hey everyone! kris here! wow, its been a long long time, hasnt it?
I know I kind of abandoned this story and many others, it wasn't intentional. I saw the lion king au post again, so it made me wanna continue this. There has been a time skip, and our kids are grown up, teenagers. Im gonna put Mako as like 17, korra as 16, and bolin as 16. Korra believes shes totally older than bolin, as does Mako. She doesn't remember too much from her childhood, just the death of her father and rise as evil uncle. A plothole i had with this story is how does unalaq think hes gonna be a new avatar? he wants to unite with vaatu and basically do what the firenation did, wipe out most of the next element in the avatar cycle, earth. He thinks Korra perished in the blizzard or the spirits got her, so hes preparing to snuff out anyone else who could stand in his way. The rumor of the last avatar's demise has everyone scared and unnerved, and soon unalaq's dark actions with the spirits will be heard of. For now, Korra is still in denial, guilty and unwilling to accept her avatar title. She thinks she can just give it up, not realizing thats now how it works... nobody ever taught her. This story is gonna follow most of how book two went and ended, except asami will be added soon. Enjoy!
Years later….
"Hey! Get back here!" the angry vendor cried as Korra and Bolin fled, panicked, but laughing the whole way. "You need to pay for those!"
"Take an I.O.U!" Korra shouted back, clutching the dumplings she had in her hands, and pushing onward. She playfully sent a water whip at Bolin, and he jumped, bending some earth back her way. The two continued on, until they were fully engrossed in a playfight, laughing and eating their stolen treasure the whole way. They soon came to an alley close to the factory, out of breath.
"That was awesome!" Bolin cried, laughing. "Did you see that guy's face!?" Korra smirked.
"He didn't see us coming! Please sir… can I use your map? Classic!" Bolin looked up as his older brother Mako walked out of the alley they were standing by, covered in sweat and dirt, fresh from work at the factory. He went white.
"Uh, Korra…." his sister was too excited to notice.
"And I grabbed them right outta the cart! And we knocked all his stuff over! And we got some yuans! And we got away!" Mako started to listen, crossing his arms and narrowing his eyes. Bolin tried again.
"Korra… uh…hey…"
"And then there's Mako…" she mussed her hair up so it was messy and scowled, stomping around. "I'm Mako, blah blah blah… get a job… dont steal… say thank you… I'm always grumpy!" Bolin looked about ready to wet himself. Korra quirked an eyebrow. "What? Come on, Bo… that one always gets you."
"What's wrong with a job?" Mako spoke up, and Korra jumped ten feet, spinning around at once. She gulped.
"H-hey big bro! How are you?" she smiled nervously. "When did you get here? How much of that did you overhear?"
"Enough." He murmured angrily. "Really, Korra? Stealing again?"
"It was my idea…" Bolin lied, hoping to take some heat off his sister.
"Yeah, right… and I'm a hog monkey." he glared at Korra. "It's always her idea, no matter what the trouble is. She dreams the schemes up."
"We had fun, and got paid. You should try it sometime, cool guy."
"Is prison fun? Do you think I have the yuans to get you out?"
"You got a job, don't you?"
Mako groaned angrily. "UGH! You don't get it! You never will!"
Korra crossed her arms, looking at the ground. "I didn't get caught, who cares?"
"That doesn't matter!" Mako countered. "One day you will, and you're gonna get into a mess I can't fix! You're the older sibling here!" he pointed to Bolin. "You're supposed to be setting a good example for him and this is what you teach him?"
"Oh, like he's innocent!" Korra yelled. "He came right along with me, I didn't force him!"
"Yeah, I know… and that has me disappointed in itself… I raised you better than that, Bolin!" the earthbender looked at the ground in shame. "We have a place now… I work hard at the factory all day and all you two want to do is goof off and put it in jeopardy! You wont get a job, you cant help out...You want to go back on the street?"
"Like the place we have now is soooo stable." Korra said, rolling her eyes. "We're stowing away in a basement of a gym, and once the owner finds out out, we're back outside anyway." she shrugged. "Besides, I lose every job I take! Nobody likes me!"
"Nobody likes you because you can't follow simple orders and you always start trouble, so they fire you!" Mako shot back. Korra huffed.
"Their loss… we'll be okay even if we lose this place. We'll find another one….what will be will be."
"I'm getting sick of this carefree act you got going on, Korra." Mako said with annoyance, dropping the subject. "Pretty soon you're gonna realize I'm right." his little sister rolled her eyes.
"You? Never."
They began to start walking home together. Korra was quiet for a few minutes before she took the yuans she stole out of her pocket, shoving them into Mako's.
"Here… it isn't much… but I'm gonna try to get a real job… I promise."
"Id rather you return them to the man you took them from."
"He wants to cut my head off, so id keep em."
"Thank you Korra. That's very mature of you."
Suddenly, a cry of pain interrupted them. It was coming from the gym they secretly called home. Mako held a hand up and they all stopped, listening.
"HELP! SOMEONE! GET AWAY!" Bolin's eyes went wide.
"Okay, everyone be quiet… we'll sneak around the-"
"TIME TO BE A GOOD PERSON!" Korra screamed, running for the double doors of the training area. Mako smacked his forehead angrily, chasing after her.
"Spirits, Korra! What did I just say!?"
