Help From my Friends

"Jade?" Damon asked, knocking on her door gently.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much they could do to cover up what had happened. Kelly's neighbors had heard the fighting and called the police, who showed up around the same time Klaus did. Because the police were there and they were all on vervain, they had to tell the truth; Jade killed her step-father to protect her mother. Once the truth was told, there wasn't much investigation. After all, most people around town knew what Matt senior was like before he bailed on his family.

Today was his funeral, which Matt and Vicki already left to meet their mom for. Vicki had left Damon into the house, saying that Jade hadn't left her bedroom all morning. Jade had been debating with herself for hours, not that anyone expected her to go. Matt and Vicki were going because they felt like they had to, even if their dad was always horrible to them.

Jade also couldn't help but notice what date her step-dad's funeral fell on; it was the full moon, her first since she triggered the curse. Hearing Damon knocking on her door, she went to open it for him, seeing him dressed for her step-dad's funeral in case she decided to go. It was clear what her final decision was as she was still in her pajamas.

"Hi," Jade said absently, leaving the door open and walking over towards her bed, where Damon followed her to lay with her, pulling her close to lay against his chest; they were quiet for awhile.

"No one expects you to go," he told her gently.

"Good," she muttered. "It's pretty sadistic for the murderer to go to the funeral anyway," Jade grumbled.

"You're not a murderer," Damon stopped her, pulling away and she sat up to look at him.

"Then what would you call it?" Jade demanded.

"You protected your mom," Damon reminded her. "You defended yourself." He motioned at the door. "He was going to come back and ruin things for your brother and sister, you were protecting them too."

"Tell that big gray area to my werewolf gene," Jade told him.

"Jade," Damon said seriously and she groaned, her head falling against his shoulder.

"I'm sorry," Jade murmured. "It's not your fault, I shouldn't be getting mad at you."

"It's ok," Damon promised, kissing her forehead. "We'll figure this all out, all right?"

"What's to figure out?" Jade asked. "I'm turning tonight Damon."

"And Mason's going to be there to help," Damon assured her, though there was a part of him that wasn't too thrilled it was Mason; at least she didn't have to go through it alone. "I could be there if you wanted me too."

"Werewolf bites kill vampires," Jade protested. "No way." She shook her head as she got up from the bed. "I'll deal with it by myself."

"We've still got a few hours," Damon assured her. "So, you don't have to do anything by yourself yet."

"No," Jade shook her head. "I do. This...is who I am now, and I have to learn to deal with it."

"Ok," Damon agreed, though he hesitated which Jade caught.

"What?" Jade asked in confusion.

"I'm just worried about how you deal with things," Damon admitted. It wasn't a secret to anyone, it was obvious they were all afraid of Jade going over the edge and starting to drink again.

"Matty knows my one hiding spot in the laundry room," Jade tried to say lightly but there was still tension in the room. "He got rid of it, that's all I had hidden, I swear."

"Ok," Damon nodded, believing her as he got up and walked over to her. "You know you can talk to me, right?"

"Yeah," Jade nodded quickly, kissing him once. "Yeah, I know." She awkwardly adjusted his tie. "You, um, better get going if you're going to make it in time."

"I don't have to go," Damon half protested and she shook her head.

"One of us should be there," Jade reasoned. "For my mom, Matty, and Vic. Ya know?" She shrugged. "Love him or hate him, he was still their family."

"All right," Damon gave in hesitantly, though he did want to go for one reason: he hadn't heard from Klaus since Matt senior had died and he apparently knew some way to keep Jade from turning. "Just, um..." He wasn't sure what to say.

"I don't think I could possibly get myself into anymore trouble than I'm already in," Jade teased and he smiled at her.

"I love you," Damon told her, kissing her now.

"I love you too," Jade said before watching him walk away.

"How is she?" Vicki asked under her breath during the funeral.

There weren't many people there. Kelly was there, though the only reason she went was because Matt and Vicki were going; they just went because they felt like they had too. There were a few random people from town and outside town that Matt senior had known, no one really close though. It was a sad turn out, which was a reflection of the kind of person he was. Matt and Vicki's friends had wanted to come as support, but the Donovan siblings practically begged them not to as they didn't want to make an even bigger deal out of this.

"Sober, if that's what you're asking," Damon informed her and she rolled her eyes. "Just...pay attention, ok?"

"Oh yeah right," Vicki said sarcastically. "I'm a vampire sitting in a church at the funeral of my dad killed by my werewolf sister next to her vampire boyfriend while her original father creeps around in the background."

"What?" Damon snapped, turning to look over his shoulder and sure enough there was Klaus who nodded at him to follow. "Wait here."

