POKEMON: HEART SOUL ADVENTURES
oooooooooo
Chapter 51 - Shadows on Johto
A secret place, in the innermost part of a great cavern dug in the side of a mountain... where a dangerous group of terrorists and criminals had set up their headquarters, waiting for the right time to deal a decisive blow to society. The leader of Team Vicious, the criminal known as the Iron Masked Marauder, was taking a look at a few papers, upon which some very important data were printed... and from time to time, he was glancing up to take a look at the rest of his laboratory, especially at the huge luminous cylinder inside of which the Deoxys they had captured during their raid on Quest Island was now floating. It had been an incredible stroke of good luck to capture that Pokemon... and they already had two of the Plates that would be used in the last stage of their plan. He had to admit, things were turning out in their favor.
The Iron Masked Marauder puts the sheets away and, with fierce joy in his eyes, walked to the cylinder. The alienPokemon cut a really imposing and threatening figure, what with that strange ondulating body of his, and his inexpressive face, seemingly looking at something only it could see. And the faint light surrounding it only made it look even more unnatural.
"I have to say, this Deoxys was a nice bonus!" he said to himself, his fingers stroking the short goatee on his chin. "Sre, it's a creature I am completely unfamiliar with... it will take some time to study it and fully understand its powers. But still, as soon as I master it, I will be able to count on an unstoppable Pokemon! Hehehee... his power to change Forme to adapt to any situation is quite useful."
The sound of steps interrupted his musings, and the Team Vicious leader took a glance behind himself, just in time to see J and a group of grunts, with Damien among them, entering the lab, presumably to report what was going on. Without that superior smirk ever fading, the Marauder turned to J, who stopped a few steps away and nodded.
"Supreme commander, we come to report good news." the malicious Pokemon poacher started. "Our informers confirm that the man we are looking for is currently interned in an high-security prison, in an island far away from Canalave City in Sinnoh. I'd imagine it to be Iron Island, which had been a target of Team Galactic in the past."
The marauder nodded, knowing his second-in-command spoke from personal experience. "I see. And that's another piece of the puzzle sliding in place!" he affirmed with a wicked smirk. "Sure, that man is not to be trusted, but I'm sure he'll do anything to reclaim the power that was taken away from him a few months ago! That includes working with us. And once he's back at the top of his financial empire, he'll be an invaluable ally."
"I will not be the one to doubt your strategy, sir." Hunter J answered, still not completely sold on her new boss' idea. "I would just like to point out that we'd be riding an Arcanine, and we need to know when and how we can get off."
"I got all the information I needed on that man." the masked leader said with a small nod. "And I know how to manipulate him well enough. I don't think there will be anything to worry about."
"I understand." J answered. "Speaking of which, supreme commander, you asked to bring Damien with me. He's here, if you need to talk to him."
The blue-haired young man nodded to the Iron Masked Marauder, who simply waved at him to tell him to dispense with formalities. "You and your Togepi did an excellent work in retrieving the latest Plate and throwing some mud in Team Galactic's plans." he said, averting his glance just a little from the captured Deoxys. "So... instead of giving you orders, I'll give you a prize, one that I'm certain you will appreciate!"
Damien's expression twisted into a wicked grin, and he clenched a fist in satisfaction. "I'm really grateful, sir! What is it about? Whatever it is, I'll be sure to enjoy it to the fullest!" he exclaimed.
Now turning his full attention to Damien, the Iron Masked Marauder put an hand in his cape and took out a shining round stone the size of a man's fist, on whose surface, even in the darkened room, several iridescent shades could be made out. "Very well, Damien. I do know that you want revenge against Ash Ketchum, that annoying brat that has thrown a spanner in our works more than once." he stated. "As it happens, he and his friends somehow managed to escape alive from the attack on Quest Island. This will be your chance to finish the job and destroy Ash Ketchum! This is a Shiny Stone, a powerful artifact that will allow your Togetic to evolve in an even more powerful form that will allow you to get your revenge on Ash and his little friends!"
The Team Vicious leader, under J's impassible glare, handed the Shiny Stone to the blue-haired boy, and after a moment of wonder and incredulity, Damien grinned and grabbed the evolutionary stone with a trembling hand, greedily glaring upon it. He would never have hoped in such luck rigt after his Togepi had evolved... this was his chance to make her evolve again, and use her to finally humiliate Ash in a Pokemon battle! This was his chance to show everyone how strong he was, and he wasn't about to pass it up.