"Yeah! Good person time!" Bolin yelled, running even further ahead. Korra kicked the doors open with a loud SLAM, and watched a chubby old man being held up by three triad members, a flame at his throat.
At once, Korra snapped her fingers, and sent a water whip soaring through the air. On cue, Bolin slammed his feet down on the ground, and made a smoke screen. Korra threw the whip into the cloud, sending the coughing gangsters flying, one by one.
One snuck through the dusty air, smirking as he pulled a knife and crept up toward Korra's back.
"Oh no you don't!" Mako yelled, jumping up behind him and slamming a ball of fire into his side. He went soaring through the gym before landing against the wall. The last two thugs began to square off with Mako and Korra as Bolin got the injured old man to his feet.
"Right and left!" Korra ordered, and Mako took off running on her other side. He stuck his hand out, and as she jumped up, he boosted her even higher. She tackled one guy to the ground in a tussle, and Mako fought with the last one. Everything ended so fast, and before it had even been a minute both men were down and out. It was over.
The only sound now were the pained groans of the triad members at their feet. Once they began to gather themselves up, one glared at Mako dangerously.
"You're a filthy traitor I see… who fed you all those years, huh!?" Mako narrowed his eyes.
"That's not me anymore… I suggest you leave this place."
"Oh, for now… but you better watch yourself. You got enemies in the wrong places pal…" the men quickly fled, barely able to stand. Bolin let out a sigh of relief.
"Man, that was scary… are you okay, sir?" he looked the old man over, who was staring at them in disbelief and awe. "Sir?"
"I've never seen bending like that before…" he murmured, smiling at Mako. "So coordinated… you kick ass!"
"We have a lot of downtime… well, some of us do…" Mako teased, looking at Korra.
"We're siblings, so we're in sync a lot…" she replied, rubbing her neck sheepishly. "Anyway we heard you yelling so we came over to see what happened… are you okay? What did those thugs want with you?"
The old man frowned. "Bah!... they wanted me to throw a match and I said no. I cost them a lot of money i didn't have, so they came to finish the job… you saved my life… I owe you a lot."
"You don't owe us a thing. Mako and I have dealt with the triads in the past… we worked for em." Bolin explained. Mako shot him a death glare. He wasn't proud of their past. The old man narrowed his eyes.
"What, you guys some kinda thugs too?" Korra shook her head.
"No, but you have to do what you have to do. We were starving and homeless, and we had to make it work. It's behind us."
"You must be well off now, I assume… the name's Toza by the way… I own this place."
"Not exactly, but… yeah…" Bolin murmured. His eyes lit up. "Wait, you own this whole thing!? And what was that about a match?" Toza smiled.
"Oh, yeah… I manage a few pro bending teams… most of em are losers though… only here for the check… most of em don't care about the sport at all, yknow?"
"I love pro bending!" Korra yelled with excitement. "I listen all the time on the radio…"
"You guys could really have a shot, from what I saw just now… listen, I don't always do this for everyone, but what are you guys up to right now? Are you free?"
"A hundred percent!" Bolin spoke before Mako could even open his mouth. Toza crossed his arms.
"Tell you what… I see greatness here, a really good chance for a team that's gonna knock every other team on their asses… drop whatever you're doing, and let me teach you what I know. You'll be in the finals in no time."
"I have a job, actually." Mako murmured. "I cant run around and play sports all day."
"I'll double what the factory is offering, and if you guys get good enough where people will bet, triple it. Winnings will be pouring in so fast your heads will spin. I got a couple of street rats holed up in my basement, but once I get em out of there, we can start training down below." Korra hid a laugh behind her hand.
"Funny you mention that... We're actually those street rats… we're really sorry, it's just winter was coming and the gym was always open…"
"Water under the bridge." Toza answered. "You never took anything, so ill drop it. Tell you what… I have an attic with two stories and a few bedrooms I don't use, mostly for storage… it's yours, rent free… all you gotta do is say yes to being my new prodigies."
"Yes, yes, double yes!" Bolin yelled with excitement. "A real room! A real bed!" he and Korra began to dance around before he stopped, and looked at Mako.
"I need all three yes's…" Toza murmured, locking eyes with the firebender. He sighed, looking at Bolin and Korra's excited faces before smiling a little himself.
"What the hell… what can we lose? Yes, we're in." Korra and Bolin howled in excitement, and Korra scooped up her grumpy big brother in a hug. Mako yelped in surprise. When had his sister become that strong? Toza watched them all with a smile, shaking his head. He fished into his pocket, pulling out a set of keys.
"Here, kid." He tossed them to Bolin, as Korra was too busy roughhousing with Mako to notice. "Move your things in whenever you want. I expect you at practice first thing in the morning… 5am sharp."
"Yes sir!" Bolin yelled, jumping out of the way as the other two siblings stumbled past, Mako with korra in a headlock, giving her a much deserved noogie. Toza nodded, leaving them be, and the young earthbender sighed happily. "Our luck is finally starting to turn, guys… we have a home…"
"We've always had one, Bo…" Mako murmured, looking at them both. "Just this time, we have a place to put it… come on, lets grab whatever we have and get this place going, huh?"
"Im so glad we decided to kick all that ass today…" Korra said with a smirk, racing to the basement with Bolin in toe. Mako watched them go, praying their luck would finally hold.
