Chapter 30: You ain't seen nothing yet
Leah's Pov
Me a high Alpha? Adam, Cevin and Elijah were watching me expectantly, but I felt overwhelmed. I turned my back on them and walked to the elevator never looking back. Elijah fell into step besides me, but I refused to look at him. More than one wolf shot me a look of sympathy as I passed by.
Once everyone else was out of ear shot Elijah said,"Leah".
He spoke quietly but with such unmistakable command that my eyes jerked up to meet his.
I felt my body react to the searching look he gave me. He stepped closer and leaned in slightly. I leaned toward him savoring the sweet anticipation that rushed through me. For several seconds my awareness narrowed down to just us in our own little bubble. My heart jumped when I realized what I was doing.
I used my hand as a barrier before he could kiss me, "Elijah I...I can't."
We stared at each other as something passed between us. A flicker of understanding that I can't really explain. He ardently wanted my forgiveness. However, not a single part of me felt capable of granting it. At least not yet. His betray was just to new...to raw.
The most amazing thing happened next. Elijah dropped his eyes. I felt a rush of tenderness followed by warmth.
The Alpha Rex stood there with dominance exuding from every pore, and surrendered. He did it just for me...to meet my needs. He yielded to my need for privacy for the fight I was having with myself.
"Thank You," I whispered wholeheartedly.
He pulled back a little, "Take all the time you need. Just remember causing you pain was never my intent."
We both turned as the elevator doors opened to reveal a uncharacteristically flustered Delta Allen.
Elijah acknowledged him, "Delta Allen."
I sighed, "What are you doing here? It's your night off."
He smiled sheepishly, "Mr. Littlesea might have sent me a text?"
I looked at Collin who was trying to appear innocent, "Well?"
He shrugged, "I called him in case I needed back-up."
I was confused, "What?"
"With all due respect Leah you can be difficult," he replied
I had to suppress a smile. "Really?" I teased.
He kept his eyes glued to the floor, "Yes."
I snorted, "Lets go."
I thought I heard someone snicker, but I couldn't be sure. I looked over to find Elijah speaking softly to Delta Allen in their language. Both of them looked back at me.
Elijah's eye's met mine briefly before he looked away. All I saw there was empathy and remorse. "Goodnight Leah," He said quietly.
I swallowed, "Nite Elijah."
At first I refused to speak to anyone during the drive home. I didn't blame Delta Allen. He used to be part of the Elite Black Guard. However, Collin should have known better. He's aware that I have little tolerance for lies and secrets being kept from me.
It all started when Sam first phased back in La Push. I feel that the secrecy which surrounded the new pack made everything worse. Sometimes I wonder if my dad might still be alive if my first phase was not so traumatic.
I rested my head against the seat, "No more secrets guys do you understand me?"
The silence in the car shifted becoming awkward.
Jacob's Pov
The persistent buzzing of my cell phone drew me from a deep sleep. I peeped at the display with one eye and was suddenly wide awake.
Miriella stirred slightly and I was distracted by her warm body wrapped around mine, her head resting over my heart. I slowly worked my way out of bed and went into the other room.
My phone buzzed again and this time I answered it, "Seth?"
"Leah just found out about Korzka and isn't taking well," he replied.
I sighed, "Well we knew this was coming."
I had been hoping the imprint would help, but this is Leah we're talking about.
"Should I call the pack meeting?" he asked.
"Yes make it first thing in the morning down at Ivan's Peak." I answered.
He hung up without saying goodbye. I sent out a text deliberately keeping it short.
Me: Leah I will tell the others about Korzka. Let me handle it.
She let me sweat for a good ten minutes before she deigned to answer.
Leah: Go right ahead.
I couldn't get back to sleep so woke Miriella to tell her I was leaving. The sun was rising when I arrived at Ivan's Peak.
I found everyone huddled around a fire, near the vacant cabin where we hold pack meetings.
"Good morning," I said taking a seat while looking around.
Seth looked nervous. Embry was watching me curiously. Old Quil and Sue seemed focused on the fire. Sam was resting against a tree with Emily cuddled in his lap. I scented traces of morning sickness covered by mouthwash on her and assumed she wasn't feeling well.
I cleared my throat, "I won't waste time beating around the bush. We've officially been linked to Pack Hemming."
Sam frowned, "The Royal Pack? Why are we involved with them?"
Old Quil cleared his throat, "While Pack Hemming is the official pack of the Royal Family. It's to big for the Alpha Rex to run personally. It's made up of the royals and packs linked to them."
Sam made an impatient gesture with his hands, "That doesn't answer my question."
Seth stood up, "Can I tell them Jacob?"
I shrugged, "Sure, sure."
"We have every involvement with them," He said smugly staring right at Sam.
I sighed inwardly. Seth hasn't totally forgiven Sam for that whole mess with Leah. He doesn't care that everyone involved has moved on with their lives.
He paused then announced dramatically, "Lee Lee's imprint is really Matthew Korzka Hemming King of Lucacini."
The reaction in the room was not what I expected. Sue and Old Quil exchanged a look I couldn't decipher. Embry shook his head smiling at Seth. Sam burst out laughing while Emily squealed drawing all eyes to herself.
"Leah landed herself a king?" she asked grinning from ear to ear.
Sam snorted, "He's joking baby."
I studied Sam's face surprised by the disbelief I saw there.
"Jacob why are we really here?" he asked tiredly rubbing his hands over his face
Old Quil answered for me, "No he's serious."
Sam stood up abruptly glancing from Old Quil back to me, "Really?"
"Yes," I replied.
Some emotion I couldn't decipher flickered in his eyes.
He glanced at Sue who nodded her head, "Why aren't you surprised?"
Her lips quirked into a smile, "I figured this out a long time ago."
Seth looked doubtful, "How?"
She shrugged, "Adam told me after I recognized the same tattoos, on both The Rex and his coronation pictures."
"But he had on long sleeves," Seth argued.
Sue winked at him, "Not on his hands he didn't."
Photographic memories run in her family. She has one, Claire has one, and I think Leah does although I'm not sure.
Sam smirked at Emily, "I never pictured Leah with royalty."
His face became serious as he looked back at me, "This could mean trouble for the pack. Isn't there some kind of feud between The Rex and Lady Miriella's family?"
I sighed, "Yes."
Sam nodded, "For the record we loyal to you, if things get dicey. I hope Leah's loyalties don't change."
Sue turned to him, "What are you implying Sam?"
He shook his head emphatically, "Let's face it Sue. Leah will probably have to choose Between Lady Miriella's family and her Imprint. Then the rest of us may have to choose sides. Things could get messy fast."
Sue put her hands on her hips and walked right into his personal space, "I'm dating the First Beta and it's never come up."
I said, "Yea I've made a point of staying neutral."
Emily said, "You're not a wolf aunt Sue. Think about it. Leah might not have that luxury being so close to the throne."
Old Quil spoke up, "I agree with Sam and Emily. We 're going to have to be really careful since you and Leah have imprinted on opposite sides. This kind of strife could easily tear our pack apart."
Leah's Pov
The next day passed in a rush and I buried myself in my work. Interestingly, Elijah sent me several gifts. The first was a gourmet lunch served to everyone on my shift at the hospital. Next I received an invitation to join him on the military base to close the National Pack Run. Finally, I received that painting he promised me the day we met
Jacob and Seth have been conspicuously absent. That's fine because I wasn't planning on speaking to either of them. I suspected they were planning something and I was right.
That evening everything came to a head, when I arrived home to find Adam's uncle Daniel, Jacob, Seth and Old Quil waiting for me.