"Heheheheee... Thank you, supreme commander! This is exactly what I wanted!" he laughed triumphantly, raising the shining stone over his head. "A Shiny Stone... thanks to this, my Pokemon will become strong enough to destroy the accursed Ash Ketchum! Thank you, my lord, I will not disappoint you!"
"If you are interested in showing me your gratitude, Damien... do it by showing how reliable you are!" the Marauder said, keeping his cool. "Soon, Team Vicious will assault Pallet Town as a show of force. That will be your greatest chance to get rid of Ash Ketchum."
Damien calmed down, clutching the Shiny Stone in his hand. "Of course, boss. There won't be any problems! I will bring down Ash Ketchum, and show the entire world what Team Vicious can do! It will be a great occasion for sure! Hahahahahaaaaa!"
J shook her head, disapproving of the young grunt's excessive enthusiasm. He was overconfident, and that would bring him to drop his guard. No matter how strong his Pokemon were, without knowing his limits, he would end up doing something stupid and mucking up the plan.
"Who knows what the leader is thinking." the ruthless Pokemon poacher thought to herself. "To give such a powerful Pokemon to such a loose cannon is asking for failure. Of course, assuming the intent is not to get rid of an inopportune element. Well, no matter. What really counts now, is that the next part of the plan goes without a hitch."
oooooooooo
"Alright! And so our journey continues! Get ready, Johto! Ash and his friends are back!" an enthusiastic Ash Ketchum exclaimed, standing on the deck of the large ship that had just set sail from Vermillion City Harbor. His free hand was holding his trademark hat, while his left arm was still in asling, the cast decorated with several colorful signatures. Pikachu, for his part, was standing on the ship's railing, enjoying the fresh, salt-scented sea breeze on his face.
"Pika pi, pika pikachuu?" the electric mouse asked, his cute lightning-shaped tail standing up as he turned to his trainer and best friend, who chuckled jovially before sending a glance at the horizon, expressing that yearning for adventure that was part of his character.
"Don't worry, Pikachu. This will be a training journey as well. There are several Pokemon I ended up neglecting, and I'd like to train them up too!" he said confidently. "Muk, Tauros, Corphish... they all have a right to clean up the cobweb, I think."
"Pika pika!" Pikachu approved, before taking a look at the other members of the team, all of them standing here and there on the deck. Misty was standing rather close to them, looking out towards the sea with a nostalgic expression, as if she was recalling the times when she and Ash, both aged ten at the time, travelled with Brock around Kanto. Professor Oak, who could finally enjoy some relax for once, was standing close to the bar, sipping a fruit juice and dressed in an Hawaiian shirt decorated with flowers, khaki shorts, sandals and sunglasses; Tracey was spending time sketching the sea surrounding them, while Brock was sitting on a nearby bench, giving some training tips to his Happiny and his Croagunk. Some distance away, Ursula was in a pink bikini, sunbathing with a vain expression on her face.
"I can see everyone is enjoying the cruise!" Ash said in amusement. "It is only right, after all. I think we're going to have our work cut out for us, as soon as we get to Olivine City. Who knows what's shaking and baking..."
"Well, at least we get to see just how much Johto has changed in recent times! I'm sure it will be something to see!" Misty commented as she walked up to her friend with Azurill in her arms, and Mantyke floating beside her with his large wings. "Everything okay, Ash? Hope you aren't too worried about what will happen in Johto!"
"Hi, Misty!" Ash answered, a faint blush on his face as he saw her coming. Once again, that strange feeling he felt whenever he was alone with Misty resurfaced... "No, I'm not worried, Misty. I'm sure we will be able to face whatever comes our way!"
Even saying that, Ash couldn't deny that Misty had a point. He couldn't exactly feel completely calm, knowing that they were about to go up against something unknown. They had been risking their lives in Quest Island, and he knew it could go the same way this time as well. He was a little envious of the fact that Brock, Tracey and Ursula managed to keep calm.
Unless of course they were simply doing their best to keep their cool, and they were actually just as nervous as him.
