Standing on top of a flag-less pole, Luffy pulled his straw hat off and set it against his back. Resting a hand to his forehead, he shaded his eyes and skimmed the town that him, Sanji and Zoro stumbled across.
Sanji leaned against the flagpole and reached into his coat pocket. Grabbing a lone cigarette, he put it between his lips and looked up at his captain. "What'd you see?"
Luffy scratched at the back of his head. From what he could see, there wasn't any sign of life anywhere and all that he could hear were a few chirping birds.
Puckering his lips to the side with disappointment, he jumped down from the pole and landed next to Zoro. "I don't see anything."
"There has to be someone," Zoro said, surveying the area.
Lighting his cigarette and inhaling the nicotine with a sigh of relief, Sanji tucked the lighter into his suit jacket and then picked up the empty bag that he'd been carrying. Turning his back on them he waved a hand over his shoulder.
"Well, while you two look for someone, I'm going to look for dinner. There has to be fresh fruit or an animal somewhere on this island."
While Sanji went down a path in the opposite direction of them, Luffy and Zoro headed into the town.
Moving from one house to the next, Luffy yanked on every single doorknob that he could find-persistent to locate that one unlocked door. "Hello?!"
Zoro looked through the window of a tavern. The entire room was empty and the chairs were neatly stacked on top of the tables. Taking a step back, he leaned to the side and looked around the building.
Early on, he noticed that the buildings were kept up with and that the plants were watered and pruned. So even though there wasn't anyone around, he had his suspicions that there was life somewhere on the island.
Standing in the middle of the town, Luffy looked from his right to his left and then from his left to his right. With a thoughtful hum, he directed his attention in front of him. That's when he saw a house on top of a mountain.
Extending his arm outward, he pointed to it. "What about that place?"
Zoro crossed his arms and examined the building. It was an ample house with hundreds of windows. If anyone was to know about their arrival, it would be someone that was residing inside that specific estate. He didn't have a doubt that they could see the entire island from up there.
Zoro debated whether or not to climb the mountain. He knew that it'd take a least two hours to reach the top. Or at least, that was his estimated time frame.
While he disputed the trip, it was clear that Luffy had already made up his mind. And without warning, he stretched his body back and wrapped an arm around Zoro. Tugging him close, he aimed straight for the mountain.
Zoro could barely comprehended what was going on until the last second.
"Wha- N- No!"
He could barely get a word out and before he could stop what was about to happen, it was too late. In a matter of seconds, Luffy had them both launched into the air and headed for the house. And it didn't take them long to reach their destination.
When they descended from the sky, Zoro crashed into a brick wall. Climbing out of the rubble, he dusted his shoulders off and turned a sharp eye to Luffy.
"What the hell!"
"Woah," Luffy gaped, staring up at the house with his neck stretched back, "it's huge!"
When his nerves calmed down, Zoro stepped back and looked at the house. Even though a brick fence blocked off a majority of the building, half of it could still be seen from where he stood. It was a lot bigger up close.
"Do you smell that?" Luffy's head snapped back into place. Raising his chin up, he sniffed the air. "It smells delicious!"
Before Zoro could stop him, Luffy took the lead and ran through the man-made hole in the wall and across freshly mowed grass.
Grumbling under his breath, Zoro climbed through the wall and made his way across the yard. As he walked along the moist grass, he took note to the endless gardens that surrounded the front yard and the trees that were covered in fresh pears. The plants were pruned and groomed just like in the village and yet, there wasn't a gardener in sight.
Finding the main door of the estate, Luffy pounded on it and yanked at the knobs. "Hello!?"
"Maybe it's abandoned," Zoro suggested, "just like the village."
"But I smell food," Luffy whined, "so there has to be someone!"
Zoro lifted his nose to the air and sniffed. "I don't smell anything."
"You don't smell that?" Luffy continued to tug on the door. "It smells sweet!"
The thought of food clouded Luffy's mind and judgement. And with one hard pull, he yanked the door right off of the hinges.
Zoro's slapped a hand over his face and drug it down. "What're you doing?!"
"Meat, meat, meat!" Luffy tossed the door carelessly aside and jogged in place. Then, with a running start, he deserted Zoro and made his way down a hallway-disregarding the fact that he just broke into someone's home.
"You moron!" Zoro shouted after his captain. "You don't know who lives here!"
Are you kidding me! He thought before sprinting after Luffy. Because the house had multiple corridors that lead to even more corridors, it didn't take Zoro long to get lost. The layout of the house made it into a real labyrinth.
Frustrated, he stopped running and ended up in an office. Standing in the middle of the room, he scratched at his head. "Now where am I?"
He examined the room with a keen eye. Between the surrounding bookshelves and the desk that sat in the corner of the room, there wasn't a speck of dust. He knew that someone had to be keeping it tidy.
Continuing to observed the room, his eye wondered to a realistic painting above the desk. Suddenly, his palms began to sweat and his body tensed. The person in the painting was easily recognizable.
Dammit.
On a quick foot, he turned around and dashed out of the room and back into the confusing hallways. His pace quickened by the second. He knew that if Luffy were to take one wrong turn, there would be trouble for the Straw Hat Pirates.
Trouble they didn't need.
Taking a sharp turn, he cursed under his breath. "Figures he'd break into this house!"
Finally, he caught the scent of food. Following the smell, he was led right into a dining hall. There he found his captain sitting at a table. The table was set up for a feast with plates, forks, knives, spoons, glasses and more. Even the food was set out and ready to be eaten.
Which is was-by Luffy.
Zoro's fingers clenched around the hilt of his sword. "We have to go."
"Huh?" Luffy hardly acknowledged him. Piling meats, vegetables and treats onto his plate, he drooled eagerly. The food was still hot, steaming from the inside out.
"Luffy, we have to go."
Zoro yanked a plate from his hand, but it didn't phase him and he didn't stop eating.
"Try the pear sauce on this."
Luffy grinned when a plate was offered to him. "Thanks!" Grabbing the plate, he tilted his head back and poured everything into his mouth.
"Wow," he muffled between the food, "that's good!"
Zoro paused, blinked and then raised his eyes to the person that handed Luffy the plate. It wasn't who he expected and yet he couldn't help but mutter "Shit." when he saw them.
