything he was about to receive.
Aro reached for Edwards's throat as he wrapped his fingers around his windpipe clenching tightly.
"Yes, you do." Aro said.
Edward asked him a dozen questions in his mind about Bella and his family. It was his only way of speaking at the moment.
"In due time. There's no rush." Aro said as he took his seat back on the throne.
Edward was confused as to why he was guarding his thoughts so much until he understood that it wouldn't be Aro dispensing the punishment.
Caius appeared in front of him grinning devilishly. Then all he knew was pain.
Yes, that is how I am leaving this chapter. A bit of a cliff hanger so sorry. I was actually getting such a headache making this chapter because in my mind it was like a movie with a lot of cutaway scenes so I had no idea how to write that. Well, let me clarify a few things that a few of you detail observers might have questions on.
How did Caius gift arrive so fast?
He didn't send it. It was Athenadora. He had her do it for him since she was in Volterra and knew where his belongings were.
Why are there rumors circling around town about the Cullen's?
Aro read Carlisle's mind before he had them sent to Volterra. He saw Carlisle's plea to leave everything wrapped up for the townspeople and make their disappearance plausible. So, Aro had sent the hospital a note written in Carlisle's handwriting that Edward had become horribly addicted to drugs and taken off with their money when he found out that he was going to be sent to rehab. So the family went searching for him and asked for some time off.