"Are you serious?" Vicki asked and Matt nudged her to be quiet. Damon got out of his seat and followed Klaus outside the church and around the side to the alley it shared with the soup kitchen next door.

"So," Damon said, as they stopped walking and Klaus turned to him. "You tell me you have a way to keep Jade from turning, then you disappear for three days? You're really shooting for father of the year, aren't you?"

"Not like there's much competition around here," Klaus reminded him, looking back at the church and Damon rolled his eyes.

"Do you have a way to help her or is this just some way for you to get her on your side by giving her false hope?" Damon asked. "Because I didn't tell her what you told me, I won't get her hopes up like that."

"Good," Klaus nodded. "I was hoping you wouldn't." Damon looked at him in confusion. "Jade isn't going to like what we have to do to keep her from turning." He motioned to him. "You might not like it either, but I take you for the do whatever you have to for the people you love type. Am I right?"

"What's this plan?" Damon asked him impatiently.

"Since Elijah's been here and has met Jade I'll assume you all know about the curse on me and how I've been waiting to break it," Klaus said and Damon nodded.

"Right, the thing where you have to kill Elena," Damon reminded him. "My brother's girlfriend and the girl Jade's babysat since she was a kid."

"Once I break the curse, I'll be a hybrid," Klaus continued to explain. "Werewolf and vampire. I'll be able to walk in the sun without a daylight ring-"

"How nice for you," Damon cut him off, not getting what this had to do with Jade.

"And I'll be able to control when I turn," Klaus finished. "Not only that, but I'll also be able to sire other hybrids. Turning other werewolves so they can control when they turn. They wouldn't have to turn at all if they didn't want to." He studied Damon's surprised expression. "Do you see what I'm saying here?"

"You'll turn Jade into a hybrid once your curse is broken," Damon reiterated. "She'll never have to turn on a full moon."

"You're quick," Klaus commented sarcastically and Damon gave him a look. "I like you for her, very smart."

"You're conveniently forgetting the fact where you have to kill Elena," Damon reminded him.

"And another vampire and werewolf," Klaus reminded him. "Two strangers, I promise, no one you all know."

"Except for Elena," Damon repeated.

"Elena doesn't have to die," Klaus replied simply. "If she were to have vampire blood in her system, then she would come back." Damon didn't even know what to say to that. "Think about it Damon," he continued. "The curse is broken, Elena's still alive, and more importantly Jade is happy because she never has to turn again." He smiled at him. "Not only that, but then she'll be a vampire too. Immortal. As in, you'll never have to worry about her growing old and leaving you behind."

"I get it," Damon snapped. He didn't know what to do with this information now that he had it.

"You can think about it," Klaus shrugged. "Think all you want, but by the next full moon I will have my witch here," he promised. "I will have found another werewolf and vampire, and I will break that curse. Whether or not Elena has vampire blood to bring her back will be up to you." Klaus left him in the alley, turning back to go around the church where the service was letting out.

"Kelly," Klaus said when they crossed paths. "Vicki, Matt. I'm sorry for-"

"Stop," Kelly cut him off, before looking to her children. "Go wait in the car." Matt took Vicki with him, taking off in his truck to meet their mom at the cemetery where the service would officially end.

"What's that look for?" Klaus asked her curiously.

"You're up to something," Kelly observed, crossing her arms and Klaus looked at her in amusement.

"And how could you tell that about me?" Klaus smirked at her. "You knew me for a week at the most."

"That's the same look Jade gets in her eyes when she's trying to get away with something," Kelly pointed out to him and he smiled. "If you're going to do anything that hurts my daughter-"

"Our daughter," Klaus cut her off.

"You haven't exactly been around for her," Kelly reminded him.

"I never had the chance to," Klaus fired back. "Unlike some people." Kelly didn't say anything back. "I'm not going to do anything that's going to hurt her Kelly.I swear to her, on her, that-"

"Shouldn't you be swearing on your own life?" Kelly cut him off now.

"Hers means more to me," Klaus explained.

"Hey Jade!" Mason called, letting himself into the house. The rest of the family was still at the funeral, though Damon had gone who knew where to think things over after talking with Klaus. Mason decided that it would be a good idea to get Jade out of the house, to give them a chance to talk before things started happening tonight.

"You home?!" Mason shouted, heading upstairs. He heard someone fumbling with a door knob before Jade came stumbling out of her bedroom, holding onto the door frame for balance.

"Yes?" Jade asked, trying to play it cool like she wasn't hammered.

"Jade," Mason sighed.

"So, I have more than one stash," Jade slurred. "Ok? The laundry room isn't the only hiding place."

"Uh huh," Mason nodded, not amused. "Where else?"