Misty nodded and winked at Ash. "Glad to know you're cool about this, Ash!" she answered. "Admittedly, it would be weird to see you worried about something! You're usually always so ready to charge head-on."
"Pikachu pi..." Pikachu murmured with a short chuckle. The yellow rodent looked at Mantyke and Azurill with an understanding glance, and the manta ray Pokemon rise upwards a little and showed the back of her wings.
"Mantyke!"
Misty giggled as well. "Ourr Pokemon seem to be ready for this too!" she affirmed. "In fact, I think Olivine City Harbor should be in sight soon... think we better pack up and get ready?"
"You got it, Misty! I can't wait to get off!" Ash answered as he picked up Pikachu. The others were starting to get ready as well, seeing that the time of arrival was drawing near.
"Darn... just half an hour to the harbor." Ursula grumbled, standing up from her seat. "I was just about to get a nice tan too! Oh well, better pack up. I'm curious to see how Johto is, after all."
Tracey had just finished his drawing and was showing it to his Venomoth, asking for her opinion. "It's done! So, what do you think, Venomoth? Think it's good enough?" he asked the giant moth, showing her a drawing of a large city laying on the coast, tall buildings and old-style houses standing side by side.
"Venom!" she answered, nodded and gently flapping her wings.
oooooooooo
"We are honored to welcome you to Olivine City, Johto's main harbor!" a member of the crew exclaimed, motioning for passengers to leave the large ship and reach the main city. "We hope you had a nice journey, and we wish you a pleasant stay in Johto!"
"That's what we hope too!" Brock joked as he and his friends set foot once again on Johto. That place was something of a trip down Memory Lane for him... especially their meeting with Jasmine and their race to the closest island in order to fetch medicine for a sick Ampharos. Even now, the Olivine City Lighthouse stood majestically over the city, dominating it with its height. "It doesn't look like much has changed since last time anyway... So, professor, do you already know where you and Prof. Elm are supposed to meet?"
"Of course, Brock. The appointment is right in front of the harbor, and if I know him as well as I think, he's probably there already!" the Pokemon researcher answered as he led the group of friends towards the exit, among a large crowd of tourists. Tracey seemed to be taking in even the smallest particulars of the new and unusual place surrounding him, and had already made a mental note to sketch the lighthouse as soon as they had some time.
For her part, as much as she tried to hide it behind her aristocratic, haughty mannerisms, Ursula was somewhat overwhelmed by all the novelty in front of her. She had to admit, she hadn't felt that way in Pallet Town, but in a large city like Olivine City, the feeling of being in a new and unknown world hit her full force.
As they made their way through the crowd, the young trainers and Prof. Oak got closer and closer to the exit, reaching it after some trouble and checking that none of them had gotten lost. "Pika, pika!" Pikachu exclaimed, his shrill voice acting as a call for his companions.
"Phew... man, this crowd sure was something!" Ash affirmed as soon as he had checked that everyone was there. "Alright, prof, I think we're all here! Now all we need to do is wait for Prof. Elm to arrive. In fact, I think I can see him already, over there!"
Prof. Oak turned to where Ash was pointing, and smiled when he saw a younger, tall and slim scientist with short light brown hair, wearing a pair of small looking glasses and a white labcoat, coming towards them with an hand raised in greeting. "Professor Oak! You arrived just in time!" Elm exclaimed, recognizing his old teacher and his young companions. "And I'm glad to see Ash and his friends are here... along with a few others! Good to see you, everyone!"
"We're pleased too, professor Elm!" Ash waved back. "Well, we did bring a few friends along! This one is Tracey, the best Pokemon artist I've ever known... and she's Ursula, a Pokemon coordinator from Sinnoh! You already know Pikachu, Misty and Brock, of course!"
"Pikachu!" The yellow Electric-type raised a paw. "Pikachu, pika pi pikachu pika!"
"Hehehee... yeah, I remember you guys very well! And as for you, Ash... I saw you on TV when you won the Sinnoh League! That was really impressive!" Elm answered, shaking hands with Misty and Brock. "As for you... Tracey and Ursula, was it? Welcome to Johto, and I hope you will enjoy your stay!"
"Thank you very much, professor Elm!" Tracey answered. "I have to say, Olivine City is quite impressive! I've never seen a lighthouse like that one anywhere else!"
