Cursed

"Jade," Damon said quickly, rushing over to where she was sitting. She wasn't alone, she was with Kelly who was sitting on the floor next to her, hugging her. He had gotten the frantic call from Kelly about fifteen minutes before and he knew that Jade going over to her apartment alone was a mistake. "Jade, hey," he said gently, kneeling next to her.

"It's ok baby," Kelly was promising, kissing Jade's head while she held her, though Jade kept her own arms wrapped around her knees she had pulled to her chest. "You were right," she assured her, running a hand over her hair. Jade shrugged away from her mom, accepting Damon's hand to help her up.

"I have to..." She was just nodding over to the side at the bathroom.

"Yeah, yeah, go clean up," Damon said gently, kissing her forehead before letting her go. She slipped into the bathroom, closing the door gently behind her. Kelly got up to go over to Damon and he looked at her carefully; her messed up hair, her blackened eye, her busted lip.

"You need to make her forget Damon," Kelly said, lowering her voice. "Make her forget, like Nik made me forget about him."

"It won't matter," Damon said, discouragement in his voice. "Not with what she is."

Yesterday

"Hey, Roberta," Jade stopped the grille's manager as she was walking by. "Have you seen my mom?"

"Ah, I think she went out back for a smoke break," Roberta told her, turning to go again but she stopped. "You know what, I've been meaning to tell you honey, you're mom has really proved me wrong. She's been doing so well here, we're really lucky to have her back."

"Mmm," Jade nodded with little enthusiasm, getting up from her seat to go out back to find her mom.

"After you," Klaus nodded at Damon, who was already leaving to go follow his girlfriend, feeling weird that it was her dad not far behind him. What took his attention away from that though was that Jade was currently on a war path, heading right out to the back alley to rip her mom a new one.

"Jade," Damon tried to stop her, maybe calm her before she tore into her mom, but she pulled away from him as she pushed the door open.

"Hi sweetie," Kelly smiled at her when she came outside. "Damon." Then, she was confused. "Nik?"

"Father daughter bonding," Jade brushed it off before moving into her next point.

"Ok, honey," Kelly said gently. "I know you've always wanted to know your dad but..." She lowered her voice, not like it mattered. "I don't think this is the best way, with him showing up out of no where."

"Funny you mention absentee dads just showing up out of no where," Jade said with a fake smile and Kelly realized who she saw.

"You saw your dad," Kelly affirmed. "He was coming by for the apartment key."

"Vicki and Matty's dad," Jade said, having to go back to referring to her brother as Matty full time to avoid confusion. "And yes, to get the key."

"Jade-"

"God," Jade pushed her mom's hand away from her. "Just when I thought you were getting it together, I..." She shook her head as she trailed off. "It's the same shit, different day." She turned to leave now, with Kelly knowing not to go after her. As Jade opened the door to go back into the grille, she almost took out her brother as she walked back inside.

"Jay?" Matty asked in confusion; he had just come in for his shift and was taking out the garbage. "Ah..." He was even more confused by who was with her. "Seriously?"

"Come here," Jade rolled her eyes, grabbing his hand and pulling him into the kitchen. She told Damon and Klaus to give her a minute, that she would just have to talk to them later; she was surprised they both left so easily. Alone with her brother now, she explained everything to him, how she was trying to get to know her dad when his dad showed up, how Kelly must have contacted him to come back for some reason.

"You're kidding me," Matt accused her and Jade shrugged.

"He came by here looking for a key," Jade reiterated. "Like he's staying with her or something, I don't know."

"What are we gonna do about Vic?" Matt asked her. "She's going to lose it when she finds out dad is back."

"No offense Matty," Jade stopped him. "But we're not handling it all that great either."

"Yeah, but her emotions are all out of whack now," Matt reminded her. "You said it yourself when mom came back, and that was just a normal Kelly dropping back in on us thing. But this is dad. You know, the guy who we saw for the last time driving by school when he was supposed to be picking us up?"

"I remember him," Jade rolled her eyes. "Ok? But right now we just have to find a way to get him to leave."

"Well, you said Damon compelled him out of here," Matt shrugged. "Just get him to compel him out of town."