"Mmm," Jade groaned. "My closet, in an old shoe box."

"Anywhere else?" Mason asked impatiently, going to grab the bottle. "For real this time?"

"Nooo," Jade complained, falling over on her bed. She could hear him cross the hall to the bathroom to dump out the rest of the liquor. "That's it! I swear." She sat up quickly when he came back in the room. "Don't tell Matty or Vicki."

"I won't," Mason promised, offering a hand to help her up.

"You're a good friend," Jade told him, patting his arm.

"Yeah," Mason nodded with a smile, though he wasn't overly amused that she was drinking again. "Look, um, let's just get you out of here ok? We can talk about tonight and get you sobered up beforehand." He grabbed her over night bag she had been keeping by the door; he had explained how she would need a second set of clothes for the morning.

"I thought booze would help it," Jade explained, following him and stumbling on the stairs at which point Mason caught and steadied her.

"Been there, tried that," Mason assured her, leading the way out to his jeep. "The alcohol actually made it worse because I got sick to my stomach."

"Ugh, bummer," Jade complained as he helped her up into the jeep.

"Ah, yeah," Mason suppressed a laugh as he closed the door for her, turning to see Matt and Vicki coming home from the funeral.

"Is she wasted?" Vicki asked as she had seen Jade stumbling to get into the jeep; Mason motioned for her to keep quiet.

"She's freaking out about tonight," Mason reasoned. "And she doesn't want you guys to worry, she asked me not to tell you."

"Why is everyone keeping us in the dark about this stuff?" Vicki snapped, recalling earlier when Damon bailed on the funeral to talk to Klaus and wasn't returning her calls now.

"What?" Mason asked in confusion.

"We're just worried about Jade, that's all," Matt jumped in to explain.

"I'm gonna get her sobered up," Mason assured them. "Talk to her about tonight, show her where we're gonna turn. I'll bring her back first thing tomorrow morning, all right?"

"Fine," Vicki mumbled, frustrated that there wasn't a way for her to help Jade. She might be even less thrilled than Damon that Mason was the one helping Jade tonight since everyone knew that he had a thing for her.

"She'll be all right," Matt promised Vicki as they went into the house together. "You got through transitioning, she'll get through this."

"She's going to keep transitioning Matty," Vicki said now. "Every month." She paused as he seemed to be searching the house. "What are you doing?"

"Seeing if she has another stash anywhere," Matt explained in frustration. Even if he thought she could get through this, he knew what she might turn to again for help.

"I don't like this," Vicki shook her head.

"Well, me either," Matt agreed, his search in the living room coming up empty. "But, she has a problem Vic, it doesn't just get shut off."

"Not that," Vicki told him. "Well...ok, that but I hate not knowing what's going on." She motioned to the door. "Damon's out there doing who knows what kind of shady business with shady original dad himself."

"Damon's not going to do anything that would hurt Jade or make things worse," Matt reasoned. "He loves her."

"I don't trust her dad," Vicki said, skepticism in her voice.

"I'd trust him over ours," Matt said simply before heading to the next room to continue his search for alcohol.

Jade woke up the next morning, her body still aching. It was like the worst hangover she ever had multiplied. There wasn't a whole lot that she remembered, she wondered if the pain made her black out or if you weren't supposed to remember what happened when you were a wolf. The more awake she was, the more she remember.

She remembered locking herself in the old Lockwood cellar with Mason last night, freaked out as they locked themselves behind bars. She remembered feeling every bone breaking, screaming in agony as tears rolled down her face; she remembered Mason briefly taking her hand to comfort her even through his own pain, before the bones there started breaking too. As she became more aware of her surroundings she realized two things. One was that she was warm, too warm for being locked in a cold cellar on a fall night and she realized she was being held by someone. The second was that, since she turned, she wasn't wearing anything.

"Oh my God," Jade scrambled away from Mason who had been spooning her and he jolted awake, not realizing himself what had happened.

"Ah," Mason said, slightly embarrassed as he covered his eyes. "Sorry..." He felt his clothes hitting him as Jade tossed them to him.

"Just...don't look," Jade said, getting dressed quickly. "Um...ok," she said when she had yanked her sweater over her head, covering her own eyes now. "Ah...your turn."

"I'm sorry Jade," Mason said as he got up, getting dressed now himself.

"Um, it's ok," Jade reassured him. "Neither of us knew...wolf thing or whatever. Um..." She was uncomfortable now. "Can we just go home? I wanna see my brother and sister."

"Yeah," Mason promised. "Let's go."

"Mason," Jade stopped him from leaving the cellar. "Thanks."

"Of course," Mason nodded, watching her smile softly before turning to go. "Whatever you need."