"Well, that's Olivine City's greatest tourist attraction, in fact!" Elm answered. "And you are... Ursula from Sinnoh, right? Oh, right, I do remember you! I saw you on TV at the Grand Festival!"
On one hand, Ursula's vanity was stroked by the fact that someone remembered her from seeing her on TV; but on the other, she was more than a little annoyed at being reminded of her third defeat against her major rival. "Well, yeah, thanks... but it was nothing out of the ordinary. I can do even better, and I will be the one to win the next Grand Festival! Anyway... honored to meet you, professor Elm." the girl with the spiralling pigtails answered. "We are thankful for having us here today."
"It was a pleasure, Ursula! Although I fear it won't be exactly relaxing." Elm affirmed, as he noticed that Ash had an arm in a sling. "What about you, Ash? What's with that arm of yours?"
The young aspirant Pokemon Master moved his casted arm slightly. "Well... this is from an accident I had while I was in Quest Island. We were trying to stop a group of criminals that were somehow linked to the events you told us about... a friend of mine had it worse, though. She broke both her legs and had to stay in Pallet." he explained.
"Pika pikachu, pika ka pikachu..." Pikachu commented, his cheeks sparking up in his eagerness to pay Team Vicious back for hurting his trainer and his coordinator friend.
"I see... I'm sorry about that." Elm answered, trying to get the whole picture. If what Ash was saying was true, and the enemies he had faced in Quest Island were the same ones that had appeared in Johto, then the situation was worse than expected. "Anyway, I think I should take you to the place I rented for these days. There are a few things I'd like you to take a look at, professor Oak. I'm afraid this is the prelude to a really hard period for all of us."
"Of course. I'll do that as soon as I can." Oak answered, casting a significant and prideful glance at his best pupil. "I know you've done an excellent job, Elm... and I'll be glad to help you make sense of this whole mess."
"Thank you, professor Oak. I'll be glad to work with you and your friends once more!" Elm answered. By now, they had walked out of the Olivine City Harbor, and were passing by the lighthouse and Jasmine's Gym. "Please, follow me, I'll show you the place we'll be staying at for a few days. It's not that much, but it will do at least."
Used as they were to sleep under the stars, Ash and his friends were not about to complain about sleeping under a roof for once. "No worries, professor Elm!" Misty answered, looking around and enjoying the nostalgic feel that town gave her. "In fact, we need to thank you for your offer!"
"Thank you, everyone! I'll talk about what happened in Johto later on. Several things have changed, since the last time you were here!" Elm stated. "And as for you, Tracey and Ursula... you'll get to know this place a little better! I'm sure you will come to like it!"
"We are thankful for that, but I have a question for you..." Ursula answered. When Elm motioned for her to speak, the young girl nodded and went on. "Good. See, I have come here because I had a debt with Ash and his friends, and because I wanted to train in preparation for the next coordinator challenge I will go through. If you could tell me who could give me a few tips about that, I'd be very grateful."
"That can be done." Elm said after a brief silence. "Some Johto Gym Leaders, particularly Falkner and Whitney, will be able to give you a few pointers to improve your technique. So... yeah, I think there will be no problem. I will contact them as soon as I can."
Ursula perked up, and her pretty face lit up with a smile. "Good! Thank you very much, professor Elm! I will make sure to thank you properly and put their tips to good use!"
"Hehehee... and luck starts to be on my side as well!" she said, chuckling to herself. "Enjoy your victory, my dear Dee-Dee, because next time, it will belong to me! I can't wait to meet you again on the field!"
"Good to see you have your priorities straight, Ursula." Misty snarked, seeing the smug glint in the younger girl's eyes.
oooooooooo
A few minutes later, the two scientist had reached their place, leading the young trainers to the rooms they would use for the night, before turning to the matter at hand - the reason why professor Oak had journeyed all the way to Johto.
"Alright, here we are..." Professor Oak said, as soon as his best pupil led him to his temporary lab. It was a rather well-furnished and well-equipped place, inside an apartment. "Tell me, what is it you wanted to show me?"