"So that mom leaves with him?" Jade asked skeptically. "Me and her aren't exactly getting along, but I wouldn't wish that on her." Her step dad was a lot of things. He was useless around the house. He was horrible with the kids. He spent more time at the bar than he did at work. And Jade hoped that Matt was too young to remember, but there was more than one occasion where Jade and Vicki caught Matt senior knocking Kelly around the house, leaving her black and blue.

"Then what do we do?" Matt asked curiously. Jade sighed, having no idea what to do.

"We'll figure it out," Jade promised. "All right?" She ran her hands through her hair. "I'm gonna go home and try to break it to Vic, all right?" Matt nodded as she turned to go.

"And, Jay?" Matt stopped her and she turned around. "In case you go looking for it, I got rid of that vodka you tried to hide behind the fabric softener in the laundry room."

"And I figured no one ever touched the fabric softener," Jade said since she didn't know what else to say at this point. Matt gave her a serious look to which she just shrugged. "I won't get another one," she assured him. "Promise."

And she meant it.

"Wait, dad showed up?" Vicki asked. She and Jade were home alone that evening, though Jade was preparing to go over to Damon's that night, which she was packing an over night bag for now. Vicki was sitting on her bed while Jade was packing, pacing her room.

"Yep," Jade said, shoving her work clothes for the next day into the bag.

"Dad dad?" Vicki confirmed and Jade stopped, looking at her in confusion.

"No, the other dad?" Jade asked back sarcastically and Vicki rolled her eyes.

"How were things with your dad?" Vicki changed the subject and Jade shook her head.

"Fine, weird," Jade brushed it off. "I don't know." As she was saying this, her phone started to buzz with a phone call on her bed.

"Speaking of," Vicki picked up Jade's phone, waving it to show who it was; she was surprised though to see that it was Mason. "Oh, I thought it would be him," she shrugged, tossing the phone to Jade.

"Hello?" Jade answered, dropping onto her bed to sit with her sister.

"Hey, Jade," Mason replied back. "Is...everything ok?"

"Ah," Jade hesitated, looking at Vicki who shrugged. "What have you heard?"

"Well, your dad called me," Mason explained. "He told me something about your step-dad showing up, but he doesn't want to smother you..."

"Are you two phone call buddies or something?" Jade teased, knowing Mason had told Klaus she was nervous about meeting up with him and told him about the lunch date and zoo.

"He's just worried and doesn't want to push," Mason said, rolling his eyes at her comment though he did smile.

"Well, when you two chat again you can tell him I'm fine," Jade said, getting up and grabbing her bag. "And I'm sorry I ran out on our lunch date."

"Maybe you should tell him that," Mason said.

"I'm on my way to Damon's and he's a little anti-Nik still I think," Jade rolled her eyes. "Besides, I'd like to spend a night away from all the dad drama."

"Fair enough," Mason agreed. "I'll talk to you tomorrow, ok?"

"K," Jade said, hanging up the phone and heading downstairs.

"You know Damon's just worried about you," Vicki said of Jade's comment about how Damon hated her dad, following her down the stairs. "No one knows anything about this guy, or really anything good, and he just shows up out of no where-"

"Sound like anybody else we know?" Jade offered and Vicki shook her head.

"You threw mom out," Vicki said. "And if I didn't know any better, I think you'd probably-" She was interrupted by a knock at the door. Both she and Jade went over to see who it was, though Jade held the door close to being shut when she saw who was out there.

"Go away," Jade immediately told her step-dad.

"We've got a lot to talk about Jade," he informed her. "Starting with who owns this place."

"Kelly signed it to me," Jade argued with him.

"Her name wasn't the only one on the deed," Matt senior told her back.

"Well, then I guess you owe me a couple of mortgage payments," Jade said sarcastically. "And child support." She went to shut the door but he pushed it open.

"You can't keep me away forever Jade," he told her now. "Sooner or later, you're going to have to talk to me. And sooner or later, I'm going to take back what's mine." And, with that, Vicki came over and used all her strength to slam the door shut.

