Surprise at the Party

Klaus sat patiently at the bar, sipping his drink and watching people as they came into the grille. Though Kelly had told him his daughter was going to be there, he had no idea which girl he was supposed to be looking for. Every girl that came in and out looked to be around the same age. Uncharacteristically, he left Kelly alone, though he did compel her to act normally around her daughter and not tell her what was going on. All he wanted was to see her, to meet this girl that he had never known was his child. Turning to order another drink, he was surprised when he heard screaming.

"Ahhh! Happy birthday!" a brunette squealed excitedly, running over and nearly tackling a blonde by the entrance as she came in with a taller man, his hair dark. Realizing the blonde was the birthday girl and therefore his daughter, Klaus wondered about all their names. "You're here!"

"Hi Vicki," the blonde laughed, hugging her back. He figured this girl must be her best friend, or maybe even her younger sister because she looked an awful lot like Kelly.

"Happy birthdaaaaaay!" Vicki grinned again as she pulled away. "You're so old now!"

"Shut up," she laughed back; he saw Vicki look over at the young man now.

"So, Damon, what did you get her?" Vicki asked eagerly as she had been dying to know for days. Klaus thought he must be the boyfriend.

"I was going to give her it later," Damon said.

"EW!" Vicki exclaimed, shoving Damon's shoulder. "Damon, gross, she's my sister." This confirmed what Klaus thought about her being the sister; now he just waited on someone to say her name.

"It's an actual gift," Damon said in offense.

"Ok you two," his daughter laughed, turning her sister and making her walk forward towards the table with the decorations.

Watching her walk over towards the others at the table, he thought that she had a great laugh. She's was beautiful, which he had expected as her mother was very pretty. There were features that she got from him though, namely the wavy blonde hair falling past her shoulders. He thought that she dressed nicely, wearing a simple black dress with short sleeves, black tights, and black ankle boots that had a heel. She hugged two of her friends at the table, two other girls around her age; he caught their names as being Lucy and Kat. There was another guy that hugged her, she greeted him as being Mason. He noticed how his eyes lingered on his daughter and wondered if he had feelings for her.

"Happy birthday Jay," a blonde guy smiled at her, hugging her big now.

"Thanks Matty," she laughed, hugging him back.

"You named our daughter Jay?" Klaus asked Kelly skeptically as she gave him another drink. "That's a letter."

"It's Matt's nickname for her," Kelly rolled her eyes, taking his empty glass. "When he was little he had trouble with her name."

"Which is...?"

"Jade," Kelly answered. "Jade Nicole."

"Nicole?" Klaus raised an eye brow.

"Well, when you compelled me I forgot about what an ass you were," Kelly said simply.

"Mmmm," Klaus nodded, still keeping an eye on his daughter, who's girlfriends were trying to convince her to do shots with them. "She's not a student, is she?" Kelly shook her head.

"She just graduated a few months ago," Kelly replied. "She works at the hospital as a nurse." Klaus nodded, watching her interactions with her friends; she seemed very well liked, which was more than he could say for himself. "She's amazing," Kelly said now, getting his attention. "She's been taking care of Matt and Vicki since I've been...absent." She sighed, looking worried as they both noticed Jade taking shots with her friends. Damon looked worried too. "She's a good girl, all right? Which is why she doesn't need you around."

"I don't think that's up to you," Klaus told her.

"Can I help you with something?" Jade was asking, inviting herself to sit on the bar stool next to Klaus.

The party had thinned out a little, her friends leaving. Her siblings were still there though, as were Mason and Damon, though Damon had excused himself to go to the bathroom. Vicki pointed out the guy at the bar that kept looking at Jade, who drunkenly decided it would be a good idea to talk to him. From the other end of the bar, Kelly shook her head, unable to stop her daughter; Matt had wanted to stop Jade, but Vicki just told him to let her go. What was the harm? If anything, it was going to be kind of funny.

"I'm sorry?" Klaus asked, slightly amused.

"My sister told me you were staring at me," Jade informed him. "I wanna know why."

"You just seemed like you were having fun," Klaus said back.

"I am," Jade grinned, forgetting that she had been annoyed. "Hi mom," she said as Kelly came over. "Have you met my mom?"

"I have," he nodded, smirking at Kelly who fought off an eye roll.

"You know what she makes that's really good?" Jade went on. "Jack and coke." She smiled at her mom. "Can I have one, please?"

"I think you've had enough honey," Kelly smiled nicely at her.

"But it's her birthday," Klaus insisted.