"Here, professor... I will show you what I discovered, and let you draw your conclusions..." the younger scientist said, picking up some sheets of paper from a desk, upon which a still functioning laptop was laying. He handed them to his teacher, and Oak immediately started reading them, getting visibly worried as he realized that what Elm had told him was by no means an exaggeration: Johto's Legendary Pokemon were showing signs of restlessness - the three Legendary Beasts, Raikou, Entei and Suicune, had been sighted more and more often, though they never remained in one place for long... and Ho-oh, the mysterious phoenix-like Pokemon Ash had seen on his first day of travel, had been sighted near Ecruteak City!
This was worrying indeed. Ho-oh was an extremely powerful Pokemon. Perhaps the strongest Pokemon in Johto together with Lugia. The fact that he seemed to be the most restless of them all surely did not bode well.
"I see... even Morty, the Ecruteak Gym Leader, says he has seen Ho-oh fly circles around Tin Tower." the older researcher stated. "And then there are the reports of that Pokemon researcher, Eusine... the Legendary Beasts have been seen more and more often lately. And in far away places, too... it seems like they are teleporting all over the place!"
"Well, the Legendary Beasts are known to be fast and elusive Pokemon, so I'm not surprised they have managed to put so much distance between their sightings." Elm answered. "Still, the fact remains that they were never seen as often as in recent days. It looks like something is whipping the Legendary Pokemon of Johto into a frenzy, bringing them to do things they would never do under normal conditions. And I have no idea what could be the cause."
"We are here to find that out." Oak answered. "After all, even Legendary Pokemon are part of a clearly-regulated ecosystem, which can't simply go crazy on its own. As soon as we have determined the cause of these dysfunctions, we'll be on our way to a solution to the problem. At least I hope so."
Elm nodded, feeling a little reassured. "That's good news in and of itself, professor Oak." he stated. "Still, I think the best thing to do right now is check where the Legendaries have been sighted, in order to determine if there is a connection between them."
"That sounds like a good idea." Oak answered. "We should also get in contact with this Eusine fellow and try to get more information on the Legendary Beasts. This dilemma we are in should not be underestimated, and we need all the help we can get in order to make heads and tails of it."
"By the way, professor Oak..." Elm went on. "Have you discovered anything about the gems Team Rocket was after in Sevii Islands? One of them is in the Kanto Pokemon League HQ, if I am not mistaken."
"Yes, it's a good thing Ash and his friends managed to get one." Oak answered. "I received some information about the Sapphire, and as it turns out... that gem is somehow connected to Kyogre, one of the Legendary Pokemon of the region of Hoenn... the one representing the ocean, to be more exact. That would explain those tidal waves, and it would also mean that the other two gems, the Ruby and the Emerald, are linked to Groudon and Rayquaza respectively. And then there's that Deoxys Team Vicious captured on Quest Island... yeah, too many legends in a single place for me not to be concerned."
"But the question is, if the Ruby and the Emerald are that powerful... why didn't Team Rocket use them to take control of Groudon and Rayquaza as soon as they were able to?" Elm asked, talking both to himself and to his teacher. "Perhaps the three gems have to be close to each other to function?"
"That could be true..." the older man stated. "As of now, we simply don't have enough information on those strange artifacts to make educated guesses. We need to delve deeper into this matter, if we are to solve it."
Elm nodded, hoping that this problem could be solved before it spiralled out of control.
oooooooooo
Meanwhile, Ash, Pikachu and their friends had decided it would have been a good idea to walk Tracey and Ursula around Olivine City, in order to get them better acquainted with the Johto continent. Both of them seemed very interested in what the place had to offer, though Ursula was doing her best to look aloof.
"Well, there you go, guys. Olivine City, right in front of your eyes! And that, is the Olivine City Gym." Brock explained as he showed them the great building in the innermost part of the city. "Jasmine is the Gym Leader here, and she's specialized in Steel-type Pokemon. Though she has been interested in coordinator competitions too. We did meet her trying to give pointers to Kenny, right after the end of the Sinnoh Grand Festival."
"To Dee-Dee's little boyfriend? Heh, if I had known, I'd have asked her a thing or two myself." Ursula commented with a shrug. "You think we're gonna find her in the Gym, right now?"
Before Ash, Misty or Brock could answer, a well-known female voice answered Ursula's question for them. "Well, there will be no problem about that." the newcomer said. "Just turn around, and you'll see her right in front of your eyes!"