That night at the Salvatore house, Jade didn't tell him about the encounter with her step-dad on the porch of her house. If she did, she knew that one of a few things might happen: Damon might kill him, which she didn't want; he would make her call the police, which she didn't want either. All she wanted was to go over to her mom's apartment the following day after her shift and deal with this on her own. If Damon knew what happened, that her step-dad had confronted her at the house about making her move out, he never would have let her go. He was already hesitant on letting her go alone, but she said that she wanted to handle her parents herself, that she didn't want anyone else involved, especially her siblings.

When Jade got there though, she knew that she shouldn't have come alone. For once, her mother was on her side, stating that she and Matt wouldn't move back into the house and that their kids should get to stay there. She wanted them to live as normally as possible before slowly making their way back in to being a family. After all, that's all she was trying to do after she came back to Mystic Falls to live on her own. The only reason she called her ex was because she wanted the family to be whole again.

Jade's step-dad didn't see it that way though. He was like he had always been, looking for Kelly to take care of him and free load off of her until he was bored and could leave again; and, this time around, he wanted to take the house back from the kids too. When Kelly told him no, that was the first swing he took at her. Jade felt something build up in her, this infamous temper that she knew she always had, the one she knew she got from her werewolf father.

She first picked up a nearby glass, throwing it at her step-father's back. It didn't break until it hit the ground, but it was enough to get him to come after her next. Jade fought and swung back, her mother coming to her aid and trying to pry him off of her. That only made him more mad and he turned to hit her mom again, this time splitting her lip open. Jade grabbed the next closest thing to her, a lamp off the end table, and swung that at him with the heavy base hitting his head.

Jade couldn't say anything as she dropped the lamp, sinking down onto the floor, the carpet now stained with her step-father's blood. Kelly was scrambling over to her now, checking her over to see if she was ok but Jade couldn't think of anything else. She had just killed somebody. She could hear her mom calling Damon desperately, crying and asking him to come over before coming over to sit with Jade on the ground, holding her tight as her daughter didn't seem to want to move.

"It's ok baby," Kelly promised her daughter, kissing her head. "You protected me sweetie, it's ok."

"Jade," Damon said as he rushed into the apartment. He helped her and Kelly to their feet, with Jade going off to the bathroom to clean herself up, Kelly staying to talk to Damon.

"You have to make her forget," Kelly continued to plead, though Damon told her it wouldn't work.

"I can't compel her Kelly," Damon tried to explain.

"I know she's your girlfriend and you love her," Kelly reasoned. "But she can't handle something like this." She motioned at the bathroom door. "She's so shaken and broken. And if she starts drinking again-"

"That's the least of our worries," Damon cut her off and Kelly looked at him in confusion. "Kelly, Jade's dad isn't just a vampire. He's a werewolf too, and that got passed on to her."

"What does that mean?" Kelly asked in confusion.

"It means in order to trigger the curse, she has to kill somebody," Damon said gently. "She'll be turning on full moons now, and I can't make her forget anything." He was just as upset as Kelly, he wanted so badly to take away Jade's pain over this, but there was nothing he could do. There was no way to stop it. He could hear her crying in the bathroom and wanted to comfort her, but left her alone when he realized she was on the phone with someone.

"Jade?" he answered in confusion. "Sweetheart, what's wrong?"

"Dad?" Jade said, though this was the first time she addressed him this way. "Nik...whoever...I just..."

"Are you all right?" he asked worriedly.

"I..." Jade said, more tears coming and making her breath catch. "I killed my step-dad." She was sobbing now; she wanted her dad right now. "I killed someone, I triggered it, I-"

"Shhh," Klaus tried to soothe her. "Don't cry. Are you at your mother's?"

"Uh huh," Jade sniffed.

"I'll be there soon," he promised, though the moment he hung up he immediately dialed someone else. "Hello, Damon?"

"How did you get this?" Damon asked in confusion.

"I think there are more pressing matters," Klaus said, grabbing his jacket so he could leave. "Maybe why Jade's calling me in tears in the middle of the night."

"I don't think this is the time to start acting like a dad," Damon said. "Not when she needs people who have actually been there for her the entire time."

"What if I told you I had a way to keep her from turning?" Klaus offered and Damon was stunned.

"...what?"
