Chapter Twelve: The Accident.
Kissing Sanira softly with his hands cupping her face, Robb couldn't help but feel annoyed that he had to leave this early in the morning to go hunting with his father, the King, and the royal court. He would have much rather stayed in bed with Sanira all morning, instead of being dragged out into the cold and forced to spend time with the right royal prick that the King intended to marry to his sister.
"Come on Stark," Theon snapped bumping into Robb deliberately when he walked past him, his face covered in a scowl that seemed to have permanently taken place since Robb had wed. It clearly upset some part of Theon to think that Robb had what he could not, no marriage would be made for Theon by the Starks while he was their ward and there was no sign that his own family thought of him as more than a hostage.
Sanira rested her head against Robb's for a moment before she took a step back and looked over to where Theon was preparing his own horse. She greatly disliked the Greyjoy heir and she wished that she didn't have to run into him most days around Winterfell, she was almost relieved that he would be gone most of the day with the hunting party.
"I will see you later," Robb promised drawing her attention back to him, he offered her a small smile before he turned to walk away to his own horse so that he did not keep everyone waiting. Grey Wind sat at Sanira's feet watching his master prepare to ride out, the cold wind of the morning ruffling his fur as he tilted his head and watched as Robb mounted his horse.
The sight of King Robert being helped onto his horse made her wrinkle her nose, she was almost surprised that the poor horse didn't collapse from the excessive weight that was placed upon his back. It was only when the hunting party started to leave the yard that Sanira made her move, she did hope that they would have some success on the hunt and be back before dark. Walking away from the courtyard, Sanira couldn't help but be grateful that the Queen hadn't summoned her and spoke with her; she was aware of her mother's hopes that Cersei would insist upon her moving to King's Landing.
A place in the Queen's household was a much-desired position, it would have appeased any lady that hoped to bring great honour upon her family and yet Sanira could not imagine anything worse than being trapped in King's Landing. If she had her way, she would remain here at Winterfell for the rest of her life and she might never have to wander further than the Riverlands in her life.
The idea made Sanira's stomach turn and she was sort of glad that she hadn't had a run in with Queen Cersei just yet, it didn't take much to imagine what her cousin thought of her new family. There was no denying that Cersei Lannister thought herself better than all of them here in the North, she looked down upon them and her cold eyes did little to hide the distain that she had for the Northern folks.
Shaking her head to ignore the thoughts that filled her mind, Sanira just wanted nothing more than to not focus on her maternal families wants and demands; they did nothing more than upset her when she thought about them. Grey Wind followed after Sanira as she wandered around Winterfell, she was not needed by Catelyn this morning nor did she feel like returning to her empty chambers.
It was strange and Sanira couldn't help but hope that it would stay that way, she had been disappointed to hear over breakfast that morning that Eddard had agreed to what King Robert had wanted. Sansa had been thrilled not even caring about how upset her mother looked as she talked about her excitement of marrying Prince Joffrey and how one day, she would be Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.
Catelyn hadn't even been able to raise a smile at the announcement and Sanira felt like she was missing something right now; something had happened last night that had worried her good-mother. Walking past the base of the dilapidated tower that was barely ever used, Sanira tried to put her mind at rest when there was a solid thump behind her; she stopped walking confused at the sound before she slowly turned to see what had made it. Sanira froze at the sight of someone laying on the floor, her stomach turning making her wonder just what in the seven hells had happened; her stomach turning as it slowly dawned on her who was laying before her on the ground.
"Bran?" Sanira whispered hurrying over to the young boy, her heart pounded in her chest as she reached him; she dropped to her knees and started to check him over. Attempting not to move Bran in fear of hurting him further, Sanira looked around seeking as she tried to work out how he had gotten there; he had to have fallen from the tower itself.
Looking up at the great height of the tower, Sanira couldn't even begin to imagine how far he had fallen; she knew that Catelyn had spoken to him regularly about his habit for climbing. Her mind raced when she wasn't able to wake Bran, his eyes remained shut and Sanira felt sick since she didn't know how she would deal with this; she looked to Grey Wind and Summer, who had joined them. There was no way that she could leave him alone like this, nor could they wait until someone stumbled across them; it could be too late for Bran by then and they needed the Maester right away.
"We need help," Sanira said to the two pups not wanting to leave Bran alone, she had no idea if they understood her but they dashed off in the direction of the courtyard at her words as she turned her attention to Bran. The two pups bounded towards the courtyard, dodging the people that they passed until they came across Catelyn and Maester Luwin who were discussing the extended stay of the royal court and the affects on the castle.
The two pups quickly grabbed onto Catelyn's skirts and started to tug at them in an attempt to grab her attention. Catelyn stopped and stared down at the pups that yapped at her trying to get her attention and get her to follow them; she frowned before looking to Maester Luwin who shrugged his shoulders.
The pups kept up their actions until Catelyn followed them, they hurried towards the area where they knew that Sanira was trying to rouse Bran and was waiting for them to return with help. Catelyn and Maester Luwin followed after the pups wondering what was going on; they rounded the corner and came to a sudden stop at the sight of Sanira and a fallen Bran on the ground.
"Bran," Catelyn cried hurrying towards her son and good-daughter upon the desperate look from Sanira who was still trying to wake him up so she could find out what had happened. Tears trailed down the brunette's face as her good-mother dropped down to her side, there was no denying that whatever happened to Bran was serious.
It was late at night when the hunting party returned to a quiet Winterfell, their jovially mood seeming to clash with the sullen mood that seemed to greet them upon their return. Robb climbed down from his horse and handed over the reins to the stable boy before he noticed that Sanira was waiting for him at the bottom of the stairs leading into the castle.
It was usually his mother that welcomed them back from such things, however Robb dismissed her absence since she would likely be busying playing hostess for the Queen. Taking a deep breath, Sanira moved down the last of the steps knowing that she had to speak with Eddard before he went inside so that she could tell him what had happened.
Someone had to, Catelyn was in no state of mind to deal with their royal guests and Sanira knew her mind was preoccupied right now with what had happened to Bran. The look on Sanira's face made Robb stop walking and even Eddard seemed to take notice that something had happened while they had been hunting; the solemn look on Sanira's face making him fear the worst.
"What has happened?" Eddard asked, he moved towards his good-daughter who seemed almost at a lost for words as all in attendance turned to focus their attention on her. Sniffling Sanira took a deep breath as she shook her head and looked to Eddard, she wasn't sure how to break the news to him but she doubted that anyone else would be coming to tell him. Catelyn was still upstairs with Maester Luwin and the other Stark children were awaiting news on their brother.
"Bran fell," Sanira revealed so quietly that she wasn't sure for a moment that Lord Eddard had heard her when he hurried past her and up the stairs; she turned to watch him go knowing that it was going to be a long night for them all.
