Rolling out a log that was behind the forest brush, Bitsy moved it across the backyard and in front of a burnt-out fire. After she made sure that it was secured in its spot with four metal stakes, pounding them firmly into the ground, she walked back to the forest. Rolling another log out, she moved it onto the other side of the fire-pit. When she was done securing the second log, she took a tired seat on it.
Pulling out a handkerchief from between her breasts, she wiped it over her forehead. "I'm getting too old for this," she decided, tucking the cloth back into her shirt.
Tying her purple hair back into a loose bun, strands of hair falling across her cheeks, Bitsy stood back up. Setting her hands on her hips, she thoughtfully looked around.
"Firewood, check. A place to sit, check. All that is missing is-"
Bitsy paused and looked towards the forest when she heard voices. Patiently she waited and then watched as two figures emerged from behind a gathering of pear trees.
She smiled when Luffy and Viske came into view. "Ah yes, all that is missing is the guest of honor."
"I'm sorry again," Viske frowned, "she gets stupid sometimes."
"It's okay! I'm just ready to eat!"
"Me too! After all of that, I could eat a whole pig!"
Bitsy opened her mouth to speak, but she closed it when she noticed that Viske was tugging a net behind him. Curious, she squinted her eyes and stuck her neck out, trying to get a better look at the object.
"Viske," she said with a frown, "what's that?"
Viske stopped and looked at Bitsy with surprise. He didn't realize that she was standing a few feet away.
"Oh... uh... well you see," he mumbled with a nervous chuckle. Rubbing at the back of his head, he let go of the net and took a step to the side so that she could see what was in it.
When Bitsy realized that Mae was the object in the net, she quickly hurried over to their side.
"Viske!" She scolded, kneeling down next to Mae. "What were you thinking?!"
"She wouldn't stop attacking him!" He defended, gesturing to Luffy. "I had no other choice!"
"Did you try to reason with her?"
"It's Mae, there's no reasoning with her once she's in murder mode!"
Bitsy sighed. "I will handle her. Take Luffy inside and prep the s'mores. I'll call for you once I have everything under control."
"I'm going to hurt all of you," Mae mumbled weakly, staring up at them with pure hate.
Standing back up, Bitsy ushered Viske along. "Go on now, and don't eat any of the marshmallows! We'll roast them when the sun sets."
"Come on," Viske grinned, grabbing Luffy by the arm and taking a running start. "This will be fun! Granny makes the best graham crackers!"
Grinning, Luffy ran with him. "Graham crackers?!"
Once the two were out of sight, Bitsy knelt back down and untangled Mae from the net. Tossing it aside and as far away from them as possible, she brushed hair from Mae's face and smiled.
"Better?"
"What do you think?" Groaning, Mae sat up. "Bitsy, this is a problem."
Bitsy plopped down next to her. "What's a problem?"
"The notorious pirate on our island that hasn't been arrested or reported. That's the problem." Mae ran her fingers through her braid and untangled it. With a sigh, she rubbed and dug her fingers into her forehead. "I understand that I can't single handedly take down the Straw Hat Pirates, but you know what will happen if we don't report this and someone finds out that we didn't report it."
"Who is going to find out? I've already ordered Jessabel not to report this and you know that she never disobeys an order, even if she opposes it. And I am definitely not going to report this. You know that I'm almost a bigger fan than Bartolomeo when it comes to the Straw Hat Pirates. And as for Viske, well you've already seen how happy he is about our unexpected guests."
"But what if someone else finds out that we didn't report this?"
"Who's going to find out? The ships aren't due for a couple more weeks."
"I just don't want to see Viske hurt. This is against our code and if anyone finds out-"
"If you drive those pirates off this island, then you'll see him hurt. Have you seen him this happy before? Other than when you come back from a mission, he's never been this excited about something."
Mae laughed. "You're right. I don't even think he's this excited when I come home."
"Don't be rough on yourself, he's always on his toes waiting for you to come home. This is just something new." Standing up, Bitsy brushed the dirt off of her pants. "You know, he's not made to be a marine. He's made to be-"
"A pirate."
"No. He's made to be what he wants to be. He's a free spirit. And that's how you raised him."
"Was that stupid of me?"
"No, it wasn't. Because of you, he's going to grow up happy with whatever life choices he makes."
"And what if his choice is to actually become a pirate?" Mae shook her head, laughing softly. "I suppose building him a pirate ship slash fort wasn't the best idea."
"Building that god forsaken fort was the worst idea that you've ever come up with. It's not only a risk to have it on this island, but it pushed him towards piracy."
"Your words are so reassuring," Mae mumbled, gnawing on her lower lip.
Bitsy smiled and offered her a hand. "But he loves the fort. And he loves you. Don't forget that."
Taking her hand, Mae stood up and looked around the backyard. "So, what do we do now?"
"Now," Bitsy wrapped her arm around her shoulders and walked her towards the fire pit, "we finish getting this camp fire set up and then enjoy some s'mores and good conversation with our guest."