"What he said," Jade nodded at him, then stuck out her lip. "Please mom."

"I haven't seen that face since you were seven," Kelly handed her a glass of water. "Drink this first, then we'll talk."

"Boo," Jade protested as her mother went to take care of someone else, Klaus now sliding his untouched drink over to her; she raised an eye brow at him.

"I won't tell if you won't," Klaus told her with a smile.

"Nice," Jade laughed, sipping the drink. "Thanks."

"It's your birthday," Klaus said. "You can drink if you want to."

"God, could you tell my mother that?" Jade complained, taking a drink; she stopped, thinking about it. "And my boyfriend." She rolled her eyes. "He's all, don't drink too much, you know what happens. Like I have a problem or something." She thought about it. "I think I do."

"I'm sure you don't," Klaus assured her.

"I'm talking with a stranger about how I might have a drinking problem after accepting his drink," Jade said sarcastically, though she couldn't help but giggle; that made him laugh a little. "God, I'm just so..." She struggled for the word, making a big hand motion as she went.

"So what?" Klaus asked curiously.

"Screwed up," Jade admitted.

"I highly doubt that," Klaus promised, thinking his daughter was pretty perfect. But, then again, maybe you just thought that as a father.

"Thanks bar stranger," Jade commented. "But, I am." She pointed at Kelly. "Mommy issues, daddy issues..." She took another drink. "Step daddy issues."

"You have a step father?" Klaus asked curiously, wondering what other man was in taking care of his daughter.

"Ah, used to," Jade rolled her eyes.

"Did he pass away?"

"I wish," Jade commented, tossing back the rest of his drink before lowering her voice into a poor excuse for a whisper. "Kelly will tell you she kicked him out, but he definitely just bailed, not that he was useful anyway." Klaus had the sudden urge to track down this step father, maybe that was his own fatherly instincts.

"And, your own father?" Klaus asked now.

"I waited my entire life to meet this guy," Jade rolled her eyes. "And I always thought, ya know, my mom's a pain in the ass, my step dad is a dick...maybe my real dad isn't that bad. Maybe he didn't even know about me! You know?" He nodded, and that was true, he hadn't known about her. "But, then this mysterious uncle of mine shows up and is like your dad is a bad person, so watch out. And I'm thinking..." She stopped, shaking her head and rubbing her forehead now. "God, I'm sorry. You don't care about any of this."

"I do," he promised.

"Well, that's nice of you to pretend," she laughed. "I'm Jade." He wasn't sure that he wanted to tell her his real name if she had already met Elijah; he already gave her a warning against him and she might be afraid. If she met Elijah, that also meant that she knew about vampires.

"Matt," he said back.

"No way, that's my baby brother's name!" Jade exclaimed, then thought about it. "And my step dad, but we'll just stick with it being my brother's name."

"All right," Klaus said, unable to help but smile when she smiled. Jade tilted her head back to look at who was behind her when she felt someone's hands on her shoulders.

"Damon," Jade grinned happily, looking back at Klaus. "Have you met Damon?" She tilted her head back against Damon's chest, looking up at him. "His name's Matt too, like Matty, but not."

"Hey," Damon greeted him politely, shaking his hand once. "I'm sorry," he laughed.

"She's fine," Klaus promised. "She's very sweet."

"Yeah, I'm adorable," Jade looked back up at Damon again.

"That you are," Damon promised, kissing her forehead. "And just a little tipsy." He couldn't help but worry about her when she drank. She had been trying to stop and it always got out of hand once she started.

"I'm fine," Jade assured him, hopping off her bar stool and kissing his cheek. "You worry too much." She grinned. "I'm gonna go bug Vicki, bye Matt."

"Bye," Klaus laughed, watching her bounce off to find her sister, both girls saying something loudly about how they should dance. They both ran over to a clear space, twisting and tossing their hair wildly all over the place, looking like they were having fun. Their younger brother was with Mason, looking a little worried but he wasn't going to stop them; Mason thought everything was fine.

"She's right you know," Klaus commented to Damon as Kelly brought him another water. "You worry too much."

"Maybe," Damon agreed.

"You're very lucky though," Klaus added now. "I hope you take care of her." Damon looked confused.

"God, not you too," Damon complained, nodding over at Mason. "I've already got one guy trying to go after her."

"I promise it's not that," Klaus said, getting up from the bar and not noticing the other couple coming into the grille now.

"Ahh, Stefan and Elena are here!" Jade said excitedly, hugging Stefan first.