The small team turned in that direction... and just as Ash and his friends had predicted, the young Johto Gym Leader cum coordinator was standing right there, wearing her usual white dress with sandals, her light brown hair tied in a side ponytail. But the real surprise for Ash and his friends was seeing that Jasmine was not alone - aside from a Magnemite floating at her side, there was yet another old acquaintance, one that Ash had not seen in almost four years, but one that he had never forgotten: a young woman about Jasmine's age, wearing a green dress with blue overalls, a pair of boots, and shining blue shoulder-length hair, held by a cute circlet. She looked quite refined, almost aristocratic... and at her side stood a Bellossom, a Pokemon resembling a foot-tall fairy the color of healthy grass, with pink flowers on the sides of her head, and a skirt made of long red petals, which made her look like some sort of miniature Hawaiian dancer. Clearly, that young woman was Erika, Gym Leader of Celadon City and owner of a perfume store, whom Ash had faced in a battle for her Badge. The battle had been interrupted by Team Rocket's inopportune attack, but Erika had given Ash the badge anyway, in order to thank him for saving her Gym, her store and her Gloom from a devastating fire.
"Jasmine! Long time no see!" Misty exclaimed. "And you're Erika! We didn't expect to meet you here, but we're pleased anyway!"
"I could say the same!" Erika said, doing a small curtsey along with her Bellossom. "I followed Ash's progress in all the competitions he took part in, and I must say, I was quite impressed. You've sure come a long way!"
Ash chuckled in embarassment, recalling some rather amateurish mistakes he had made in his Gym match with Erika. "Heheee... yeah, I was a green rookie at the time, and I like to think I'm a wholly different trainer right now!"
"Pikachu, pika pi..." Pikachu greeted the Grass-type Gym Leader.
"We're all pleased to see you again..." Misty began to say, but she was interrupted as Brock dashed in front of Erika and Jasmine... and, after dropping down on one knee in a latin lover pose, he started trying to hit on them!
"And especially me, o fair and graceful ladies!" the dark-skinned young man started, causing Erika and Jasmine to blink in confusion! "How about we take some time for a stroll by the seaside, telling each other about our lives, and..."
ZZZZZZAP!
"Croagunk!" the toad-like Pokemon croaked, popping out of his Pokeball and using his trademark Poison Jab to knock out the casanova wannabe and cause him to drop to the ground in a near faint. Misty and Ursula sighed in annoyance and grabbed Brock by one ear each, dragging him away from the two Gym Leaders!
"Croagunk..." the Poison/Fighting type said, showing the palms of his hands in a gesture of apology.
"Hehehee... we apologize, Brock just can't help it..." Misty giggled nervously, before casting Brock a comically angry stare, and a vein popped up on her forehead! "You must always stand out, huh, Brock? We meet Jasmine and Erika after so much time, and you try to hit on them?"
"Let's make one thing clear, I can't stand skirt chasers!" Ursula commented, combing her hair with her free hand.
"Uuuuugh... is this my fate...?" Brock moaned in pain, before Croagunk returned to his Pokeball by himself. Erika sweatdropped, before Jasmine cleared her voice and spoke in a pacifying tone.
"it's okay, Erika. This is the norm for them." Jasmine calmly stated. "Anyway, guys, I'm pleased to see you again, and joined by some new friends too!"
"By the way, Ash, what about your arm?" Erika stated as she noticed Ash's injured limb. "How did you get hurt? Does this have to do with the reason why you've come here now?"
Tracey cleared his voice. "It's kind of a long story, girls... If you have some time, we can tell you exactly how it went, okay?" he answered.
"That's perfect! Time is just what we have in spades!" Jasmine answered, pointing to her Gym with a nod of her head. "Please, do come, and tell us everything you need to! We have some great news to tell you as well!"
"Of course! That will be great, Jasmine!" Ash answered. "What so you say, Pikachu?"
"Pi - ka -chu!" the electric mouse answered, eager to know what the two Gym Leader had to say...

Author's note: It's good to be back! Sorry, I got hit with a nasty case of writer's block for this story... but now I'm back, and I hope I can keep up better. I will try to get the next chapter up as soon as I can, but I will also try to continue my Super Robot Wars story, and my God of War / Dante's Inferno crosover.
For now, I thank you for your attention, and hope to see you again soon!
