In the bullpen, Erin put away all the documents and files from the case. It was a wrap and a successful one. Erin could not stop herself from identifying with those girls. They could be her, or she could be them in some way. So much pain and disbelief in the world... Erin had been there, in a similar place where Tonya and Ellie had been. And it was a dark place that she didn't want to remember.
She was really proud of how Jay handled it all, in a way she could see Hank on this. When she was behind the mirror of the interrogation room, watching Jay trying to reach that girl, she traveled back to when Hank picked her up and made her his CI and as Hank, back then, Jay was amazing.
Although she could tell he was not very confident in himself after this. When she left him, he looked so tired that she thought maybe she should wait for him, but she took a step back and remembered she knew him well and that he would talk to her when he felt comfortable about it so she left to go home and wait for him to come to her. On his way out she found Hank talking to Sargent Platt. This case had left a mark on everyone apparently.
"Bye you two!" Erin said, preparing to leave the precinct.
"Where's Jay?" Hank asked.
"Still with Ellie," She replied.
"He did good on this!"
Erin nodded. "Maybe you should tell him!"
Hank nodded back, recognizing that he actually should tell him something. "I will!" He assured her.
Jay was alone in the car outside their apartment. He needed to leave all that behind and go upstairs because he needed his girlfriend. He needed her words, her touch, her hug and her smell. He missed her like hell. But first, he needed to leave this behind him. From all the undercover jobs that he had to handle, this one was by far the most difficult to do. These troubled girls really affected him and he was totally out of his element.
Ellie's words couldn't seem to leave him alone. "Sam wanted help too!"
That place was completely messed up. Most of those girls were ruined and would never have a normal and healthy relationship in their lives and he could do nothing about it.
Yes, they managed to close down the house but the damage was done and most of the girls would be in some similar place sooner or later because the system simply didn't work.
But his inner fight now was mostly about what he had to do. He was not ready to face Erin when he still felt disgusted with himself about what he had to do to get Ellie to talk. Those were the hardest words to say in a long time. He felt so conflicted about all this that he was not even sure that he had done the right thing.
Looking at his reflection in the review mirror, he realized he looked beat and exhausted and he could read shame on his face.
"You need to leave this behind man, you have to put yourself together!" He thought to himself while he rubbed his face as he was trying to clean the shame of himself.
Looking at his reflection again he decided to finally come up. She was waiting and he needed her.
When he opened the door, she was on the couch watching TV but she seemed half asleep because she didn't notice him. Just when he lost the boots and dropped the keys on the counter she raises her gaze to face him. "Hey! What took you so long?" Her voice sounded sleepy and dragged.
He smiled shyly. Was he admitting to her where he had been for the past half an hour? Maybe he should, after all, she always had his back and never questioned his behavior the all time.
"I was fighting my demons!" He answered without facing her and headed to the kitchen to pick a beer from the fridge.
"Jay!" She said in a sweet but concerned tone. As he didn't come to her she decided to go to him. She got up from the couch and hugging him from behind as he stood at the kitchen counter. "What demons?"
He just waved his head but kept silent. She picked up his hand and kissed his palm. "What's wrong Jay? Talk to me!"
He finally turned to face her and breathing heavy he finally spoke. "It was one of the hardest cases I have done. Playing there with those girls made me feel disgust for myself and … " She placed her hand on his chest and cut him off. "Jay, you did what you had to do to make them believe that you were someone else, no one doubts you or accused you and trust me when I say that never, never crossed my mind that something could have happened between you and Ellie."
He bowed his head. "I was just frustrated by the fact I had to let her advance on me and by the fact that maybe I got played by her, that was why I needed to clear that up. It was more like an assumption for myself more than a clarification for you all... all this was a bit hard to handle for me, emotionally I mean... I … it was a very uncomfortable role to play but Thank you!" And he kissed her and dove his face into her hair.
She pushed him to face him again. "You did good Jay! You did good by that girl! No demons ok?"
He nodded. "I need a shower!"
She smiled and stepped aside so he could leave the room.
The water managed to clean most of his guilt away. He could still see Ellie's broken gaze when she thought she would have to do some sexual favors to him. And this would stay with him for a while because he was not this guy that bend the law to get where he wants even if that meant he was putting down some bad guy. He didn't like the way that Hank liked to play his job, bending here and picking there. Jay hated to play the game as Hank usually did. But what's done was done and Ellie was safe and he would sleep in his bed tonight with the woman he loved. She stood by him making him love her more and more every day.
When he comes back to the living room she was sleeping all curled up on the couch. He didn't what to wake her up so he tried to lay close to her, in response she rearranged her position to fit there with him.
Hearing and feeling her breathe gave him the peace that he was needing, as always, she was the one that always could calm him down. He finally let himself go and dive in a deep sleep where he ended up dreaming that he and Erin were up state meeting Ellie. She looked good and was healing.
When he woke up in the middle of the night all he could remember was Erin smiling at him as he showed Ellie, with a very excited look, the pictures of the new motorcycle that they had bought.