"Someone is having a good birthday," Stefan laughed, letting her go. Klaus was shocked to see him there, Stefan Salvatore, his best friend from the 1920s. And with him was his girlfriend, but there was no way there was another doppelganger. Was there?

"Better go save my brother from hurricane Jade," Damon joked, taking the water now, then noticing Klaus's expression. Knowing Stefan was a vampire, that obviously made Damon one too; his daughter's boyfriend was a vampire and his brother was with the new doppelganger. "You...ok?" Damon asked curiously.

"Fine," Klaus nodded, taking his keys and putting them in his pocket. "Guess I better not drive tonight though," he was saying, walking away now, though he continued to listen. Jade continued to dance with Vicki, looking like she was having fun for the first time in a long time. Stefan though held a serious face as he took his brother off to the side.

"We need to talk," Stefan was saying to him.

"Now?" Damon half complained.

"I went by the tomb to see Katherine," Stefan explained and Klaus was surprised to hear that Katherine was alive, realizing she must have faked her own death back in the 1800s. Since Katherine had shown up at the Salvatore house a few days ago while Jenna was having her barbecue, Bonnie had shown up to help so they could get Katherine into the old tomb under the burned down church, trapping her there.

"She told me more about Jade's dad," Stefan continued, seemingly more worried than Damon that this guy might show up.

"Is it bad?" Damon asked and Stefan gave him an obvious look. "Then, don't tell me tonight." Klaus gave up on listening, leaving the bar now. After all, he knew this part of the story as he had no good intentions in mind once he found out that there was another doppelganger.

"Damon," Stefan said seriously.

"No," Damon shook his head. "Look, it's her birthday and she's having fun. I'm not ruining tonight for her." He smirked. "She might not even remember the conversation anyway," he joked.

"Yeah, you should probably just kick her when she's down tomorrow with a massive hangover," Stefan said sarcastically and Damon rolled his eyes.

"No good way to do this," Damon sighed. "Why do we even believe what Katherine says anyway?"

"Because she's been running from him," Stefan explained. "Jade's not the only one we have to worry about, it's Elena too. That's why she came back here-"

"Why Elena?" Damon cut him off and Stefan sighed, nodding for him to follow him outside. "What's going on?"

"You remember the other night when we were talking with Mason?" Stefan asked curiously.

A couple nights after Jade had returned home, the three of them had been talking about what they had heard over the years about Klaus. Mason had explained what the werewolves knew about him, that he was the only original that was also a werewolf, that his witch mother had put a curse on him to keep him from being able to manifest as a werewolf. In order to break the curse, he needed three things; a vampire, a werewolf, and a doppelganger.

"The curse," Damon nodded, then groaned when he realized. "Elena's the doppelganger."

"I guess Katherine turned herself before he could use her to break the curse," Stefan went on. "That's why she's running and that's why she came here."

"To hand Elena over so she can stop living on the run," Damon finished for him and Stefan nodded. "And I guess Jade was just an added bonus."

"Guess so," Stefan agreed.

"Those other vampires that took Jade and Katherine are the only ones that know, right?" Damon said hopefully and Stefan shrugged.

"What if the other vampires told people, or someone else figured out who Jade is?" Stefan offered. "There's no way to know if he knows."

"Well, we can't just sit and panic over something we can't control," Damon reasoned, both of them turning when they heard the door opening behind them. Vicki lead the way out, followed by Mason who was carrying Jade and then Matt and Elena.

"Someone's getting dizzy sleepy drunk," Mason explained, having scooped Jade up when she looked like she was about to fall over.

"I got her," Damon said, Mason passing Jade to him now.

"Everything ok?" Vicki asked.

"Nothing we have to worry about right now," Damon said, though he wasn't sure who he was trying to reassure. "Let's just get the birthday girl home."

Damon wondered all night on what to tell Jade, or really how to break the news to her. They had all heard stories about Klaus, the most feared out of all the originals; he'd earned that title well. Never did they think though they'd be caught up in the middle of one of his schemes. It wasn't enough that he was Jade's long last dad and an alleged sociopath, but he was going to come to town the second he found out about Elena just so he could kill her. Caught in the middle were any vampires or werewolves that they knew that could get dragged into this ritual too.

Damon managed to fall asleep eventually, though he woke up the next morning when he heard Jade throwing up down the hall in the bathroom. When he went to check on her, she was leaning against the counter holding her head in her hands, having just brushed her teeth but feeling like she was going to throw up again.

"Ugh, I hate myself," Jade said, running her hands through her hair before searching the medicine cabinet for ibuprofen. Damon leaned against the counter while she searched.

"At least yesterday was fun," Damon reaffirmed. "Right?" She nodded.

"At least I think so," Jade grumbled sarcastically, making him smile a little. "I hardly remember."

"All signs of a good birthday," Damon assured her, not wanting her to feel bad about drinking, even though everyone had worried about her.

"You don't think that guy at the bar did something to that drink, do you?" Jade asked skeptically. Her memories from the night before came in foggy bits and pieces and she hadn't been this hung over in a long time.

"No," Damon shook his head. "I think it's just because his drink was your fifth one in a short time." He nodded at her. "And, you're such a tiny thing..." Jade sighed.

"I'm sorry I was so crazy," Jade apologized.

"You're fine," Damon promised, kissing her head.

"God, then can you stop shouting at me at least?" Jade half laughed and he smiled, kissing her once. "Ugh, and I have to go into work..."

"Call off," Damon shrugged.

"My boss was at the grille," Jade shook her head, popping the headache medicine. "They'll know I'm hung over." She went to leave so she could change, but then she stopped. "Did I hear Stefan saying something in the car about my dad?"

"I don't think we need to worry about it," Damon said again. "No one else knows about you besides your dead uncle and the two geniuses that kidnapped you."

"But?" Jade insisted, knowing there was something else.

"We'll talk about it when you get home," Damon assured her.

"My head already hurts enough as it is," Jade agreed, walking back to her bedroom so she could change into her scrubs. When she got there, she noticed the little black box with the bow on it sitting on her bedside table. "What's this?" she asked Damon, not seeing it before.

"That's the birthday present I never got to give you," Damon smiled at her.

"Can I open it?" she asked.

"It's yours," he laughed and she playfully made a face as she opened the small box. Inside was a silver bracelet with green stones set the whole way around it.

"Damon...thank you," Jade said appreciatively. "It's really pretty."

"I was going through some of my family's stuff," Damon explained, helping her put it on. "It was my mom's. And, when I found out that the stones are called jade, I figured it was perfect," he smiled at her. "Do you like it?"

"I love it," Jade said, kissing him once. "Thank you."

Jade went into work that morning, head still throbbing but at least her nausea had gone away. Thankfully, there were only a few patients on her floor and, recognizing she wasn't well, one of her friends offered to do the rounds while she did any charting or admissions that came along. Alone at the desk, she looked up when she noticed someone leaning against the counter.

"Jade?"

"You're the bar stranger," Jade half laughed, wondering what he was doing there. "Or..." She thought about it. "Matt, right?"

"Right," Klaus nodded with a smile. "About that actually-"

"Not to be rude," Jade cut him off. "But, why are you at my work?" She paused. "And how do you know where I work?"

"Your mother told me," Klaus said simply and she raised an eye brow.

"My mother?" Jade asked in confusion.

"I used to...see her," Klaus decided on the term. "Socially."

"Oh," Jade made a face. "Well, you're certainly not the first younger guy. At least you're over eighteen," she grumbled under her breath, recalling the Tyler incident. She stopped, shaking her head. "I'm sorry, but what are you doing here?"

"There's something that I wanted to tell you," Klaus explained. "I know this isn't the best place, but if we were at your home you might slam-"

"Tell me what?" Jade cut him off impatiently and he picked up that she had a temper, from him he was sure.

"That my name's not Matt," he started off and she rolled her eyes.

"Well, you're not the first man to ever lie to me," she commented sarcastically, not getting what this was about.

"Your step father you talked so fondly about last night?" Klaus asked and she just didn't answer, not seeing the point in this, though she was embarrassed she had talked about her step dad to a complete stranger. "Did he ever hurt you?"

"Why did you care about my step dad so much?" Jade snapped at him.

"Because of who I am to you," Klaus tried not to snap back but couldn't help but to snap a little; Jade just crossed her arms over herself. "My name is Klaus," he told her now and she looked completely shocked by that revelation, her mouth nearly dropping open. "Do you know who I am?" She nodded silently.

"Jade?" Mason asked, coming over and setting a brown bag on the counter. "Everything ok?" She nodded quickly, but really it felt like her head was spinning.

"What...what are you doing?" Jade asked.

"I brought breakfast," Mason nodded at the bag. "Figured it would help with the hangover." He looked over at Klaus now, concerned for Jade. "Weren't you at the bar last night?"

"Mason," Jade stopped him, standing up now. "This, um...this is...ah..." Before she could get the words out, she found herself finding the nearest trashcan so she could throw up.
